👮Pass the The End Solitary Confinement Act!

Last week, U.S. Senators Ed Markey, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Peter Welch introduced the End Solitary Confinement Act, companion legislation to HR 4972 introduced in the House of Representatives by Missouri Rep. Cori Bush in July. This bill would end solitary confinement in all federal custody and incentivize states and localities to do the same. The End Solitary Confinement Act is a product of years of advocacy and activism from campaigns across the country led by people who have survived solitary and had loved ones inside, and draws from the best policy components of enacted and pending legislation. Specifically, the End Solitary Confinement Act does four key things: End all forms of solitary confinement, ensure that all alternatives to solitary are *actual* alternatives, enhance due process protections, and create oversight and enforcement mechanisms. Over 175 organizations nationwide have already endorsed the End Solitary Confinement Act and I hope you will as well. Solitary confinement is torture. We must end this barbaric practice. Thanks.

I am writing to urge immediate action towards transforming our corrections system from one focused on punishment and control, to a model centered on human dignity and rehabilitation. The current punitive approach perpetuates cycles of incarceration, abuse, and societal disintegration, ultimately failing to rehabilitate individuals and reintegrate them into our communities.

Recent analyses of European prison systems, such as Norway's Halden Prison, demonstrate the effectiveness of a human dignity approach. At Halden, private rooms, communal living spaces, vocational training, and family contact are prioritized, resulting in lower rates of violence and recidivism. This approach not only fosters humane treatment but also proves to be cost-effective in the long term.

We must shift away from a system that dehumanizes individuals and perpetuates a cycle of incarceration and abuse. Instead, we must embrace a model that prioritizes rehabilitation, second chances, and societal reintegration. Comprehensive prison reform that centers on human dignity is not only morally imperative but also a crucial step towards creating a more just and equitable society.

It is time to end modern slave labor within the for-profit prison industrial complex and invest in rehabilitation-focused treatment. We have a responsibility to nurture emotionally intelligent individuals and provide real opportunities for those who have been failed by the system.

I urge you to support and advocate for legislation that embodies the principles of human dignity and rehabilitation. Let us work together to ensure that every individual receives a genuine second chance and the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

Justice for the American people! Together we can say NO to Modern Slave Labor in the USA! Let's make their second chance count! Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.

How's your Omegaverse fic going?

hello anon. i see you are also a person of good taste. thank you for being interested in the omegaverse fic's development.

so my omegaverse fic is connected to @nyacoart 's current wip omegaverse fic bc i got so inspired i wrote fic for it, so you should 100000% check out that when its done :3 that being said im also to blame for that bc i still need to finish betareading it :<<< alphareading it, if you will. as the poets say.

anyways, let me tell you about my secret master plan. :) so i definitely Totally wasnt busy with schoolwork and other various things i need to write and i Definitely Absolutely dragged it out into november purely so the omegaverse fic release date could be in November of all months (use your internet knowledge to know why this time is significant). that being said, im an excellent alphareader. what can i say. *walks back into my dms to find myself being held at gunpoint*

so aside from that, my fic is a prequel to nyaco's :) it's actually fully finished at uhhhh a whopping 15k words :> it just needs a few edits + i need to finish beta alphareading !! stay tuned in november!!!! we stay silly!!

Not to get lost in the narratives and such, but I think it's a wild thing to take a young player with fire in his belly who will be the first to admit that he was never even the best player in his junior teams made it to the NHL it's because he clawed his way thru via any means necessary, and to tell him, I want you to look at this example of all things beautiful about hockey, and do everything exactly as he does it.

And how all of that, instead of breeding resentment can turn into devotion. I'm thinking of faith and how Bergy will be the first to talk about all the ways in which Marchy made his game better, of two people who pushed and balanced and completed each other, who worked so well because they were so different in so many ways, two people who would suck at being each other. And what happens when, you say now you take over. Now you lead, on your own.

And I guess I'm also thinking of that 22 year old with a chip on his shoulder who was told: you will never be the best player on ice as long as he is on the ice, so I want you to be second best.

HI HELLO!!!!!! I’d happy to share, I love talking about these things!!!!! It might get a bit rant-y but I promise I’m just trying to cover all bases :]

Some context: my dad grew up with cats, specifically the 1983 broadway album, which means that while he’s never seen the 1998 movie, he has seen the show live 2-3 times, (my family is pretty musical-my grandma saw the og show with Betty Buckley, and I’ve never been more jealous of anybody in my entire life).

So: we were talking about stuff and nonsense and I explained the newsies vs cats poll. Obviously he knew a bit about both shows, as I’d recently been in newsies and made him watch the Broadway version.

He of course immediately started talking about how many criticisms you could do of each show. It quickly devolved into him bitching about Skimbleshanks and Santa Fe, because he hates both of them in equal measure, (although Santa Fe may take the cake. He despises the entire plot line).

I brought up the criticism that many musical fans seem to have about cats: “it’s not about anything” or “it doesn’t have a theme/plot.”

“That’s just blatantly not true, munkustrap, (I called him gray cat guy in the conversion), explains the plot in the third song. You know, jellicles go to the jellicle layer, blah blah blah.”

“Well, sure,” said he, “but what’s the show really about then?”

“Uhhhhh,” I said, it being like 11 o clock at night, “it’s mostly about second chances and forgiveness, right?”

To which he said, no. Cats is about pride. More specifically, ego death.

All of the cats are prideful. The Rum Tum Tugger, obviously, but also the Gumbie cat, the old theater cat was the best there’s ever been, as featherfore-whatever his name was. You know, even the stupid train cat. They’re all walking around talking about how great they are, or were, except Grizabella.

She just says “hey, I’m here, I’m done, I’m down and out, and I’ve got nothing and no one. I’m just here. Times were great, but without the memory, I have nothing”

And that’s why they’re like YES. You get to go the heavyside layer. You get it. You deserve your second life.

FIC: "Still You" (MLB; Lukanette; LBSC Lukanette Month 2024)

@lovebugs-and-snakecharmers is doing a Lukanette Month for September 2024, and we all just kinda tossed some prompts in the disco to compile a list?  We ended up with 71 prompts, so I decided I’d roll some dice to pick a prompt, do a twenty minute (ish, bc we all know sometimes they run away from me) sprint, and try to get some short fics out this month?

Prompt 61: “Look, I know I don’t deserve a second chance.  But I’m hoping you’ll let me have one anyway.”

The Liberty had never felt so…imposing before.

Everything felt imposing just then, though.

The city felt like it was growing up around her, higher and higher until every bright and beautiful and good thing was blotted out by cold and hard and dark.

She didn’t usually have this much trouble shaking akuma effects.

It…had been a long time since one had gotten to her like this.

But being trapped in that dream…in that nightmare…it had been too much.

She could take a lot of things.  She just…she couldn’t take that.

And as she broke through the buildings and onto the walk along the Seine, as the familiar barge came into view with its bright and chaotic clash of colors – with that stupid face she used to think had been painted on to scare police away until Luka had told her otherwise grinning back at her – she felt her throat tighten again.  Her feet slowed to a stop just shy of the gangway, and she found herself staring up at the boat like…like…

He would be there.

He had to be there.

He almost always was – he definitely was, when she needed him.

…and she needed him now.

So…why did she feel like he’d be gone?

It’s just the akuma, she reminded herself.  It’s just a bad dream.

Luka wouldn’t say those things.

Luka would never…Luka loves you.

…loved.  He had loved her.  Back before he’d come back, before he’d left the first time.  Before she’d broken his heart and made him go.

How could she possibly hope he would still be there, waiting for her now?

She started running again, blindly – barely aware of the startled shout of the Captain as she burst past her.  Barely aware of anything beyond getting below, through the galley, past the door and to…

“Marinette?”

He was there.

She crashed into him, her arms wrapping tight around him and her head burrowing against his chest as she knocked them back.  He fell onto his bed, his arms immediately coming up to hold her close as she openly wept into his shirt.  If she had bothered looking up – if she had been able to see through her tears – she would have seen the baffled expression on his face, but all she was really aware of was the warmth of him beneath her, the security she felt with his arms around her, the peace that fought to sink its way in through her panic.

“Shhh, shhh, melody, it’s all right,” he murmured, a hand rubbing up and down her back.  He didn’t ask what had happened – of course he didn’t.  He had probably seen the akuma alert.  Even if he hadn’t been there for the battle, he had to have known.  “It’s over.  It wasn’t real.”

“It could be,” she gasped, her fist tightening in his shirt.  “It should be.”

He didn’t press for more.

He never did.

He was too good like that.

“…I can’t do this anymore, Luka,” she croaked, shaking her head.

“Do what, Marinette?” he asked, his voice too soft and kind for how horrible she felt.

“I can’t love you anymore,” she choked out.  She was dimly aware of him…tensing.  Freezing?  Beneath her.  His hand on her back was suddenly too still, and it felt like even his breathing had slowed.  She groaned and pushed her face against his chest.  “Not when you don’t know.  And even if you do know.  It’s unfair to you.  You deserve so much better, and I know I ruined us.  I know I ruined it all, and I don’t deserve a second chance, but I want one, Luka.  I want you.  I want –”

…she was hit by a sudden feeling of vertigo, like the akuma had grabbed her again and was hurtling her into another reality – only it couldn’t have been the akuma, because nothing good ever came from akumas, and this…this…

Luka had both pushed her away and pulled her up, rolling them until he was pressing her back into his bed as he kissed her senseless – or tried to.  And she just laid there, staring at him with wide eyes, as he held her face in his hands and gently coaxed her mouth to move with his and…her eyes were just starting to close as he started to pull away, but she wasn’t ready for him to pull away yet.  She reached up to pull him back, her hands twisting in his hair as she dragged his mouth back to hers, and oh, that was better…

She had kissed people before.

Most of them had been…not exactly her choice.  Usually because of an akuma.  Because she had to – never because she wanted to.

…she had never kissed Luka before.

And if this was what kissing Luka was like…

“No,” she gasped when he tried to pull away again.  His chuckle was warm and filled up her insides, like honey in her favorite tea.  His nose brushed against her cheek, and she whined as she tried to pull his mouth back to hers.  She wasn’t ready yet – she wasn’t done with him yet.

“No?” he asked, his voice somehow lower than that damn chuckle.  She squirmed beneath him, sighing when his lips pressed against her cheek.

“I mean yes,” she huffed, tugging his hair.  She opened her eyes to look up at him, a pout definitely on her face, and oh the way he was looking at her…she felt…gooey.  “I…please don’t stop?”

“…never,” he whispered, kissing her again.  He was practically beaming at her when he pulled back.  “I have no idea what the hell that akuma did, but thank God.”

“…what?” she asked, blinking up at him.  He shook his head, his smile slipping.

“No, not…I mean.  Not that it scared you like that – that’s not ok,” he said, leaning his forehead on hers.  “But…it got you here.  It made you say that.  It…yes, Marinette.  Hell yes.”

“…yes?” she asked, uncertain.  Just uncertain enough that he apparently decided he needed to kiss her again to chase it away.

“Hell.  Yes,” he said, emphasizing each word with a kiss.  “Marinette…you crazy, wonderful, absolutely insane girl…”

He dropped to the bed beside her with a sigh, curling his arm around her to gather her to his chest.  He kissed her again, and then once more.  She hoped that meant he was enjoying kissing her as much as she was enjoying kissing him.

“You can have all my second chances,” he said, leaning his forehead against hers as his hand traced absent lines along her back.  “And then some.”

“…forever?” she asked, peeking up at him.  His smile was so…so…stupid.

She loved it.

She loved him.

“Forever,” he promised, pulling her back to him.

The Liberty suddenly didn’t feel so imposing anymore, once again a symbol of everything that was bright and beautiful and good in her world.

have you read (and/or enjoyed) Haunting Adeline? I’ve seen some stuff about it that kinda piques my interest but i have seen a ton of people say it sucks and i’m hesitant to buy it in case i hate it but i trust your judgement lol

when i went searching for dark romance books, it frequently popped up and was one of the first i ended up reading. Haunting Adeline, That Sik Love, the Predator, the Ritual, Den of Vipers, Carnage, Haunt me Darling, Take me With You. pretty much anything that came up on a quick search, i devoured in a span of two weeks. but out of all of them, i was really disappointed by Haunting Adeline :/

it was so hyped up on tiktok, Reddit, goodreads, and rec pages that i was really excited for it, only to feel pretty swindled after. i won't get into spoilers since you haven't read it, but i was not a fan of a lot of the plot choices and character decisions. idk. i guess i just like it when things make sense.

for most of the book, i was bored or mad. usually, if i'm sucked into a plot, i can finish within a few hours of non-stop reading. but this one took me a whole two days to get through. i just wasn't interested in continuing. i'd read a little bit, get overcome with a visceral feeling of "oh for FUCK'S SAKE!" and then do something else because i'd couldn't be bothered to continue. it was not living up to the expectations i had for it (or the ones set by reviews i'd read), but even outside of that, it just didn't click with me at all. i just didn't find the leads compelling enough to stick around. it was trying to be too much at all once, and for me, it failed at a lot of it.

BUT! the smut was good. very hot. fmc made some very typical fmc choices (re: stupid ones that no person living in the real world would have, but easily very forgiveable). for most of it, i was kinda wishing Addie lobbed the mmc upside the head with a shovel. he was so useless, it made me wanna cry. and i love unrepentant mmcs, but i just didn't click with his character at all because he was a walking contraction and his values made little sense to me at all.

in all reality, i should have dnf at 45% but i suffered through and now i wake up in a cold sweat thinking about these lines:

Insane to think abt how lucanis and elio essentially went through the same thing but one came out of his prison believing more in himself and his self worth, realizing the bad things he had been believing abt himself were not true and that he deserves good things while the other came out of his with all of his insecurities validated, believing he was wrong for ever feeling hope abt the people around him and wanting good things for himself, realizing just how alone and worthless he is, becoming a much more closed off and, honestly, worse version of himself
