It’s insufferable.

Air too thick in her lungs, her throat and nose close around every inhale. Rebel with every exhale. Perhaps this is how she’ll die.

The woman on the television has a pretty, plastic smile on her face, make up perfect. Face without the sheen of sweat as she announces the weather report in her perfect, near robotic voice. Mel has never hated a woman more.

Hot winds blowing up towards the isthmus from the deserts of Shurima threaten to make this summer the hottest we’ve seen. With record breaking temperatures of 311K and above, the costal cities of Krexor, Holdrum, Piltover, Rokund, Trannit, and Zaun are facing several heatwaves in the summer season. This is Lady Sempescu with PNN, live from—”

The tele blinks off, Mel’s hand tight on the remote. Held like a spear, handled like a weapon within her grip.

There’s no one she can go to. Mel has few friends enough as it is, and the few she has are busy. Elora’s gone to some convention in Noxus. She hasn’t heard from Samira for upwards of two months, which means she’s on assignment. Shoola’s gone to Camavor on vacation, and she’d jump into the Pilt before ever asking Salo for a favor. And then, there is the manor.

She entertains the idea, stripped down to the barest of clothing. Reclined on the cool tile of the apartment, she relishes the feel of it against her heated skin. Stares at the ceiling and thinks of her childhood room in her too quiet apartment. Thinks of a place that has not been home for a long while now.

They have working AC there, no doubt. Ambessa would not tolerate anything otherwise. But if Mel was to leave Midtown Heights and return home, her mother would give her the look. The look which communicated that Ambessa was right, and that Mel should have never moved out in the first place.

Mel had left home to escape her mother’s controlling hand in her life. Tolerating Ambessa was much like this heatwave. Oppressive. Suffocating and smothering. Mel had worked hard to escape; to return for any would be humiliating. Not when she worked so hard to escape her mother’s world.

Mel would never live it down.

She calls the Midtown Heights office again, bare foot tapping impatiently as the line rings. Her skin is cooler after standing in front of her open freezer for some relief. But her core temperature is rising now, and her temper with it. Finally, she gets someone.

“Good morning, Midtown Heights Luxury Apartments, how may I help you?” the operator says. The cheeriness in her voice makes Mel want to reach through the phone and strangle her.

“Hello, this is Ms. Medarda, from the penthouse suite 1004. I’m calling to inform you of a issue with the air conditioning… yes, I left a message two days ago and have not heard back. Is the maintenance man available to come up today? Yes, please do. Thank you. You too.”

She’s near peeling her skin off her body by the time she hears the doorbell. The sky is too blue outside the large floor to ceiling windows, not a cloud on the horizon. The sun blinds, unrepentant. Beside her, the box of ice cream she’d picked up from the mart is half finished, containing a pool of melted Noxian citrus ice cream.

Mel opens the door and immediately, heat swirls and builds beneath her skin. The handyman is a vision. Smoking hot, as Samira would say. He smiles at her, and she feels his eyes rove over her as well. They leave a trail of new heat in their wake.

And Mel’s not one to feel embarrassed or self-conscious, but she cannot help her acute awareness of the too short night slip she wears, and the near sheerness of the material. Of how sweaty she is. Of how far from appropriate this situation is. Of how deeply the heat has addled her brain, because she realizes she hasn’t said anything as yet.

“Jayce Talis, Miss Medarda. Admin sent me to fix the HVAC?” Golden eyes flit back to her. Mel swallows thickly and nods, something bitter in her throat. Steps back. Opens the door wider to let him enter. Keeps her eyes on the deep blue of his henley as he walks past. She nearly swoons when he removes his work boots before stepping further into the house. Thoughtful.

He turns to face her, and Mel realizes she is simply standing. Watching. “Please, call me Mel.” Miss Medarda reminds too much of Ambessa. “And yes, the unit has been out for about two days. She gestures towards the hall, and he falls her through on near silent feet.

“It really is hot. Did you not want to go to a hotel until everything was fixed?” His curiosity betrays his real question. Why are you courting heatstroke by roasting in this glorified oven, no doubt.

“I have fish to feed,�� is all she says as they pass her assortment of fans lining the hallway. “It’s just in here.” Her penthouse comes with a rooftop garden, within which the body of her problem lies. Jayce nods, and wordlessly gets to work.

She checks on him about 30 minutes later. Better clothes and bearing a glass filled with water and ice cubes. His broad back is the first thing the greet her, blue henley discarded. Then the toned muscles of his arms. Her eyes drink him in, greedy. A desire to paint overwhelms her. She says nothing, leaving the glass near enough that he might see it, and retreats into the house.

Perhaps she might see if there is anything else in the penthouse that needs…fixing.

I may have a red dwarf theory/head canon about Rimmer, and why he never seems to adapt, learn or change (especially in earlier seasons)

(I have not yet watched the last 2 seasons, if there is something in canon that directly refutes anything I say here please let me know!!)

Rimmer is a hologram, a ‘copy’ of the person he used to be whilst living. He has the memories, personality, everything the original had, but it is still a fact that the original is dead and the hologram is a copy. These holograms were created to boost crew morale on the ship, but cannot go away from the ship (in soft light form, which is what he was originally programmed to be) without being in that huge cage, seen in ‘thanks for the memory’.

To me, this says that holograms are meant to be temporary ways of staving off a crew’s grief until the ship is docked, so that everyone keeps working, and once they go home the fact that they really can’t see this person again begins to hit. They are supposed to be copies that temporarily fill the void that death leaves until it would no longer inconvenience Jupiter mining co.

A hologram would need to be backed up somehow, to have its data saved from new memories it makes post mortem, because if something goes wrong and the hologram thinks it only just died it does nothing to stave off a crew’s grief, since it is even more obvious that the person is really dead.

But large changes in a hologram’s behaviours would also potentially ruin the effect. Even if the change is organic, ie. the hologram learns not to do something they always do or picks up a new habit, the mourning party would see the change as inorganic, believe that the hologram is not truly the person who died, and the holograms purpose would be lost.

So, the most reasonable thing to do would be to update the memories, but prevent any major changes to a hologram’s personality that may be obtained post-mortem. Artificially staying the same is far less noticeable than any sort of change, and holograms are meant to be a temporary solution. It’s not like a hologram will be sustained by the ship for decades, there’s no reason to allow for growth!

Enter the extraordinary circumstance of Rimmer’s situation.

In many episodes, he seems to start to learn to be less of an asshole, only for the next episode to forget all of this potential growth and continue acting the same way. Red dwarf is not truly episodic, the characters remember and reference things that happened in the past constantly, and adapt to them for better or worse. One instance of a character’s personality changing (also the only one I can think of rn) is Kryten, who goes from a simple service droid to becoming an individual, developing a clingy and sneaky demeanour appearing in season 7 which you wouldn’t imagine from season 2 Kryten.

Kryten is not reliant on the ship or Holly, and he does almost all of his own maintenance, but Rimmer (especially soft light Rimmer) is reliant on the ship for everything. This means he will be backed up multiple times, and each time, his personality will revert to ‘normal’.

This is why I think that trying to get Rimmer to stop being such an asshole is like drawing blood from a stone in many of the earlier seasons (though we do eventually see some growth after he becomes hard light and Ace).

Even if he has learnt to be better (or fundamentally different to how he was when he was alive), he will unlearn it. It doesn’t matter how much he wants to change.

He can’t.

New Lot Type

How many units can be contained within a residential rental?

6 Units can be made in a Residential Rental

Are there cheats to change this cap?

Yes! bb.increaserentalunitcap on/off

There is a max of 99 Units per Save.

How many Sims can live in each unit?

A full Sim household of 8 Sims can live in a Unit.

Are there loading screens when I want to visit another unit on the residential rental lot?

Yes, there will be loading screens between units, but sims from other units will use objects in the shared spaces.

How can I easily swap between household units to play? Do I have to go to manage worlds?

You can access units through manage worlds as always, but we have also added a new “Switch to Household” interaction on doors of the active residential lot so you can switch to other units more easily.

Can I build high-rises like in City Living?

You will still be limited to the existing build mode rules including number of floors and wall heights.

Where can’t I build Residential Rentals?

Can I change apartments from City Living or Eco Lifestyle to the new Residential Rentals?

Residential Rentals are brand new Lot Type with all new gameplay offered in For Rent. Existing apartments in City Living or Eco Lifestyle remain unique and separate from these new Residential Rental lot type, although Residential Rentals can be placed in lots from these worlds to add even more dimension and variety.

Can I build a Residential Rental on a Penthouse lot from City Living?

Penthouses are special lots that will not work with this venue type. Penthouses and their functionality will remain unchanged with the addition of For Rent.

Do new Residential Rental events happen on apartment lots?

We have added Maintenance Troubles as a new Lot Challenge that can be placed on any other Residential lots. The new Maintenance Events, though, can only happen on Residential Rentals by default.

Property Management

Can I own any other businesses with this pack?

You will still be able to own businesses from other packs as well as be a Property Owner for Residential Rental Lots! We do not have any new businesses added with this pack.

Do the water heater, ac units include gameplay? Do they work on lots other than Residential Rentals?

Yes there is gameplay associated with the Water Heater, Electrical Panel, AC unit, and the Radiators. Some of these will have additional gameplay when used in conjunction with Seasons.

These will work for all Residential lots, but when used in Residential Rental lots they will work for the individual units if placed inside them or for all units if placed in shared spaces.

Can a unit on a Residential Rental be a business venue/lot type?

Residential Rentals, a business in and of themselves, cannot be combined with other businesses.

Does mold cause Sims to become zombies?

Mold gameplay and associated deaths are very opt-in and easily avoidable. No Zombie outbreaks are attached to this new death type and ghost.

Closer than Ever

Will sims Snoop by themselves (autonomously)?

If Sims have the Nosy trait they will observe other Sims, but will not find out any secrets.

Are Snooping Sims Burglars? Will Burglar music play?

The iconic Sim burglar experience intrudes our thoughts for another day. Snooping and secrets are subtly different, although can be combined with Kleptomanic Trait for some fun and interesting active gameplay.

Marbles is Child specific, but collecting Marbles is available even after you’ve become an adult.

Hopscotch was designed for Child Sims, but can be used by Teens and Up as well.

Tankiste Cold Weather Gear

This is an impression of a French tank crewman in winter gear. One may see this uniform on tankiste during the cold winter months. While the standard infantry soldier may wear the iconic sheepskin jerkin, the tankiste instead had to rely on their black leather coat during the winter season. This tankiste wears the Toile de Tente Modèle 1897 modifié 1914 as extra waterproofing. This variant of the tent had loops that would allow for two lengths of hemp cordage to be passed through the waist and neck area to allow the tent to be worn as a poncho. Waterproofing the tent was done using paraffin and alcohol thinner.

Knitted items would be issued throughout the entire war, created by French citizens at the homefront and quality checked by the French Red Cross. They would be passed onto the army Quarter-Master where they would be received in as standard issue winter gear. The knitted cap beside this is intended to be worn under the helmet at the frontline. Below these is a knitted helmet or balaclava. These would be worn below the nose or at the chin, and had tails or capes at the front and back that would fit under the uniform to secure the balaclava in place and provide extra insulation. Below this is a pair of knitted wristlets, to be worn under the tunic providing some hand and arm insulation.

To the right is the standard French Army folding lantern. Specifically, it is the Lanterne de Campement Monjardet Modèle 1910 with its Ersatz Lamp Cover. Many models exist of this pattern and design slightly varies between manufacturers. All examples would be accepted into the army as a regulation item. These would be issued to Corporals to provide necessary lighting at night. Tankiste would also be provided with an electric lamp for their tanks, and the tankiste could also purchase an electric flashlight to give light inside the tank when performing maintenance duties. The candlelit Monjardet lamp folds into a triangular lamp with a hanging handle at the top and a holding handle on the back. The candle is pinned to the bottom panel by a spike and the rear panel is reflective which directs more light outward towards the front. Transparent mica is used as the clear shielding and can be slid out and replaced when it eventually gets damaged from the heat. Holes in the side panels allow for air to pass through and a small vent is placed at the top panel to disperse smoke. Overall, these lanterns were well liked with the troops as its design provided decent light coverage at night while being very compact when stowed.

Below this is a smoking pipe, lighter, and tobacco case. Nothing much to be said here - many smoked as a pastime during this period. The lighter is a commercial 'trench art' lighter, not created by the soldiers themselves but made to look like the examples that were created in the trenches. This style of 'trench art' item was popular among the civilian population and soldiers alike. It resembles an artillery shell with the cap closed, and removing the cap shows the petrol lighter ignition piece. The brass ignition piece can be removed which reveals cotton balls that absorb the liquid fuel. Beside this is a French 32 card manille deck. Manille was a very popular card game among the French at the time period. A tax stamp is placed on the Ace of Clubs which was a common sight on French playing cards. To the right of this is a board game called Solitaire. It consists of a wooden board with 36 removable pegs where the objective of the game is to clear the board of all but one of the pieces by jumping, horizontally or vertically, over an adjacent piece and removing it from the board. These types of time wasting and socializing games were available to soldiers in military bazaars. A light blue wool pocket was provided for this Solitaire example.

1: Does anyone in your OTP/OT3 have seasonal allergies that kick up in the spring? How does the other member(s) help?

- I can’t imagine either of them having seasonal allergies, but if one did inhale too much pollen, I imagine the other would care for them as one would with a cold.

2: Where does your OTP like to go walking when the weather is warm?

-   A hiking park. The sceneries are beautiful, you’re not crowded by a lot of people, and there’s usually a good amount of breeze so it’s not sweltering.

3: How would your OTP handle it if one of them became a bee?

- Wei Wuxian would build a bee home for him with all these cool gadgets to impress Meng-Bee. Meng Yao would take the simpler route and buy a bee home for him with all the necessary items to keep him alive. They would both try to figure out how to bring the other back to normal, and if it requires going out, they will call for Yanli to help ba-bee-sit their lover.

4: Does your OTP plant flowers/tend to gardens?

- They will definitely have a lotus pond in their backyard, and a vegetable/fruit garden that Wei Wuxian tends to the most since Meng Yao has a 9-5 job, but he helps around during his day offs and listens to Wei Wuxian talk about his masterpieces passionately. They’re not big on a pretty flower garden, and their indoor plants are basic useful low maintenance ones like a snake plant. 

5: Does your OTP like the beauty and new life of spring, or the cold winter?

- Wei Wuxian prefers the Summer and Meng Yao prefers Autumn, but if you had them decide which one, they would pick the spring since they’re tropical people. They would rather deal with rain than snow. 

6: Does your OTP celebrate any holidays during the spring? How?

- They’re Chinese, and they do have a Spring Festival, though it’s more of a New Years festival that takes place late Winter. During Spring, they will definitely celebrate the Qingming Festival to pray for their parents if they’re dead in the AU. For Labor Day, depending on what jobs they have, they will stay in and become couch potatoes binging on television shows, since they’re such busy people. For the Dragon boat Festival, Wei Wuxian would definitely be participating in it, and Meng Yao would support him from the sidelines. 

-Meng Yao is also a Buddhist (of sorts), so he will be also celebrating their holidays in his own way and Wei Wuxian will be supportive.

7: What sorts of spring sports does either member of your OTP participate in?

- They’re both athletic, and swimming is the number one sport they both participate as river people. Along with water polo, rowing, fencing and volleyball.

- Separately, Meng Yao would invest in badminton and Wei Wuxian would get into lacrosse. 

8: Does the other member cheer their lover on?

- Absolutely! Meng Yao would bring out his Yunmeng dialect into that audience during his boyfriend’s lacrosse games, terrifying the shit out of those near him! Wei Wuxian would cheer him on while remaining on his best behavior, but if he hears someone speak bad about his boyfriend, he might get into a fight and get kicked out. Not without slaughtering the asshole’s ego though. 

9: If your OTP watches anime, what shows would they be looking forward to this spring season?

- They’re both Attack on Titans fans. Meng Yao’s favorite character is Erwin and cried when he died. Wei Wuxian’s favorite is Sasha and became distraught when she died. 

- A new anime that they would get into is Mashle because it kind of resonates with them, but they also love anime comedies.

10: How would your OTP react if it started to snow during spring?

- They’d investigate the cause first. Afterwards, they would go out to examine and play with the snow to experience the rare event. They’d probably travel to one of their sibling’s or friend’s place to share the moment.

11: Which member of your OTP accidentally wears an outfit too warm for the weather? Which member of your OTP accidentally wears an outfit not warm enough for the weather?

- Meng Yao for the former and Wei Wuxian for the latter.

12: What kind of flowers does your OTP give to each other?

- Meng Yao’s favorite flowers are chrysanthemums, and Wei Wuxian is careful to choose the right color. As for Wei Wuxian, lotus flowers aren’t good for a bouquet, so instead Meng Yao gifts him gladioli flowers which stand as a symbolism of one’s moral and loyal character and remembrance.

13: Which member of your OTP freaks out when they hear an ice cream truck pass by?

- Wei Wuxian a 100%! He would even go the extra step to rush to Meng Yao and convince him like a child to follow him to the ice cream truck.

14: Does your OTP care about how green their lawn is? Do they even have a lawn?

- Meng Yao cares about how green his lawn is since he cares about outside appearance, so he hires someone to take care of the front lawn.

15: If your OTP starts school in spring, where do they go to get supplies? Do they end up sharing any classes?

- Meng Yao would definitely shop around to any store for the best prices for the best quality, and would contact the professors beforehand so he has a list. Wei Wuxian would just get his from your typical store, or gives a list to Meng Yao since Meng Yao would go out of his way anyway to make sure he was ready for school as much as he was. And Wei Wuxian would thank him with other preparations for the semester. 

- And no to the classes because Wuxian would be working to get his degree in science to become a pharmaceutical scientist, and Meng Yao would be studying to get a degree in business administration.

16: Who would surprise the other with flowers?

- Meng Yao definitely has that flower theme going because of his family, but I don’t see them as the type of couple to give each other flowers as surprise gifts. Their surprise romantic gifts would be a cup of coffee. 

17: Who’s more likely to make a flower crown for the other?

- Wei Wuxian.

18: Does your OTP prefer to go outside during the spring, or do they prefer staying inside and cuddling up on a couch?

-Definitely going outside. They cuddled enough during the Winter/Raining Season, they need to go out and jog.

19: What sorts of wildlife would your OTP like to see? What kind of wildlife would they not like to see?

- They’d like to see insect wildlife since they’re the most diverse and interesting type of wildlife. They wouldn’t want to see mountain wildlife, especially on a hiking trip.

21: Which one would surprise the other by taking them to the beach before the summer crowd comes?

- Meng Yao would surprise Wei Wuxian with this, especially after a long stressful project. It would be right before sunrise. It’s cold, so they’re covered in winter jackets and pants, playing with sparklers, or those fun light up toys. They’d then have their breakfast inside the open trunk of their car while watching the sun rise, listening to alternative indie music in the background. After the sun is fully up, they do different things like building sandcastles, draw elaborate sketches in the sand, take a swim once its warm enough and more.

22: Which one’s hat would blow away in the wind and which one would go after the hat and bring it back?

- Wei Wuxian a 100%. He’d be doing parkour to get that hat!
