A very fun trip to Fort George this summer to see the 1812 reenactment. As I get older the camp life stuff and work in the kitchen becomes a lot more interesting than just the drill and soldiering (still fun). Met lots of great people and learned a lot of cool stuff.

Oops I forgot to post-
Here are some photos from the Huntington Beach Revolution Reenactment! We had a wonderful time except the weather was stinky. It rained a lot and was cold and windy. We did not get to do as many activities as we wanted to do, but we were able to do all four battles! Everyone I got to talk to is absolutely lovely. It was also a blast teaching people history who came by. I got to help with the Culper Ring scavenger hunt and I'm so glad I did! It was a fun activity for younger visitors :). It was an honor to serve with His Majesty's Marines. God save the King! 🇬🇧
Here are some photos :)

Drawings from the Red River Meeting House Grounds - The Location of the Second Great Awakening in 1800
I had been coming here with my family to their annual Camp Meeting and reenacting events ever since I was three years old. This place is very special to me.
The Forgiveness Tree: Oil-based colored pencil, 5x7"
A year ago, I had brought my sketchbook and some cheap colored pencils to the Camp Meeting. I was uninspired on what to draw, so I asked God to point something out to me. I felt drawn to this particular tree.
Dreama, one of the organizers of this event, asked me to put my drawing in the auction, and I gladly obliged. What I didn't know, is this tree had a story behind it! When the drawing was brought up to bid, someone shouted "Tell us the story!"
"EVERGREEN TREE IN THE CENTER OF THE PROPERTY was planted by devoted prayer warriors having a service some years ago. The group prayed and as the Holy Spirit led, asked forgiveness of wrongs their ancestors had committed against the Native Americans. In turn, a Native American chief was in the group and he also prayed asking forgiveness for what his people had done to the whites. It was a very emotional and precious time with the Lord and each other. The tree symbolizes the forgiveness and love now shared among the people in the United States."
When everyone learned this story, the bids took off! While other items were going for $5-10, my drawing of the "Forgiveness Tree" sold for $45! This is what started it all. This year, I drew it again!
The Stump: Ink Pen, 5x7"
This used to be the home of a very large tree. This tree had a hole in the front of it which I remember throwing walnuts into as a child. It's a shame it was cut down as I remember it fondly, but it appears a new tree is coming up to take its place.
The Meeting House: Oil-based colored pencil, 8.5x5.5"
Finally, a portrait of the titular Meeting House itself.
I will be at the October camp meeting this weekend (Oct 11-13, 2024) and I will be selling prints of these drawings, and the framed originals will be put up in the annual Auction! All proceeds from the Auction go to the upkeep of this historical site!
Even if you can't be there, prints and other products are also available in my TeePublic Store!

Being a trans person in historical reenacting has been such an oddly gender euphoric experience.
So I'm genderfluid, and when I'm in a ftm vibe (which is most frequent honestly), in daily life I'm still perceived as "woman." But when I'm dressed as a male soldier in the 1770s British military, this happens very infrequently. In fact, I'm correctly gendered by folks (e.g. old cis white men) who normally wouldn't be so kind to trans men like me. My heart swells and I can't stop smiling every time a boomer calls me "he" or even corrects himself without my prompting. My shoulders are broad enough and 18th century fashion tailored enough that I truly match my comrades. I cut my hair short, which is less accurate to the period, but I've gotten more folks immediately see me as male. One soldier asked if I was my sergeant's son and neither of us corrected him. We're not related btw. I'll never forget my colonel at Fort Ti catching himself at "She--" or the way I now have learned my name, Samuel, and respond well to it and unlearned my deadname. I have an excuse for my transphobic parents to see me called by my male name. I have an excuse to buy trans tape (I can't even articulate how much binding tape has saved me--reenacting is intense exercise and therefore a binder isn't healthy) and deepen my voice to sing or yell HUZZA and use makeup to simulate facial hair (NOT for 1700s though).
Even so, some members of the audience demand to know "why I'm a girl." How can I, a person born with "F" on my birth certificate, dare dress as a male and carry a musket? What do I know about history, being a "woman?" And I tell them about Hannah Snell, Deborah Sampson, Mary Lacey, Mary Ann Talbot, Phoebe Hessel, Johanna Sophia Kettner, Anna Maria Lane, Ana María de Soto, Jeanette Colin, and many more. And while these people cannot be labelled "queer" or "trans," I wonder if they felt the way I feel. At least, in the context of my existence, I can speak about theirs. Yet still, even men I consider friends, doubt this reality. Yes, he's right to say Sybil Ludington and Molly Pitcher and Lucy Brewer are likely fiction, but even so, reality inspires fiction. Hannah Snell was very much real and very much did serve in the army and later the marines. Why is that history so hard to believe? Why does my existence demand an explanation?
And yet reenacting is my gender euphoria.
#history#reenacting#american revolution#gender#lgbtqia#trans#it's late and im tired and i needed to say this i think#reenacting is my escape from reality 100%#and so with that comes a lot of unexpected acceptance#and also the usual transphobic comments or implications#but less so

It was also a lot of fun to make it out to the Battle of Stoney Creek war of 1812 reenactment. I’d wanted to get out to an 1812 event to take photos and this was great. Unfortuantely I only had a couple of hours to stick around. I’d like to get more opportunity to shoot a full event, especially the camp life, women, kids, officers - the stuff you don’t see the details of during the battles.
