So Vivzie just tweeted this and I have thoughts that won't fit well into tweets so here I am
For starters, the criticism of fanfiction isn't targeted towards the queer aspects. In fact I've found that some of the most extreme critics of fanfiction culture are also queer people. From the fujoshi fandom that causes an extreme rise in MlM shipping but largely for fem gazey smut, the unrecognised untagged unhealthy relationship tropes, to the misogyny often within these works, stories like these come with many issues.
The criticism of writing feeling like fanfiction, especially towards Helluva Boss, is that the elements of the stories people heavily critique feel unnecessary, tropey, and derailing from consistency.
In The Circus, I do not fault the idea of a queer character having a childhood crush on a same sex friend. The problem is more to do with how it stunts the desperation Blitz has to keep his business alive, since he's no longer just sleeping with some rich guy but an old friend, and the sudden unexpectedness of their situation. It's also a common trope where the live interests actually knew each other as kids so it feels overdone and generic.
In Exes and Oohs, the mafia setting feels completely bizarre considering the intense bigotry and classism within the world. Not only that but the daddy issues, fridged mum, forced marriage and overall unrealistic depiction of the mafia is very common in fanfiction written by teens who do no research and just want the aesthetics.
Secondly, there are plenty of straight works that have a similar label attached to them. ACOTAR and TOH both have writers who originally wrote fanfiction and they didn't develop out of the negative habits within fanfiction writing. Therefore their original work feels like fanfiction. Riverdales "I'm weird, I'm a weirdo" speech was heavily critiqued for sounding like a fanfiction line.
Thirdly, a big reason for being compared to fanfiction is the unfinished feeling of the scripts. I've already pointed out in a previous post that some of the dialogue in Western Energy felt like it needed to be cut down by an editor. And most people agree that the situations and logic aren't often very well thought through, such as how the aging machine could have just been reversed or how DORKS should have been killed off. The scripts feel like loose first drafts that could use additional edits. Fanfiction usually doesn't have an editor or even a beta reader, I've seen more "no beta we die like *insert character*" tags in many of the fandoms I read for than "beta" tags.
If people critiqued the owl house for feeling fanficcy because it had a diverse cast in a highschool setting with a quirky MC, I'd agree it's a bad descriptor because it's directly the queer and neurodivergent stories that are being attacked. Or if Murder Drones was labelled as fanficcy because it has an edgy teen female MC I'd say it's unfair because a lot of girls genuinely act like that and deserve to be represented and have our stories told. But most of the criticism about Helluva Boss to do with its LGBT rep is less to do with its inclusion and more to do with people feeling it's falling into yaoi tropes. Not the fact it includes queer stories.
This is something We Are Not Alive said recently that such with me, but just because it's an indie project doesn't mean we have to settle for subpar writing. There are loads of indie productions you can support! Murder Drones, Lackadaisy, the animated Anne Frank movie, and these are just some of the more popular ones!
And I wish people would stop weaponising every single argument to try and defend issues in Helluva Boss. The fandom says "of course it has issues" then cries when we point that out.

Apparently Halle Bailey has joined Rachel Zegler on the "we're so much better than the original" train. I just saw an article where she claims they changed it so that Ariel "doesn't leave the ocean for a boy". Did these people even watch the original? Ariel did not leave the ocean for a boy!
Yeah, I saw that, and the director released a statement that cosigned it...and here's the thing, people are blindly defending Halle and I get it because she had a lot of people supporting her before she even starting shooting for this movie. To an extent I understand- I do think she has more talent than the other actresses they've cast...but also, why does every single actress and live action Disney cast have to make the same exact point of discreating the values of the original creations that are providing a star vehicle for them in the same, tired way with baseless accusations? Halle is giving Ariel a lot more respect than Rachel gives Snow White or Lily gives Cinderella (though most of the love and respect Halle gives for the character is kind of just admiration for her reflection in Ariel as opposed to the actual character, but I'll take that over Rachel's view on Snow White any day), but it still honestly makes me uncomfortable and I don't understand how the Disney marketing team hasn't progressed with their messaging in over a decade. Can we please stop beating up women, fictional or otherwise, that are from an older time? Can we start exercising understanding and diversity of thought instead of condemning women with an "old is bad, new is good" ideology??? Can we stop intentionally misreading women's goals and desires and wants for their life so that we can cast them aside, only to replace them with soulless 2.0 next generation versions of something they already established? To say I'd be surprised that this is the direction it's continuing wouldn't be right, but I am disappointed.

Alright, since I can’t sleep and I’m bored, I’m going to list a few things that I hate about Tony Stark/RDJ, and his “fans”. If youre a Tony/RDJ fan pls ignore this.
Tony Stark made weapons for the military and only stopped because he was nearly killed and no
It wasn’t because he “felt bad” for those that were actually being harmed by the weapons. It was for his personal benefit
He constantly flirts with and messes with women while dating pepper
In the first IM movie, he made a transphobic joke and in an interview for his Sherlock movie, made a joke about cross-dressing
In AOU he made a rape joke, saying that if he ends up ruling Asgard, he’d reinstall pre minocta (or however you spell it)
He made Ultron, and before you start with the whole “B-b-but Wanda mind raped him!”
Firstly, wtf is mind rape? Really? For anyone who says mind rape y’all need therapy—maybe more so than Wanda
Anyways, he made Ultron and in civil war, had the A U D A C I T Y to say “we need to be put in place” as if it was the avenger’s fault that he created Ultron.
And him being the Rich white dude he was, he knew the accords wouldn’t effect him. He could still break the law without any consequences.
So he a brought a 15 year old child into battle with professionals, lied about his age, and didn’t even tell him the full reason of why he was fighting
Also? He thinks? Him and Steve? Were friends? Last I checked, they couldn’t stand each other, and had a hard time working together
So when he says “I wAs YoUr FrIeNd ToO” uh no. He’s known Bucky for 100 actual years. You guys have known each other for like 2, with 6 month breaks from working together
Homecoming, he completely neglects Peter and passes him off to happy, who ignores him as well
And then takes away the suit because Peter was trying to do his job.
You could give the excuse—“he sent government agents after the vulture!”
Yes. And toomes overpowered them by a lot so that didn’t do anything
Tony says he doesn’t want to end up like his father, but it just as emotionally distant as him
I cant even begin with that one scene in IW when he HAD THE CHANCE TO CALL STEVE AND ASK FOR HELP TO DEFEAT THANOS, BUT DIDNT. OUT OF PURE STUPIDITY AND HIS MASSIVE EGO
AND THEN WHEN HE AND HIS TEAM LOSES, HE’S??? SURPRISED???
LIKE, YEAH DUDE BECAUSE YOU HAVE PETER QUILL ON YOUR TEAM OBSESSING OVER HIS DEAD GIRLFRIEND smh
The endgame scene where he basically yells at Steve for “not being there” knowing full well that if Steve were to come out of hiding, he would’ve been arrested
Has a child five years later and then suddenly on tumblr, he’s “dad of the year” even tho he got like two scene with his kid...I mean...Stan Scott Lang
Him figuring out time travel makes no sense??
How’d he get pym particles of Hank kept his work secretive??
I’m telling you if Shuri hadn’t been dusted away, they wouldn’t have needed tony I stg
Fast forward and now he’s dead, and lemme tell you—it took EVERYTHING not to laugh at their faces.
Scott, Hank, Janet, Hope, Wanda, and Bucky, to be specific.
I mean
HE ALMOST KILLED BUCKY, KILLED WANDA’S ENTRE FAMILY, AND SCOTT JUST HATES HIM
They didn’t even wanna be there lmao
Ok, now that that’s done with, let’s move onto RDJ
I really never liked him as an actor because he has limited range when it comes to characters
By which I mean all of his characters are cocky, smart, “handsome”, and “funny”
They aren’t, but k
But now that he defended Crisp ratt for being a T*umpet supporter and a homophobe, I hate him even more now
And it’s not even because he’s standing up for ratt
It’s because he never showed this type of compassion when his female and cast mates of color were being attacked for their roles
Brie Larson got rape and death threats for being captain marvel, and only wanting more diversity/better pay for herself
Zendaya got hate because she was the first black MJ
Ratt got hate because he attended a homophobic church that supported conversion therapy
Guess which one RDJ defended?
Yup
And not only that but he’s just a really unfunny person. He’s basically Tony Stark and not in a good way
Though there isn’t a good way to be Tony Stark in the first place
NOW onto my favorite part
RDJ/Tony stocks fan club
Or “defense squad” as they call themselves, as if tonky doesn’t have enough defense already, with his suits and all
His fans ignore every flaw about his character and the actor himself
They constantly say how he’s a father figure to Peter, Shuri, nebula, Harley, when really...no
Peter has a father figure—Ben Parker
Shuri already had a father
Nebula didn’t have a good father, but in no means did they interact more than the beginning of endgame
He literally called Harley a p*say for MOURNING OVER HIS ABSENT FATHER
like haha ok Stark you can’t talk
Just because you have your own sob story doesn’t mean you can project that onto others to silence THEIR trauma
And that’s another thing—
His fans claim to say that he “portrays ptsd” more than any other avenger accurately
A C C U R A T E L Y???
Wanda and Pietro?
Steve?
Natasha?
Bucky?
Peter Parker?
Gamora?
Nebula?
Harley?
Literally anyone else but him???
What angers me the most, however, is that people will go as far as to say that Wanda is a nazi b*tch, but...
Not her brother
And I’m being dead serious—no post about “anti-maximoff” ever mentions pietro
Only wanda, as if she were an only child
Well now she is but that wasn’t the point
Their internal mysoginy hurts me both physically and mentally
I’m sorry I made it so long, but if you’d like proof of any of the points I’ve made, I’ll be happy to provide them (;

idk this might be a ☆controversial opinion☆ or something, but just because something is popular or controlled by a megacorp doesnt mean it’s “bad”. this goes for media and pretty much anything else. basically don’t shame people for liking things, specifically media. there are 3 mindsets i see pretty often, all of which are fairly toxic to varying degrees.
(Note: all of these are my own beliefs and thoughts. i dont want to speak for everyone; this is my moral stance. also this got long)
(Note #2. i am fully guilty of doing all of these at some point in time)
the first is cancel culture. i am of the pretty firm mindset that you’re the only one who should control what you consume. if you know that, lets say a musician is advocating for something homophobic, but you absolutely adore their music, listening to it doesnt make you a bad person. buying their albums doesn’t make you a bad person. being touched by their music doesnt make you a bad person. just because they are doing something against your morals/beliefs/identity, doesnt mean you should instantly cut off all contact with their media. why? first off, people make mistakes. that person might have a change of heart, or be educated on why what they did was wrong, or something else. if everyone immediately stops consuming their media, a teaching moments might never happen. #2, the more obvious reason. it’s your media experience. by listening to their music, you are not saying you support every single thing they’re saying. all it means is that theyre good at their job. ie producing music
the second mindset: cringe culture. ohh boy i dislike cringe culture. lets roll with the earlier example. let’s say you really like a musician. their music helped you through a rough time, or you really connect to it, or it just bops. this musician is really mainstream, like everyone has heard of them (think Taylor Swift kind of big). lets say you go to your friend, vibrating with excitement, and tell them you’re excited about the musician’s new album. they scoff, and call you basic for liking them, and say you jumped on the bandwagon. why was that bad? 1, my point earlier, its your media experience. you like the music. there is literally nothing wrong with that. 2, which is the point that always awes me. if the musician is really popular, and you like them, it doesnt mean youre basic or that you jumped on the bandwagon. it means one thing and one thing alone. they’re good at their job, which is producing music multiple people like.
(supernatural, sherlock, doctor who, hunger games, etc are not bad because theyre liked by a lot of people. it’s the job of the creators to make them be popular)
which brings me to my third mindset. this one is a lot less toxic, but if you push it on people as a necessity or hold yourself above others cause you do it, it’s toxic. Consuming media critically. it’s good to consume media with an eye out for negative messages, but it’s not always necessary. I’m going to use a new example. if you read a book that has a fairly non-diverse cast (ie mostly white, men, able-bodied, straight, cis, etc) and you like it, and use it as an escape or just a fun read, you are not required to go read or write a dissertation on how not-diverse it is. you are not required to know the full motivation of the writer. as a not cis, not straight, disabled girl, i do not see myself reflected in media often. i can still consume media that doesn’t feature characters like me, and i can do it without having to defend it as Reading With A Critical Eye. If you like doing that, props to you! it’s sometimes interesting to read your dissertations and think of things i hadn’t before. but if you say everyone should do it, or that they’re a bad reader if they don’t, that’s toxic. why? because 1, for some, consuming media is an escape from a world where they must constantly view things critically. 2, if a piece of media is very near and dear to someone’s heart, informing them all the ways it could be problematic is hurtful.
tldr, a person controls their own media consumption, and is not required to demonstrate they regret it’s popular, may have problematic content, or that the creators may be reprehensible
And y’all, have fun! enjoy your shows and movies and books, let yourself be lost, and try not to let the negative parts of fandoms get you down! There’s good bits in everything, and don’t be afraid to block people who give you a negative experience.
(ps, i know there are exceptions to every rule. i go through life and try not to involve myself too heavily in these mindsets, but sometimes there is media where you have to consume it critically, or where you have to state the fact that the author very firmly sucks)
(pps, I’m sorry for inconsistent grammer or spelling, i cut my thumb and typed this mostly one handed)

lol love how you defend tom h and zendaya like they're babies newsflash they're grown adults stop defending their nasty deeds. tom h is a racist white xenophobic male who refuses to date black women irl and zendaya is a pro israel anti jew clout chaser who steals roles from middle eastern people but continue to stan them i guess
Man, I always get this exact same message explained in different ways every month. They do one bad thing once and they’re forever labeled.
I know they’re adults, sweetheart. That doesn’t mean I’m going to just let people walk all over them because they did a bad thing once. Adults make mistakes too.
tom h is a racist white xenophobic male who refuses to date black women irl
Tom Holland is not racist. I’m sorry you believe that but unless you can provide me with proof of that then I suggest not spreading false information. Xenophobic? Is this about Eric Nam? Yes, I know what Tom said is considered a microaggression for many Asian-Americans but you need to take into consideration that the interview was happening in Korea, there was no way for Tom to know that Eric was American. But let that be a lesson for him next time. And you’re saying he refuses to date black women? Is this because he didn’t date Zendaya? Are we still talking about this? Is he obligated to date her as a mandatory requirement for acceptance? No, he can date whoever he wants. And yes, he’s white and he’s a male, the only thing you were right about.
zendaya is a pro israel anti jew clout chaser who steals roles from middle eastern people
Zendaya is not pro-Israel, and just like I said with Tom, unless you can provide proof of this, don’t spread false information. The anti-jew thing is because she laughed at Spider-Man being Jewish or the picture of the soldier? My god. She didn’t know Spider-Man is Jewish, and I get that laughing wasn’t right but she didn’t laugh because she hates that fact or because she wants to make fun of it. And the thing about stealing middle eastern roles, I’m going to assume that this is because of her new up-coming movie Dune. I get that Dune is literally about Islamic culture, and I’ve talked with a lot of people who feel insulted that they decided to use Zendaya as a diversity point in a movie about their culture instead of casting a black arab/middle eastern actor. If someone feels offended because of this, you have every right but instead of just accusing her, why not educate her? Why not tell her she’s doing something that makes others feel uncomfortable? She’s a pretty reasonable young woman, I’m sure she’s going to provide you with an answer or at least she’s going to try to correct that. And if you’re the same anon who told me that she took the role only because of ‘aesthetic’, I don’t think so, sweetheart. Let her explain first.
Don’t cancel people their whole lives, ok? Let them grow up and learn from their mistakes, you and I both know we’re not perfect. The thing is, it’s easy to judge when it’s not you the one in front of the cameras. I’m sure all of us have done things society would cancel us for. Nobody is perfect.

TT’S GONNA RECOMMEND SOME SELF-PUBLISHED KAIJU FICTION
Because the mood struck me
(and also because I’ve been meaning to give these a full fledged reviews for a RIDICULOUSLY LONG TIME and I’m kind of embarrassed how long it’s been taking so I figure if I do some quickies I’ll feel less bad about myself as a person ok LET’S GO)
I’m gonna start with the Daikaiju Yuki series by Raffael Coronelli, because its first entry was also the first self published kaiju novel I read. This series is fun and fast paced, with wonderful characters and dynamic storylines in a highly unique setting: a post-post apocaylptic world, where humanity has rebuilt civilization after a kaiju war hundreds of years ago destroyed the old one (i.e. ours). The protagonist of the series, Yuki, partners up with one of the few kaiju who decided to defend humanity back in the kaiju war, a grouchy old bipedal lion named Narajin, and the two essentially fuse to fight various threats to their world with the other remaining members of the Pantheon Colossi (i.e. the protector kaiju).
(Our heroes, Yuki and Narajin, ready to conquer your kaiju-fan heart)
For newbies, this series covers a lot of kaiju tropes in an engaging and unique way that actually serves as a pretty decent primer for how this genre stands out from other monster fiction. For experienced kaiju fans, the new twists author Raffael Coronelli has put on the old tropes and the innovations he’s added solely of his own invention make for a take on the genre that is astoundingly fresh, managing the difficult task of paying homage to what came before while crafting something very new and distinct from it.
I also can’t stress enough how fun these books are. The characters grow on you very quickly, and the stories move at a lively pace that makes the books very easy to digest while still having a lot of substance. Also there’s a LOT of content to consume here, so if you find you like the first book, you’re in luck - because not only is there a lot more of what you liked in the other entries, but Coronelli’s writing has gotten even better with each installment.
Buy them here:
Daikaiju Yuki
Yuki Conquers the World
Yuki vs. Fleshworld
Mokwa: The Lifesblood of the Earth (a spinoff focusing on another member of the Pantheon Colossi - also has the best villain of the whole series IMO)
Scythian Frost (short story anthology in the same universe as Daikaiju Yuki)
Pharoah of Eels (novella in the same universe as Daikaiju Yuki)
BONUS: I’m gonna link Coronelli’s Big Egg here because while it’s arguably more of a Weird West story than a kaiju story and not part of the Daikaiju Yuki series, it’s nonetheless VERY GOOD and kaiju-adjacent enough to feel relevant.
If you love it when kaiju stories go dark and experiment with body horror - and I know a good chunk of my followers here do, both from the posts you make and from the sheer number of body horror-riffic entries you’ve submitted to my Create a Kaiju Contests in the past - you owe it to yourself to read All Your Ruins by Alex Gayhart. It is a bleak kaiju story that leans as far into the horror as kaiju stories can, while still retaining many of a kaiju story’s hallmarks. You’ve got experimental robots, you’ve got a big lizard who shoots lasers from his mouth and has a few suprisingly poignant and tragic moments of pathos, you’ve got scenes of massive property damage - and you’ve also got scenes of people being torn apart by swarms of giant bugs, poisoned by toxic kaiju blood, assimilated into piles of fungus, and all other sorts of horrifying demises. If you want a kaiju story to send chills down your spine, this is your book.
I’m emphasizing the grim aspects of this story, but I also want to note that it avoids one of the pitfalls a lot of modern horror falls into, in that it balances all the horrific shit by having characters in it that you actually care about. It’s a tragedy, you know from the start things won’t end well, but some of the people involved in the conflict are so lovable and try so hard to survive that you root for them despite the prevailing sense of dread. It’s a gloomy story, but it’s not the sort that makes everyone relentlessly awful - more George Romero Day of the Dead in tone than, say, the all consuming bleakness of The Walking Dead.
Also it’s got some killer illustrations. The main monster even takes the “bipedal lizard with dorsal spikes” visual in a direction so unique that it actually stands out against the progenitor of that design concept. That’s not the say the book depends on those illustrations, mind you - Gayhart’s prose isn’t afraid of laying it on thick every now and then to paint an appropriately distinct and horrific image with words. That might not be for all tastes, but as a person who’s read a LOT of classic horror literature, I personally appreciate it - a dash of melodrama in the description of the horrific, when used well, can make it very effective, and Gayhart put just enough in there to work very well for my tastes.
Buy it here:
All Your Ruins
BONUS: I’m going to recommend the two books in author Alex Gayhart’s Black Star Saga here as well. I haven’t actually fully read them yet - I bought the initial release where the two volumes were bundled together as one, and got sidetracked by LIFE BULLSHIT shortly after I started it (this happens to me too often while reading - I still need to finish Stephen King’s It and Marie Kondo’s books too), but I liked what I read, and from what I’ve heard the more recent editions made some big improvements to the story’s pacing. It’s the same quality of writing as Gayhart’s All Your Ruins, but with a less grim tone - more Ultraman and less Shin Godzilla.
The Black Star Saga Volume 1: 2525
The Black Star Saga Volume 2: Moonage Daydream
A lot of classic kaiju movies bring up the threat of giant monsters destroying all of civilization if they aren’t stopped, but almost none have shown them carry that threat through. In the Shadow of Extinction let’s that threat actually play out - you see the kaiju apocalypse begin and civilization as we know it end in the first third of the book. The remaining two thirds focuses on survivors picking up the pieces in a world now ruled by giants. It’s the kind of story you’d think there’d be more of in our genre, but outside of All Your Ruins and, uh, the Godzilla anime trilogy, there really aren’t that other takes out there.
While Gayhart’s All Your Ruins focuses on the horror aspect of a kaiju apocalypse, Kyle Warner’s In the Shadow of Extinction focuses on a political/crisis management angle. It’s like if Shin Godzilla had a baby with George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, and that baby had the “bureaucratic failings of big governments in the wake of national disasters” elements of the former and the “multiple different perspectives via a large cast of characters” format of the later. There’s no one protagonist in this one - you follow a large and diverse cast of characters from around the world and from pretty much all walks of life as they try to navigate a disaster that destroys society as it once was.
Once the civilization effectively ends in the first third of the novel, In the Shadow of Extinction transition from “disaster movie” to “post apocalyptic thriller,” like The Stand, Day of the Triffids, 28 Days Later, or, I dunno, a toned down version of Mad Max (but, y’know, with giant monsters, so I guess not THAT toned down). I bring this up because the content of the last two thirds takes after the tropes of post apocalyptic thrillers as much if not more so than kaiju stories - that is to say, there is some Triggering Content in this one. That’s not something to dissuade you - the characters and story remains very solid and unique for the kaiju genre - but it is something I feel you should be aware of, and if you want a more explicit description of what kind of Triggers I mean here, shoot me a message. Suffice to say, kaiju aren’t the only monsters when civilization breaks down here.
But Kaiju do remain prominent in the book nonetheless - it is ultimately a kaiju story more than anything else, and it’s impressive how the book manages to incorporate all those other influences as well as a heaping dose of political commentary without ever diminishing the presence of its monster stars.
Buy it here:
In the Shadow of Extinction
And now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to do what I should have done years ago and write some damn Amazon reviews for these so the authors can have a boost in Amazon’s search algorithms.

controversial opinions?
Cold pizza actually not good. Tastes like angry bacteria.
There’s a completely separate class of gay men who are in a different, rainbow-tinted plane of reality from the rest of us and I don’t like them. They push for “acceptance” via commercialization of the Pride movement, assimilation through over-exposure, and focus on sexualizing the movement to be “provocative” and writing annoying articles that reek of class privilege instead of something actually important like lgbtqa youth homelessness, job discrimination, and mental health awareness.
Coleslaw is good. You guys just suck in the kitchen.
Generational divides ARE real: a 16-year-old and a 60-year-old right now in 2021 could agree on every hot button sociopolitical topic and yet not even realize it because they communicate in entirely different ways.
Sam Wilson is a power bottom. No I will not elaborate.
Allison’s makeover in The Breakfast Club good, not bad. She kept literally and metaphorically dumping her trash out onto the table and it’s clearly a cry for help. Having the attention and affection of a smart, pretty girl doing her makeup for her was sweet and helped her open up to new experiences. Not every loner wants to BE a loner (see: Bender, who is fine being a lone wolf).
Movie/show recommendations that start with a detailed “representation” list read like status-effecting gear in an RPG and it’s actually a turn-off for me. I have to force myself to give something a try in spite of it.
Yelling at people to just “learn a new language” because clearly everyone who isn’t you and your immediate vicinity of friends must be a lazy ignorant white American is so fucking stupid, like I get it, you’re mad someone doesn’t immediately know how to pronounce your name or what something means. But I know 2 languages and am struggling with a 3rd when I can between 2 jobs and quite frankly, I don’t have the time to just absorb the entire kanji system into my brain to learn Japanese by tomorrow night, or suddenly learn Arabic or Welsh. There are 6500 recorded languages in the world, what’s the chance that one of 3 I’ve learn(ed?) is the one you’re yelling at me about. Yes this is referring to that post yelling at people for not knowing how to pronounce obscure Irish names and words. Sometimes just explaining something instead of admonishing people for not knowing something inherently in the belief that everyone must be lazy entitled privileged people is uh... better?
Stop fucking yelling at people. I despise feeling like someone is yelling at me or scolding me, it triggers my Violence Mode, you don’t run me, you are not God, fuck off. Worst fucking way to "educate” people, it just feels good in the moment to say or write and doesn’t help. Yes I’ve done it before.
Violence is good actually.
Characters doing bad things ≠ an endorsement of bad things. Characters doing bad things that are unquestioned by the entire rest of the cast = endorsement of bad things, or at the least, a power fantasy by the creator. See: Glee, in which Sue’s awfulness is constantly called out, while Mr. Shue’s awfulness rarely is because he’s “the hero.” See also: the Lightbringer series, in which the protagonist is a violent manipulator who is praised as clever, charming, diplomatic, and genius by every supporting character (enemies included), despite the text never demonstrating such.
Euphoria is good, actually. It falls into this niche of the past decade of “dark gritty teen shows” but actually has substance behind it, but the general vibe I get from passive-aggressive tumblr posts from casual viewers is that this show is The Devil, and the criticism of its racier content screams pearl-clutching “what about the children??” to me.
Describing all diagnosed psychopaths as violent criminals is a damaging slippery slope, sure. But I won’t be mad at anyone for inherently distrusting another human who does not have the ability to feel guilt and remorse, empathy, is a pathological liar, or proves to be cunning and manipulative.
It’s actually not easy to unconditionally support and love everyone everywhere when you’ve actually experienced the World. Your perspective and values will be challenged as you encounter difficult people, experience hardship, are torn between conflicting ideas and commitments, and fail. My vow to never ever call the cops on another black person was challenged when an employee’s boyfriend marched into the kitchen OF AN ESTABLISHMENT to scream at her, in a BUSINESS I MANAGED, and threaten to BEAT the SHIT out of her. Turns out I can hate cops and hate that motherfucker equally, I am more than capable of both.
Defending makeup culture bad, actually. Enjoy it, experiment, master it, but don’t paint it as something other than upholding exactly what they want from you. Even using makeup to “defy the heteropatriarchal oppressors!” is still putting cash in their pockets, no matter how camp...
Not every villain needs to be redeemed, some of you just never outgrew projecting yourself onto monsters and killers.
Writing teams and networks queerbaiting is not the same as individuals queerbaiting. Nick Jonas performing exclusively at gay clubs to generate an audience really isn’t criminal; if they paid to go see him, that’s on them, he didn’t promise anyone anything other than music and a show. Do not paint this as similar to wealthy, bigoted executives and writing teams trying to snatch up the LGBTQA demographic with vague ass marketing and manipulative screenplays, only to cop out so as not to alienate their conservative audiences. And ESPECIALLY when the artists/actors/creators accused of queerbaiting or lezploitation then come out as queer in some form later on.
Queer is not a bad word, and I’ve no clue how that remains one of few words hurled at LGBTQA people that can’t be reclaimed. It’s so archaic and underused at this point that I don’t get the reaction to it compared to others.
People who defend grown-woman Lorelai Gilmore’s childish actions and in the same breath heavily criticize teenage religious abuse victim Lane Kim’s actions are not to be trusted. Also Lane deserved better.
Keep your realism out of my media, or at least make it tonally consistent. Tired of shows and movies and books where some gritty, dark shit comes out of nowhere when the narrative was relatively Romantic beforehand.
Actually people should be writing characters different from themselves, this new wave in the past year of “If you aren’t [X] you shouldn’t be writing [X]” is a complete leap backward from the 2010s media diversity movement. And if [X] has to do with an invisible minority status (not immediately visible disabilities, or diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, persecuted religious affiliations, mental illness) it’s actually quite fucked up to assume the creator can’t be whatever [X] is or to demand receipts or details of someone’s personal life to then grant them “permission” to create something. I know, we’re upset an actual gay actor wasn’t casted to play this gay character, so let’s give them shit about it: and not lose a wink of sleep when 2 years later, this very actor comes out and gives a detailed account of the pressure to stay closeted if they wanted success in Hollywood.
Projecting an actor’s personal romantic life and gender identity onto the characters they play is actually many levels of fucked up, and not cute or funny. See: reinterpreting every character Elliot Page has played through a sapphic lens, and insulting his ability to play straight characters while straight actors play actual caricatures of us (See also: Jared Leto. Fuck him).
I’m fucking sick of DaBaby, he sucks. “I shot somebody, she suck my peepee” that’s 90% of whatever he raps about.
“Political Correctness” is not new. It was, at one point, unacceptable to walk into a fine establishment and inform the proprietor that you love a nice firm pair of tits in your face. 60 years ago, such a statement would get you throw out and possibly arrested under suspicion of public intoxication. But then something happened and I blame Woodstock and Nixon. And now I have to explain to a man 40 years my senior that no, you can’t casually mention to the staff here, many of whom are children, how you haven’t had a good fuck in a while. And then rant about the “Chinese who gave us the virus.” Can’t be that upset with them if you then refused to wear your mask for 20 minutes.
Triggering content should not have a blanket ban; trigger warnings are enough, and those who campaign otherwise need to understand the difference between helping people and taking away their agency. 13 Reasons Why inspired this one. Absolutely shitty show, sure, but it’s a choice to watch it knowing exactly what it contains.
Sasuke’s not a fucking INTJ, he’s an ISFP whose every decision is based off in-the-moment feelings and proves incapable of detailed and logical planning to accomplish his larger goals.
MCU critique manages to be both spot-on and pointless. Amazing stories have been told with these characters over the course of decades; but most of it is toilet paper. Expecting a Marvel movie to be a deeply detailed examination of American nationalism and imperialism painted with a colorful gauze of avant-garde film technique is like expecting filet mignon from McDonalds. Scarf down your quarter pounder or gtfo.
Disparagingly comparing the popularity and (marginal) success of BLM to another movement is anti-black. It is not only possible but also easy to ask for people’s support without throwing in “you all supported BLM for black people but won’t show support for [insert group]” how about you keep our name out your mouth? Black people owe the rest of the world nothing tbh until yall root out the anti-blackness in your own communities.
It is the personal demon/tragic flaw of every cis gay/bi/pan man to externalize and exorcize Shame: I’m talking about the innate compulsion to Shame, especially in the name of Pride and Progress. Shame for socioeconomic “success,” shame for status of outness, shame for fitness and health, shame for looks, shame for style and dress, shame for how one fits into the gender binary, shame for sexual positions and intimacy preferences, shame for fucking music tastes. Put down the weapon that They used to beat you. Becoming the Beater is not growth, it’s the worst-case scenario.
Works by minorities do not have to be focused on their marginalized identities. Some ladies want to ride dragons AND other ladies. The pressure on minorities to create the Next Great Minority Character Study that will inevitably get snuffed at the Oscars/Peabody Awards is some bullshit when straight white dudes walk around shitting out mediocre screenplays and books.
Canadians can stfu about how the US is handling COVID-19 actually. Love most of yall, but the number of Canadian snowbirds on vacation (VACATION??? VA.CAT.ION.) in the supposed “hotbed” of my region that I’ve had to inform our mask policies and social distancing to is ASTOUNDING. Incroyable! I guess your country has a sizable population of entitled, privileged, inconsiderate, wealthy, and ignorant people making things difficult for everyone, just like mine :)
No trick to eliminate glasses fog while wearing my mask has worked, not a single one, it actually has affected my job and work speed and is incredibly frustrating, and I have to deal with it and pretend it’s not a problem while still encouraging others to follow the rules for everyone’s safety and the cognitive dissonance is driving me insane.
It’s really really really not anti-Japanese... to be uncomfortable with the rampant pedophilia in manga and anime, and voice this. I really can’t compare western animation’s sneakier bullshit with pantyshots of a 12-year-old girl.
Most of the people in the cottagecore aesthetic/tag have zero interest in all the hard work that comes with maintaining an isolated property in the countryside, milking cows and tending crops before sunrise, etc. And that’s okay? They just like flowers and pretty pottery and homemade pastries. Idk where discourse about this came from.
You think mint chip ice-cream tastes like toothpaste because you’re missing a receptor that can distinguish the flavors, and that sucks for you. It’s a sort of “taste-blindness” that can make gum spicy to some while others can eat a ghost pepper without crying.
Being a spectacle for the oppressive class doesn’t make them respect us, it makes them unafraid of us. This means they continue to devour us, but without fear of our retaliation.
Only like 4 people on tumblr dot com are actually prepared for the full ramifications of an actual revolution. The rest of you just really imprinted onto Katniss, or grew up in the suburbs.
Straight crushes are normal. They’re people first, sexual orientation second. Can’t always know.
The road to body positivity is not easy, especially if what you desire is what you aren’t.
You’re actually personally responsible for not voluntarily bringing yourself into an environment that you know is not fit for you unless you have the resolve to manage it. Can’t break a glass ceiling without getting a few cuts. This one’s a shoutout to my homophobic temp coworkers who decided working a venue with a drag show would be a good idea. This is also is a shoutout to people who want to make waves but are surprised when the boat tips. And also a shoutout to people who—wait that’s it’s own controversial opinion hold up.
Straight people can and should stay the fuck out of gay bars and queer spaces. “yoUrE bEInG diVisiVe” go fuck yourself.

do you think you could list out like the titles of the different sections/acts with their corresponding films/when they take place? sorry if this is like a lot i just find a lot of comfort in the fullness of the mcu and i would love to see kind of like an what the mm universe looks like ? sorry if this is weird rip
Not weird at all omg!! I’ve been meaning to post something like that! Just a heads up, the MMCU is...slightly less cinematic than the canon MCU, as a lot of the original plotlines I imagine as comics or graphic novels.
Guide
Format
So the format for this list goes like
Fic Title | MMCU Title | Media Type
For example:
Out of the Woods | Black Widow: Out of the Woods | Movie
Means that the fic is called Out of the Woods, but if the MMCU were canon, it’d be a movie called Black Widow: Out of the Woods
If the MMCU Title is followed by (Canon) that means the fic correlates to a canon piece of material, as opposed to an original plotline. For example:
Battle Royale | Avengers (Canon) | Movie
Means that the fic Battle Royale corresponds to the Avengers, and largely follows the canon plotline of that arc.
An asterisk at the beginning, and only one title, means the movie exists in the MMCU, but happens as it does in canon, with no OC interference. Example:
*Black Panther | Movie
Means there’s no corresponding fic or replacement fic for that movie (...yet), but that it still takes place within the MMCU canon. Note that I’ve only done this with movies; suffice it to say that aside from Agents of SHIELD, all MCU-based TV series are MM canon; if they aren’t listed, it’s just because I have no OCs or non-canon plotlines for them. Same goes for Marvel Shorts. As for canon tie-in comics, I haven’t read enough of them to decide which ones are MM canon or not; once I’ve read them all I’ll update this list accordingly if necessary.
Other Notes
The list is of all fics, in chronological order, so ones that don’t focus on Leila’s arc have been marked as spin-offs. They still take place in the MMCU, and they’re placed in the list according to when they take place, they’re just not Leila-focused. (If there’s interest, I might do another version of this list organized by when things are released, rather than chronological order, EG Captain Marvel would be part of Phase 3 instead of Phase 1, Black Widow: Family Business would be listed after Endgame, etc.)
The first fic (The Kindness of Strangers, aka the first two chapters of MM on ffnet) is weird because I see it being split, with one chapter being told as a marvel short and the second one being told as a tie-in comic, with the very last scene of Leila being sent by Fury to recruit Steve also existing as a post-credit scene for CA:TFA.
Some of these I haven’t come up with titles for yet, so I just put working titles or descriptors. AKA “Untitled AoS Replacement Fic” is obviously not called that, it’s a fic that I haven’t titled yet that serves as a replacement for Agents of SHIELD in the MMCU.
Finally, this is all subject to change, I’m still ironing out a lot of things--for example, I may make an OC for Ant-Man, and I might go back to using MCU’s Spidey. We’ll see. (I may release a variation on this list as to what the MMCU looks like with MCU Spidey as opposed to TASM Spidey.)
Without further ado, here is the MMCU as I currently imagine it!
Mirror, Mirror Cinematic Universe
PHASE ONE
Captain America: The First Avenger | Movie
Has a post-credits scene that corresponds to the last scene of TKOS, in which Nick Fury assigns Leila to recruit Steve to help find the tesseract
Untitled Captain Marvel Fic | Captain Marvel | Movie
The OC doesn’t appear anywhere else, but they’re important to Leila’s story. (Hint: It has to do with the Patrice Joh mystery.)
The Kindness of Strangers ch. 1 | Recruitment Day | Marvel Short
Note: despite taking place about ~4-5 years before the events of The Avengers, this short is only released shortly before the movie, as a way to build up hype.
*Iron Man | Movie
*The Incredible Hulk | Movie
*Iron Man 2 | Movie
*Thor | Movie
The Kindness of Strangers, ch. 2 | Royal Engagements (Prelude to Marvel’s The Avengers) | Tie-In Comic
The Kindness of Strangers (Last Scene) | N/A | Post-Credits Scene (CA:TFA)
Battle Royale | The Avengers (Canon) | Movie
-
PHASE TWO
Queen’s Gambit | Captain America and Snow White: Queen’s Gambit | Graphic Novel
Original plotline. Leila, under Fury’s orders, tries to recruit Steve to join SHIELD as a STRIKE agent, and it leads to her and Steve solving a mysterious series of bombings together.
SPINOFF: Untitled AoS Replacement | Agents of SHIELD | TV Miniseries
Basically takes the place of AoS as a post-Avengers show about Coulson’s SHIELD team, but with a whole different (but equally diverse) cast. Runs until it ties in with Operation: Glass Coffin.
Castle Walls | Captain America and Snow White: Castle Walls | Graphic Novel
Original plotline. Carries on from Queen’s Gambit as Steve, now a SHIELD agent, and Leila try to solve the loose threads from the QG case.
*The Amazing Spider-Man | Movie
Sparks Fly | Captain America and Snow White: The Forest Through the Trees | Graphic Novel
Original plotline. Fury has allowed Leila to handle Gifted cases between STRIKE missions. Together with Steve, she embarks on a simple extraction mission that ends up uncovering a sinister conspiracy in a small town, the two of them growing closer in the process.
Royal Flush | Captain America and Snow White: Royal Flush | Graphic Novel
Original Plotline. SHIELD has tracked down the missing copy of their server from QG and CW, and it’s Leila’s job, with the help of Steve, and two new allies named Isabella Ferreira and Mena Desai, to go undercover to get it back. Unfortunately, this involves fake dating a nouveau riche silicon valley douchebag, which wouldn’t be so bad if there wasn’t someone she wanted to date for real. Maybe. Kind of. Probably not. But...
Codename: Snow White | Codename: Snow White | Movie
Original Plotline. Leila must face her past as old enemies try to draw attention to her biggest mistakes to undermine her status as an Avenger, in full view of her new allies and friends.
The Reckless and the Brave | Iron Man 3 (Canon) | Movie
Untitled Thor: TTD Fic | Thor: The Dark World (Canon) | Movie
The Miller’s Daughter | Snow White: The Miller’s Daughter | Graphic Novel
Original Plotline. Steve doesn’t know about Leila as much as he thinks he does. It turns out, Leila can keep secrets other than her own.
Untitled TWS Prelude Fic | Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier Infinite Comic (Canon) | Comic
Untitled TWS Fic | Captain America: The Winter Soldier | Movie
SIEGE Team Alpha | Snow White: Agent of SWORD | Graphic Novel
Original Plotline. While Steve, Sam and Natasha choose to stay behind, Leila takes Fury up on his offer to go to Europe, searching for answers about her healing factor. However, with a kree serum running through her veins, she rapidly begins to lose her grip on her life.
SPINOFF: Midwinter | Midwinter | TV series OR comic series (I haven’t decided)
Original plotline. After breaking free of Hydra, Bucky gives himself one more mission: save the girl he once condemned to his own fate. After jailbreaking Anya Maximoff, the two of them embark on a mission to explore their pasts and their futures, blowing up a few Hydra bases along the way. Bucky/OC.
SPINOFF: Out of the Woods | Black Widow: Out of the Woods | Movie
Original plotline. After the fall of SHIELD, Natasha discovered what she’d intentionally buried even from herself: her younger sister, Alexandra. Angry at a world that should have protected her but didn’t, Alex chooses to disappear after TWS, leading Alex to go after her...with some help. Brucenat pre-relationship, OC/OC.
SPINOFF: Untitled GotG Fic | Guardians of the Galaxy | Movie
Original plotline. Banished dragon princess meets Stark-worshipping Nova Corps officer. What could possibly go wrong? OC/OC.
*The Amazing Spider-Man 2 | Movie
Operation: Glass Coffin | Operation: Glass Coffin | TV Miniseries
Original plotline. A very unstable Leila finally finds what she’s been looking for for her entire adult life: a way to erase her own memories. Only, it turns out, once her memories are gone, something else takes their place…
Untitled OGC/AoU interim fic | Untitled | Comic Series OR Graphic Novel
Original plotlines, or perhaps a series of plotlines. Steve and Leila grow closer as Leila helps with the search for Bucky, and Steve helps her recover from her ordeal from O:GC.
Untitled AoU Fic | Avengers: Age of Ultron | Movie
*Ant-Man | Movie
-
PHASE 3
Domestic Politics | Show White and Captain America: Domestic Politics | Graphic Novel Series
Original plotline, or series of plotlines. Leila and Steve, the two worst equipped people to be in an adult relationship, figure it out together.
SPINOFF: Untitled Defenders Fic | Daredevil | TV Series
The one where Leila’s former lackey goes head to head with Matt Murdock in more ways than one. Also, Matt has a sister, because I have a brand to maintain. OC/Matt/OC OR Matt/OC, Frank/OC, also Foggy/OC.
Under Siege | Snow White: Under Siege | Movie
Original plotline. When the Sokovia Accords threaten to rip the Avengers apart, Leila sees one solution: legitimize SWORD as an intelligence agency by stopping a war between two small but significant European countries. Easier said than done when two fugitive ex-Hydra assets get involved.
*Doctor Strange | Movie
Everything is the same except the Ancient One is played by Dichen Lachman.
SPINOFF: Untitled GotG2 Fic | Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 | Movie
SPINOFF: Untitled Alex Fic | Untitled | TV Series OR Graphic Novel Series OR Comic Series
In the aftermath of the Under Siege debacle, Alex is one of the Avengers who is able to escape going into hiding. Instead she has her own adventures, from assisting Tony Stark with missions to mentoring Peter Parker and his friends.
SPINOFF: Untitled Luna and Haven Fic | Untitled | TV Series OR Graphic Novel Series OR Comic Series
The one where Peter Parker falls in love with former villain Haven Hendrix, and Luna Li falls in love with current villain Harry Osborn.
Untitled Cap 3 Fic | Captain America: Insurgence | Movie
Original Plotline. Serpent Squad maybe? Mostly character driven more than plot driven.
SPINOFF: Family Business | Black Widow: Family Business | Movie
Technically corresponds to Black Widow (2020). Since in the MMCU it’s the second BW movie, it would have a subtitle.
SPINOFF: Dancing With Our Hands Tied | Thor: Ragnarok | Movie/Graphic Novel
A large part of this fic takes place in the six week gap between Loki and Thor’s arrivals on Sakaar. (In canon, it was three weeks; here, it’s six.) As a result, Alex would be present in the movie, and what happened between her and Loki would mostly be told through implications in the movie, until the graphic novel came out and explored those six weeks more thoroughly.
*Black Panther | Movie
*Ant-Man and the Wasp | Movie
Untitled IW Fic | Avengers: Infinity War | Movie
Untitled IW/EG Interrim Fic(s) | Untitled | Comics
A lot can happen in five years.
Untitled EG Fic | Avengers: Endgame | Movie
Daylight | Snow White and Captain America: Daylight | Comic
Just a oneshot or two covering Steve and Leila’s Happily Ever After.
Other Story Elements
There are other stories here that I’m not sure what to call or how to structure. I want to explore the Avengers Academy that eventually gets established after Endgame; the aftermath of Endgame for Loki and Alex; Bucky and Anya’s eventual own HEA; Jace Barton’s character arc and romance with Pietro Maximoff; and a few other post-EG plotlines. I’ll keep reworking this outline as needed. In other words, this is very much a work in progress, but it’s what I have right now. The main Leila/Steve storyline is largely in tact, it’s just other characters that I’m still ironing out.

The Best and Worst Things About the Harely Quinn Cartoon
Best: the Voice Cast is Fucking Beautiful You can scan from the front, to Lake Bell as the endlessly sardonic Poison Ivy, to Alan Tudyk's effortless diversity as maybe 7 characters, at least two mains, to James Adomian being the shittiest and yet most popular version of Bane, to Ron Funches as a sweet and avuncular King Shark, it's a diverse and wonderful assortment of nerds who want to be here, and who want this world as fleshed out as it can be.
Worst: The Gore Is Gratuity There is blood when someone punches anyone else. There is blood when someone sneezes on someone else. Every punch shatters a jaw, or breaks an elbow, or makes a guy scream until he's ripped in half. I get that someone and many someones wanted to make a rated R DC cartoon, but did you not get your sweaty jollies out in the hideously bad Suicide Squad DVD movie? Or anything else? It's hateful. It's often unneccessary. But it does illustrate how hard Harley hits with a bat from time to time. It gets better when the Parademons show up, because their blood is a glowing yellow, and that's less upsetting.
Best: It Calls Out the Stupid Gatekeeping Nerds In One Episode It's so on the nose, but holy shit, way to just say "these assholes who call our two main characters Mary Sues are completely unpleasable shitfaces, and they won't ever be happy, and fuck them." It's gorgeous in how direct it is. The episode also features both of Batman's knees getting shattered, which is kinda awesome.
Worst: The Episode That Tries To Parody "Under the Sea" by Implying Subaquatic Living Is Better Because You Can Poop In the Ocean I don't care what anyone actually thinks, or how much the song is meant to be funny; it fucking fails. It's a terrible song. You ambled and wasted a guy as lovely and as talented as Phil LaMarr through this literal shit, for a song and a point that has no bearing on the rest of the episode. As a fan of non-sequiturs, you wasted yours, and it fucking sucks.
Best: the Very First Scene, Where a Bunch of Millionaires Get Killed As much as I hate bloody violence, this made me happy. Mostly because it immediately established the dynamic between Harley and the Joker, and because a bunch of arrogant millionaires get set on fire and get their knees shattered.
Worst: When Harley Decides on a Second Date with Joker It's a brilliant moment of character establishment, but it's also my least favorite trope in fiction; "wait, you don't understand, I was there for a different reason, let me explain!" It's every plot of Frasier. It's not good enough for this show.
Best: Harley Absolutely Fucking Up the Penguin's Shit It kinda happened once in season 1, and even though I just said I hate bloody violence, it absolutely happens again in season 2, and it's massive and satisfying.
Worst: Two-Face Never Actually Flips His Coin It's literally all he has to his name. He's amazingly voiced by Andy Daly, but his entire world is defined by that scarred silver dollar in literally every other iteration of his character. And it never sees a conclusion. Just once scene.
Best: Eris Created Capitalism on Themyscria How was this a bad thing? You know what, I'm only mad because Jameela Jamil got thrown off a balcony and I don't know if she lived. She's a goddess, but we never see her again. I wanna know!
Worst: Kite Man He's an absolute bum. Like, worse than your college roommate who has a really important fish tank. Everyone defends this dildo because Ivy cheats on him. But think about what he did while in that relationship. He never once considered her feelings as they were assaulted by traps. He tried proposing as they were about to DIE, because he was worried he wouldn't get another chance. It's all he could think about, and that's incredibly selfish. When she "died" all he could say was "my fiance" which is SOURPATCH SHIT. He's a void of personality, but because he's a "nice guy," too many people defend him. But I guess without him, we wouldn't have so many plot points of season 2. But seriously, fuck this geek.
Best: Michael Ironside is Darkseid Again! Oh my god! He's somehow so menacing and so funny. He has maybe 11 lines, but they're all somehow his hateful grumble, and when they give him something funny, it's massive and beautiful. And because it's this man, being a godhead, I laugh every time. He's an amazing man. Worst: Queen of Fables, Full Stop In a show full of "edgy" characters, she's TOO MUCH. Wanda Sykes has one mode and it's "I'MMA GET MY FUCK ON" and FLLLPPPPPRppphhhh

the problem with Tall Girl
this turned into more than an essay than I was expecting so get comfy:
Look, I get it, I know I’m a short bitch so I don’t know what it’s like to be tall etc. etc. and I’m sure there are a lot of tall girls who do / have felt insecure about their height, and maybe there are even girls who’ve faced problems similar to those in the movie. But this movie... I had so many problems with it, from the plot to the cast to the writing.
First off, the premise: a movie about a tall girl who gets picked on and harassed for her height trying to find love. On the surface, doesn’t seem too bad. And I’m not gonna deny that the main characters life isn’t harder because she’s tall than it would’ve been if she was short. But here’s the thing: tall women aren’t insulted considered less attractive for being outside what’s considered normal (if it was about that, tall guys would face the same thing) - it’s specifically about not being considered feminine enough, or rather conforming to the standard that women are supposed to be smaller and more petite than men. Jodi, however is played by a blond, cis, white girl who conforms to typical female beauty standards in pretty much every way other than being taller than average. And I’m not saying that her height or any problems she may faces because of it are invalidated by those things, but in the movie it’s like all of the rest of those things are invalidated on account of her height. WOC (especially black women) are far far far more likely to face adversity for not looking “feminine” enough and for years have been insulted and degraded for looking “masculine” - being too hairy or too tall or too large or our features not fitting eurocentric female beauty standards. The same point stands for trans women and even more so for trans woc. So while I’m not saying the kind of situation in the movie could never ever happen in real life, the fact that they’re making a movie about overcoming adversity faced due to not conforming to female beauty standards and making a thin, cis, white girl out to be the one facing the most adversity with the woc in the story either bullying the protag for not conforming to those standards or being the best friend who defends and supports the protagonist is pretty tone deaf. This isn’t just a normal movie situation where I think that it would’ve been nice for it to be more diverse or have a main character of colour - the premise would make much so much more sense with, for example, a tall black girl or trans girl at the lead because they’re so much more likely to face the problems faced by the main character in this movie.
Those were all thoughts I had even before the movie even came out, just from watching the trailer and reading the description. I tried to go into the movie with an open mind, thinking it would maybe exceed my expectations and I was being too harsh based on two minute trailer. However, almost straight off the bat the movie really tested my good intentions. Less than 5 minutes into the movie, Jodi is narrating how hard her childhood. And I could sympathise with her - children can be cruel and it can be tough to stick out like that in such an obvious way. I don’t doubt her childhood was harder on account of her height. But any goodwill is immediately destroyed by Jodi asking the audience “You think your life is hard?” and challenging them to “beat” her struggle. Because yes, while I’ll admit being tall has probably made her life harder up until this point, she’s still a straight, cis, rich white girl! Her height doesn’t make it harder for her to get a job or make her more likely to lose her job or to be the victim of a hate crime or be murdered by the police. And yet she still thinks her life is harder than anyone else in the school - where her main problem is apparently being asked “How’s the weather up there?” constantly. Jodi’s friend Fareeda even completely goes off at some random guy for saying it to her. Is it annoying to be asked that, constantly? Yes, probably. But the movie treats it as if it’s literally a slur. The movie constantly goes on about the “adversity” Jodi faces, but other than being picked on by one other girl (who is an asshole to Jodi and only Jodi for seemingly no reason whatsoever other than that she’s a Mean Girl) the “How’s the weather up there?” comments are literally the only “adversity” she ever faces over the course of the movie. Apart from said mean girl, there’s no one else making mean comments or laughing at her behind her back - she’s largely ignored by her peers. By teen movie standards, she’s not even receiving the typical treatment faced by the unpopular and bullied protagonists - no one’s spreading rumours about her or trying to ruin her life or throwing slushies at her or really harassing her in any way. But the movie still tries to push the narrative of Jodi facing so much adversity. There’s a part in the movie where Jodi’s mom tells her she has to stand strong in the face of adversity, and starts talking about all the problems she faced in high school for being so beautiful and popular - for example that she once had 10 guys ask her to a dance. Jodi looks completely incredulous that her mom considers this adversity and emphatically responds “No, it doesn’t.” when she’s asked if it is. The screenwriter somehow fails to see the irony in the fact that Josie herself is shown interest in by three different guys over the course of the movie (yet still continues to lament throughout the movie that “tall girls don’t get happy endings” and that all people see is her height and not her or something along those lines). This scene is so lacking in self awareness about the movie it’s in that it’s almost a metaphor for me watching the movie - me as Jodi, watching the movie and thinking “She really thinks THIS is adversity?” Another thing the movie seems to fail to consider is that Jodi’s problems are very much limited to high school. Yes, some people are assholes to her and she feels insecure but that’s definitely not a unique experience in high school. And once she actually moves into adulthood and the real world, she’s not really gonna face the same issues. As I said earlier, her height is not going to make it harder for her to get a job or make her more likely to lose her job or to be the victim of a hate crime or be murdered by the police, whereas these are issues that POC and LGBT people may have to deal with for the rest of their lives. The only way that being tall is going to significantly affect the rest of her life is in dating & finding a romantic partner, but even within the movie her height clearly doesn’t hold her back that much because 3 GUYS pursue her over the course of the movie.
While I do think the premise was bland anyway, the movie could’ve been somewhat enjoyable if they stopped trying to convince us and shoving down our throats that Jodi’s life is harder than everyone else’s and actually made the issue to be Jodi’s own insecurities and shown her overcoming those, instead - and maybe they would’ve had more time to actually focus on developing the relationship between the eventual endgame couple.
I was really hoping at some point there would be a scene where Jodi is being self-pitying and Fareeda (or hell, even Kimmy) were to sit her down and say “Look, I know you have problems, I know some people have been assholes to you because you were an easy target to make fun of for being different but you’re still a rich abled conventionally attractive cis white girl. I’m not saying your life hasn’t been more difficult because of your height, but it doesn’t make your life more difficult than everyone else’s,” and then maybe made a point about the adversity they face as WOC. I was so expecting Fareeda to do something like this in the bathroom scene but all she does is try to be Jodi’s emotional support which Jodi is ungrateful for. Which brings us up to the last point of how badly the characters of colour are treated in this movie. Fareeda is literally a walking “angry black girl”+”sassy supportive black friend” stereotype. Her only purposes in the plot are to go off at people when Jodi’s being “harassed”, support and uplift Jodi constantly even though she’s completely ungrateful, and be her friends’ dumping ground for their emotional problems. We literally know nothing about her other than this. She only exists to support the white characters. Kimmy, once again, is a one dimensional stereotype. She’s basically a caricature of a movie Mean Girl, with absolutely no reason given to why she’s such an asshole to Jodi. She’s not shown being a dick to anyone else, she’s not shown to be the queen bee of the school trying to consolidate her power, she’s just a pretty girl who apparently only has two interests - hating Kimmy for literally no reason, and being crowned homecoming queen. Her only purpose in the plot is as a device to prevent Stig from being with Kimmy. In fact, that’s the only purpose of the remaining two characters of colour as well - as romantic obstructions to create drama in the central white love triangle. There’s literally a scene where each white character (Stig, Jodi, Jack) is kissing their respective love interest (who each happen to be POC) but are distracted by / looking at each other instead of their love interests. They have no character or development or anything beyond being eventually rejected love interests to the white people. The only thing we know about Liz is that she’s gluten free, but the only reason for that is for her to have something in common with Jack. The school they go to looks very diverse - a lot of the extras & background characters are POC which imo just makes the movie worse because they’re making Jodi out to be the poor girl who’s life is harder than everybody else’s while all the people making fun of her & making her life difficult are POC. Literally all the people in the movie who ask her how the weather is up there are black. Most of the girls laughing at her while Kimmy makes fun of her are WOC. It was like they wanted the movie to look diverse for woke points but didn’t actually bother to have any of the characters of colour be developed or have any complexity or actually be relevant to the plot other than to obstruct the white romances and help the white people realise what they really want. They literally only existed as plot devices, not as people. And yes, Stig’s only purpose was to have Jodi realise her worth and that Jack was the right person for her but his character has some kind of emotional depth and character arc. He’s given a motivation and reason behind his actions - he likes being the popular kid and he lets it get to his head. Nothing of the kind is afforded to Kimmy or Schnipper.
I think the worst thing about this movie is how inoffensive it seems on the surface. It’s racially diverse, it’s about a girl overcoming her insecurities and learning to lover herself, what could be the problem? Which is why I don’t necessarily blame people for missing how shitty it actually is beneath the surface. But what I definitely don’t appreciate is (white) people insisting that the people who are rightfully pointing out this movie’s flaws are just being mean or bitter or being “discriminative” for “hating on the movie just because the main character is white” when that’s just so far from the actual point. I think the moral of the story is that it’s not enough to just think critically about the media you’re consuming, sometimes people need to actually listen to marginalised people when we’re telling them that something is not okay and not just insists that we’re being mean for no reason and then maybe we can avoid more movies like this in the future.

Beyond this Existence, chapter 16
Summary: After Xehanort's death, Demyx finds himself unexpectedly human in Radiant Garden. With nothing but fragments of his past and a cryptic statement from Xemnas, he's left to figure out who he is. When Ienzo asks for his help with a project, the two find common ground, but the trauma and secrets in both of their pasts could tear it apart. Zemyx (Demyx/Ienzo), post-KH3 canon compliant

--I hope you do not mind that I am recording this. I assure you any we can redact any exceedingly personal information. This is for my edification only. I would never dream of letting it fall into unsavory hands.
--Uh. Sure.
--Can you state your name and age in its entirety?
--Yeah. I’m [birth name and surname REDACTED]. I still go by Demyx. I’m twenty-two.
--That’s your name? That’s not what I thought.
--Yeah, well. It seems like I’m full of surprises. I don’t care who knows it, but it doesn’t seem to fit right anymore. You know?
--I suppose. So. Can you tell me what you remember, as far back as you can, as comfortably as you can?
--I’ll try.
----
These memories don’t feel like mine.
It’s weird. I guess it’s more like I’m reading a book, or watching a movie.
“It” started, if by it you mean all this Keyblade crap, when I was five. I was my parents’ only kid. We were broke. Like, squatting and going to soup kitchens broke. There were the early days, when the Foretellers--the five chosen ones or whatever--were just building their unions and preaching about their ideas in the plaza. I’m honestly not sure if they were the first wielders, but they were definitely the ones that made it a thing, That promised this as the way to seek the light.
Heartless started coming--from the future, or so they said in the square. We needed a way to defend ourselves. So they started testing people for worthiness. Kids were always easier. Less corrupt. More full of light.
More manipulable.
They said they would take the kids from more troubled circumstances, and give them what they needed to survive. In my parents’ eyes, food and a place to live. The luckier ones could stay at home. So that caused a big influx of poor people sending their kids in to be tested and trained. While some of the better off ones saw it as a sign of honor, everyone else wanted to keep their kids safe. Even the ones with Keyblades were dying.
My parents figured Heartless were better than me starving to death. So they sent me, by myself, for the test.
The older ones could pick their unions, but the real little ones like me they chose a more “organic” approach. They take you inside, and there the Foretellers are with a little table of five toys. Apparently picking one shows some intrinsic quality they’re looking for, or whatever. I got chosen to be in Ursus. And just like that, my mom and dad hugged me goodbye and left me there.
It was hard. Physically, mentally. I missed my parents. The training was grueling, and it hurt. But whenever I would cry or get upset either Master Aced or one of the older kids would tell me to be quiet. Because I was lucky. And I had a chance to be something.
But you see, Even, it doesn’t matter how lucky I was. I was still getting razzed by Heartless, getting thrown in and out of time to these worlds, getting reprimanded for bunging off quests or not getting enough lux. I got kicked out of a few parties for that. Making friends wasn’t so easy when I got a reputation for being a crybaby and a coward, even though I was six or seven.
I still tried to see my parents when I got a chance. They moved around a lot. Dad tried to get steady work a few times, but I think he had some kind of mental illness or something, and he could never be on time, or do what he was told, or get out of bed, so they lost their apartments a lot. Mom was a street musician, and she took in students sometimes, but it wasn’t enough money.
She taught me, too.
Compared to Keyblade stuff, music was so easy. I was so good at it. Knowing I wasn’t terrible at everything gave me strength to go on. I had a way to take all the bad feelings, all the nightmares, and make something beautiful out of it.
I tried to quit the union.
You wouldn’t believe the telling off Master Aced gave me. “Why was I ashamed of my heritage”. “Why wasn’t I doing my part.” “What did I think I would become otherwise, I came from the gutter.” It was devastating. Without the Keyblade, they said, I was worthless. I didn’t want to believe that was true.
As the years passed, and this all kept happening, I tried to study music on the side. That’s when I started keeping the diary. I wrote these weird avant-garde compositions, but that wasn’t enough to salve the pain. So I wrote how I felt, and if anybody found it, I’d just say it was nonsense. But nobody did, though. During that time the tensions between the unions started to grow, mostly over who was getting the most light. Kids were fighting in the streets. Killing each other’s Chirithys--that’s how I lost mine. Even the most legendary parties fell apart. People were still dying.
One of these days, when I was almost seventeen, I was going back to the dorms after another quest. Master Ava--Vulpes’s leader--stopped me. She said she’d heard about me, and I braced myself for another lecture like the ones Aced liked to give. But it was my focus on the bigger picture of my life she liked, she said. She wanted me to join a special union she was building.
The Dandelions.
The reason she built this union was because she feared there would soon be war between the others, and that war would escalate to apocalyptic proportions. Remember, we’d all been training for years at that point, we all had way overpowered magic--even me. But because we had no foresight as to anything other than collecting lux, nobody could see the consequences of fighting.
She was going to take this special union, and she was going to teach us how to escape this world altogether, just to make sure somebody survived.
I know you’re probably dying to know how we did it, but I honestly can’t remember. It was some kind of spell, for sure. I know that each of us cast it, and we were all supposed to go together. But it’s one of those things too slippery and powerful to hold onto for long. Not to mention, this travel was supposed to wipe our memories of the trauma and give us a fresh start. So she said.
The war started earlier than expected. The only reason I went to the battle was to find the other Dandelions so we could leave. But I’m not sure if I missed a memo or something. They were gone. Then again, there were so many bodies that had been just so completely fucking destroyed that they could have been some of these people.
…
…
…
[Audio muffled or indiscernible; external knowledge of social cues suggests emotional distress.]
People were just fucking killing each other. They… they tried to kill me, too. I remember Keyblades hitting my armor and I panicked. And I guess instinctively I cast the spell and got out. Got somewhere, or I guess some when is the better word. I ended up in the same place, just later, surrounded by all these rusting Keyblades, my memories completely cleaved and running through my fingers like sand. I remember that, feeling it all drain away like a dream.
That’s when Xemnas found me. When things started to hurt. The shock and the armor made it hard to tell, but someone had stabbed me clean through the chest.
He was nice to me, too. He said he’d been waiting for me and that I was going to be okay. He could give me purpose. My wounds would heal.
I died, and Demyx was born. Memory-free.
You know the rest.
End recording, duration--25:17.
----
“Goodness gracious. ” Like a child listening to their favorite story, he’d been leaning forward attentively. He’d even started recording it on his gummiphone, which Demyx initially felt was a violation of his privacy. But considering how close-lipped Vexen had always been about his experiments, he knew, if anything, his words would be safe in Even’s hands. “This is a window into our history.”
“Yours, maybe.”
“You simply must tell me more about these Foretellers. How is this organization structured? What was their training regimen like? Who was their leader--did they have a leader?”
“It's a lot to talk about." His throat was dry from talking for so long.
Even exhaled. He paused the recording. “I suppose you’re right. Of course you must be very tired. It’s been a long day.”
“Yeah. Yeah, I would say so.”
A beat of silence.
“Thank you for sharing this with me,” Even said. “I realize… it is not easy. Especially given our past relationship.”
“Like you said. Forgiveness.”
He nodded once, curtly. “Would you like something to help you sleep?”
“I think I’ll be okay. But thanks.”
“Well. Don’t get too used to it.”
Demyx looked at him. He didn’t know how else to be kind, Demyx realized. It must take immense effort. “Wake me up if anything changes with Ienzo,” he said. “Please.”
“You can be sure of it.”
----
The next several days, he felt utterly hollow. Demyx slept a lot. This was a sort of mental exhaustion. He was afraid to stray too far away from Ienzo’s side, but his condition remained unchanged. Guilt clung to him. He wasn’t really sure what to do with himself. He cleaned his room, which took all of ten minutes considering his lack of possessions. Did laundry. Found a couple books to read which weren’t half bad. It was a toxic combination of boredom and stagnation. At the end of the first week of this, Dilan asked him to come play cards.
“I figure you could use a bit of a diversion,” he said. He offered a smile.
“I guess I’m being pretty pathetic, huh,” Demyx said. He forced a laugh.
“Given the circumstances? No. But wallowing must be horrifically boring.”
Dilan’s quarters were even smaller than Even’s. He and Aeleus shared a sitting room and kitchenette. A faint smell of garlic lingered in the room, along with something like eucalyptus. He had a small herb garden, each one meticulously cared for. Near this was a pile of puzzle boxes.
Dilan took out a pack of cards. Demyx sat gingerly on the couch. It was less stern than the other furniture, a bit more comfortable, a soft velor that felt good to touch. He was becoming increasingly reliant on the tactile to stay grounded. He didn’t know if this was one of his myriad issues, or an effect of being overwhelmed.
Dilan crossed to a small glass cabinet. “Would you like a drink?”
“God. Yes.”
He poured them each a few fingers of whiskey into small crystal glasses. It burned when Demyx sipped it, but he liked it. “What shall we play? It’s a shame we’ve no third. I’d rather have liked to play Blackjack.”
“It’s not like I have anything to bet.”
“Too, too true.”
They settled on Hearts. Demyx didn’t know what to say to Dilan. After winning the first game, Dilan got them another drink.
“I’m not sure how I feel about your newfound reticence,” Dilan said. “It’s so odd, to see how humanity has changed you youth.”
“How so?”
“You were hardly ever so reserved. Ienzo was never so friendly. You should have heard him, chattering away to Sora. ...I’m sorry.”
“It doesn’t bother me. To hear his name. Either of them, I mean.” He felt only a shadow of the ping of anxiety he got when thinking about Sora. Of course, knowing what he knew now, it made sense that Sora’d had to strike him down. Psychically, there were bigger fish to fry.
“You’ve got a focus to you. An intensity. It’s like you’re more present.”
“I don’t feel very present.”
“Well. We’ve all received some shocks recently.”
The alcohol was making him warm and a little dizzy. Demyx wasn’t sure whether or not he liked the sensation. He slipped off his shoes and pulled his feet up under him. “Why did you become an apprentice?”
Dilan thought for a moment, shuffled his cards, and then drank down the remainder of his whiskey in one swallow. “Why indeed,” he muttered. “I was only a boy at the time, a bit younger than yourself. I needed something to do with my life. I’d always liked creating things. Building things. Ansem had passed some initiatives to make Radiant Garden a haven for the sciences. I applied to study engineering under him, and was accepted.”
“Just like that?”
“Just like that.” He chuckled. “Why did you choose to become a Keyblade wielder?”
“I didn’t,” Demyx said. “It chose me. I was poor. Being a wielder was pretty much the only way to survive.”
“I abhor such economies,” Dilan said sourly. “I cannot understand how some leaders will let their charges suffer for basic human rights.”
“I can’t really have a realized perspective of it. I was still a kid when I left.”
“What will you do now?”
“What will I… do?” Demyx repeated numbly. “Frankly, I didn’t think I’d get this far.”
“You and I both.”
He continued to pet the velor. He was feeling dizzier still, and heavy. “I want to be with Ienzo,” he said. “And I want to make friends. Real ones. But I don’t know where I’d fit.”
“What’s that old adage? “Be yourself?””
“Hasn’t exactly worked in the past.”
“It is a theory of mine that becoming a Nobody worsens one’s flaws and insecurities.” Dilan poured them another drink. “Our personalities devolved and repelled. Fed by darkness. Take your time. Be honest. That’s all.”
Demyx picked up the crystal cup and swirled the amber liquid around a little. “I guess.”
“What about that guitar of yours?”
“Sitar?”
“Yes. That.”
“I don’t know,” he said. “But I’ll find out.”
---
The next day, it sleeted. The echo of the splotches of snow piling up outside was audible within the confines of the castle. Demyx went to the library, armed with a cup of coffee. He lit a fire in the hearth. Once it was large enough to tend to itself, he sat down cross legged in front of it.
For some reason he was nervous. This was akin to stage fright. He’d much rather be worthy of Arpeggio than the stupid Keyblade.
Demyx held out his hands and pulled from within. The Keyblade appeared. He sighed. “I don’t want you,” he muttered. Let it disappear. He remembered the way the sitar had felt, the perfect weight of it, the smooth varnished wood.
Keyblade again. Demyx had to resist the urge to just toss the damn thing. He stared down at it. Traced the smooth shaft, twisted the links of the chain.
“Please,” he said to it. “I don’t want to fight. I just want--”
Not to be an idiot talking to an inanimate object?
Vanishing. Reappearing. It didn’t matter how long he thought about his Nobody memories, of all the music he’d ever made with Arpeggio. Of the fights or occasionally lack thereof.
“Are you mad at me?” Demyx asked out loud. “I didn’t ask for this to all happen.”
Hadn’t he?
Oh, we do too have hearts. Don’t be mad.
“Shut up,” he hissed at himself.
The fire popped as a log settled, startling him.
“Is it because I’m not him anymore?” he continued. “I’m still the sa-- no. I’m not.”
Demyx lay back on the plush carpet.
Remembering death was not easy. Doubly hard now that he knew it wasn’t the first time he’d been slain with Keyblades. Some of them were sharp, most blunt. You’d crush your ribs before you drew blood. Which was what happened. He rested his palm on the spot were the scars were.
Sora, Donald, Goofy. So much rage. Realization that this was a murder-suicide. He was able to pin Sora twice before the pain was too much. Before fading. Before waking up. Before Braig, with a soft smile, and a boy with silver hair, and a hot stab to the chest. What would have happened, really, if he hadn’t been turned into a vessel? What would he have done? Run away? Spent his life friendless, unloved and alone?
Without Ienzo?
He needed connections. Without them he could never hope to be whole--at least, figuratively. He had to do better. To be better. But how? Fancy displays of heroism were functionally worthless if there was no real intent behind them.
Demyx stood. Despite it all, he sort of had an idea.
----
The winter coat he had was warm enough, but it was not quite waterproof, and by the time he’d waded through the slop he was damp and chilly. When he reached the door of the committee’s headquarters, though, a knot of anxiety overrode his physical discomfort. Demyx stood for several moments at the door as wet snow piled on his hat, unsure of what to say. Several times he reached up to knock and withdrew his hand. He had barely placed his palm on the doorknob before it opened of its own accord.
“‘Could’ve finished War and Peace in the time it took you to make up your mind,” a middle-aged blond man said gruffly. “Come on in, kid.” He was smoking a cigarette, and its smell mixed with the ambient woodsmoke. “Don’t think we’ve formally met. I’m Cid.” He offered his hand. “Saw you unconscious, but I don’t think you remember that.”
“Not--exactly--” Demyx shook his hand.
“Let me take your jacket before you get snow everywhere.” He took the wet garments and hung them on a coat rack.
“It’s warm in here,” Demyx said, half in wonder. He was so used to the drafty castle that he’d forgotten what adequate heating felt like.
Cid raised an eyebrow. “‘Course it is.”
“It’s, um, the castle. Heating’s not very good.”
“I imagine it wouldn’t be.”
A beat passed. Demyx felt his anxiety rising and floundered for things to say.
“I’m guessing you’re here for Aerith?” Cid asked. He stubbed out the cigarette in an ashtray.
“Well. Sort of. I want to help.”
“With what,” he said blankly.
“Anything. I mean I--” Demyx could feel himself turning red.
“In the middle of winter?”
He bit his lip and looked down.
Cid chuckled. “I’m messing with you, kid. We’re always happy to have an extra pair of hands. Any of ya’ll got a sense of humor over there?”
“Let’s just say it’s been a tough week,” Demyx said.
“I’ll say. Weather’s been driving us mad. I finally kicked out Yuffie and Leon to get some peace and quiet.”
“...Er. Sorry about that.”
He shrugged. “I’m sure one or both of them will be back soon. They know a bit more about the operations stuff than I do. Why don’t you have a seat?”
Demyx perched in one of the folding chairs. Cid sat back down at a computer and began absently writing code. He wondered if he should say something. Anything. Ask questions. He kept his hands knotted in his lap.
A door he hadn’t noticed previously opened, and out came Aerith, drying her hands on a towel. “Demyx? What are you doing here? Is everything okay?”
“Fine--well, enough. I’m here to help.”
She crossed over a plant on the table and cut off a few of its leaves. “Can’t do a whole lot in the winter other than plan, unfortunately.”
“What are you doing with those?”
“Making medicine.” She nodded her head towards the other room. “Want to see?”
He followed her. It was a small, narrow room, with a cot up against one wall. The other wall was lined with cabinets and some counter space. A few different types of dried leaves and blooms were stuffed in the myriad little drawers. She took the leaves, scattered them into mortar. To Demyx, the mix looked like a salad more than a medicine. She crushed it down, whispered a spell, and then with an odd little device began packing it into capsules. “Pectin,” she explained. “Goes down easier than the raw leaves. And doesn’t get stuck in your throat.” She held up the tiny pill so he could see.
“What does it do?” Demyx asked.
“Cold cure,” she said simply. “We need lots of it this time of year. And colds always change. I’m forever tweaking it.”
A memory he hadn’t fully process washed in. He’d never been the best fighter in any of his parties, often left to provide background support. The spells then he’d used had been barbaric in comparison, but at least it kept people alive.
“When did you learn how to do all this stuff?” he asked. He was feeling odd.
“Oh, ever since I was a kid,” she said. “My mom and grandma before me were healers. They sorta taught me what I know now. And I’m also teaching myself.”
“Do you think it’s possible for someone else to learn?”
She crushed more herbs. “I’m sure it is. It’s magic like anything else.”
“What about--say--me?”
Aerith turned slightly. She appraised him.
“I’ve been wanting to help people and I don’t know how. You saved me. You saved Ienzo. I can’t do science, and I’m not a good fighter. But I have a good memory.” He considered the irony of that statement. But he’d always been good at memorizing.
“It’s a long road. This isn’t something you can do halfway. People’s lives could be at stake. But you know that.” She smiled a little. Tapped her forehead. “You’ve been through a lot in your life. Seen a lot of suffering.”
“Haven’t we all,” he said dryly.
“That’s… right.” She dusted off her hands. “It’s not that I don’t trust you, or believe you can do it. But you’ve gotta have a certain kind of tenacity. An ingenuity. Tell you what. Why don’t you read some base healing theory? There’s no way Ansem doesn’t have books about it. If that doesn’t send you running for the hills, we can talk.” She winked.
Demyx nodded. “Okay. Sounds good.”
“Good luck.”
He stood.
“Was that the answer you needed?” she asked.
“I think it was.”
----
A week or so passed. He tried to do what Aerith said, and study. But Demyx had never been the most studious, and almost everything he learned sans the very basics he’d learned in the field. He spent these minutes and hours alternating between the text and the dictionary. Why were academics such bad writers?
Sometimes he studied near Ienzo, sometimes he didn’t. Ienzo slept and slept and slept. Demyx could feel the utter lack of presence like a missing tooth. Honestly, being around him and not being able to talk to him was nearly painful.
During one of these marathon reading sessions, Even came in to check Ienzo’s vitals, as he did several times each day. “EKG activity is still fairly limited. But improving. He must be dreaming.”
“About what?” Demyx asked.
“I’ve no idea. ...What is that?” He reached town and felt at Demyx’s temperature. “Are you quite alright?”
Demyx sighed, marked his place in the book, and shut it. “I’m studying. Sue me.”
“But why?”
He drummed his fingers on the desk. “You’re just going to make fun of me.”
“I will… not,” Even said with great restraint.
Demyx raised an eyebrow.
“I must admit I am still getting used to the new you. Tell me. I will withhold judgement.”
“I’m thinking of learning to heal. Like. The magic.” He braced himself.
Even didn’t laugh. “Really? Why is that?”
“I want to help people. And this seems like something I can actually do.” He sighed. “I hate feeling helpless. If I can help someone not feel that way, it’d be nice. You know.”
“I admit I never put much stock in such magic initially. But seeing how that woman has cared for the two of you, I’m starting to change my mind.”
“Do you think I can do it?”
Even considered this. “You had a fairly potent magical ability in the Organization. I don’t see why not.”
“You don’t think I’m too stupid?”
He scowled. “I find it stupid that you hold my opinion in such high esteem.” Then, softening. “As you said. You’re not a scientist. But that really has little to do with practical intelligence.” He picked up the tome. “I’d be glad to help you, should you so want it. These aren’t exactly light reading. It’d be convenient to have another pair of hands.” He picked up another bag of saline. “Well. If you’re so interested, I might as well teach you how to do this much.” He showed Demyx how to change the IV and how to take base vitals. “I’m hoping we won’t need to do this for too much longer. But that’s all up to him.” Even patted Ienzo’s head.
“I miss him.” He felt tears in his eyes.
“As do I,” Even said softly. “Come. Are you hungry?”
---
The more Demyx studied, the more his memories became clearer. In those first shocked days, it had been hard to focus on any memory for very long. Now, not so much.
He’d been a healer then, but not a very good one. He’d still been a coward. More than once someone had gotten egregiously hurt because he hadn’t been willing to step up. He’d been kicked out of multiple parties that way.
He didn’t want to be a coward. It was time to be mature; a grown up. Deal with grown up things in a grown up way. Don’t run. Face it. The hurt will be over that much faster.
For the first time, he tried to summon the Keyblade because he wanted to. But that wasn’t what happened. Instead of cool metal, there was warm, varnished wood. Familiar. Well-worn. He held the sitar tenderly. Cried a bit out of relief.
He was still, despite it all, himself.

Top “Ten” Books 2017
So yesterday I completed my goodreads goal of reading 50 books during the year and I thought it would be a good idea for me to make a top “ten” books. Who knows? perhaps you’re thinking about picking one of these up but you are not so sure.
Oh and when I say “ten” what I mean is, some series or books by the same author will be put into the same slot… so they will clearly be more than “ten” books. You guys know I can never choose just one thing.
1. I’ll Give You The Sun - Jandy Nelson. #NoahAndJudeForever. Family is important but it’s more important that you find peace with the past.
2. The Sun Is Also A Star - Nicola Yoon. I invite you to believe there’s still good in the world, I invite you to believe in love, destiny and the universe. I am so grateful for this book, it reminded me of some parts of myself that I had lost during the past years, while also maintaining a good and critical commentary of today’s society.
3. Harry Potter - J.K.Rowling. This series proves, proves to everyone that “children books” does not mean that there is no depth or interesting political positions. J.K. Rowling, I am in awe of you! They are all exceptionally good and so entertaining (duh) but here is my current order:
Harry Potter and the Halfblood Prince: GIVE.ME.ALL.THE.DRAMA.
Harry Potter and the Deahtly Hallows: Payoffs, so. many. payoffs!
Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone: This is not a happy book, my boy Harry has been abused over and over, but his heart of gold pushes through.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: Sirius my sweet!
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Cedric Diggory is a victim of “wrong place wrong time”.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Sirius’s death is worse than in the movie! But also.. Luna Lovegood is the one true queen.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: THE WEASLEYS ARE EVERYTHING!
4. The Sarah J. Mass books: I loved them all and I will forever praise her writing and defend this books as more than “hot fae meets feisty heroine”.
Tower of Dawn: I was not a huge Chaol fan, but his arc overall the series is one of the most realistic out there, making him a coherent character and a very believable person. This book is basically what happens when you say “Chaol deserved better”, well let me tell you he got “better”! Making a great effort to include more representation the most natural way possible (as it should be) this book is as good, as its predecesor expanding the world and deepening the story. #NestaqMyLoves #YreneTowersIsLife.
A Court of Wings and Ruin: Feyre Darling, you are my number one girl. I loved this book and I thought it was really really good. It had it’s flaws (as do all books), and at certain points I wished for other outcomes. Nonetheless it works as an amazing bridge between old plotlines and new ones. I get the feeling that this book sets the ground for coming payoffs. Female at positions of power, NUANCED characters with bad moments as well as good ones, and a great political position (if you missed Rhy’s immigrant statement or Cassian’s rape analogy then I urge you to read it again). ACOWAR is more than people give it credit for and it’s a good political statement on many things… but it did screwed over Mor -although I feel this will payoff at the end and she will be very happy-.
Empire of Storms: I am still recovering.. (if you have nothing else to do and want to see the process of how my heart shattered then you can read my reaction thread here)
5. Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte. Here comes Jane redefining what badass means since the 19th century. This books has everything you need! I mean, it’s classic for a reason. But the language! The use of the language is so well executed that it reads like a novel that has 20 years tops. Bronte is a genius. How she managed to do that, I will never know. She had her way with words.
6. All The Light We Cannot See - Anthony Doerr. Being a book about WWII, I knew it was going to hurt, but oh what a thrilling ride this was! The structure of the narrative, the characters, the story: everything was on point!. #WorstPlotTwistOfTheYear
7. Leigh Bardugo: Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom. THESE BOOKS! I URGE YOU I URGE YOU TO READ THEM! This duology brings some of the best characters literature in general – not just Y.A has seen. I think this is a perfect example of good representation. The only thing missing was a Latino-Latina character, but I still feel this was a diverse cast and I could find myself in different traits of each character. I love this books more than words could express and I hope and wish that Leigh will continue to spend time in this world with them. I just want more of The Dregs.
8. A Darker Shade of Magic - V. E. Schwab. Now this is a world I am excited to be a part of! You know when you read a book and you feel that you’re scratching just the surface, the tip of the iceberg? well this was that book for me. As its own I’m sure this novel stands on it’s own and you could read it and leave it at that, but I you just know there is more and more. This is the perfect example of a literary synecdoche, in which a part represents to the whole, but it still a part. Meaning that it can be on it’s own or it can be a part of the bigger narrative. I am eagerly waiting for the second installment to arrive (to my house).
9. Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions- BY MY LOVE Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. “Your feminist premise should be: I matter. I matter equally. Not “if only.” Not “as long as.” I matter equally. Full stop.”. If you have trouble understanding feminism please read this, along with her “we should all be feminist TED talk”. If you like to know more about this ideology and how it applies to society nowadays then read it. Chimamanda is one of the greatest voices to explain what it is all about and how we can contribute towards an egalitarian society, Besides is like 100 pages long… so there’s no excuse.
10. Strange The Dreamer - Laini Taylor. Basically it’s Atlantis more developed. I loved Lazlo and I loved Sarai. This is a story unlike any other, in which words come to live and you feel the characters within you.
Honorary mentions:
11. Rupi Kaur: Milk and Honey and The Sun and Her Flowers. She articulated my thoughts and gave them life. More than considering it poetry, although some of her texts are beautiful poems, I think of them more of aphorisms or thoughts. It helps when you can see your pain voiced by other, it helps you realize things and then it helps you move forward.
12. Atonement - Ian McEwan. GOD BRIONY! I loved this book and I owe it a lot since my dissertation worked because of it. McEwan is great when exploring characters and in going against the common idea that children are nothing if not innocent. Every action has it’s consequence and we should always keep this in mind. #RobbieDeservedBetter #CeciliaTallisQueenOfMyHeart.

Where it ends, where it begins - a BH one-shot
Author’s note: This is my first Bughead fic, inspired by this prompt from @raptorlily. Thank you once again to the incomparable @jandjsalmon, whose input, support and friendship have been invaluable in the making of this fic, and to @theladylabyrinth, whose feedback and encouragement have helped me so much.
Summary: Closing night at the Drive-In. Jughead contemplates endings as he prepares to say goodbye to his beloved Twilight. Then Betty Cooper shows up at his door. [One-shot. Canon addition/Episode 4 coda.]
“It was then that Jughead knew, with a certainty that overshadowed everything else that was ambiguous and unsure in his own life, that one day, he would kiss Betty Cooper. Not tonight. Maybe not even tomorrow. But he made a quiet vow of it, promising himself that he would give himself the chance to write himself into her story.”
Fic under the cut, or read on my Ao3. I LOVE hearing from my readers, so please feel free to drop by my asks.
…
At midnight, finally, the last of the stragglers made their way out of the Twilight Drive-In, leaving tire tracks, unfinished popcorn and rubbish in their wake.
Well, there you have it, folks, Jughead narrated bitterly in his mind, the last tatters of this town as we know it.
As he opened the movie projector and lifted out the final reel of Rebel Without A Cause, he had to stop and gave a bitter, hollow chuckle at the irony of it all - screening a film about the failure of the American dream on the last night of the drive-in, which, as far as he was concerned, was Riverdale’s funeral. Sure, the shooting of Jason Blossom was the death-knell for the innocence of this “town with pep”, but this night - in all its unabashed celebration of nostalgia - was its true farewell.
A lot of people had turned out, which was nice. But disappointingly (and predictably), besides everyone ooh-ing and aah-ing over young James Dean, no-one had picked up or appreciated the film choice. Everyone was entertained, sure, but in between all the high school kids making out in their cars and the Southside Serpents hollering at the screen, it was just like any other crappy night at the drive-in.
Betty, he thought. Betty would’ve appreciated it. It was her pick, after all, and the memory of it still enthralled him, made him smile. At the diner, when she’d half-jokingly suggested it, he’d given her no more than a nod and a smile. On the inside, he was screaming.
He shook his head in an attempt to shrug off these thoughts, which were disturbingly becoming more prevalent in the past few weeks. He’d never really paid heed to Betty Cooper that way growing up, because everyone and their dog just assumed that Archie and Betty were destined for one another. It didn’t matter how many other girls Archie hooked up with along the way - these were all momentary diversions in their long march towards Cooper-Andrews endgame. Betty would wait, ever-steadfast, until Archie eventually came around to his senses. They would get married, have three beautiful children and live in a charming house bordered by white picket fences. A true Riverdale fairytale.
Except… Jughead always thought that Betty was better than that. That she deserved more than just to be the final, decisive footnote in Archie’s romantic chronicles. It’s true that they’d become more distant as they grew up, but he still counted her as one of his closest friends. Jughead had been around her his whole life, and knew her well enough to see that one day she’d transcend the depressingly small dreams Riverdale held for her. She was strong, whip-smart, fiery and compassionate. When she got that literary internship, he rejoiced for her. She deserved it. Sure, he listened and empathised with Archie in bemoaning the loss of their friend over the summer, but privately, he was thrilled that she was getting out of Riverdale, even for a little while. Because she needed to know that there was more beyond the borders of their little town, and that perhaps she deserved a little better than what she - and everyone else - expected for herself.
Jughead had known all this, yet still managed to keep a friendly, platonic distance throughout their teenage years. So he couldn’t fully explain this sudden, recent spark in his consciousness of her. Why he was suddenly more aware of his body and the way his face moved whenever she was around. Or why a throwaway movie suggestion over milkshakes echoed more deeply than it should have. Maybe it was her extended absence that summer. Maybe it was even Jason’s murder, which had cast a cold, gloomy pall over Riverdale that made him and so many others want to reach for the warmth and inherent goodness of someone like Betty Cooper. All he knew was that when he saw her for the first time again after summer and she turned around in that booth at Pop’s, he looked and saw things that he hadn’t seen before.
For instance, he saw that Betty Cooper had grown up.
He saw that she held herself with a new steadiness, a steely confidence that caught him off guard. And that her hair looked really pretty in its careful curl and neat ponytail, but that it would also be interesting to see what it looked like when it was out and loose (perhaps when she woke up in the morning?).
More importantly, he saw that her eyes - greener and more arresting than he remembered - took an unusual trajectory away from Archie as they walked into the diner. For as long as Jughead had known Betty, her gaze always rested on Archie by default, whether she was listening to him intently, willing him to look at her, or upbraiding him for something he had done. This time, her eyes looked past Archie and at him. It was a small change, but it startled him, alerting him to a shift in the atmosphere. In his mind, he saw a weathervane turning, signalling the changing wind.
He was not silly or naive enough to think that he completely fell for Betty Cooper that day at Pop’s. He wasn’t even sure that he was there yet, that he could define whatever he felt about her in certain, concrete terms. All he knew was that he was far more aware of her than he had ever been his entire life. And with Riverdale’s slow descent into darkness (and his family’s own descent into brokenness) raging in the background of his life, she was a pinpoint of light that he was in no hurry to look away from.
…
A knock on the door startled him.
He tensed. Anyone knocking on the door of the drive-in’s projector room past midnight was bad news. He glanced around wildly, looking for a weapon, anything heavy he could defend himself with.
“Jug? You there? It’s Betty.”
Shit. He almost wished for the hostile intruder. This was decidedly worse. What the hell is she doing here?
Jughead opened the door. He felt his chest tighten. It was ridiculous and wildly unfair that she stood there, right where the light hit her best. Her beauty made him ache. Then he noticed a faint smudge on her cheek, a slight twitch in her jaw. She’d been crying.
She smiled wanly and held up an empty rubbish bag. “I figured you needed help cleaning up.”
“Hey. Betts.” He stepped outside and quickly closed the door behind him, aware that if she caught a glimpse of his bed and belongings, she wouldn’t let up until he told her the truth about his living situation. “Is everything okay?”
She gave a shaky, nervous laugh. “Um, yeah. It’s been… an eventful night.” His eyes searched her, silently willing her to elaborate. “Is it okay if I take my time talking about it? I’m still a little shaken up.”
“Sure, of course.” He indicated the rubbish bag. “So… this is…?”
“An excuse.” He smiled at her honesty. “A distraction, really. After tonight, I just felt the need to come out and do something helpful. And to pay tribute, of course.” Her arm waved out vaguely towards the screen, now blank, white, empty of imagery.
He couldn’t help but scoff good-naturedly at that. “So, you decided to distract yourself by coming out and cleaning up the drive-in that’s closing down? Polish the brass on the Titanic?”
She laughed. “Really? You’re making a Tyler Durden reference?”
Jughead leaned against the doorframe and cocked an eyebrow at her. “The girl knows her Fight Club quotes, I’m impressed.”
“It’s only one of my favourite movies.”
He smiled and gave her a skeptical look. “Fight Club? Really?”
“Yeah, well, when it’s contraband in your household and you have to sneak it into your room to watch it on your laptop, you kind of develop an odd little affinity with it.” She shook the rubbish bag at him, a little more certain and purposeful. “Anyway, come on, the Titanic’s not polishing its own brass.”
Jughead laughed. “Alright then, but we’re going to need some snacks.”
…
Jughead raided the leftovers from the drive-in snack bar. The kid who was manning it was supposed to have cleared it out by the end of the night, but clearly he thought it would be pointless, given that the drive-in was closing. Jughead grabbed a bag of popcorn, some chocolate bars and a couple of trash pickers for him and Betty.
They agreed to start at one end of the drive-in and walk across together to try and cover the grounds. With all of its lights still on and the signage still buzzing above their heads, the drive-in looked hauntingly beautiful in its neon-lit emptiness.
Betty turned to Jughead as she ripped a Snickers open. “How did tonight go, Jug? I’m really sorry I couldn’t make it. My mom sort of hijacked my plans.”
“It’s okay,” he said. And it really was. Alice Cooper was a piece of work. “It was bittersweet, to be honest. The whole town was there - Serpents included, but you know, still, it was great.” He sighed. “I just wish it didn’t have to take the drive-in closing down to get everyone here.”
Betty glanced at him. “You know the town cares about the drive-in, Jug. We all had great memories here. I did - I watched my very first movie here. I’m pretty sure we all did.”
“What did you watch?” he asked out of curiosity.
“It was a rerun of the Zeffirelli Romeo and Juliet.”
Jughead laughed. “Wow, seriously?”
“Seriously.” She laughed at the memory. “I was 6, and… well, you know my mom. She had grand plans for me and my sister to become cultured. Polly was bored and ended up reading a book, but I actually ended up enjoying it.”
Jughead imagined it - six-year-old Betty Cooper, precocious and already smart beyond her years, her blonde head resting on her little hands as Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting declared their love for each other on the play’s infamous balcony. It was, he had to admit, adorable. “Little morbid for a six-year-old, don’t you think?”
“It definitely was, but I was more into the love story. The deaths and the gang warfare completely went over my head.”
“Are you kidding? That’s sort of the whole point of the story, Betts.”
“Was it really, though? The title of the play WAS Romeo and Juliet.”
“Yeah, but then it starts with this morbid prologue that basically spoils the love story for you. ‘Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona where we lay our scene…”
Betty smiled and joined him, their voices echoing the over the empty grounds of the Twilight. “From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean –”
“See?” Jughead broke off. “‘Civil blood makes civil hands unclean.’ It’s obvious, isn’t it? Shakespeare’s trying to tell us that that’s where the story’s at. The lovers are just a plot device to teach you the real lesson of the play, which is that senseless hatred is a vile force that can disrupt even the purest, most honest love.”
“Or,” Betty countered, “that even the briefest flicker of love, which lasted all of three days, can be enough to bury an ancient grudge. Remember, the Capulets and the Montagues actually made up in the end. And you didn’t even get to the good part of that prologue - ‘doth with their death bury their parents’ strife.’”
Jughead smiled. This was the kind of literary banter that he could only have with Betty. Archie was his best friend, but the last book they discussed was a Spiderman comic. “Alright, I can concede that point. But you’re an eternal optimist, Betty. I’m a cynic.”
“Cynics don’t fight tooth and nail to keep an old-fashioned drive-in open, Juggie,” she said. Juggie. Her childhood nickname for him. It made him unreasonably giddy. “Or write novels in tribute to their hometown. Face it, you’re a romantic soul.”
Jughead rolled his eyes. “It’s not romantic to mourn endings, Betty. It’s just… human.”
Betty’s face fell. Jughead immediately regretted his scornful tone. Which was odd. He never usually cared how people reacted to his rougher edges. But seeing Betty’s vulnerability at his doorstep earlier opened something fierce and protective in him. He bent his head to catch her eye. “I’m sorry. That was a bit sour.”
“Oh, no, don’t be. I mean, you’re absolutely right - spot on, in fact,” she said. She smiled at him. “And don’t apologise for your sourness. I think I can handle some trademark Jughead Jones sourness.” She playfully poked at his beanie.
Jughead froze internally. She wasn’t normally this casually tactile with him; that was reserved for Archie. Come to think of it, how the hell was Archie still walking around when he’d been touched, so often and so tenderly, by Betty Cooper? The spot on his head where she’d poked him felt electrified.
Betty continued. “But like I said, you’re right. I am an optimist, but there’s still something about tonight that makes me feel like… I should be grieving. Grieving what, I don’t know.” She sighed and sat down on the grass. “Maybe that’s why I’m here.”
Jughead sat down next to her. They passed a few moments in companionable silence before he turned to her. “What happened tonight, Betty?”
In detail, she told him about what had transpired in the Music Room at school with Miss Grundy (or Jennifer Gibson, rather), Archie, Mr. Andrews and her mom. She withheld nothing. He raised his eyebrows when she mentioned breaking into Grundy’s car, was incredulous when she told him about the gun and the ID (he was borderline spluttering when she mentioned that she’d taken the gun home - how could she be so reckless?). She went over the fiery exchange between her mom and the Andrews men, and her subsequent threat to publicly rescind her story on Grundy and paint her mother as the villain. By the time she got to the part where Grundy announced that she’d skip town, Jughead was floored. The girl had guts.
“That’s one hell of a night, Betts. I can’t believe you actually got Grundy to leave town.”
“I didn’t - that was her choice. Admittedly a choice made under duress from my mother, the ultimate bad cop.”
Jughead laughed at that. “Still. You pursued the lead, you found the evidence, and you prevented Archie from getting caught up in a sadder, more tragic version of The Graduate. That’s brilliant.”
“Thanks.” She smiled at him - a small, hesitant smile. “It was pretty good, I’ll admit.”
They both fell quiet. He sensed that her heart wasn’t in that self-congratulatory admission. He nudged her knee with his. “So what’s bugging you?”
“Ah. I don’t know, Jug.” She wrung her hands. “I know I did the right thing but… it doesn’t feel good, you know? It’s not something I want to celebrate.”
“Well, let’s analyse. Why did you actually do it? Why’d you go after Grundy?”
“I did it because… I guess, because I wanted to protect Archie. I thought Grundy had him under some sexual spell that prevented him from seeing reason. I thought that he was incapable of thinking for himself because he was blinded by her. But…” She paused and looked out over the Twilight, deep in thought. “What I saw at the Music Room wasn’t some child who couldn’t reason for himself. What I saw was our friend Archie who we’ve known our whole lives, fully aware, making his own decisions, seeing how stupid and dangerous and reckless they are, and continuing to make them anyway.”
Jughead was quiet. It was odd hearing any sort of Archie criticism from Betty. Sure, she’d tell him off for chewing with his mouth open, or not studying for a quiz, but there was never anything like this - a full critique of his character and the decisions he made.
“I didn’t know who that Archie was, Juggie. I felt so distant from him. I felt betrayed, but not by him. I felt betrayed by this illusion of him that I’ve held onto for so long. And it made me realize that maybe what I felt for him was an illusion, too.”
Jughead felt the air go still. As if Riverdale itself was holding its breath. As if the town couldn’t believe that the dream it had concocted of its two golden children was disintegrating .
Betty sighed. “And tonight, this whole Grundy thing, just felt like a sign. That maybe it’s time to let that illusion go.”
Jughead’s felt his chest tighten. His mind was a mess. He couldn’t process what he was hearing. It felt unreal, like it should’ve been playing on the blank screen in front of them rather than right here, in a conversation with a girl that he could not stop thinking about. She was saying words that he’d never imagined her saying, and in turn, he was feeling things that he’d never thought he’d ever feel for her. He felt like he was floating out of his body.
“Jug?” She interrupted his reverie. “Come on, say something. I feel terrible that I’m sitting here saying all this to his best friend.”
Jughead was stumped. What the hell was he supposed to say to that? His mind went blank - blank as the screen before him.
The screen. In a flash, it came to him.
“Betts, you know I’m not great at talking about that stuff. But… I do know movies. And I know endings. Heck, I’m living through one right now.”
Damn it, why was she looking at him so intently? How was he supposed to concentrate on what he was saying? He looked away from her, determined to say what he needed to say.
“You know what I used to love about the drive-in? I loved that me, my dad, my mom and Jellybean could come in here, no matter how crappy it was at home, and suspend reality for two hours. Pretend that there was a better story than the one we were living. Pretend that we were this happy family, that dad wasn’t drinking or screwing up our lives.”
Betty looked at him in sympathy, and reached out to put her hand on his. If he’d been jolted by a simple poke to the head earlier, this felt like an assault on the senses. He tried to ignore it as he went on.
“But then the movie would end. And I’d hate it, because then the fantasy would stop, and we had to go home. I think that’s why I decided to work here. I wanted to preserve that feeling. I wanted my own illusions, too.”
Betty smiled in appreciation of how he neatly turned her own words into his.
“Tonight, I feel like that illusion ended. And you know, it does piss me off, but now I’m free of it. Now I don’t have to stick around and pretend that my life is better than it is. You get what I’m saying?”
“Yeah, but that’s depressing, Jug.”
“Hell yeah, it is. But it’s real.”
She was quiet and thoughtful, seeming to turn that over in her mind.
“I guess my point is, sometimes the illusions can just be that - all smoke and mirrors. And sure, they look and feel good, but they stop you from engaging with reality. That reality sucks sometimes, but I need to deal with it at some point, right?”
“Yeah. Right.” Betty nodded, seeming to concede his point. “Maybe we both needed our illusions to end. Maybe now, we can go out there and make our own reality. A better one.”
He smiled. Hearing her say that gave him a sense of peace about the Twilight and about his living situation. He’d figure this out. He always did.
Suddenly he was struck with a flash of inspiration. He got up quickly. She looked at him with puzzlement. “Jug?”
“Come on. I’ve got an idea.”
…
They stood in front of the main circuit box of the Twilight. As the lone worker in the drive-in, Jughead was in charge of turning off the main switch after every show. In his mind, he had already seen himself playing something symbolic over the speakers (“Closing Time” by Semisonic, or maybe something more vintage and defiant, like “My Way” by Sinatra), while turning off the switch and watching the lights go out one last time.
But then he looked down at Betty - his very own Hitchcock blonde and by far the most interesting plot twist in his life - and he knew that he wanted her to be a part of that. Because something was ending for her, too. And she needed to mourn it and mark it as much as he needed to say goodbye to the Twilight.
She looked at the main circuit and understood immediately. “Jug, this is – I mean, you should be –”
“Betts, this place means something to you. Maybe more than you realize.” He placed his hands on her shoulders and looked her straight in the eye. “You spoke of illusions earlier, didn’t you? Well, maybe this is where they began, at the Twilight, with Romeo and Juliet. Maybe, like you said, it’s time to shut that illusion down.”
“Yeah, but…” Betty smiled and looked off into the distance, as if envisioning her future. “Just because Archie didn’t fulfill that illusion doesn’t mean it wasn’t good.” She exhaled a long breath that she seemed to have been holding in for some time, then fixed her eyes on his. “It’s still a good story, Jug. And I still choose to believe it. Maybe Archie wasn’t meant to be Romeo, but that doesn’t mean I don’t get to be Juliet.”
It was then that Jughead knew, with a certainty that overshadowed everything else that was ambiguous and unsure in his own life, that one day, he would kiss Betty Cooper. Not tonight. Maybe not even tomorrow. But he made a quiet vow of it, promising himself that he would give himself the chance to write himself into her story. Not just as a friend, or a childhood memory. But as Romeo.
“Juggie?”
He snapped back into the moment. “Yeah?”
“We’ll do this together, you and me,” she said, indicating the switch. “It’s only right.”
Jughead could have fallen in love with her just for that. He was more than halfway there. He nodded and put his hand on the rusty handle. She brought her own hand up, her eyes jumping to his, suddenly conscious. Did he imagine it? A brief flash of awkwardness then her hand covered his - warm, soft, home.
“To endings?” she said, her voice small but assured, hopeful.
He paused, and thought of everything that was ending or had ended in Riverdale. Jason Blossom. The Twilight. The town’s false patina of innocence. His own stability.
And then he looked at her hand covering his, and all of that dissolved into the background, like the final frame of a movie fading to black.
“No,” he said. “To beginnings.”

Darian will then say he has to ride south right away he also says he made a promise to someone that he would see them again he has yet to surface final purpose if you remember at the end of season seven Barrick did say to another character they would meet again so we shall see now let’s go to another scene backand want to fill Brian Stark is sitting alone in the gods would next to the where witchery we can see that his hands are gripping the chair as his eyes are fluttering backand forth in his head then we will be thrust into a series of visions Brian Stark is having we see Jamie Lancaster taken office helmet during the first time we saw him arriving at winter fell we see net start statue in the Crips of one or fell we seeand hear the mad King sand bar in the mall we see the smoke rising from winter fell we see Millis Andra looking into the flames we see a black silhouette of someone standing on a battlefield holding a burning sort of their hand we can hear the sound of a baby crying inside of a tower then brain will see himself standing face to face with the makingand this immediately throws him out of the vision as we get closer to the endand then I can gets closer to one or fell their connectionand their powers will continue to grow strongerand stronger when Brian Stark looks up we see he is surrounded by John Devereaux’s the narrow signs of an aria they all want to know what brain has seen brand says everything I can see everything at first it was all fragments make it very hard to decipher what was past present or even future events now he knows brand says Castle black is gone along with its men the last hearth is gone along with all the numbers men then brain says I saw the making he knows were all here he will be here soon John tells everyone to meet him in the main hall brand grabs John by his arm right as he’s about to walk away brand says we need to speak soon it’s finally time you know the truth this gets the attention of the nurse in sans a are both wondering what brand meant by that everyone of importance is gathered inside the main hall winter fell John Snow informs every one of the recent attacks in the North by the making everyone in the room was silent John says Circe Lancaster has yet to send us any additional soldiers to fight the Army the dead with her without her they have to prepare for what’s to come they will need to reinforce all the walls of the castle they will needand I’ll Dragon glass weapons to every man womanand child I wonder fell John says the castle should not fall my father always said 500 men could hold winter fell against 10 000 if the castle should fall there are secret passageways below the ground that could help them escape from the north but let’s hope it doesn’t come to that then John holds up long call for everyone to see he says this sort is made of Valerian steel I have already defeated several white walkers with this sort they have control over the Army the deadand I King has control over them if we can take up the white walkers in the making we might be able to defeat the entire army I will go for as many white walkers as I can with long call but I’m gonna need your help this is one aria in Briand will stand up at the same time they both mentioned they also have Valerian steel weaponsand they will stand by John to help them defeat the white walkers in the making similarly stands up as well he informs John about his father sword heart Spain Sam also says he has been reading some of the old books I got from The Citadel he says he may have found some information that may be of interest Thierry Lancaster will shift in his seat he looks the same Owen says I would like to see those books as well as everyone begins to leave all the nurse tells John she would like to speak with him alone sans looks at the nurse suspiciously as does Thierry Lancaster Jonathan Erisman walk atop the castle overlooking the battlements the nurse wants to know when John’s good tell everyone about the relationship John doesn’t think that’s a good idea right now considering how many of the northern lordsand ladies still do not trust the nurse he doesn’t need anyone to lose focus or abandon their cause right before the Army the dead arrive they should wait until after the battle was over we can afford to lose anyone right now doesn’t like Circe sending us any of her soldiers we already lost the Knights watch in the numbers let’s discuss this again after the battle rages John begins walk away the nurse says wait there’s one more thing I spoke to Mr last night I told him I haven’t been feeling very well latelyand he decided to examine me to see what the issue could be John looks nervous he says is everything okay what’s the matter after a long silence the nurse says John I’m pregnant now let’s go to another scene Jamieand brought arrive at the twins the castle looks nearly abandoned now Jimmy says someone infiltrated their Castle killed Walter Frei in almost every other loyal man towels Friday brought notices that no one is guarding their bridge Jamie says if only Rob Stark would’ve found their bridge this way he will still be aliveand I would most likely be dead Bron slaps Jamie on the shoulderand says that only dreams came true when Jamieand Bron reached the castle doors they are greeted by several of the Frei daughters who are now in charge of the twins Jamie says we are now heading northand he needs to gather any soldiers or men that they have available there is a storm coming down from the walland everyone will die unless they follow him nor one of the Frei girl says queen Circe did not inform us of this why did we not receive a Raven Jamie says she sent me instead speaking associate minister we go back to King’s Landing in the next scene Circe Chi barnand the mountain are walking around the walls the right key Chi barn has men bring up the stashes a wildfire to place at each gate that enters the city along with many other locations no one will enter through any of the city gates without getting burned alive we can also see they are strategically setting up large blisters all around the city King’s Landing will not fall as easily as it did during season eight Circe says the nurse target areaand may have the larger army right now but we shall see how large that army years after the dead get there with them Circe vowels that the nurse will never step foot inside the red keep while she is still alive Circe also says even if we lose we have seen what fire does to the Army of the dead with the amount a wildfire we have I’m not concerned with anyone or anything taking over the city while I’m here now that I have the iron banks full support I may have one other surprise for our Dragon Queen the next scene takes place in the middle of the night feeling great joy in his small team a man land their boats on the shore the islandsand make their way up to the castle fee on his open sister you are is being kept captive their he wants to for your before your own eventually has or killed but to their surprise the iron islands are completely abandoned there is even anyone there guarding the castle Huron has taken every able bodied a fight with himand those who cannot fight were put to the blade you are is not there feelings were sphere has come true you’re a storm the silenceand in order to set her free feels you have to board that we could ship now let’s go to the next he this time we go to Dragon stone we can see Huron’s entire fleet is scattered around the island now that the nurse is taking all of her men north your own’s men along with the golden company were able to easily secure the castle for Circe Lancaster on board the silence we go down below we can see are a great joy she’s covered in bloodand looks like most of her hair’s been chopped off your own great joy enters the cabinand he begins laughing like a maniac right your space he informed sure that she’s not to make it off the ship aliveand he assures her that peons never to have the balls try to get her backand even if he did he’s gonna hang both of them from the front of the silence then he leans downand whispers tell me my sweet niece who is your king your doesn’t say a word but she does not break eye contact for a few moments it silent then your own begins laughing like a maniac againand you throw something that bounces off the artist face we soon find out why you’re hasn’t said a word Huron has Señora with her own tongue which he had chopped off almost immediately after her capture now we go back to one or fell were John the nurse brand Santeriaand in the May stirrer or looking over everything he took from The Citadel the when they can find out some more information about how to defeat the Nike Sam says he has several booksand scrolls about the long night the white walkersand the children of the forestand many others the only problem is he’s having trouble making sense of it all brand Stark says show me what you found then perhaps I can go backand have a look for myself Thierry Lancaster grabs one of the books that is already open this one has legends about the long nightand he begins to read aloud it has information about a legendary figure notices or a high who carried a burning sword called white bringer Thierryand looks over at Jonathan Arison says this reminds me of what Bella Sondra said to us on Dragon stone Milla Sondra said the prince who was promised will bring the dawn Sandy believes it could mean the prince or princess who will bring the dawn this is or a high figure sounds like a man brand Stark says old man used to tell me bedtime stories about a last hero who would lead the fight against the dead then the May Stark upsetand says well what do you suppose we find such a man with a magical burning sword Sam immediately looks over at John John says long calls Valerian steel but does not burn John looks over to Brandonand says we think this could mean brand says I need to go to the gods would in the final scene of the episode we will see a massive storm begin to roll in from the north everyone in the area begins to go indoors the location of the castle is revealed when we see the car Stark banners hanging by the main gate police car Stark is inside with a few of her household guards she sitting by the fire reading some of the messages the ravens brought in for the day she says word has arrived from winter fell castle black in the last horse no longer stand the mikingand the Army of the dead may be on the way to winter fell next they inform us that we should all get the winter fell as soon as we can they say we should prepare for the worst before she could finish telling Herman about the news from winter fell a sudden screamand the sound of a horn begin to echo through the castle police car Stark runs over to the window to have a look outside to see were the screen came from to her surprise she cannot see anything now it’s a complete white out from the storm then all of a sudden a thunderous screen comes from the clouds above the mikingand this area on suddenly appear through the storm the episodeand ends as a blue flame can be seen lighting up the night sky we now know house car Stark will also be added to the Army of the debt this episode will begin with us getting a glimpse of the aftermath of that attack there is smoke rising from a mound of stone which is where the castle once stood we can see that there are acresand acres of snow covered land soaked in blood there is also remnants of northern uniforms all over the ground as well as broken weapons this looks like your typical battlefield the only differences there are no dead bodies we know the miking has risen them all to fight in his armyand the most likely heading to winter fell which is where we will have our next scene back in winter fell we will see hundreds of northern man preparing the Starks Castle for the coming storm outside of the main gate of the castle we will see that make entrenches that appear to be a moat just like in season eight I want to enclose the castle in a ring of fire that will prevent the dead from entering winter fell I actually talked about this ideaand one of my videos before the final season came out were also can see hundreds of archers on standby all along the top of the wall of the castle all of their arrows are made of Dragon glass there is also to be barrels of these arrows all along the top of the castle walls as well down in the courtyard there are thousands of spears made up of Dragon glass to however great worm spear will look slightly different than the rest is will be made with the red Dragon glass were also good to see that Guidry has made himself a new hammer out of Dragon glassand there will be different spikes coming off the hammer each of the spikes will be made up of different color Dragon glass one black one redand one green John sans of ariaand ghost are walking around the courtyard overlooking all the work getting done to their home aria mentions how she came across nine Marriott 10 way to winter fell Orientals John I did want to come home with me but deep down I knew that she was meant to be free she hopes that one day she’s gonna be able to see her again as John looks over at ghost you can see that he is a sad look on his face realizing that ghost is the only dire Wolf left in the far north John talks about the day they were foundand how he told Ned they were meant to have them he also says as long as they’re alive there always can have a connection to one another no matter how much distances in between them this brings a smile Darius faceand John says even at times when himand ghost were separated he would always have a sense that he was still with themand aria says I have also felt that with my Marriott they are interrupted when one of the guards at the main gate begins to shout that a writer is approaching the castle baritone Darian has arrived from castle black berry looks like he’s about to collapse as John tells the guards opened the gateand allow him inside as soon as aria recognizes who it is she draws out her dagger Ari lets Barrick know right away that he is not welcomeand John looks somewhat confused aria says Barrick sold Gendron to Milla Sondra knowing full well that the right which wanted to sacrifice them baritone Darian will say kill me if you must but I’m here to play my part in the great war then Barrick looks at Johnand says the makingand the Army the dead will be here tonight the next scene is in King’s Landing begins with your own great joy greetings Ursula Elaine Mr Huron says I have completed every mission you have set upon me I have traveled the seas conquered your enemiesand even brought you the golden company Circe says you haven’t defeated all of my enemies but maybe this time you are rewarded your own smiles then the commander of the golden company greet Circe he talks about how good it feels to be in west ropes Circe reminds them not to get too comfortable they still have a war to win Gary Stricklandand wishes to speak to whoever commands Circe when Esther soldiers he wants to discuss their strategy Circe informs them that she is in the process of finding someone she can trust you can come in her latest are man or former commanderand brother has left the city for good she says he went to go join a straighter brother the best in the northand the foreign war with the dragons Circe then says about it doesn’t matter now I have everything I need right here Huron has a very big smile come across his face even though Circe wasn’t just talking about him we also see Circe notice the look on her Strickland’s face as the dragons were mentioned she can tell always very nervous about the dragons so Circe says what’s wrong are you afraid of dragons Terry says he wasn’t entirely sure they were even real resort about them for quite some time yet he has never seen them for himself afterwords you’re on gradually wishes to speak with Circe alone the scene ends a Circe says as you wish back in winter fell brand John Dinero Sam Terrienand the maced or are shown in the guards what Jerry Lancaster says there must be someone or something that has a connection to all the different legends about the long night as we saw the last episode the book about the long night talks of his or a high villa Sondra talks about the Prince was promised an old man used to speak of the last hero during her bedtime storiesand all these different stories it is said that these legendary figures I face the darknessand one Sam looks over at Brandonand says we need you to go backand see if there’s anything you can tell us about this man who was he held that he defeat the white walkers we need answers brand start will take a deep breath that his eyes will roll back in his head he’s about to see another series of visions sums can take place in the past some in the presentand even the future this time the very first thing he sees a black silhouette standing alone on a battlefield holding a burning red sword it’s very similar to his last vision of the shadowy figure only this time the man is standing face to face with an aching then Brendel see the same battlefield but now no one is thereand all the snow is gone brand Stark is walking across that battlefield that he sees a man face down in the water he can also see there are some red ruby scattered all across the water then he begins to see a crowd of people cheering there is a man mounted on a horseand he leans down in hand something to a girl who looks a lot like assessor aria then brain is at the wall there is a lot of blood covering the snow when brand looks into the blood he can see blue rose petals scattered throughout it soaking up the blood now brand is back at the tower of joy but this time he can see Leona is sitting up in the bed talking to a man with hair so blonde that it almost looks over brain knows its regularand he could hear him say our son has a songand it is the song of iceand fire Brandon sees a woman dressed in red with Harry’s right is a bleeding star it appears as if this woman is talking to someone brain can’t quite make out the man’s face it sounds like John’s voice but all he can see is a black silhouette with smoke rising from the sword then all of a sudden brain is back on the battlefield that is now covered in snow once again brain can see the figure that looks like a black silhouette with a burning sword clenched in his fist this time he standing face to face with the 19 right is brand sees the making take a step forward the black shadowy figure swings his sword as fast as lightning strikes when brand opens his eyes we can see that he is completely covered in sweat was steam coming off his body everyone else that’s in the guards what are silently staring at Brandon anxiously awaiting to find out what you seen Thierryand says are the legends real after a few moments of silence Sam says do you know what we need to do defeat that I King after a few more moments of silence brand finally says yes now it all makes sense I finally understand what the three a Raven was trying to show me Sam says what what is it the scene ends is brand looks over at John back in King’s Landing Circe’s amounts in your own great joy enter her private chambers Huron immediately says he wants the mountain to leave so they can speak alone Circe says don’t worry he won’t say a thing you’re on begins by telling Circe it’s time that he gets what is owed which we all know he wants Circe yourself you’re on then start bragging about how is a better man than Jamieand how Jamie will never become a back to Kings Landing unless his head is on a spike Circe does agree but she continues to play hard to get however Huron does eventually get Circe to start to soften up a bit Circe knows exactly what you’re on once but she tells them she’s already pregnant with Jamie’s child inside of her Huron says he doesn’t care she’s pregnant he says always ever wanted was to marry the most beautiful woman in the seven kingdoms which is why is here he’s a king who deserves to have a queen at his side they should rule Westerners togetherand he also says he’s never gonna betray her or abandon herand a time of need Circe does enjoy the attention she’s getting from him but she isn’t quite ready to just hand over the keys to her kingdom she does however assure him that he will get everything he wants in due time Circe then motions for the mountain to step outside Circe closes the door behind him then take Huron by the handand walks them over to the bad in the next scene we go back to winter fell were received John push in brand across the courtyard brand says it’s time that himand John go speak alone need to reinforce all the walls of the castle they will needand I’ll Dragon glass weapons to every man womanand child I wonder fell John says the castle should not fall my father always said 500 men could hold winter fell against 10 000 if the castle should fall there are secret passageways below the ground that could help them escape from the north but let’s hope it doesn’t come to that then John holds up long call for everyone to see he says this sort is made of Valerian steel I have already defeated several white walkers with this sort they have control over the Army the deadand I King has control over them if we can take up the white walkers in the making we might be able to defeat the entire army I will go for as many white walkers as I can with long call but I’m gonna need your to speak with him alone sans looks at the nurse suspiciously as does Thierry Lancaster Jonathan Erisman walk atop the castle overlooking the battlements the nurse wants to know when John’s good tell everyone about the relationship John doesn’t think that’s a good idea right now considering how many of the northern lordsand ladies still do not trust the nurse he doesn’t need anyone to lose focus or abandon their cause right before the Army the dead arrive they should wait until after the battle was over we can afford to lose anyone right now doesn’t like Circe sending us any of her soldiers we already lost the Knights watch in the numbers let’s discuss this again after the battle rages John begins walk away the nurse says wait there’s one more thing I spoke to Mr last night I told him I it did during season eight Circe says the nurse target areaand may have the larger army right now but we shall see how large that army years after the dead get there with them Circe vowels that the nurse will never step foot inside the red keep while she is still alive Circe also says even if we lose we have seen what fire does to the Army of the dead with the amount a wildfire we have I’m not weapons this looks like your typical battlefield the only differences there are no dead bodies we know the miking has risen them all to fight in his armyand the most likely heading to winter fell which is where we will have our next scene back in winter fell we will see hundreds of northern man preparing the Starks Castle for the coming storm outside of the main gate of the castle we will see ideaand one of my videos before the final season came out were also can see hundreds of archers on standby all along the top of the wall of the castle all of their arrows are made of Dragon glass there is also to be barrels of these arrows all along the top of the castle walls as well down in the courtyard there are thousands of spears made up of Dragon glass to however great worm spear will look slightly different than the rest is will be made with the red Dragon glass were also good to see that Guidry has made himself a new hammer out of Dragon glassand there will be different spikes John talks about the day they were foundand how he told Ned they were meant to have them he also says as long as they’re alive there always can have a connection to one another no matter how much distances in between them this brings a smile Darius faceand John says even at times when himand ghost were separated he would always have a sense that he was still with themand aria says I have also felt that with my Marriott they are interrupted when one of the guards at the main gate begins to shout that a writer is approaching the castle baritone Darian has arrived from castle black berry looks like he’s about to collapse as John tells the guards opened the gateand allow him inside as soon as aria recognizes who it is she draws out her dagger Ari lets Barrick know right away that he is
