Shipping is fun and all but I swear every single time someone makes a comment, whether as a joke or in a legitimate analysis, about there being "no other explanation" for a pair's interactions, I lose just a bit more of my sanity
Like, no, you guys don't get it. Romance is not about the Amount of devotion, it's about the COLOR. the FLAVOR of it all. a character can be just as devoted to their platonic friend as they are to their romantic partner, and they don't love either of them more, just differently.
But because the majority of people still have it stuck in their minds that romance exists on the highest tier of love, I'm stuck seeing endless takes that boil down to "these two care about each other too much for it to NOT be romantic" as if that's the core determining factor to how literally any of this works
In conclusion: stop telling me that I don't understand the story if I don't interpret the leads as romantic, I am TIRED
#analysis#meta#miscellaneous#fandom#shipping#media discussion#amatonormativity#lgbtq#I feel like tagging any of the fandoms I was thinking of when writing this would be a little mean-spirited potentially#Disclaimer: no one has actually been telling me personally that I don't understand any story in particular#It's just that the way people tend to phrase their analyses feels unnecessarily targeted at the reader and that's just. not great#even if I agree with every other point they make

one of my favourite little things about the murderbot diaries is how present all secunit's friends are even if they're not actually physically present. it doesn't do the annoying thing where it jumps through hoops to bring back characters that aren't really relevant to the narrative but it also doesn't do the other annoying thing where it pretends they never existed either. like secunit talks about art and mensah all the time even when art or mensah aren't in the book. it's clear how bharadwaj has impacted its personal growth even when she's literally on another planet. it complains about gurathin and pin-lee when they're not there. it's still sad about miki and don abene and it mentions tapan and maro and rami even though it only knew them for a few days (because when you're new at being a person every interaction with other people is important even if it's short). iris reminds it of mensah. iris also reminds it of ratthi. its hair is fluffy bc it let amena play hairdresser off-screen and it messages her so she knows it's okay. it doesn't have to worry about protecting volescu anymore because volescu retired thank goodness. it's still using thiago's language module. etc etc etc
it's such good writing because it's such a little thing that gives the characterization and relationships greater depth and also reinforces the running theme of friendship in the series and then also subtly gives this sense of 'the people you love are a part of you/your story' and also reinforces secunit's role as a storyteller because it's constantly telling little stories about all its friends.
#theyre good books brent#murderbot#dont mind me apparently when i have an evening nap and no work the next day#i stay up late possessed by a spirit of literary analysis.#oh hell im probably going to have another super nerdy literary dream tonight ffs.#the fact that this has happened multiple times is both sad and embarassing. i know we should all just be ourselves and embrace the cringe#but dreaming about literary analysis is really going too far i think.#if youve read all these tags you should also read the murderbot diaries. thank you and good night.

Providing a deep analysis of all Studio Ghibli films would be an extensive undertaking, considering the studio's rich and diverse catalog. However, I can highlight key themes and elements that are often present in their films.
1. **Spirited Away (2001):** Explores identity, environmentalism, and the spirit world. The bathhouse setting is a metaphor for societal structures.
2. **My Neighbor Totoro (1988):** Focuses on the innocence of childhood, the connection to nature, and the acceptance of mystery.
3. **Princess Mononoke (1997):** Tackles environmentalism, the clash between industrialization and nature, and the complexity of human relationships with the environment.
4. **Howl's Moving Castle (2004):** Examines themes of war, love, and transformation, set against a backdrop of magical realism.
5. **Grave of the Fireflies (1988):** A powerful anti-war film exploring the impact of conflict on two siblings during World War II.
6. **Kiki's Delivery Service (1989):** Focuses on self-discovery, independence, and the challenges of growing up.
7. **The Wind Rises (2013):** Tells the story of an aeronautical engineer against the backdrop of historical events, reflecting on creativity, passion, and the moral implications of invention.
8. **Porco Rosso (1992):** Explores themes of identity, war, and redemption through the tale of a World War I flying ace transformed into a pig.
9. **Castle in the Sky (1986):** Features an adventurous tale with themes of environmentalism and the consequences of human greed.
10. **Whisper of the Heart (1995):** Focuses on adolescence, dreams, and self-discovery, emphasizing the importance of pursuing one's passions.
These brief insights into a selection of Studio Ghibli films highlight their exploration of diverse themes, including environmentalism, identity, and the human connection with nature. Each film is a unique artistic expression that often combines fantasy with deep, thought-provoking narratives.

jason and danny childhood friends au memes (mild spoilers)
#Will Danny's anger and rage over Jason's death ever be called pit rage in fic?? No. But from what i know OF pit rage and how its sometimes#shown in DPXDC thats *technically* what it is. But that's a very loose technically. i thought the meme was funny and its accurate *enough*#dpxdc#danny fenton is not the ghost king#dp x dc#dpxdc memes#dpxdc crossover#dp x dc crossover#childhood friends au#cfau#danny by all accounts IS a vengeful spirit in this and that's something i realized like last month while ranting to gen about it.#a vengeful spirit by definition is a ghost whose come back from the dead to enact revenge on the living for their unnatural or cruel death.#in some cases they come back as a vengeful spirit because of an improper burial or a lack of burial at all. regardless of either one they'r#both accurate because danny neither has a grave nor had a funeral and his fury over Jason's death would've been enough to bring him back as#a vengeful spirit regardless of becoming a halfa. they ARE two sides of the same coin after all :]#kudos to gen and much love she's been inflicted with SO many cfau character analysis rants <3

Alastor is a complex character!
Despite being one of the few characters in Hazbin with confirmed identities (his ethnic background and sexual orientation), those identities are in of themselves, complex experiences.
There’s seemingly nothing about the character that is Black or White.
I think that’s why he is such a compelling character! Also, it’s probably one reason why he is such an attractive conduit for folks’ creative expression.
His identities are not necessarily why many people may gravitate towards him, but they do offer a chance for people to investigate him and explore a character—as unique as he is—into avenues they may not have considered before.
I can commiserate with feeling defensive of a character who shares an identity with you—ESPECIALLY an underrepresented one. Discourse is natural and completely fine! (And very educational sometimes in my experience)
But I don’t think it’s fruitful to police a fandom in these matters. Some folks come to my inbox (I delete the really rude ones) or comment sections with a very cop-like attitude to a space that’s supposed to be creative and/or fun *airhorn*
That’s my take as just some guy on the internet 🤓🛜 have a good dayyyyy

It's really interesting seeing people mostly interpret Sky and Viktor's relationship as romantic or her presence in the astral plane as literal.
To me, it's always been clear that Sky's connection to Viktor was one-sided and a sort of a crush or just genuinely her fangirling over Viktor. Even in the flashback scene, we see the curious way child Sky looks at Viktor, and then Viktor goes to chase his invention rather than go say hi. There's definitely something to be said about how Viktor's pursuit of his science and inventions leaves people he can build connections with behind or how the only meaningful, touch based relationship he has, either platonically or romantically, is with Jayce, but I digress.
Viktor's guilt about Sky is stronger than any feelings he might have had about her. When he fuses with the hexcore and Sky is in the astral plane and guiding him I see it not as literally Sky's spirit but more a subconscious part of Viktor's psyche itself and maybe the hexcore manipulating Viktor...
But at the end scene with Sky, when Viktor tells her he will miss their conversations, she says, 'No, you won't.' Now this is also correlating to Viktor giving up on humanity and his own humanity. So Sky might have been the metaphysical representation of Viktor's humanity. That's the shape and form of his humanity, manifesting through his guilt about Sky. When he loses her, he is physically losing his connection to humanity. It's only Jayce connecting to him as a person that's able to bring him out of his destructive view of humanity not being redeemed.
I have nothing against Sky, I think she was a important character for Viktor's development, but I don't see any romantic connection there and also believe that her presence with Viktor was more a manifestation of Viktor's humanity.

i really enjoy the contrast between jjk and dandadan's approach to the question of what it means to be human, specifically in how cursed spirits/evil spirits are perceived by the protagonists. where jjk is more philosophical and within the context of the story's universe ("humans and their inherent humanity; a clash of ideologies"), dandadan feels like a real world answer to that—within the first seven animated episodes, we've been introduced to two "big bads," both of which have been given gut-wrenching backgrounds, painfully human in a way that sobers the audience stunned. (appreciatively, i say) it gets too fucking real.
but i like the contrast in delivery and impact. where jjk reads like an almost stoic outline to a loaded question, dandadan is the raw pumping heart that colors within. mapping veins, living blood. what does it mean to be human? spirit or not, at the end of the day, it's all just human business.
#obviously there are more stories that use ghosts and spirits and the supernatural to convey human nature#but i'm hyperfocused on these two right now ^^#i wanna try and write some comparative analysis on the two because 1.) i like them both and 2.) they both deal with similar themes#in different packaging with dandadan being a romance and all#but admittedly i'm afraid of how that'll be received...considering...#rn i'm reading dandadan! but i also still have to read jjk's last chapter HAHA!#jjk#dandadan#dandadan meta#jjk meta

This is just an /opinion/ and I'm just tryna find ppl that agree with me.
I do not think having kids could quote on quote "fix" Shen Jiu, biological or otherwise. 1) A kid should not bear the responsibility to be that emotionally invested in the shit mental health of their caregiver. Don't make any child go through that. And 2) Nothing about any child could make Shen Jiu be a decent caregiver out of his own volition (sure, he was nice to NYY and probably did care for her, but that's about how far it went ejrrjf tho I'll gladly eat up AUs where he does treat her like a daughter when he knows how to care for a kid properly).
Good luck trying to make Shen Jiu get his shit together unless you're actually changing things about his past. The easiest "fix" imo is to give Shen Jiu an ADULT, heavy emphasis on this, an ADULT that could invest in his mental/emotional wellbeing when Shen Jiu is still a kid or a teen. How else do you expect Shen Jiu to be a responsible adult around kids when he's never had a responsible adult to care for him at all?
There's not a single authority figure in Shen Jiu's life that's ever done him good, not QJL, not WY, and SJ's own shizun, the prev. QJPL is up for debate but I have reasons to believe why they ain't shit too. And like hear me out, YQY doesn't count either coz SJ *thinks* YQY is another caregiver that gave up on him and didn't take responsibility for him. And obviously that's not true, but that's just how it is from his perspective sadly.
I still really like Shen Jiu's dark backstory, coz there's no Shen Jiu without it, buuuuuuuut if you really want a version of him that doesn't take that bullshit out on his disciples, do give him an ADULT, coz never a kid, give him and adult first, before you give him any kids, so he can LEARN HOW TO BE AN ADULT.
Ykwim???

I don't have the time at the moment to write a full essay but someone should definitely remind me to write a post later on the phenomenon that is Ratio's assholery being sanded away by well-meaning fans.
In a quest to fight against the "Ratio is a condescending jerk" stereotype from Ratio haters, pro-Ratio fans have now swung too far the other way, making him into a saint who loves everyone, isn't disdainful of failure, and believes every single person can equally pull themselves up out of mediocrity.
None of those things are actually true based on the game itself, where Ratio is, in fact, a judgmental person who struggles to accept the mundanity of those around him, believes in an educational elite, and can be exceptionally condescending, whether he means it or not.
He's a flawed character. His own flaws are absolutely central to his character, in fact. And yet none of his flaws preclude him from being meaningful, nuanced, and likeable.
It's okay that he's not actually that nice.
In defending a character from one extreme ("he's a bad person"), we don't have to jump all the way to the other side ("he's an angel").
He can be a little bit of a dick and still be a great character, promise.
#honkai star rail#dr. ratio#character analysis#well not a finished one#but the spirit is there#I keep seeing posts like#“Dr. Ratio wouldn't insult you for failing that math final!!”#I'm sorry to tell you this friends#he absolutely would#the fact that he might apologize afterward#will not stop him from insulting you at the start#Ratio is a character that is best understood through the concept of projection#He has never come to terms with his own personal failings#and that is absolutely projected on how he handles the world#failure is a sign of lack and is only redeemable in how people respond to it#if you pick yourself back up he'll respect you#if your failures overcome you#that's a you problem#I promise that the man with a 3% pass rate is not about the#“everyone can succeed academically” life either#the fact that Ratio recognizes his own shitty behavior#and apologizes for it multiple times in the game#but doesn't make any effort to change#should tell you just how rude his behavior is supposed to come across

Throughout her career as Queen and later as a Republic Senator, Padmé became desensitized to romantic advances. Her life's work was surrounded by people who were fake, two-faced, manipulative, and full of loud bravado. Nobody was sincere, and anyone who approached her always had ulterior motives, whether seeking to benefit from her high status or gain importance by association.
What's often overlooked, however, is that Padmé also harbored similar reservations about the Jedi. While she deeply respected and admired the Jedi, she found their mannerisms, etiquette, and stoicism unsettling at times:
Padmé's discomfort with the Jedi endures, unaffected by her numerous encounters. This lingering unease is consistently reflected in her thoughts, as recorded in the Queen Amidala Journal and other Star Wars novels.
Padmé admits they’re brave, wise, and respected beings but she can’t fathom them the way they are in nature. She finds them rather irritating 😂
As we see here^^ Padmé also finds their lack of emotional repression quite obnoxious as well. So much that she’d made a vow that if she were to ever become Chancellor, she’d have every Jedi demonstrate at least “one emotion” a year.
{When the topic comes to companionship, trust, and seeking aid, Padmé has enough professionalism to know that the Jedi are people she can always rely on. She heavily respects them and trusts them no matter what. But outside the professionalism, she doesn’t mesh well at all with them because her ideals, values, and beliefs are like night and day with theirs.}
This understanding of Padmé's perspective sheds light on why she fell deeply in love with Anakin. She famously declares him the only Jedi she could ever love, and it's clear why. Despite the odds against them – his Jedi vows, her senatorial duties – Anakin proves his devotion, showing Padmé the depth of his love and desire. Passionate and hopeless romantics, Padmé and Anakin share a profound connection. Much like kindred spirits. Anakin's all-consuming passion resonates deeply with Padmé. His patience, vulnerability, and unwavering commitment ultimately capture Padmé's heart, making him her soulmate.

if dark link was in totk how do u think he'd be handled ?
badly
sigh ok hold on ill be serious. i don't really think a dark link in totk would ever be necessary because totk is already doing everything that dark link did in oot, just via different methods. environmental things like the silent princess memorials and the spirits of dead soldiers offering up weapons in the depths give us a sense of the guilt link must feel over his past actions, as well as the fact that the inciting incident of the game is a similarly-framed failure in the face of an enemy which takes zelda and causes widespread destruction to hyrule. i've said it before, but link literally carries proof of that mistake and the guilt from it with him for the entire game in the form of rauru's arm--a reminder that his OWN arm wasn't good enough to prevent all this.
I think there are a few fights which cumulatively have similar narrative weight for totk link to the oot dark link fight, one of them being the gloom hands/phantom ganon (and yes, there is at least one required instance of this fight in order to get the true ending of the game, it's in korok forest.) the gloom hands are imo representative specifically of link's fear of failure and his guilt over his past failures. there's a reason they manifest initially as hands, and when they chase him they perform that reaching motion that's so reminiscent of him reaching for zelda and ultimately failing to catch her. they also cause a "midday blood moon" effect when link approaches them, which is strikingly similar to the way the sky changes when you approach calamity ganon in botw--his first major failure. once you fight and defeat the gloom hands, they reveal their true form--phantom ganon. if the hands themselves are symbolic of link's guilt and percieved failure, phatom ganon is the truth behind it--it was never link's fault in the first place. ganon is the cause of the destruction. link is blaming himself for something that he is not at fault for, and only after he faces his own guilt and fear head-on will the actual truth (phantom ganon) be revealed.
the other fight that i think sort of occupies the same narrative space as dark link in oot is the puppet zelda/phantom ganon fight in the castle sanctum. similarly, this fight deals with illusion and memory, and is explicitly ganon manipulating link using his trauma and guilt. There's a reason ganon leads link up into the sanctum, a place which obviously holds a crazy amount of significance for him. there's a reason puppet zelda turns the ruined room pristine again, and there's a reason she specifically mentions "memories" multiple times as she does it. ganon is attempting to break link down by poking at what he knows are sore spots--link's guilt over the way that hyrule was destroyed during his hundred-year absence, the fact that he doesn't remember much of his life pre-calamity (if you watch his face during that cutscene when she says 'memories'... agh. anyways.) his guilt over specifically what happened to zelda. All of this comes together so that ganon can force a vulnerable and unprepared link into a difficult battle in the hopes of taking him out. When link defeats phantom ganon, the sanctum returns to its ruined state, and puppet zelda disappears completely from hyrule. she's not even in the blood moon cutscenes anymore. Metaphorically, this is link coming to terms with the fact that she's really gone, and that he has to keep going anyway.

Introduction
This is a fan analysis about the results of 24 polls posted on Tumblr by the user @zeldatourney. Huge thanks to them to have organized this tourney.
(Keep in mind my first language isn't English, so I might make some minor mistakes)
This is a long post with multiple graphs, so I'm putting a "Read more" button here!
For each game, the question asked was "How high does [game] rank?" with 7 answers possible to choose:
S tier (One of the greatest)
A tier (A favorite)
B tier (I like it)
C tier (Meh)
D tier (I'd rather play something else)
F tier (AWFUL)
I haven't played this game
The poll started on the 2nd of December 2024 and ended the 9th of December 2024.
Disclaimer: This is not a representation of the Zelda community as a whole, but a result of people who saw and voted for the polls between those previously quoted dates.
For the rest of this post, I will simplify each game's name by its abbreviations. For example, "A Link To The Past" will be named "ALTTP". The polls didn't specify if it contains the original games or both the original games and the remakes. They will be named as such:
[TLOZ] The Legend of Zelda
[AOL] Adventure of Link
[ALTTP] A Link to the Past
[LA] Link's Awakening (DX) (+ the unnamed 2019 remake)
[OOT] Ocarina of Time (3D)
[MM] Majora's Mask (3D)
[OOS] Oracle of Seasons
[OOA] Oracle of Ages
[FS] Four Swords (Anniversary Edition)
[TWW] The Wind Waker (HD)
[FSA] Four Swords Adventures
[TMC] The Minish Cap
[TP] Twilight Princess (HD)
[PH] Phantom Hourglass
[ST] Spirit Tracks
[SS] Skyward Sword (HD)
[ALBW] A Link Between Worlds
[HW] Hyrule Warriors (Legend / Definitive Edition)
[TFH] Tri Force Heroes
[BOTW] Breath of the Wild
[COH] Cadence of Hyrule
[AOC] Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
[TOTK] Tears of the Kingdom
[EOW] Echoes of Wisdom
Collected data
Each poll being independent from each other, the number of votes varies from one poll to another.
For each games, I added the percentage (as picked up from the HTML for a better precision). The result is either 99.999, 100 or 100.001, so I sometimes cheated to add or remove 0.001 somewhere. Tumblr doesn't give you access to the exact numbers of vote per option.
So before ranking the games, I have to show you first what games are the most played. Adding all answers and doing:
Played (%) = 100 - "I haven't played this game" (%)
I'll use colours to differentiate 2D games (in terms of gameplay) to 3D games. I'll also highlight spin-off games and multiplayer games.
Here are the games played by more than 75% of players:
We can already see a huge pattern. All the 3D games are there. And the only 2D Zelda game to be played by 75% of players is ALBW. BOTW and OOT are the most played games of the sample, as those were huge turning points and both cultural and commercial success.
We can also notice the difference of 5% between the least played 3D game (MM) and the most played 2D game (ALBW).
Let's continue to look at the other played games:
EOW is most likely low as it's the most recent game, at this time, but also because it's not a 3D game. And the hype train was low compared to TOTK. (3 months of anticipation compared to 4 years)
And finally, the multiplayer games are the least played games, excluding COH. Also worth noting that all the spin-off games cited can also be played with another player, but it wasn't the main focus of the communication. COH being a musical tactical rogue-lite only appealed to a specific part of Zelda fans.
If these polls contained the CD-i Zelda games, Link's Crossbow Training and Tingle games, the score would probably be under COH, but we never know!
I'll keep these colours as labels, to recognize them better in the next images.
Alright. Time to share the ranking. Here is the global result, sorted by release date in North America:
It's kind of a lot to see! Overall, the games are pretty liked. So first, let's take a look at the disliked games:
Please note that the X-axis was zoomed, so we can see the result better.
We can already notice that AOL makes a huge contrast. As this game is considered as the black sheep of the franchise because of how different it is, its reputation mostly came from the difficulty of that game.
Almost a factor of 0.5 divides the first disliked game to the second. TFH the second disliked and the original TLOZ follows.
ALBW is the least disliked, with under 1%, counting D tier and F tier.
But notice the F-tier (red) line. It varies a lot, so let's take a look at the most hated games:
Yep, TOTK is third, this time. As I don't personally think it's awful, it definitively disappointed many by being too close to BOTW and having a lot of issues BOTW didn't have.
Nobody voted "F tier" for ALTTP nor OOT. Same for OOS but keep in mind this game was the least voted one too!
Alright, enough for the hate! Let's look at the most appreciated Zelda games.
Yep, the majority of Zelda fans like 22.5 out of 24 of the games! (TFH being exactly 50, I half-counted it!)
TWW is being almost unanimously appreciated, with almost 97%, and the second one to get this score is TMC, a 2D game, with more than 96%!
You can notice some gaps, like between ST and COH, and then between the Oracle games and TOTK.
Now let's look at the most loved games:
5 3D games are in the top 5, except for SS and TOTK. TMC is very close to beat BOTW and remains the most loved 2D Zelda game. Notice how SS and TOTK make a huge gap between the game before and the game after, like voters use them as references. The two Hyrule Warriors games are, in a funny way, between the Oracle ones.
Let's add a step forward and look at the S tier only:
Nothing changes for the top 9 games. However, EOW seems more nuanced and is less considered as best than TOTK.
Final results
And finally, let's rank them using the Majority Judgment:
The Majority Judgment was created to propose a more democratic way to vote. Each candidate has multiple mentions, and you (the elector) must attribute one mention to each candidate. Since this poll uses this exact method of vote, I decided to rank them all using the Majority Judgment. To count using the Majority Judgment, you must focus on the 50% axis, and look at the category that crosses it (more than 50%). That gives you the tier, and the best tier wins.
When two or more candidates get the same tier, there are multiple ways to rank:
The first way is to put a line at the middle and see which line has the higher percentage. (Less precise but more simple)
The second way is to divide it into multiple tiers by doing the first method again and again until each candidates has a unique tier. (More precise but less simple)
But since I didn't want to compare B++++ to B+++-, I used the first method. It's my democracy and I do whatever I want!
Just keep in mind that depending on the way to count these games may be swapped:
ALTTP and LA
OOA and PH
AOC and HW
SO, for the data. Top 5 is TWW, MM, TP, OOT and BOTW. To be honest, I imagined MM to be a more nuanced game, or at least more controversial, since it has a unique concept.
The A tier only contains 2D games, except SS. TMC, ST and ALBW are the favourite 2D games. ALTTP and LA are always very close. The last one of the tier is EOW.
Only mainline games are in the S and A tier.
The first game of the B tier is a spin-off game, followed by TOTK.
TFH was one vote away from being in the B tier. And no surprise, AOL is the last one.
