Despite its initial promising start, Belgravia: The Next Chapter has become something of a muddle, crammed with what feels like a half dozen subplots that don't get the depth they deserve and a narrative that's all too content to use Frederick's abundant (and annoying) Daddy Issues to as the crutch that propels its larger story forward. Thanks to a bloated midsection that seemed content to retread many of the same narrative beats 

— we get it Frederick blames James for all his problems and doesn't trust his wife —the series' final episodes had to rush things in a way that, while fun to watch play out, did a real disservice to the more significant stories of these characters. (Beyond the fact that he is gay, a vicar, and determinedly loves the brother who loathes him, it's safe to say we know almost nothing about James Trenchard.) 

After the dramatic events of last week's episode, which felt like it had roughly four hours of plot crammed into one, the Next Chapter finale has surprisingly fallout. Sure, most of the show's outstanding plot points are wrapped up (shockingly) neatly, but two-thirds of the big, highly anticipated moments take place offscreen. We hear about them afterward, and, as a result, this finale feels more like a book report than anything else. (Which isn't what anyone would call compelling television.) 

There's a tremendous amount of telling instead of showing, as though the show itself assumes its audience already knows everything generally turned out alright in the end, and the finale needs to run down a quick list of how each of those events happened. Almost everyone gets a happy — or at least a satisfactory — ending, but none feels terribly earned. And it's because we don't see any of the emotional work or growth the show claims has been going on behind the scenes. 

......Anyway, Frederick cures his daddy issues by meeting his actual father. Enright's secret letter-writing campaign was to the primarily villainous Bellasis all along. When Enright learns Bellasis is dying, he goes straight to James, and the pair of them convince Frederick that he should meet the father he never knew to get the chance to say goodbye. Frederick does, and Bellasis (in keeping with the episode's apparent theme) says things about being sorry and loving him from a distance, none of which are borne out by behavior he has exhibited in this series or the original Belgravia. But hey, he's dying, so I guess we're meant to be forgiving. (However, he doesn't miss the chance to tell James he's pretty sure he's illegitimate, so at least that tracks.)  

On the plus side, the visit to Bellasis prompts Frederick to finally reevaluate his relationship with his brother, who is still Literally the Best Person in the World. The Next Chapter still skims briskly past their reconciliation; given how fervently Frederick has spent most of this series hating James for made-up reasons or things behind his control, it would have been nice to see something more than the younger Trenchard gracefully being the bigger person for the fifth time. But I guess we can't have everything. 

.....Lots of things happened between the penultimate episode and the finale, including James' recovery from being nearly beaten to death. I guess his blackmailer took all those threats from Fletcher to heart because the good vicar no longer seems afraid of having his sexuality outed to his parishioners. He also let Emily down easy, telling her he is "married to the church" but insisting if he wasn't, boy, he'd sure consider marrying her! (James dodged a bullet here, no matter how unintentionally hilarious his non-breakup breakup speech is.) 

Frederick inherited money from Bellasis but gave it to his brother to distribute to the poor. (Again, the idea that Belgravia decided this character growth is something the audience didn't need to see boggles the mind!) Ellerby got over Clara with a blessed quickness and married his hometown girlfriend, Nell. The pair built a sweet memorial for their lost child, naturally painted by his Bohemian friends.......

The Marauders ironically called Severus “Snivellus” while their group was made up of: a posh four-eyed guy who knocked up his teenage girlfriendand die, a dude who at 36 still spent all day whining at his mum’s house, a professional victim who only got a teaching job out of pity and abandoned a woman 13 years younger than him whom he got pregnant, and a bootlicking twat who switched sides more often than he changed his pants. Frederick Trenchard learns a shocking truth

Frederick and James mend their broken relationship

I personally feel like Harry Potter is one of those franchises that's been practically corrupted by its fandom.

The fandom should respect the author, but doesn’t.

The fandom has people in it who say:

"I don't trust JKR with her own Intellectual Property."

"She doesn't know anything about the Marauders. The world and characters belong to us now."

"She would just make all the Marauders straight, white, and cis." (Not everything has to be gay? Wtf)

It's HER story. None of you children (or adults with immature minds) have any right to say that she doesn't know her characters. If she hadn't written them in the first place, you'd have nothing to do, would you? There would be no wolfstar or jegulus or marauders era to begin with.

And you guys do understand that Regulus is fucking dead, right? James and Lily got married. Remus and Tonks had Teddy. Sirius was too focused on the delusion that he thought he got his best friend back (through Harry) to give a shit about Remus. Evan Rosier was never important to the plot. Lily is actually an important character. "Pandora" Lovegood doesn't exist in the books (her name is never mentioned except on Pottermore), and, no, she isn't Evan's twin so stfu. Marlene McKinnon is mentioned once (and it's implied that she married a man). Y'all can't even get Dorcas Meadowes's name correct.

The amount of canon-divergence absurdity in fanon culture is appalling.

Like- there is absolutely no miniscule amount of evidence that Wolfstar could've ever been anything other than old friends. I wish you guys could see that and stop making up plots and delusional headcanons. (And just because headcanons are what "you believe/think about a character" doesn't mean they don't have to be logical and actually fit into the canon story, so I don’t wanna hear it.) 🙄

And before you tell me "if you don't like it then don't read it"— I don't "read it." I don't read ATYD or Crimson Rivers or Art Heist or whatever other fics are out there that you've decided is canon now. I read the real story, y'know, the seven, very much canon, books. And I was gonna read ATYD, but once I found out how y'all treat it as the Holy Grail of the 1970s Wizarding World, I decided it wasn't my cup of tea because I want to read a fic that is canon-compliant, that doesn't push every hot character into a gay relationship, that doesn't have explicit sex involving minors, that doesn't have self-inserts..

the hp fandom doesn’t know the difference between romione banter vs romione fighting. and that’s the root of the evil you guys. there’s a reason why they make up so fast. they clearly hang out behind the scenes when harry isn’t present. and whatever you think harry has with hermione is actually what harry has with ron. this fandom can excuse bigotry, abuse and terrorism but draw the line at banter and normal conflicts between best friends ijbol

Thinking of how in PS, Hagrid had to force Harry to stop reading a book about curses and jinxes and hexes, and how someone (I can't remember where) used it to point out that 1) Snape's interest in the "Dark Arts" and knowing curses was actually very natural in an 11 year old boy and 2) Harry and Snape were similar (can't remember if they made that point or if I noticed it)

So I give you severitus where Harry ends up becoming a miniature Snape because he ends up liking exactly the same things as Snape. Clothes? He asks for the gothic, most dramatic set that makes him look like a baby vampire. Books? Every single book Snape has on the Dark Arts (even the ones Snape stole from the restricted section), and when Minerva begs Snape to get the boy some fiction Harry reads only gothic horror that might not be entirely age appropriate (Severus doesn't know how that actually works, with the Slytherins he goes by what their parents would get mad at if they read it, but he has no such frame of reference for Harry so Harry can read whatever). Even toys or games- somehow there's always a lot of dark stuff getting involved that makes Snape actually rather invested in joining in. Harry even starts picking up Snape's habits of looking at someone and speaking in dramatic words that make you feel like he's cursing you (made all the freakier because this is a small kid who isn't blinking. Yes, he picked up the non-blinking from Snape too).

Just Harry and Severus being the exact same kind of weirdos who obsess over incredibly dark topics, dress like a pair of vampires, and invent fancy curse rituals in their spare time because simply hexing someone is boring, there must be a ceremony of it.

Also they eat too much chocolate at stupid hours, because they're both just a pair of boys left alone to do what they like because their parents aren't home (they've lost count of the amount of times Minerva walked in on a marathon of old horror movies at ridiculous hours in the morning and scolded them for it)
