if i'm not helping around the farm or foraging, you can find me sitting on that green roof i love oh so much. watching the sun rise above the trees, the world quiet and still, i allow myself to forget it's overrun by the dead just for a moment. most of the time though you'll find me with my best friend, beth greene. the two of us are practically attached at the hip, we run and sing and laugh; our carefree energy bringing smiles even to the most solemn of our bunch.
while they hate to admit it (especially shane), i'm an integral support for the group. cool under pressure yet particularly aggressive in a fight, i've got your back no matter what the world throws at us. got shot? i can pack a wound. thirsty? i'll go filter some creek water. need a laugh or a cry? come sit at the fire beside me. one way or another we will beat this cruel, cruel world-- and i'll make sure we have enough protein bars to do it (peanut butter flavored, obviously...)

Things I did to reset after a few days of intense chronic pain with increased ideation:
First things first, check in with the site So You Feel Like Shit, to take care of some basics. It walks you through when you last ate, slept, took your meds/vitamins, had some water, etc, and gives you teeny tiny goals to help you get by. It's non-judgemental, requires no sign in or anything, & doesn't limit how often (or not) you use it. The following might resonate with you if you don't know what else to do and you can do it in whatever order you want. This is just what makes me into a person.
PLEASANT ROT. I took massage balls, my rice heating pack for my shoulders and neck, and a full body heating pad into a comfy chair with my preferred blanket, and also took an ice pack for my chest so that I could stand all that heat AND reset my nervous system. Once I was comfy, I set up my Kindle to hang out with Lestat. I'll do a podcast that doesn't make me feel like I need to pay attention or the Endel app in my bluetooth headphones usually but tonight my roommate was playing the new Star Wars game so I let that be my background noise. I set a timer once I couldn't read anymore and let myself scroll TikTok asmr vids for a half hour.
JOURNAL. Sometimes I don't feel safe or stable enough to write about my feelings so I'll just doodle or make lines and shade in squares. Tonight I decided to use my journal to write down some Irish vocab staples and then moved into phrases that felt relevant to the struggle. The Irish for homesickness btw is Tá cumha i ndiaidh an bhaile orm.
LAUNDRY! I physically pulled the cubes out of the little shelf and threw them onto my bed, threw the clothes in my hamper into little piles near the appropriate cube, and then shoved them in. I still have a pile of clothes to hang up but hey, if I don't get to that, I still made progress. ANYTHING on a floor, chair, bathroom door/counter, gets tossed into the washer to do a fresh load.
GET CLEAN AND COMFY! Stripped down, used antibacterial wipes (I showered yesterday but also sometimes it might be longer due to pain/mental health/freak plumbing incidents, whatever), and put on fresh comfy clothes combos so my current night clothes can also hit the wash. Regardless of weather, put on a base for warmer temps and set aside a hoodie/sweatshirt and socks jic you get cold.
FEEL CUTESY! For me, this means braiding my hair, putting on a perfume, lighting a candle with a smell complimentary to that fragrance, and setting my ambient lighting just so. For you, could be slugging, a little lip gloss, flexing in the mirror, whatever.
HYDRATION! I fill a big mason jar with water to add a lil flavor packet to it and fill a regular water bottle for regular water. Now I have options and can refill the Brita filter. When I have extra bottled water, I use resets like these to make sure I have 3 or 4 in the fridge & two room temp by my bed, jic things get bad again.
SNACK TRAY! When I'm down, I don't really know what I want so variety is key. I put tortilla chips & spinach dip, a handful of almonds, a spoon of peanut butter, half a piece of cheesecake, & the aforementioned flavor water on this tray. If hunger returns, I am ready.
DISTRACTION! while the laundry is doing it's thing, I have booted up Dimension 20 on a screen and a little strategy game (Dawnmaker) on the other.
After my next rest- whenever and whatever that means for me- I will either repeat this process OR I can make a little to do list of other things that might bring me joy, make the next week easier, or stuff that just needs to get done. Everything on that list will be something that takes 20 minutes or less because I know that I'm still physically and mentally drained. The goal is not to overdo it to prove myself. The goal is to keep on keeping on.

Emma beelines for the vitamin water (she likes the hot pink ones & the white ones) & usually grabs from the fruit basket bc she's ✨healthy✨ but sometimes she grabs a granola bar with chocolate chips for variety
Dylan is a pretzels guy all the way & he's not super particular on a drink but he usually gets something fizzy. soda for some sugar & an energy drink if he didn't sleep well
Kaitlyn either gets juice or an electrolyte drink - she needs to keep her energy up for all the shit she has to do - & a protein bar or some trail mix. when she has time to relax or is just in a mood, she gets reeses peanut butter cups
i don't know why they only have the one bag of peanut butter butterpops or why it's hidden away, otherwise that would be the snack for Jacob. in their absence, he gets sour cream & onion chips or some jerky, with a delicious pepsi to go with (not sponsored)
Abi likes those little packs of powdered donuts & gets a coconut water to go with it :)
Nick eats fritos or bbq chips & drinks an energy drink - it's tough work being the camp's resident weirdo :/
Ryan gets a bottle of water bc he understands the importance of staying hydrated when he's outside most of the day & peanut butter crackers to eat. good protein!
honorary: if Laura & Max had gone to camp, Max gets cheese puffs & an apply juice. Laura gets salted popcorn & m&ms to share with her bf, & a pomegranite vitamin water

aC on vacation
so here's a summary of day 1, more later when i feel like getting the photos off my phone
got to a hotel where my brother and his wife are staying because fuck driving several hours when i should be asleep. google maps sends me to a parallel fucking dimension where the hotel was built on the opposite side of the city. also the roads here are somehow iced over when most of the road leading here wasn't so go figure. we try to get dinner and almost everywhere is closed on account of the snow, except for this hole in the wall chinese takeout place, because if you can count on any place to be open, it's one of these. they make the best general tso's chicken i've had in a long time, it turns out
woke up at like four in the morning for our 7:30 am flight, because by airport logic being only two hours early is tantamount to no-showing. this was right after shit got polar so the roads were covered in ice. at the parking place, i tried and failed to get past a barrier before the lever arm came back down again because it was on a slight incline and i couldn't get enough traction to clear it before it closed. this happened like SIX TIMES, it was some Three Stooges shit
our shuttle takes us over to the airport. i stick to my brother like a little kid to his mom because he's done this before and i have not. the flight is going to be five hours. which doesn't make sense to me because the return flight is only supposed to be three and a half. i dunno, maybe headwinds or something? i'm not a fucking pilot. i'm anxious to get this part over with because, again, never flown before. after waiting for clearance for what feels like forever (justified, on account of ice) we're finally in the air. it's... nothing? it's kind of mundane and somehow boring. one of the greatest achievements in human history and the only difference between this and being on a bus packed full of strangers is there's no road to rumble against that eventually numbs your butt, and also it's several degrees of magnitude faster than a bus i suppose
we arrive at LAX and if i didn't already feel like a fish out of water then oh boy. how the fuck do people live like this? how do you figure out who's supposed to go where? it's like living in the Kowloon Walled City, thought the guy who grew up imagining anywhere big enough to have a walmart counted as a "big city"
we get another shuttle, this one absolutely cramped with people, to get to the rental car place. my brother argues with the guy (who isn't even actually *physically* there, he's somehow doing sales over Zoom or some shit) for like half an hour before telling him to cancel the whole thing. turns out they wanted close to four times what he was originally quoted and weren't budging. we decide to get an uber to the closest In-n-Out, because we're in California, and also starving, so why not. we're standing in line looking a bunch of huge dorks carrying around suitcases. if i was ever going to be mugged in broad daylight it would be right here, right now. i order a double double combo, swap out the tomato for onions because raw tomato has all the texture and flavor of a balloon filled with wet sand, and onions and cheeseburgers go together like chocolate and peanut butter. the burger's okay, i guess. the fries are the most boring fries i've ever eaten. at least it's probably the cheapest meal i'll have while i'm here
we take another uber to get to our airbnb, about 45 minutes out. every other billboard is this guy
we arrive and immediately notice something is wrong. it was advertised as 4 bed. there are TWO double beds. this is pretty good if you're two married couples and not so much if you're the double third wheel travelling with two married couples. there's one room with a folding leather futon and not much else that seems kind of pointless and i decide this is where i'll stay. turns out that futon is the least comfortable sleeping surface ever manufactured in human history and there are maybe three exact positions that are even kind of comfortable enough to fall asleep in while lying on it and not having an iron bar press up into your lower back or your shoulderblade or the back of your neck

The poll of 2,000 adults revealed plenty of strange ingredients many people add to an ordinary salad to give it more taste — including banana, peanut butter, peppermint, and popcorn! Aside from the occasional topping oddity, most people gravitate towards the classics for their salads. The most popular toppings were still cheese (42%), tomatoes (37%), bacon (30%), croutons (28%), and cucumbers (27%).
Also, the best salad dressings are Ranch (50%), Italian (30%), and Caesar (25%). However, for 61 percent, the real “main character” of their salad story are still the greens. The best of the pack were romaine (46%), iceberg (44%), spinach (32%), spring mix (30%), and crunchy green lettuce (26%).
