Has the beat boom really gone BUST? (Melody Maker - November 14, 1964)
By RAY COLEMAN
Sitting in your 7s 6d seats at a pop concert, you might not realise you are contributing to a multi-million pound industry.
And this week, pop concertgoers become national news. The ultra-important world of records took a temporary back-seat as a talking point as the influential backroom boys pondered these questions:
Have beat concerts saturated the pop fan’s pockets? Is the boom bursting? Are there enough teenagers to meet the pop package shows being launched so regularly? And what can we do about it?
A remarkable meeting took place in the London flat of veteran promoter Larry Parnes. Agents and managers, some of whom never speak about their business with friends - let alone rivals - talked over the serious problems confronting show-biz moguls.
When that happens, something is going drastically wrong with the well-oiled pop machine that is geared to every breakdown or new road on an ever-changing map.
Clearly, the men of power are worried. They fear that the enormous spending spree by fans may halt unless they link up to prevent, for example, so many shows visiting the same towns too close together.
There is even talk of a promoters’ guild to plan pop tours centrally and to consider reducing ticket charges.
What is really going on? We canvassed the views of the people who are involved - the impresarios. They say:-
ARTHUR HOWES (he put on the Beatles, Billy J. Kramer, and Gene Pitney-Gerry and the Pacemaker shows and is one of the most experienced and respected promoters):
Promoters have got to get together to organise tours. We need an agreement that if one of us is taking a tour to a certain city, there’s a barring clause on other shows going there.
One reason why some tours lose money is because artists are asking too much in fees.
The new beat boom produced a lot of new managers who were interested simply in making quick money for their artists and themselves while it lasted.
Their fees were sky-high. They weren’t interested in long-term build-ups, which we had before.
But I think there are just as many people going to pop shows, overall - It’s simply that there are more shows on the road, so the audiences are spread out.
We didn’t do too well with Billy J. Kramer and the Ronettes but this new Gerry-Gene Pitney tour is going to be a big success, financially.
HAROLD DAVISON (man behind Britain’s major jazz tours, agent for Dave Clark Five, Applejacks and others):
When people say the bottom’s falling out of pop, they are presumably talking of everything from Cliff to the Beatles, so they’re wrong.
There will always be a market for big pop shows. Beat is different: lots of promoters put the nails in the coffin themselves. Now the horse has bolted they’re shutting the stable door.
If someone had a record in the hit parade, some promoter put him out on tour as top-of-the-bill, and then they wondered why they were in trouble.
My jazz shows are totally different - we charge a lot more for tickets, and though we never make a fortune we don’t lose.
TITO BURNS (doyen of the promoters, agent for Searchers, Dusty Springfield, Eden Kane):
I attended a gathering at Larry Parnes’ flat. I have no comment to make on the subject.
BRIAN EPSTEIN:
I don’t consider it true at all that the bottom is falling out of the business. Through my association with Arthur Howes we will have promoted three very successful tours.
Gerry’s tour, for instance, will go like a bomb - because, I feel, Gerry and Gene Pitney are real stars, and I say that poignantly.
I think its a good idea to sort out the business of venues. It is rather hap-hazard at present, with tours visiting the same city about the same time.
(Epstein was reported in the Daily Mirror last week as having lost £2,000 on recent Sunday pop shows at London’s Prince of Wales.)
ROY TEMPEST (he books about 400 groups into ballrooms and reports an annual profit of £250,000):
We’re doing three times the business of three years ago. I refused to be drawn into contracts because I could foresee this slump. I feel sorry for those losing money. I shall stick to ballroom bookings and continue to make money. I handle 90 to 100 shows a week.
One thing many people forget is that the kids can see the big stars so much on TV nowadays. So concerts suffer. Dances don’t because everybody likes dancing, and if you throw in a live artist as well, you’re okay.
I can afford to laugh at them all.
ROBERT STIGWOOD (promoter of Rolling Stones tours and the man behind Chuck Berry’s scheduled British tour next January):
There are no slumps on my tours. But I know other promoters have had a very bad year. There must be much more co-ordination and co-operation.
I shall lose £10,000 on the tour due to start last Friday - the P.J. Proby one that was to have become Chuck Berry, that didn’t materialise.
I don’t see how much can be done over artist’s fees, which are too high, because promoters are always bidding over each other to get the stars.
Presumably Arthur Howes has signed Orbison for next year for the same reason I have got Chuck Berry: he offered him more money. So the prices must stay up, and that cannot help audiences if they are slipping.
Promoter DON ARDEN was reported as having lost £7,000 on a recent tour starring the Animals and £5,000 on the Bill Haley-Manfred Mann tour.
What is the future for British pop shows?
At present the question is unanswerable. Promoters disagree about tactics but agree something has to be sorted out to prevent more big losses.
ONE THING IS CERTAIN: THEY ARE HAVING TO VIEW THE SCENE MORE SCIENTIFICALLY THAN EVER.

New Post has been published on https://freenews.today/2021/03/29/heres-how-the-trade-deadline-shook-up-our-nba-power-rankings/
Here's how the trade deadline shook up our NBA Power Rankings
The NBA trade deadline is in the books. How big of an impact did it have on our latest Power Rankings update?
What does it all mean ahead of Week 15? Here’s where our panel sees all 30 teams right now.
Note: Throughout the regular season, our panel (ESPN’s Tim Bontemps, Nick Friedell, Andrew Lopez, Tim MacMahon, Dave McMenamin, Eric Woodyard, Royce Young and Ohm Youngmisuk) is ranking all 30 teams from top to bottom, taking stock of which teams are playing the best basketball now and which teams are looking most like title contenders.
The Jazz have snapped out of their midseason funk. After losing five of eight games, Utah has won five in a row, giving the Jazz the league’s longest active winning streak again. Donovan Mitchell is averaging 31.6 points on .557/.513/.968 shooting splits during the winning streak. Sixth man Jordan Clarkson had been in a slump for most of the streak — he’s shooting 24.6% from the floor in the first four games — but busted out of it with 28 points on 11-of-21 shooting in Saturday’s win over the Grizzlies. — MacMahon
James Harden says he’s the MVP, and of course, he has a case. It requires a bit of amnesia to forget what happened in Houston to begin the season, but in terms of his Nets stint, he’s averaging 26-9-11 in 31 games on high efficiency and a record of 24-7. Many of those games have come without Kevin Durant or Kyrie Irving, a key component to Harden’s case, because the rich keep getting richer with the Nets adding LaMarcus Aldridge over the weekend. — Young
Philly finally lost Saturday against the Clippers in Doc Rivers’ first game back in L.A. against his former team. But the important news came before the game, with Joel Embiid and recently acquired guard George Hill both being cleared for on-court activities. If the Sixers had known they’d still be in first in the East when Embiid came back, they’d have been ecstatic; they still lead Brooklyn by a game and have a chance to do just that if he gets back in the lineup again soon. — Bontemps
Key additions: George Hill Key departures: Tony Bradley
This week: @DEN, @CLE, MIN, MEM
4. Phoenix Suns 2020-21 record: 31-14 Previous ranking: 4
It was a quick road trip for the Suns out east with four games in essentially five and a half days. After playing through the Florida portion of the trip on Tuesday (Miami), Wednesday (Orlando) and Friday (in Tampa against Toronto), Phoenix ended the week with a matinee win over Charlotte. The Suns maintained their hold on the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference but didn’t make any moves at the deadline. Instead, they just scooped up Torrey Craig for cash considerations as a part of the P.J. Tucker-to-Milwaukee deal. In four games with Phoenix, Craig averaged 8.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in 18.2 minutes a game while shooting 52.0% from the field and 45.5% from 3. — Lopez
Key additions: Torrey Craig Key departures: None
This week: ATL, CHI, OKC
5. LA Clippers 2020-21 record: 31-16 Previous ranking: 6
The Clippers had their best week of the season — one that could determine how far they go in the playoffs. They halted the surging Hawks, swept two at San Antonio and spoiled Doc Rivers’ return by beating Philadelphia to extend their winning streak to five. But the Clippers made a critical move by trading Lou Williams for Rajon Rondo and cleared two roster spots for possible key buyout additions by trading Mfiondu Kabengele. The Clippers hope Rondo addresses their greatest needs with leadership, basketball IQ and a championship-experienced point guard who can take the playmaking load off Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Terance Mann also has emerged as a key role player, averaging 15.2 points and 8.0 rebounds this past week. — Youngmisuk
Key additions: Rajon Rondo Key departures: Lou Williams, Mfiondu Kabengele
This week: MIL, ORL, DEN, LAL
6. Milwaukee Bucks 2020-21 record: 29-16 Previous ranking: 5
After eight straight victories, the Bucks dropped two in a row this week to Boston and New York as reigning back-to-back MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo sat with a sprained left knee. His older brother, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, stepped up with 23 points against the Knicks as the Bucks continue to try to work in their new pieces, including former Rocket P.J. Tucker. — Woodyard
Key additions: P.J. Tucker, Rodions Kurucs Key departures: Torrey Craig, D.J. Augustin, D.J. Wilson
This week: @LAC, @LAL, @POR, @SAC
7. Denver Nuggets 2020-21 record: 28-18 Previous ranking: 8
With the Lakers limping toward the postseason, the Nuggets saw their opening and made arguably the league’s biggest trade deadline move by adding Aaron Gordon. Gordon gives Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray another versatile and athletic above-the-rim scoring option. He also provides the Nuggets with more muscle to throw at LeBron James or Kawhi Leonard in the playoffs. JaVale McGee returns to Denver to provide rim protection, championship experience and another big body to throw at Davis. The moves also take pressure off Michael Porter Jr., who has been shooting lights out for over a month. — Youngmisuk
Key additions: Aaron Gordon, JaVale McGee, Gary Clark Key departures: Gary Harris, RJ Hampton, Isaiah Hartenstein
This week: PHI, @LAC, ORL
8. Los Angeles Lakers 2020-21 record: 30-17 Previous ranking: 7
It was a terrible week for L.A. — LeBron James suffered a high ankle sprain; the team went on a four-game skid; the front office struck out on a trade for Kyle Lowry which revealed that things aren’t going so smoothly with Dennis Schroder, the Lakers’ supposed point guard of the future — but it ended with some great news for the franchise. Andre Drummond, perhaps the best player to hit the buyout market this March, picked the Lakers. When James and Anthony Davis return from their injuries, Drummond could be the difference in getting L.A. back up the mountain this postseason. — McMenamin
Key additions: Andre Drummond Key departures: Damian Jones
This week: MIL, @SAC, @LAC
9. Portland Trail Blazers 2020-21 record: 28-18 Previous ranking: 9
The addition of Norman Powell is an interesting one for the Blazers. They are clearly in search of a two-way upgrade and defensive versatility to complement Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, but it also opens the door for small-ball lineups with Robert Covington playing the 4. As Portland gets healthy and its depth has been reinforced, it has the look of a dangerous group that might be a bigger playoff threat than some are giving the Blazers credit for. — Young
Key additions: Norman Powell Key departures: Rodney Hood, Gary Trent Jr.
This week: @DET, MIL, OKC
10. Dallas Mavericks 2020-21 record: 23-21 Previous ranking: 10
The Mavs are prioritizing protecting the health of their young franchise cornerstones over avoiding the play-in scenario, opting to rest Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis for part of back-to-backs since the All-Star break. Dallas is 5-5 since the break, with Doncic and/or Porzingis sitting out three of the losses, and the Mavs have slipped to 3.5 games behind the sixth seed. The Mavs are 1-4 this season in games missed by Doncic, who sat out Friday due to lower back tightness and was supposed to play Saturday before being sidelined by a non-COVID illness. — MacMahon
Key additions: JJ Redick Key departures: James Johnson, Wes Iwundu
This week: @OKC, @BOS, @NYK, @WAS
11. San Antonio Spurs 2020-21 record: 23-20 Previous ranking: 12
San Antonio’s new starting lineup of Derrick White, Dejounte Murray, Keldon Johnson, DeMar DeRozan and Jakob Poeltl has been a net positive so far this season in 10 games over 129 minutes. While the team is 6-4 in those starts, San Antonio has a plus-1.4 net rating with that group. In 16 games this season, the Spurs’ most-started lineup of DeRozan, Murray, Johnson, Lonnie Walker IV and the recently departed LaMarcus Aldridge was a minus-12.5 in 219 minutes. — Lopez
Key additions: Gorgui Dieng Key departures: LaMarcus Aldridge, Marquese Chriss (traded for, waived)
This week: SAC, SAC, ATL, IND
12. New York Knicks 2020-21 record: 24-22 Previous ranking: 16
The NBA is back! Catch all the 2020-21 season action on ESPN, ABC and the ESPN App.
Wednesday, March 31 • Mavericks at Celtics, 7:30 p.m. on ESPN • Bucks at Lakers, 10 p.m. on ESPN All times Eastern
New York keeps on winning, though it suffered a real loss when Mitchell Robinson broke his foot over the weekend. But the Knicks remain in fourth place in the East and are grinding out victories under coach Tom Thibodeau. A pair of big home games loom this week against the reeling Heat and Luka Doncic and the Mavericks. — Bontemps
Key additions: None Key departures: Austin Rivers, Terrance Ferguson (traded for, waived)
This week: MIA, @MIN, DAL, @DET
13. Boston Celtics 2020-21 record: 23-23 Previous ranking: 14
Boston cashed in on most of the Gordon Hayward trade exception at Thursday’s deadline by landing Evan Fournier from the Magic and then promptly won two games without him over the weekend. The question now is whether Fournier, who missed Saturday’s win over Oklahoma City due to the NBA’s health and safety protocols, will make his debut on Monday against New Orleans. The other storyline to watch: Can Robert Williams III cement himself as Boston’s long-term starter at center in the wake of Daniel Theis‘ departure? — Bontemps
Key additions: Evan Fournier, Moritz Wagner Key departures: Daniel Theis, Jeff Teague
This week: NOP, DAL, HOU, CHA
14. Atlanta Hawks 2020-21 record: 23-23 Previous ranking: 13
Nate McMillan’s eight-game win streak as the Hawks’ interim coach came to an end at the start of the week when Atlanta dropped a game to the Clippers. It will also be another long week on the road for the Hawks, who are currently on the league’s longest road trip of the season: eight games. They’ll travel to Phoenix, San Antonio and New Orleans this week before finally having a home game again on April 4 against the Warriors. — Lopez
Key additions: Lou Williams Key departures: Rajon Rondo
This week: @PHO, @SAS, @NOP, GSW
15. Charlotte Hornets 2020-21 record: 23-22 Previous ranking: 17
Charlotte responded nicely after last week’s news of LaMelo Ball‘s likely season-ending wrist injury, winning three of its past four games. The big highlight came during Friday’s win over the Heat, where Malik Monk poured in 32 points in 26 minutes off the bench. Terry Rozier has scored at least 22 points in the four games since Ball’s injury was announced. — Friedell
Key additions: Brad Wanamaker Key departures: None
This week: @WAS, @BRK, @IND, @BOS
16. Miami Heat 2020-21 record: 22-24 Previous ranking: 11
After rattling off 11 wins in 12 games, the Heat have fallen back to earth and enter the week in the midst of a six-game losing streak. The defense that helped get them back on track has gone missing. During the skid, the Heat are giving up an average of 113 points per game and haven’t been able to finish games late in several close contests. Victor Oladipo‘s addition should give the veteran group a needed jolt in the next week. — Friedell
Key additions: Victor Oladipo Key departures: Avery Bradley, Kelly Olynyk
This week: @NYK, @IND, GSW, CLE
17. Indiana Pacers 2020-21 record: 21-23 Previous ranking: 18
The Pacers have won four of their past five. During Indiana’s 109-94 win over Dallas on Friday, Texas native Myles Turner posted 9 points with 7 rebounds in addition to 7 blocks. Turner has 12 games with five or more blocks this season, tied for the third-most such games in a season in Pacers NBA history, per ESPN Stats & Information research. — Woodyard
Key additions: None Key departures: None
This week: @WAS, MIA, CHA, @SAS
18. Memphis Grizzlies 2020-21 record: 21-22 Previous ranking: 19
The Grizzlies have finally revealed a timetable for power forward Jaren Jackson Jr.’s return from surgery to repair the meniscus in his left knee. Executive vice president Zach Kleiman announced that Jackson will make his season debut by the end of April. Forward Justise Winslow, one of the other young players the Grizzlies hope will be a long-term core piece, has struggled as he chips off the rust from a long injury recovery process. Winslow has shot 34.2% from the floor in his first 16 games for the Grizzlies. — MacMahon
Key additions: None Key departures: Gorgui Dieng
This week: @HOU, UTA, MIN, @PHI
19. Golden State Warriors 2020-21 record: 22-24 Previous ranking: 15
The Warriors have lost four in a row and are playing some of their worst basketball of the season. Stephen Curry has been out since suffering a tailbone bruise on March 17 — and the good news is there is a chance that Curry plays Monday against the Bulls after going through all of Sunday’s practice. But Curry’s return isn’t going to be a cure-all for the Warriors’ defensive issues. They’ve given up an average of 121 points during the losing streak. — Friedell
Key additions: None Key departures: Brad Wanamaker, Marquese Chriss
This week: CHI, @MIA, @TOR, @ATL
20. New Orleans Pelicans 2020-21 record: 20-25 Previous ranking: 21
Zion Williamson finished the week with a fury. He bested his previous career high of 36 points in back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday night. He finished with 39 points in a loss to the Nuggets on Friday before going off for 38 points against the Mavericks in a victory the following night. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Williamson joined Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Adrian Dantley, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, Scottie Pippen and Giannis Antetokounmpo as the only players to have at least 75 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists while shooting at least 70% from the field in a two-game span. — Lopez
Key additions: James Johnson, Wes Iwundu Key departures: JJ Redick, Nicolo Melli

It was fitting the NCAA tournament was going on this weekend, because Harrison Barnes‘ game winner over the Cavs on Saturday — created by a full-court inbounds pass from De’Aaron Fox with 1.6 seconds remaining — was reminiscent of Duke’s Grant Hill hooking up with Christian Laettner to beat Kentucky in 1992. Don’t look now, but the Kings have won four in a row, putting them only a game back of the final play-in spot in the West. — McMenamin

22. Chicago Bulls 2020-21 record: 19-25 Previous ranking: 20
Even with changes to the starting lineup and rotation, the Bulls struggled to get in sync with three losses to Utah, Cleveland and San Antonio this week. In Nikola Vucevic‘s Bulls debut, the two-time All-Star put up a team-high 21 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists in 32 minutes despite a loss in San Antonio. Look for Vucevic and Zach LaVine to get it together for a playoff push. — Woodyard

23. Oklahoma City Thunder 2020-21 record: 19-26 Previous ranking: 23
With Al Horford shelved for the rest of the season, the Thunder aren’t being shy about their intentions the rest of the way. But also, consider a few things: They were only 8-8 with Horford this season, and with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander out for a month or so because of a foot injury, they weren’t doing much anyway. The Thunder also want to play their young players. One of whom is Horford protégé Moses Brown, who put up 21 points and 23 rebounds on Saturday. — Young

24. Toronto Raptors 2020-21 record: 18-28 Previous ranking: 22
Toronto promptly dropped two games in a row after breaking a nine-game losing streak, leaving the Raptors closer to 13th than 10th in the standings at a rather late stage of the season. There’s still time for Toronto to right itself, and keeping Kyle Lowry will help — assuming the right foot soreness that held him out of Sunday’s loss to Portland doesn’t linger. But the idea this team can be a problem for an opponent in the first round is looking more and more remote by the day. As a result, whether it can leap up in a loaded lottery is looking like the much more relevant question. — Bontemps

25. Washington Wizards 2020-21 record: 16-28 Previous ranking: 25
Russell Westbrook practically willed the Wizards to a win against Detroit with his 15th triple-double (19 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists) to stop a three-game losing streak. While the Wizards have still dropped eight of their past 10 and Bradley Beal is hampered by a hip bruise, they made a move that they hope will keep their dwindling playoff hopes alive. Washington traded Moritz Wagner and Troy Brown Jr. for Daniel Gafford and Chandler Hutchinson. The 6-foot-10 Gafford gives Washington a rim protector and hopefully helps fill the big-man void left by Thomas Bryant‘s season-ending injury. — Youngmisuk

26. Cleveland Cavaliers 2020-21 record: 17-29 Previous ranking: 26
The losses are piling up for the Cavs — eight in their past 11 games — including a couple of clunkers over the weekend. Cleveland mustered just 86 points in a loss to the LeBron-less Lakers on Friday, scoring a measly 10 points in the third quarter. It followed that up with just 98 points in a loss to Sacramento, despite winning the turnover battle with seven miscues compared to 18 for the Kings. — McMenamin

Yet another rebuild is underway in Orlando after the Magic traded away their veteran core of Nikola Vucevic, Evan Fournier and Aaron Gordon prior to the deadline. At the deadline, the Pistons traded Delon Wright to the Kings for Cory Joseph, and second-round picks in 2021 and 2024. — Woodyard

Guard Kevin Porter Jr.’s development is one of the Rockets’ top priorities the rest of the season and one reason trading Victor Oladipo made sense despite not getting much value in return from Miami. Porter had 25 points in Saturday’s win over the Timberwolves, his third time scoring that many points in eight games in a Rockets uniform. According to ESPN Stats & Information research, the Rockets had previously had only two such performances by players 20 or younger in franchise history. — MacMahon

30. Minnesota Timberwolves 2020-21 record: 11-35 Previous ranking: 29
One of the (many) issues with the Wolves is that they just aren’t playing competitive games. With a young team, the experience of being in close games and making key plays late is crucial. But of the Wolves’ past nine losses, only one was decided by two possessions. They are routinely getting blown out by 15 or 20, which makes it hard to develop a young roster. — Young

THE LAWLESS (Haines) – Joseph Losey (1950) avec Macdonald Carey, Gail Russell, Johnny Sands.

At the age of 5, writer and comedic storyteller Jamie Brickhouse became obsessed with Peggy Lee and her song about escapism by means of “breaking out the booze and having a ball.” The song served as Jamie’s guide to several nights of debauchery while living in New York City. But things changed dramatically the night he drunk dialed the dazzling pop icon.

Five Fun Facts About Peggy Lee’s “Is That All There Is?”
youtube
1. It’s true – Jamie definitely drunk dialed Peggy Lee to gush about his fondness for the song, sometime in the mid-90s, with the help of his friend Mr. Parker who got her number! (You’ll have to listen to the story to hear how that all went.) At that time, she was still performing in her 70s, sometimes in a wheelchair.
2. When you take a look at who was involved in making “Is That All There Is?” you’d also think it was born to be a hit. It was originally written by the legendary songwriting team Leiber and Stoller. They took inspiration from Thomas Mann’s story Disillusionment, who Leiber’s wife introduced him to. Many of the words in the song’s chorus are taken straight from Mann’s story. And Randy Newman composed the backing orchestral arrangement.
3. The song passed hands before it made its way to Peggy. English singer and actress Georgia Brown first performed it during a TV special in 1967. Then the one and only Leslie Uggams made the first official recording in 1968. It became a hit once it reached Peggy. Guy Lombardo and Tony Bennett recorded their own versions the following year.
4. Peggy’s version reaching #11 on the U.S. pop singles chart in 1969, becoming her first top 40 hit since the release of “Fever” 11 years prior. It also won Lee the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and is now enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame.
5. “Is That All There Is?” has been covered by a wide range of artists, including Chaka Khan, P.J. Harvey, and Bette Midler.

Take a look at my preseason thoughts on the league and how Auburn’s SEC schedule looks for the upcoming season.
Happy GAMEDAY everyone! Now that we’ve gone through the rosters, the non-conference schedule and other basketball nuggets, it’s time to look at the SEC Schedule and offer some predictions for this year. I can’t wait to look back on these predictions in March and see how wrong I was about this season. I went game by game picking all the games and this is how I “think” it will turn out this season. I’ve listed everyone’s KenPom rankings as well and Auburn will begin at #22 in the KenPom rankings.
Florida 15-3
Kentucky 15-3
LSU 13-5
Auburn 12-6
Tennessee 10-8
Mississippi State 10-8
Alabama 9-9

Arkansas 8-10
Ole Miss 8-10
Georgia 7-11
Texas A&M 4-14
South Carolina 3-15
Vanderbilt 3-15
Saturday January 4th
3:30PM, SEC Network
at Mississippi State Bulldogs
Last Year’s Record: 23-11 (10-8)
KenPom Ranking: 53
Preseason Media Prediction: 7th
My Projection: 6th
Leading Returning Scorers: Tyson Carter (10.4 PPG), Reggie Perry (9.7 PPG), Nick Weatherspoon (9.6 PPG)
The Bulldogs lost their top 2 scorers in Quinndary Weatherspoon and Lamar Peters and will play without Nick Weatherspoon for the first 10 games of the season. This is now Reggie Perry’s team as he was named Preseason 1st Team All-SEC a few weeks ago. They have great size at every position on the floor and in the game in Starkville last season, they took advantage of it. This will be a good challenge for Auburn getting out of the gate in SEC play.
Wednesday January 8th
8PM, SEC Network
Vanderbilt Commodores
Last Year’s Record: 9-23 (0-18)
KenPom Ranking: 148
Preseason Media Prediction: 14th
My Projection: 14th
Leading Returning Scorers: Saben Lee (12.7 PPG), Aaron Nesmith (11 PPG)
It’s a whole new era on the West End of Nashville. Jerry Stackhouse will make his SEC Coaching Debut in the Jungle. There’s nowhere to go but up for the Commodores after the team posted the first winless season by a team in the SEC in over 60 years. Darius Garland played just 5 games before an injury sidelined him and he went on to become the 5th pick in the NBA Draft. The Dores never recovered from losing their starting PG last year.
I think you'll see improvement from Vandy this year as the team had a solid recruiting class including the son of NBA Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen, Scotty Pippen Jr. Nesmith was named to the 2nd Team All-SEC squad.
Saturday January 11th
5PM ESPN/ESPN2
Georgia Bulldogs
Last Year’s Record: 11-21 (2-16)
KenPom Ranking: 55
Preseason Media Prediction: 9th
My Projection: 11th
Leading Returning Scorers: Rayshaun Hammonds (12.1 PPG), Tyree Crump (9.1 PPG), Jordan Harris (7.8 PPG)
Nicolas Claxton went to the NBA or else I think this team would be a Top 4 or 5 preseason pick. The player to watch for Georgia though is Anthony Edwards, and this will be your only chance to see him play in Auburn. Ranked #3 in Rivals Top 150, Edwards, an Atlanta native, elected to stay home for at least a year as he looks likely to jump to the NBA after the season. Fellow freshmen Sahvir Wheeler and Jaywkon Walton also look to make a big impact in their 1st year in Athens. Tom Crean’s squad looks likely to take a step forward after a 13th place finish in the league last season.
Wednesday January 15th
8PM, ESPN2/ESPNU
at Alabama Crimson Tide
Last Year’s Record: 18-16 (8-10)
KenPom Ranking: 70
Preseason Media Prediction: 6th
My Projection: 7th
Leading Returning Scorers: Kira Lewis Jr. (13.5 PPG), John Petty (10.2 PPG), Herb Jones (6.4 PPG)
Whether you want to believe it or not, Alabama made an outstanding hire getting Nate Oats from Buffalo. Oats has won everywhere he’s gone and quite frankly, the recruiting battles between Oats and Bruce Pearl will be ones to watch. The biggest wins for Oats was convincing Kira Lewis, John Petty and others to remain in Tuscaloosa. In addition to Lewis at the point, they added James “Beetle” Bolden, a grad transfer from West Virginia to the backcourt who has shot 40% from 3-point range in his career.
Last year, Auburn swept Alabama. The 2nd loss was a crippling blow to the Tide’s NCAA Tournament hopes. I’ve seen Alabama predicted to finish higher than Auburn by several people and this team, on paper, looks like a NCAA Tournament team. It’s gonna be difficult to sweep Alabama this year but at this point, we’ll have a good idea of where each team stands.
Saturday January 18th
12:30PM, CBS
at Florida Gators
Last Year’s Record: 20-16 (9-9)
KenPom Ranking: 12
Preseason Media Prediction: 2nd
My Projection: 1st
Leading Returning Scorers: Noah Locke (9.4 PPG), Keyontae Johnson (8.1 PPG), Andrew Nembhard (8 PPG)
I think Florida will win the SEC this year and the addition of grad transfer Kerry Blackshear from Virginia Tech is a big reason why. Combine that with the additions of highly rated freshmen guards Scottie Lewis and Tre Mann, along with Andrew Nembhard and several others returning to Gainesville and you’ve got the makings of a potential Final Four squad this year.
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports
Kerry Blackshear
Auburn hasn’t won in Gainesville since 1996 and until beating the Gators twice last season, hadn’t won against Florida since 2009. This will be one of the most difficult games of the year for Auburn.
Wednesday January 22th
6PM, ESPN2/ESPNU
South Carolina Gamecocks
Last Year’s Record: 16-16 (11-7)
KenPom Ranking: 69
Preseason Media Prediction: 10th
My Projection: 13th
Leading Returning Scorers: AJ Lawson (13.4 PPG), Keyshawn Bryant (9 PPG), Maik Kotsar (6.7 PPG)
Remarkably, South Carolina was 16-16 overall last year and finished tied with Auburn for 4th in the SEC. The non-conference schedule was brutal last season for them is a big reason why but they surprised some folks in league play, as is typical of Frank Martin teams. Chris Silva is now playing for the Miami Heat which means he won’t be able to torment Auburn this season. Last season in 2 games against the Tigers, Silva scored 59 points and grabbed 25 rebounds.
This game is also not in Columbia which has been a house of horrors for Auburn the past 2 years. This team will e primarily led by a group of sophomores this year led by Lawson who elected to stay in Columbia for at least another season. With Silva gone, all eyes will be on Lawson if the Gamecocks hope to finish better than 16-16 this year.
Tuesday January 28th
8PM, ESPN/ESPNU
at Ole Miss Rebels
Last Year’s Record: 20-13 (10-8)
KenPom Ranking: 60
Preseason Media Prediction: 8th
My Projection: 10th
Leading Returning Scorers: Breein Tyree (17.9 PPG), Devontae Shuler (10.3 PPG), Blake HInson (8.3 PPG)
Terence Davis is gone but Breein Tyree and Devontae Shuler return to Kermit Davis’s 2nd Ole Miss squad that made a surprising run to the NCAA Tournament last season. A team that was picked to finish last in the league last year, finished 7th in the league but were blown out by Oklahoma in the Round of 64.
Kermit also had Auburn’s number last year sweeping the season series and executing a game plan of slowing the game down, and making tough shots late in the shot clock in both meetings.
Saturday February 1st
5 OR 7PM, ESPN
Kentucky Wildcats
Last Year’s Record: 30-7 (15-3)
KenPom Ranking: 2
Preseason Media Prediction: 1st
My Projection: 2nd
Leading Returning Scorers: Ashton Hagans (7.7 PPG), Immanuel Quickley (5.2 PPG), Nick Richards (4 PPG)
P.J. Washington, Tyler Herro, Reid Travis, Keldon Johnson and others are gone but Ashton Hagans and E.J. Montgomery are back for Year 2 in Lexington. After admitting that they didn’t take Auburn seriously in the Elite 8, Coach Cal will have his kids ready for this one.
Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports
Ashton Hagans
This year’s talented freshmen crew is led by Tyrese Maxey, the 10th ranked recruit in America. Kahlil Whitney (14th), Keion Brooks (29th), Johnny Juzang (34th), and Dontaie Allen (68th) make up the talented group of freshmen Coach Cal put together this year. Like last year, they also added a grad transfer, Nate Sestina, from Bucknell. He averaged 15.8 points and 8.5 rebounds a game for the Bisons.
Depending on how things are progressing in the season, this game has a primetime television slot and could very well be Auburn’s 1st Basketball College Gameday appearance.
Tuesday February 4th
6PM, SEC Network
at Arkansas Razorbacks
Last Year’s Record: 18-16 (8-10)
KenPom Ranking: 44
Preseason Media Prediction: 11th
My Projection: 9th
Leading Returning Scorers: Isaiah Joe (13.9 PPG), Mason Jones (13.6 PPG), Jalen Harris (7.6 PPG)
I think the Razorbacks are better than 11th and Eric Musselman is a big reason why. He is doing phenomenal work with the fanbase and is building a heckuva recruiting class for next season. In fact, Musselman and Pearl are battling for several guys in next year’s class inclduing Chris Moore and Jaylin Williams who spent their weekend on the Plains.
But as for this year’s team, they have to first and foremost replace Daniel Gafford. That won’t be an easy task but Isaiah Joe appears ready to be the next star in Fayetteville. Joe had a great freshmen season knocking down 113 3-pointers last season, 2nd in the SEC to Bryce Brown (of course).

Saturday February 8th
11AM, ESPN/ESPN2
LSU Tigers
Last Year’s Record: 28-7 (16-2)
KenPom Ranking: 38
Preseason Media Prediction: 3rd
My Projection: 3rd
Leading Returning Scorers: Skylar Mays (13.4 PPG), Javonte Smart (11.1 PPG), Emmitt Williams (7 PPG)
There was a lot of things going on in Baton Rouge towards the end of last season. Will Wade was suspended by the school the day before the regular season finale against Vanderbilt as part of the FBI Investigation and didn’t coach in the postseason. Wade was reinstated in the middle of April and remains on the Tigers sidelines. Wade has turned around the LSU program in short order since taking over in the Bayou and has a solid group returning this year.
However, last year’s SEC Regular Season Champs visit Auburn without Tremont Waters as he’ll now be Bryce Brown’s teammate on the Maine Red Claws in the G-League. LSU has however added Trendon Watford, a highly touted kid out of Birmingham who spurned Alabama to go to Baton Rouge.
Wednesday February 12th
6PM, ESPN2
Alabama Crimson Tide
Auburn has defeated the Tide by an average of 20 points over the past 3 meetings inside Auburn Arena.
Saturday February 15th
5PM, ESPN2
at Missouri Tigers
Last Year’s Record: 15-17 (5-13)
KenPom Ranking: 39
Preseason Media Prediction: 13th
My Projection: 8th
Leading Returning Scorers: Mark Smith (11.4 PPG), Jeremiah Tilmon (10.1 PPG), Javon Pickett (7.7 PPG)
No more Jordan Geist, no more Porters, it’s a new day in Columbia but here’s another team that I think will be better than their preseason prediction. Mark Smith and Jeremiah Tilmon return to bolster the Tigers frontcourt and they got several contributions from their freshmen last year.
Injuries really derailed Mizzou last year but as we’ve seen, there’s been one team picked very low by the media who ends being the surprise team. I think it could be Mizzou this year.
Wednesday February 19th
6PM, ESPN2/ESPNU
at Georgia Bulldogs
Auburn has won 4 straight against the Dawgs, the longest winning streak against Georgia since winning 12 in a row between 1976-1980.
Saturday February 22nd
11AM, CBS
Tennessee Volunteers
Last Year’s Record: 31-6 (15-3)
KenPom Ranking: 20
Preseason Media Prediction: 5th
My Projection: 5th
Leading Returning Scorers: Lamonte Turner (10.9 PPG), Jordan Bone (10.6 PPG), John Fulkerson (3.1 PPG)
Auburn plays 2 of their final 5 games against Tennessee this season with the first being in Auburn. There’s a lot of pieces off both teams that are no longer there and this will be a very interesting game from the sense of all the new pieces who look to make an impact.
Grant Williams, Admiral Schofield, and Jordan Bone have all departed Knoxville. This year, they will need Jordan Bowden and Lamonte Turner to take a step forward. They do bring in highly touted freshman Josiah James, the 14th ranked recruit who will be asked to be a big part of Rick Barnes team in his first season on Rocky Top. A lot of predictions have this team high but others have this team on the bubble. How these 3 develop will go a long way in determining if Tennessee will return to the Big Dance.
Tuesday February 25th
6PM, ESPN/ESPN2/SEC Network
Ole Miss Rebels
Breein Tyree is the SEC’s leading returning scorer from last season.
Saturday February 29th

Texas A&M Aggies
Last Year’s Record: 14-18 (6-12)
KenPom Ranking: 58
Preseason Media Prediction: 12th
My Projection: 12th
Leading Returning Scorers: Savion Flagg (13.9 PPG), Wendell Mitchell (13 PPG), TJ Starks (12.3 PPG)
We’ve looked at every team except for the Aggies who will be the opponent for the final home game for Austin Wiley, Anfernee McLemore, Danjel Purifoy, Samir Doughty and J’Von McCormick. Buzz Williams takes over for Billy Kennedy in College Station and a change was sorely needed. Buzz was the primary target for the Aggies and they got their man. He did a terrific job at both Marquette and Virginia Tech, getting the Hokies a basket away from the Elite 8 last season, losing to Duke in heartbreaking fashion. This will be The Aggies will visit Auburn for the first time since handing the Tigers their only home loss of the 2017-2018 season.
The Aggies do return 5 of their top 6 scorers so perhaps this is another team that could surprise in Year 1 of the Buzz era.
