Ten years ago, a little baby loptrcoptr (then under the username daysoffuturepasta), freshly in love with Norse mythology, decided to make a few Norse-myth-meme valentines. I did seven rounds of these things (technically 6 and 1/2) for a total of seven years and I had a lot of fun. Even made some for my grad department to put around the place, and once shoved them into friends’ pockets on a night out to see how long it took them to find each one.

Now, in honor of the tenth anniversary of these trashy little things, have one more!

Valentine's day

To anyone who feels alone this valentine's day because they do not have a valentine -

It's a useless holiday. St. Valentine never actually married people and he wasn't some great hero of love. He wasn't really real and was given a pagan holiday.

Frey/Freya's day is the original "valentine's" day for all intents and purposes. Frey and Frigga both were deities of love and joy. When Christianity came around, they turned the holiday into a celebration of their religion and made it off of the critical ideals of these Norse deities.

If Norse religion isn't your cup of tea, here's a more historical take on why you shouldn't be sad. There is evidence to suggest that st. valentine was really many men who wanted to write lovely poems that rhymed. (Think of the multiple "authors" of the Odyssey, while we credit Homer)
