(Inter)National Lego Day
Construct creative builds with this beloved, versatile toy, enjoy the hilarious LEGO Movie or visit a LEGOLAND theme park with your family.
Lego – have you played with it? These little plastic colored bricks have been sparking creativity and joy in both children and adults of all ages for almost 70 years! Small but mighty, Lego bricks inspire creativity, and thanks to their ingenious design, they can be used to make virtually anything you can imagine, from cars to dinosaurs, houses to aliens – if you can dream it, it can probably be built out of Lego.
As such a versatile toy that appeals to all ages of people, it’s not surprising that Lego is now recognized as the World’s Most Powerful Brand, towering over Google, Nike, and Ferrari to claim the top spot in 2017, but as with most gigantic companies, Lego started from humble origins and International Lego Day marks the very beginning.
History of Lego
International Lego Day is held on the very same day that Danish carpenter, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, first submitted his patent for the original Lego brick in 1958. Like no other brick that had come before this toy brick would have a sophisticated interlocking brick system, making it strong, versatile, and less likely to fall apart when simply knocked over.
Not one to mess around, Godtfred made sure not only to patent the design for his single Lego brick, but also to patent the concept of multiple bricks being used together in a building system, and this protected his design from being ripped off by competitors. Although this day is often seen as the birthplace of Lego as we know it, the company itself was in fact founded by Godtfred in 1932, creating a variety of wooden toys, and taking the name Lego from the Danish words “LEg GOdt” which translate to “play well”.
Ahead of their time, Lego was one of the very first toy manufacturing companies to buy an injection mold machine with which to create plastic toys, a move which shortly led them to create the very first plastic Lego brick in 1949. In the 17 years from 1949 to 1966, Lego grew exponentially into a global company that was retailing in 42 countries. They now boasted a product range that now contained 57 Lego sets and 25 Lego vehicles and with factories that were producing more than 706 million Lego elements each year – but the company didn’t stop growing.
In 1967 the LEGOLAND Band was established and in 1968, the very first LEGOLAND opened its doors to the public, attracting more than 625,000 visitors in its first season. Today there are 9 LEGOLANDS across Europe, Asia and the US, with a further three due to open in the next few years.
Nowadays Lego is a truly global enterprise, its strong brand identity, and still unique simplistic design, keeps it a favorite amongst children, while its history and versatility make it even more collectible to adults.
International Lego Day Timeline
1932 LEGO founder starts a woodworking shop in Denmark
In a small woodworking shop in Billund, Ole Kirk Christiansen makes all types of furniture and household items. But his favorite creations are toys for his sons, so he eventually names his company LEGO–a combination of two Danish words meaning “play well”.
1946-1949 Plastic bricks are first sold by the LEGO company
A wood shortage following WWII makes manufacturers look for alternative ways to create products. Christiansen gets his hands on the first plastic-injection molding machine in Denmark and starts selling the Automatic Binding Brick, the predecessor to today’s stackable blocks.
January 28, 1958 LEGO patent application is submitted
With Christainsen’s son, Godtfred, at the helm, the company submits their patent application for the tubes and studs that would add stability and connectivity to the plastic blocks. This anniversary coincides with International LEGO Day each year.
1976 LEGO minifigures are introduced
Realizing that the sets might be more fun if a human dimension was added, the company releases the iconic yellow-faced humanoid bricks.
2014 LEGO feature film is released
When watching his son play with LEGOs, a Hollywood producer gets the idea to make an animated movie. It is a huge hit and grosses more than $450 million, with more films coming in the following years.
10 super-fun facts about Lego
In 2016 LandRover set the World Record for the largest piece of Lego construction with their huge 43-foot-high replica of Tower Bridge. This monumental structure used 5,805,846 individual pieces of Lego which would have stretched all the way to Paris in France if laid out end to end.
If Lego Minifigures were to be classed as a population, they’d be the largest population in the world! With more than 4 billion of them in total.
There are so many Lego bricks in the world, that it’s estimated that they outnumber people 80 to 1.
Despite the first Lego brick having been made in 1958, you could still interlock one with a Lego brick-built today – the design hasn’t changed a bit!
In 2009, James May created a house entirely out of Lego! The house took more than 3.3 million bricks to make and even had a working toilet, a bed, and a shower!
Lego is now so popular that 7 sets are sold every second.
Although Lego is played by both girls and boys, women and men, they still have a bit of a way to go before they reach gender equality with roughly 86% of their Lego Minifigures being male.
If you were to collect all the Lego bricks in the world and stack them together then they would be 2,386,065 miles tall!
Although Lego makes toys they are also classed as the world’s biggest tire manufacturer, making over 400 million tires each year to keep their fleet of various lego vehicles rolling.
Although Lego was the first to patent the Lego brick that we know today, they didn’t technically invent them. The story has it that the salesman who came to sell Godtfred his first plastic injection mold machine was carrying an example interlocking brick in his pocket which had been designed and patented by Hilary Fisher Page. Godtfred improved on the design by perforating the brick and adding tubes on the bottom to help tighten the connection.
How to celebrate International Lego Day
Whether you’re five or sixty-five, you’re never too old to celebrate International Lego Day. Here are a few things that you could do to celebrate the day:
Play with Lego! Perhaps the most obvious thing to do on International Lego Day is to play with Lego of course! Grab your old lego set, or buy one especially for the day and sit down for a few hours of relaxing and creative fun. If you now have children yourself then make a sculpture together and take a moment to remember how many generations have grown up with Lego by their side.
Watch the Lego Movie! Lego has become so iconic that it even has its own movie dedicated to it. In fact, there are now two! Fun for all the family, cozy up on the sofa with some popcorn and watch as Lego figures come to life in stunning animation.
Visit LEGOLAND. And finally, for perhaps the most immersive Lego experience, pack your bags and take a trip to one of the many LEGOLAND theme parks. Be wowed by the impressive Lego structures and ride the exhilarating roller coasters for a day you’ll never forget.

Ok, you got me at food courts. Are you counting the ones at Macy's and Thompson Center? The DMV I'm guessing is in the Thompson Center. Are you counting the Illini Center building with the path over South Water? WHERE ARE THE HIDDEN FOOD COURTS?! I see a field trip coming on...
Oh shit, there are TWO DMVs in the Pedway! There’s the Thompson Center one which is a full DMV, but there’s also an “express DMV” for renewing paperwork and such just west of the north end of the blue line Jackson stop. I think it might be walled off at the moment? But it’s definitely there. You can’t get a driver’s license there but you can like, renew your registration, turn in paperwork, that kind of thing.
There is the Thompson Center food court, there’s a tiny one en route from Michigan to State that eventually passes the Macy’s (it used to have like three places to eat but I think now it’s just a Subway), and I wasn’t even counting the Macy’s basement food court but it TOTALLY IS, it opens into the pedway area where the nail salon is. Plus there’s the one in that big complex of hotels and office buildings at South Water where the Hannahs Bretzel is, which is technically Pedway even though it’s above ground, it has Pedway seals in the floor, and there’s ALSO that food court in the Metra Randolph station, the Pedway flows directly into it. FOUR secret food courts! Five if you count the tiny Subway food court.
I mean at least you know if you get lost in the pedway you will eventually find something to eat.

13 skyscrapers that will transform Chicago’s skyline
As the birthplace of the skyscraper and home to one of the world’s greatest skylines, Chicago is in the midst of reinventing itself with new batch of very tall, high-profile towers.
While Chicago hasn’t completed an 800-footer since 2010, that’s about to change and in a very big way. Four projects exceeding that mark are already under construction with more patiently waiting in the wings. With big name designers like Jahn, Viñoly, Stern, Pelli, Gang, Childs, Goettsch, Smith, and Gill involved, the newest generation of tall towers is raising the bar both literally and architecturally.
Here’s a look at new class of skyscrapers that will redefine Chicago’s iconic skyline. Under construction projects are listed first followed by green-lit and finally still-pending and on-hold proposals.
This article was originally published on October 5, 2015 and has been updated to reflect the latest news.

Magellan Development Group
Status: Under Construction
Currently rising along Chicago River’s main branch, the 1,198-foot Vista Tower is certainly hard to miss. Its angular design from Chicago architecture firm Studio Gang is made up of three stacks of geometric “frustums” wrapped in eight different shades of glass that emphasize its undulating form.
The supertall skyscraper will contain 406 luxury condos, a 192-room five-star hotel, and impressive amenities. Vista Tower is poised to become the city’s third tallest building and second highest roof when it opens in 2020. It is the tallest building under construction in the United States outside of New York.
NEMA Chicago
Rafael Viñoly Architects
Status: Under Construction
Formerly known as One Grant Park, this 76-story tower is climbing skyward at the southern edge of Chicago’s skyline at the corner of Roosevelt and Indiana and brings some serious height to the South Loop. Developed by Crescent Heights and designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects with a nod to the Willis Tower’s “bundled tube” layout, the 800-unit luxury rental tower broke ground in early 2017 and will open in 2019.
Rising 896 feet, NEMA Chicago comes up a little short of the official supertall definition set by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. That being said, the project’s second phase does call for a taller twin tower which may exceed the magic 984-foot threshold.
One Bennett Park.
Related Midwest
Status: Under Construction
After breaking ground in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood in 2016, the 70-story One Bennett Park project recently welcomed residents to its 279 high-end rental apartments. Work continues to its 69 ultra-luxe upper level condominiums which are expected to open in the spring of 2019.
Developer Related Midwest selected New York’s Robert A.M. Stern Architects to design the 836-foot-tall building with numerous setbacks and facade variations to echo the Art Deco residential towers of the early 20th century. The high-rise will be joined by a new park from Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, the firm that designed Chicago’s Maggie Daley Park and 606 trail.
The tower—located at 451 E. Grand Avenue—and its adjacent green space both get their name from architect Edward H. Bennett who co-authored the influential 1909 Plan of Chicago with legendary urban planner Daniel Burnham.
110 N. Wacker
Goettsch Partners
Status: Under Construction
Located at 110 N. Wacker, this Bank of America-anchored office tower is approved to soar 55 stories and 820 feet along the Chicago River. Designed by Goettsch Partners and co-developed by the Howard Hughes Corp. and Riverside Investment and Development, it features a 45-foot-wide riverwalk, a public pocket park, a soaring lobby, and a serrated western facade designed to maximize water views.
Now under construction, the high-rise replaces the midcentury low-rise General Growth building. Bank of America Tower is the tallest new office building to rise in Chicago since the Two Prudential Plaza opened in 1990. It is expected to open in 2020.
One Chicago Square.
Goettsch Partners/Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture
Status: Approved
Proposed to replace a block-sized parking lot across from Chicago’s Holy Name Cathedral at the corner of State Street and Chicago Avenue, this mixed-use project from JDL Development and Sterling Bay calls for a pair of towers rising 49 and 76 stories atop a shared podium. According to the latest information from the developer, the taller of the two will top out at 1,011 feet.
One Chicago Square is a design collaboration between Goettsch Partners and Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture. It will contain a Whole Foods store, a Life Time Athletic club, restaurant space, commercial offices, 1,090 parking stalls, and a mix of 869 rental and condo units. Work is expected to begin in early 2019 and wrap up in 2022.
1000M.
JAHN
Status: Approved
This Helmut Jahn-created condo building at 1000 S. Michigan Avenue will make a sizable impact on Chicago’s southern skyline when it eventually soars 832-feet over Grant Park. The glassy 74-story skyscraper will replace a surface parking lot with 323 luxury condominiums with interiors designed by Kara Mann.
Project developers Time Equities, Oaks Capital, and JK Equities are currently pre-sales mode and have listed a number of units including a South Loop record-shattering $8.1 million penthouse. Provided pre-construction sales are strong, 1000M could break ground in 2019.
“Parcel I.”
bKL Architecture
Status: Approved
Across the river from 400 N. Lake Shore Drive and east of Vista Tower, this 85-story condo tower is slated for for “Parcel I” within Lakeshore East’s alphabetical master plan. Designed by bKL Architecture the glassy skyscraper will rise 950 feet above it parking podium.
The 600-unit tower was approved by the Chicago Plan Commission in October of 2018. Before work on the “Parcel I” high-rise begins, developer Magellan Group and LendLease will first complete two shorter sibling towers: a 40-story rental building at “Parcel K/L” and a 50-story condo tower at “Parcel J.” The developers expect construction on the three-tower project to take between five and seven years.
Salesforce Tower.
Rendering by Steelblue
Status: Approved
The final piece of the three-building Wolf Point development, Salesforce Tower will rise 813 feet above the junction of the Chicago River’s north, south, and main branches. Anchored by its namesake tenant, the 60-story skyscraper is on track to break ground in 2020 and open in early 2023.
The glass Pelli Clarke Pelli-design office building will slot between the 490-foot Wolf Point West high-rise and the 660-foot under-construction Wolf Point East building. Developers Hines Interests and Joseph P. Kennedy Enterprises have zoning already in place to build a 950-foot-tall tower at the prominent riverfront site.
BMO Tower.
Goettsch Partners
Status: Approved
Another Goettsch and Riverside collaboration, this BMO Financial Group-anchored office tower will rise next to Chicago’s Union Station. The 50-story, 700-foot building will include a 1.5-acre publicly accessible park at its base above a 400-stall garage.
A key part of Union Station’s multiphase master redevelopment plan, the transit-oriented project replaces an existing Amtrak-owned parking structure. BMO Tower is on track to break ground in 2019. It will be the city’s tallest building west of Canal Street when it opens in 2022.
725 W. Randolph.
Roger Ferris + Partners
Status: Approved
While a height of “just” 615 feet puts this tower well out of the running for the city’s tallest, the project headed to 725 W. Randolph Street will nonetheless make a big impact given its location in the mostly mid-rise Fulton Market District. The 52-story development is slated to become Chicago’s tallest building west of the Kennedy Expressway—eclipsing the 495-foot apartment tower at nearby 727 W. Madison Street.
Designed by Connecticut-based Roger Ferris + Partners, 725 W. Randolph will feature 370 rental apartments, ground floor retail space, an Equinox fitness club, and a 165-room Equinox-branded hotel. Related Midwest received zoning approval for the project in the summer of 2018 and hopes to break ground on the skyline-extending tower in early 2019.
Golub & Co./CIM Group
Status: Proposed
At 1,422 feet, this proposed addition to Chicago’s neo-gothic Tribune Tower is gunning for the title of Chicago’s second tallest building. Slated to replace a parking lot just east of its historic neighbor, the yet-to-be-named skyscraper will contain a 200-key luxury hotel, 439 rental apartments, 125 condominiums, and 430 parking spaces.
The design from hometown architecture firm of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill is quite slender by Chicago standards—partly due to a protected view corridor requiring Tribune Tower to remain visible from the Ogden Slip to the east.
While co-developers CIM Group and Golub & Co. continue to seek city approval for their new supertall, the team is moving ahead with a conversion of the landmarked 1925 Tribune office building into luxury condominiums.
SOM
Status: Stalled pending design change
After years of rumors and speculation, Related Midwest unveiled its design for the site of the failed 2,000-foot Chicago Spire in in May. The plan called for a pair of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill-designed towers containing a combined 550 rental apartments, 300 condo units, and 175 hotel rooms. The duo would rise 1,100 and 850 feet atop a shared podium.
In October, downtown Alderman Brendan Reilly rejected the proposal and placed the project on hold until the Related “addressed legitimate concerns” raise by neighbors. Issues included a desire to remove the hotel component, reduce bulk of the podium, and restrict public access to the site and neighboring DuSable Park.
Related has yet present an updated design for 400 N. Lake Shore Drive. The developer was originally hoping to break ground on the towers in the summer of 2019 ahead of a 2023 delivery date. It’s unclear how the alderman’s rejection will affect the proposed timeline.
“The 78.”
Rendering by ICON, master planning by SOM, architectural contributions from ASGG and SOM
Status: Master plan approved, design subject to change
While the final design of the ambitious megaproject known as “The 78” will change as potential users are identified, the multiphase plan allows for skyscrapers as tall as 950 feet—serious height considering the site’s Near South Side location between the South Loop and Chinatown.
Developed by Related Midwest and master planned by architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, The 78 received initial zoning approval from the Chicago Plan Commission in November.
Although the site reportedly came very close to landing Amazon’s HQ2 campus, work on the 62-acre mixed-use development will likely need to secure some other big corporate tenant before vertical construction kicks into high gear.

On the road just before 9:00 am. Sunny day, 64 degrees. Should be high 70′s today. Heading for Quechee Gorge on 2 East. Going to take side roads there for scenery. So pumped to be in the mountains all day! I got Becky a postcard in the hotel on our way out.
Vermont has a lot of cemeteries. So many that we have seen multiple Cemetery Roads. I think the amount of graves outnumber the amount of living people. I assume it’s family cemeteries on farms, but I really don’t know.
The Feed Bag doesn’t exist anymore. Would have been funny to see it.
We were just talking about how clean and nice Vermont is compared to New York. Lots of junk of farms there.
9:57 am, Montpelier was very quaint. Old brick buildings. Getting off of 2 East to take 12 South until we get to 4.
10:56 am, quick pit stop in Randolph, VT. The lady in the gas station knew everyone by name. Cute, little town.
Around 12:00 pm, got to the covered bridge. Drove up to Sugarbush Farms. Gorgeous view. Walked the maple path. Saw goats, cows and horses. Bought maple sugar candies (Logan has never had them before), garlic mustard and dark maple syrup. So tasty! We got to sample everything there.
Heading for Quechee Gorge on 4 East. Saw another covered bridge in the town of Quechee. All wooden, quaint.
2:50 pm, just finished eating (finished the lunch I packed before we left Michigan). Quechee Gorge was breathtaking. Hiked to the bottom of it, then hiked up to the dam. Beautiful day, sunny, 70 degrees. As grandma would say, sun is shining! As we hiked back from the dam, I saw some older people having a picnic. Reminded me of my grandparents and aunt and uncle.
Heading up to New Hampshire now. Going to take 91 North. Vermont has tons of solar panels. Almost as many as the amount of cemeteries.
This trip has been fun so far. I’ve been thinking about how I want it to pan out but also how they took it. Just stopping at cool stuff they wanted to check out. (I don’t know how much of their trip was planned, actually.) I’m trying to take the same approach while still seeing the major stops they saw. It’s been a really cool adventure, and I’m so lucky to be on it with someone who has the same sense of adventure and spontaneity.
Took 89 North to 63 East to get on 302 East toward 91 North.
4:36 pm, stopped at a scenic overlook off 91. Conveniently, it was the same one they stopped at! I recognized it from the video. Looks across to New Hampshire.
5:15 pm, entering New Hampshire on 2 East. “Live Free or Die.”
6:15 pm, in the hotel and unpacked. Mt. Madison Inn & Suites. I think they stayed here. Heading out for Indian food in Conway, then going moose hunting in the White Mountains.
8:47 pm, back at the hotel. No moose sightings. No animal sightings at all. Ate dinner at Shalimar of India. So good! I had the aloo gobi, Logan had channa masala.
Went for a quick dip in the hot tub. Could have been hotter, but oh well. Still enjoyed it. A young couple tried to join us at the end. We left immediately. Pass.

BERKELEY, Calif./LANSING, Mich. (Reuters) – Supporters of Donald Trump clashed with counter-protesters at a rally in the famously left-leaning city of Berkeley, California, on a day of mostly peaceful gatherings in support of the U.S. president across the country.
At a park in Berkeley, across the bay from San Francisco, protesters from both sides struck one another over the head with wooden sticks and Trump supporters fired pepper spray as police in riot gear stood at a distance.
Some in the pro-Trump crowd, holding American flags, faced off against black-clad opponents. An elderly Trump supporter was struck in the head and kicked on the ground.
Organizers of the so-called Spirit of America rallies in at least 28 the country’s 50 states had said they expected smaller turn-outs than the huge crowds of anti-Trump protesters that clogged the streets of Washington and other cities the day after the Republican’s inauguration on Jan. 20.
“There are a lot of angry groups protesting and we thought it was important to show our support,” said Peter Boykin, president of Gays for Trump, who helped organize Saturday’s rally in Washington.
In many towns and cities, the rallies did not draw more than a few hundred people. At some, supporters of the president were at risk of being outnumbered by small groups of anti-Trump protesters who gathered to shout against the rallies.
In Berkeley, the total crowd of both supporters and detractors numbered 200 to 300 people, police spokesman Byron White said. Three people were injured in the clash, including one who had teeth knocked out, and police made five arrests.
One Trump supporter who took part in the violence came equipped with a baton, a gas mask and a shield emblazoned with the American flag.
White said police did break up fights between the two sides.
“We’ve made a number of arrests, it’s one of those things where we monitor the situation and take action as necessary,” he said.
The violence comes a month after mask-wearing protesters at the University of California, Berkeley, shut down a planned speech by a provocative far-right commentator by lighting fires and smashing windows.
On Saturday, smaller skirmishes broke out in other parts of the country.
In Minnesota, 400 Trump supporters packed the state capitol rotunda in St. Paul and were met by a smaller group of counter-demonstrators, according to the Star Tribune. Scuffles erupted and six counter-protesters were arrested, the newspaper reported.
In Nashville, Tennessee, Trump supporters and counter-protesters cursed at each other and occasionally made physical contact, but state troopers broke up the fighting, according to the city’s public radio station.
Most rallies appeared to take place without any disruption or violence, like one outside the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing.
“How can anyone be disappointed with bringing back jobs? And he promised he would secure our borders, and that’s exactly what he’s doing,” said Meshawn Maddock, one of the organizers of the rally which drew about 200 people.
Brandon Blanchard, 24, among a small group of anti-Trump protesters, said he had come in support of immigrants, Muslims and transgender people, groups that have been negatively targeted by Trump’s rhetoric and policies.
“I feel that every American that voted for Trump has been deceived,” Blanchard said.
More than 200 supporters of the president rallied in downtown San Diego.
“After this, I think people will take the hint,” said former U.S. Marine David Moore, 42, a participant in the rally. “It’s okay to voice support for the president and the country.”
In Palm Beach, Florida, where Trump is staying this weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort, the president’s motorcade stopped and Trump stepped outside his car to wave at a crowd of dozens of supporters. A smaller group of protesters stood across the street.
In New York, about 200 people demonstrated their support for the president in front of Trump Tower in midtown Manhattan. In Washington, about 150 people marched from the Washington Monument to Lafayette Square in front of the White House to show their support for the president.

In addition, you'll probably find us handy if you ever want to withhold private contact details when completing test surveys and registration forms. Our data is provided to us by Tallahassee industry regulators, communications providers, and local authorities. Fake phone numbers randomly generated by Fake Number are unallocated numbers that telephony companies cannot assign to Tallahassee customers under current legislation. This is to protect residents against the potential influx of phone calls that they may receive should their telephone numbers appear in a movie or film. Were you to make up a random Tallahassee phone number yourself, there is a high chance of your number ending up being valid. However, with Fake Number's free and ethical service, you can have full confidence that all generated Tallahassee telephone numbers are indeed 100% non-working. If you're still not convinced about how we can help, you should read up on the makers of 2003 film 'Bruce Almighty' using 776-2323 as a number to call God, which resulted in nuisance calls across many areas. Please note that the use of any fake telephone numbers generated by Fake Number does not imply that the resulting Tallahassee number has been allocated. It should also be remembered that whilst these random phone numbers will not be assigned for use by telephony companies in the foreseeable future, there is no guarantee that this situation will remain unchanged forever. Ultimately, ensuring that there is sufficient numbering capacity available to meet future requirements for 'real' Tallahassee telephony purposes is likely to be of greater priority.Generate Number By
