16h on a train to Budapest is not surprising since Hungarian railways are shit and they're not going to get any better because nobody's gonna pay for it - not the EU, not China and certainly not the Hungarian government.
I've read an article by some masochistic journalist who decided to take the train from Warsaw to Paris, with a mandatory transfer in Berlin because the local railway authority is full of shit. Such an escapade will take about 15 hours and cost as much as just taking a plane - both train tickets and an Air France plane ticket are roughly €300 while WizzAir costs half that.
And while we're at the Polish railway authority being full of shit, I'm wondering how the practical use of the Rail Baltica line from Warsaw to Tallinn will look, because right now the entire clusterfuck of a 1000-kilometer trip takes about 16 hours by bus (for only €50, luckily) or twice that by train with multiple transfers. I mean, sure, they're building a whole European-width rail line that would connect Warsaw, Vilnius, Riga, Tallinn and potentially Helsinki, but best of luck sorting out the bureaucracy in four countries to even allow a single train to travel the entire length of it if Poland routinely refuses to let in foreign train companies for bullshit reasons like the lack of a single CYA or some circular logic fuckery that the local companies (all more or less state-owned) are exempt from.
You shouldn’t date or become serious friends/partners with someone if you can’t stomach the thought of being stuck in a car or train with them for 16 hours.

1994 was just yesterday you might say. But it is thirty years ago...Who would have thought
Join me on the same train journey from Clapham to Waterloo 30 years apart and just look at the change to the London skyline. Which journey would you prefer?

Railway termini are our gates to the glorious and the unknown. Through them we pass out into adventure and sunshine, to them, alas! we return.

Inside Budapest's abandoned train graveyard !
The Abadoned facility in Istvántelek, known as the "Red Star Train Graveyard," spans a vast area below Budapest. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the complex was initially a repair workshop for the Hungarian State Railways. Despite the passage of time, many machines still stand here under the open sky, accelerating their corrosion and decay.
In this mysterious location, you can find over 100 trains covered in thick layers of rust. Some of these machines were silent witnesses to human tragedy—there are still trains here that the Germans used to transport Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz.
This neglected railway workshop, which has become a kind of cemetery of history, is now an unusual tourist attraction. It should be remembered that it was originally planned to restore the exhibits gathered here, but a lack of funds caused the project to be abandoned.
Among them, you can see several Hungarian steam locomotives, such as the 301,000-pound MAV 424, with its characteristic red stars that gave the place its name. There is also the MAV 301 from 1911-1914, one of two such specimens that have survived to this day. The graveyard area also includes newer machines from the Soviet era—in some carriages, you can still find train tickets from the 1960s.
