i have to say its a strange experience taking classes on branding and marketing while being vehemently anticapitalist and scorning the economic system
#i shit you not ill be in class and theyre talking abt how to make brands memorable and use words to describe their tone and feel#and at the same time i see starbucks endorsing genocide and greedflation and AI techbros scheming us into extinction#its extremely fucking dystopian. and its even worse when u have teachers telling u to use chatGPT and midjourney for#placeholder text and images. like damn. this is really the industry im going into huh#i feel complicit doing this because i want to pursue graphic design but its chilling to see ppl get really worked up abt branding#do u not feel used?? doesnt it feel like youre giving a faceless entity a mask to gloss over the ugly parts?? cuz i do#i get excited at the design and UX aspect of things like how people think and how design and user interfaces are planned around how#we think and act. but when the endgoal becomes marketing or doing it for companies it just feels like a waste#like i think this is what bill watterson meant when he didnt want calvin and hobbes to be commercialized#i dont want to do anything else unless it comes to that like i change my career path somewhere down the line. but fuck dude#im just gonna keep using unsplash and lorem ipsum as much as i can because i sure as hell dont wanna add to the problem if i cant solve it#yapping#vent

thinking about the person i could have been if i tried a little harder to find my own way
#probably the thing i am resenting my parents for right now is how good they were at convincing me#not to pursue any career paths other than the ones they laid out#every time i was like hey this seems interesting should i check it out? they would be so quick with the#do you care enough about it to stake your livelihood on it? to do it for your whole working life?#and obviously 8 yo 12 yo 14 yo 17 yo 18 yo me would get terrified and go no sorry and just not look into anything further#supposedly this is the safe option but everything i do feels meaningless#all of the jobs in this field seem meaningless#the job market in this field right now is dog shit and I'm fighting like hell for positions that just make me sad to think about#but every time i think hey what if i tried another thing#now my brain shuts me down with the do you care enough about it to stake your livelihood on it#your whole life on it#and the answer is no and it's gonna be no for a long time i bet#don't know if I'll ever find my way out of it#told my roommate's boyfriend about my general dispassion for pretty much everything in life#he asked me if I'm even a person#which feels very true#i feel like this path I've followed if i keep following it#I'm not going to be a person i can be proud of#i know it's really early in my life to say but#idk if it's nature or nurture or my own damn fault but all the ambition has been weaned out of me and I've been getting just surviving#i just wish i got told more you can be whatever you want to be :)#instead of whatever you'll do you'll be good at so do what makes money and push your hobbies to the side you can do them after you retire#your mom likes this and you're good at it so you'll like it too it'll make you money this is the best thing#the other thing is harder and doesn't make as much money don't do that you won't like it that much i bet#when i was younger#maybe I'd be struggling more but I'd be really happy and fulfilled#or maybe this is genuinely the best timeline and eggs who tried to pursue art hates it now#maybe I'd be really stupid at all the other things i gave a passing glance at#eggsistential speaks#tag rant

"Why aren't I getting comissions 😩" well you see. Unfortunately it is because you are not very good at art. And then you're attempting to peddle said bad art. My sincerest apologies
#This is not saying if you can't get commissions it automatically means you're bad at art#There are very good artists who just struggle to find an audience. Engagement alone means nothing#I'm specifically talking about an unfortunately frequent occurrence where I see a collection of not-good to honestly embarrassing art#And then underneath is ''taking comissions! 8/8 spots open'' and I'm like. Yeah I uhh wonder why#maybe it's cause you decided to try and make some kind of career in a very competitive market... while producing what my 13-year-old cousin#doodles on the flipside of her math homework. Sorry man. RIP#Yes yes make bad art humans are made to create etc etc just. that doesn't mean you should be an artist professionally!#If you're not good at art I'm sorry but maybe that's not the career path for you 🤷🏻♀️ since. Yknow. You're trying to sell art.

Sometimes I wonder what my life would be like if I didn't switch out of engineering after my freshman year of college. I could've been a computer & electrical engineer.
Or if I'd pursued my middle school interest in architecture (that I still lowkey have). I used to draw floor plans just for the fun of it. I think it might've originated from building in the sims, bc I recently did a massive build in the sims 2 after years and years without playing, and I was having the time of my Life. I ended up deciding to pursue engineering in high school tho bc there's a family history to it (my grandpa was one, my sister is one, my dad studied it before dropping out of college, & my ex step grandpa was one too). Also it pays better lol.
But what if I didn't give it up? I could've been an architect. Just the other day I found out from European friends that their buildings don't tend to have ventilation systems built into the walls & I went on a whole nerd research binge learning about how European buildings have air circulation (it generally varies by region, colder climates often having ventilation systems while warmer climates often just get air circulation from windows). Yeah, the architecture interest is still there.
If I go Real far back, little me wanted to be a nurse lol. But that was just because my mom was one and I still looked up to her. I've long since accepted I wouldn't be able to make it as a nurse (I'm too squeamish + tend to get attached easily, so i think it'd be pretty soul crushing for me to work in a job where patients do die sometimes)
Idk. I'm close to finishing my degree in IT, so my general life path is pretty set. And it just has me wondering about the different jobs I've wanted throughout my life & what things would be like if I went to that instead.
#speculation nation#theres also the computer science thing but that dream died as soon as i took the intro class lol. IT is just better for me.#anyways this isnt me regretting my choices. i think IT major with a communication minor is a solid choice.#should give me plenty of job opportunities. and it's something i find at least passively enjoyable.#(i dont enjoy work. but theres work that feels ok to do and work that feels like nails on chalkboard. i found smth that's okay for me to do)#it's just like. i know im ALSO not nailed down in this for life. if i truly end up wanting to change i could eventually go back to school.#but at least for now. i need to settle down. get a job. get money. achieve stability. and this is the most direct path to accomplish it.#i think i couldve been a good engineer. i heard it also got better after the first year. i HATED first year engineering#but it was a drop-out year. weeding out the 'weak'. you know. ultimately tho i just did not like it. and so im not an engineer.#honestly i think i'd still enjoy being an architect. but from what i can see online the median salary is about $82k#which is certainly not NOTHING. but median IT salary is about $104k#certainly wont make that just starting out. but i could make it someday. and that $20k more sounds Pretty alluring...#plus also the variability in the job market. *every* company needs an IT department.#my data governance professor recently said that we in IT are the heart of the company. the company cannot run without us.#so maybe it's not as cool of work as being an engineer. and maybe it's not as personally interesting as being an architect.#but i do like the field that i chose. and i hope to have a good and successful career in it.#just gotta finish school first lol

Building An Online Presence
Embarking on a writing career signals the start of an exciting adventure. However, before you can captivate an audience with your words, you must first be visible to them. Building an online presence is critical. This digital footprint makes you searchable and accessible to potential readers, clients, and collaborators. Let’s explore some essential steps to establish your online identity.
Creating A Professional Writer’s Website
Your writer’s website is your professional portfolio, storefront, and business card all in one. Here are key elements to include:
Home Page: An inviting welcome with your picture and tagline.
About Page: Your story, experience, and why you write.
Portfolio: Samples of your work, neatly categorized.

Blog: Your thoughts and updates to keep visitors engaged.
Ensure your website is clean, navigable, and mobile-friendly. Use a straightforward domain name, preferably yourname.com
Social Media Strategies For Writers

Choose platforms that align with your brand and target audience. Post consistently, engage with followers, and showcase your writing style. Creating valuable content tailored to each platform can grow your followers and elevate your professional status.
Navigating The World Of Publishing
Embarking on a writing journey is thrilling! Entering the publishing world can be intimidating, but it need not be daunting. With some guidance, you can navigate this arena with confidence. Here’s how to understand your options and pitch your work properly, bringing you closer to your dream of becoming a published author.
Understanding Different Publishing Options
Before diving into the publishing lakes, you must know the types of waters. Traditional publishing involves established houses with rigorous selection processes. They often provide thorough support but expect high-quality manuscripts.
Self-publishing grants more control over your content and faster turnaround but requires self-marketing.
Last, hybrid publishing blends both, offering flexibility with some professional services.
Writing Queries And Pitching To Publishers
Once you’re set on a publishing route, create a striking query letter or book proposal. A concise query letter is a gold key to an editor’s attention. Start with a snappy introduction, an overview of your work, your bio, and the reason you think they’re the perfect fit for your manuscript. Remember, a well-crafted pitch sets the stage for your writing journey.
Highlight the uniqueness of your story.
Include a captivating hook to garner interest.
Show off your market awareness and target audience.
Maintain a professional tone throughout.
Ensure the letter is error-free and flawlessly formatted.
Embrace this new chapter with an informed, proactive stance. With consistency and perseverance, you’re sure to make waves in the publishing world!
