Sylvester Turner, Sworn In as U.S. Representative in January, Dies at 70

A former mayor of Houston, he was in attendance at the president’s speech on Tuesday night but was later taken to a hospital.

Sylvester Turner, a former mayor of Houston who was sworn in as a U.S. representative in January, died on Tuesday night in Washington. He was 70 and had been in attendance at the president’s speech on Capitol Hill.

His death was announced on Wednesday morning by John Whitmire, who succeeded him as mayor of Houston.

Mr. Turner, a Democrat, was a veteran of Texas politics. He served in the State Legislature from 1989 to 2016, when he became mayor of Houston. He served two terms before leaving office in January 2024.

Republican Refers to Transgender Lawmaker as a Man, Halting House Hearing

A Republican lawmaker cut short a House hearing on Tuesday after misgendering Representative Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress.

During a session of the Europe Subcommittee of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Chairman Representative Keith Self of Texas introduced McBride by mistakenly calling her “Mr. McBride.”

While McBride has generally chosen to ignore such slights, she briefly addressed the error, responding with “Thank you, Madam Chair” before continuing with her remarks.

However, Representative William Keating of Massachusetts, the subcommittee's ranking Democrat, was not willing to let the mistake pass. He interrupted the proceedings, asking Self to repeat the introduction. Self again referred to McBride as “Mr. McBride,” prompting Keating to take further action, leading to the hearing being abruptly adjourned. Read More.....
