Ooh! I like that idea but also part of me thinks he also listens to Nicki Minaj or Cardi B or Doja Cat because he 100% is a pop fan cuz he’s very romantic and petty but also because we all saw that incense burner chapter. ☾ Lan Wangji's names etymology

Here's a complete post on the etymology of our beloved Lan Wangji's various names. I've always appreciated how authors would give out names that fit their characters so well, which is why I chose to share this.

Birth Name - Lan Zhan 藍湛

Lan 藍 (lán) – blue. In Chinese, Lan 藍 is literally blue.

Zhan 湛 (zhàn) – clear, deep. In Chinese, Zhan 湛 from 湛蓝 (zhànlán), azure blu

Lan Zhan’s formal name Zhan 湛 means deep or clear, without impurities. It is often prefixed to the front of the word “blue” to describe the color of sunny cloudless skies, azure. Wangji’s birth name 湛 (zhàn) derives from the 诗经 (Classic of Poetry), one of the Chinese ‘Five Classics’ dating back to the Zhou Dynasty and a core pillar of Confucian thinking, studied by scholars to this day. The common meanings of this word are “deep” or “crystal clear”. The phrase 湛清 (zhànqīng) is often used to describe a transparent personality or state of mind that is in its purest form, with no distractions or obscurities. The name is really perfect for Wangji, as the phrase 湛深 (zhànshēn) can be used to describe a person displaying profound knowledge and/or mastery of skills in a complex field. 精湛 (jingzhàn) also means to be deeply proficient and skilled at something, normally used to address masters and pioneers. Interestingly, 湛 has another pronunciation, dān, which means “happiness” or “indulgence”. A third, rarer way of pronouncing the word is chén, which means “to sink” or “to make extinct”. I think the multifaceted nature of the character 湛 perfectly embodies the deep and complicated being that resides within Wangji.

Birth name is rarely used by anyone other than close family members, teachers, and elders in the family, clan, or sect. Using it implies either a certain type of intimacy or a certain type of seniority over the person being spoken to. Side Note: The fact that Wei Wuxian addresses Lan Wangji as Lan Zhan so early on in their acquaintance would be considered rude.

Courtesy Name - Lan Wangji 忘機

Wangji 忘机 (wàngjī) – to be free of worldly concerns (a Daoist phrase) Wang 忘 means to forget. It may have negative connotations in English because it’s associated with a passive disease and loss of treasured memories. In Chinese, actively forgetting can also be a positive renunciation of worldly troubles, so the character is somewhat more romantic than an English speaker would assume. Ji 機 / 机 is typically used in common speech to refer to machines, mechanical things, opportunities, and worldly things that have many parts intricately connected with each other. In more metaphysical discussions, it implies the intertwined destinies and sophistication of the mundane. To forget the secular calculations and intricacies of the world is to live freely and without distractions; as an antonym of precision, it has heavy Taoist flavors because of its seclusive connotations.

There’s an interesting story behind Lan Wangji’s name. It comes from the last line of a poem by acclaimed Chinese poet Li Bai. The sentence reads “我醉君复乐 陶然共忘机” (wǒ zuì jūn fù lè, táo rán gòng wàng jī), which translates to “I become drunk and you’re merry; in our happiness we forget about all worldly matters”. In my mind, this scene perfectly brings to life Xianxian enjoying a jar of Emperor’s Smile with Wangji in the Cloud Recesses after his resurrection when he is no longer concerned with the vanities of the world. “Wangji” is a Taoist phrase that means “to hold oneself aloof from the world”. The direct translation is “to forget about worldly crafts”. Chinese fans often describe him as “一尘不染” (meaning not be soiled with even a particle of dust) and “不食人间烟火” (a Taoist phrase now used to describe a person who has otherworldly qualities, who does not associate himself with ordinary temporal matters).

The courtesy name, in The Untamed, is given early on. In many wuxia/xianxia novels, characters don’t receive their courtesy name until they are adults. This is a name friends, acquaintances, and peers (those of equal standing) use.

Title - Hanguang Jun 含光君

Hanguang Jun 含光君 (Hánguāng-jūn) 含 (hán) – to hold, to bring 光 (guāng) – light 君 (jūn) – honorific for a gentleman or man or noble character

Hanguang Jun is a title that praises Lan Zhan’s integrity. Jun 君 is a character (literally “lord”) with multiple meanings, but here it is attached to the end of a name to show respect. Wangji’s title directly translates to “noble bearer of light”. 含光 (hánguāng) is also the name of one of three of the most powerful swords in Chinese history/mythology, said to have been under the care of Shang Dynasty emperors. Its blade is described to be invisible, and a mortal cannot see it being wielded with their bare eyes. Later interpretations during the Warring States period described the three swords as symbolic stages of a person’s journey to finding the Taoist path, with Han Guang being the final stage of ‘preparedness to enter the Way’ (入道合体之状). The characters HanGuang 含光 separately and literally mean “hold/envelops light”, and in the novel, it is taken from a widely circulated legend about several of the main characters, which specifically goes like this about Lan Zhan: 景行含光藍忘機 (JingXing HanGuang Lan WangJi). The first two characters are taken from an ancient collection of poems, and describe a person of upright and faultless disposition. The next two characters, Han Guang, refer to a harboring of light. For me, it’s not the light part that’s interesting, but the state of harboring that defines the most significant cultural nuances. It is (or at least was) considered a form of virtue in China if you don’t flaunt your brightness in other people’s eyes; so the polite thing to do, if you’re brilliant as flames, is to shield that light so you aren’t so in-your-face about it.

The title is just what it says on the box. It is used to express respect, but also a certain amount of distance.  Side Note: The young disciples of the Gusu Lan call Lan Wangji Hanguang-Jun because it would be disrespectful for them to address him as Lan Wangji, as they are not of equal standing. When Wei Wuxian returns from the Burial Mounds, he addresses Lan Wangji as Hanguang-Jun because he wants to distance himself from their earlier intimacy to prevent being questioned about his methods. 

Extra thought:

I must give props to Lan Wangji’s actor Wang Yibo. Early reactions from the Chinese audience had some unfavorable reviews that criticized his lack of facial expressions, but later retracted their opinions, because they realized that he was actually doing a superb job with his eyes and his body, considering the limitations. The script gives him very few lines in most episodes. You can see how he looks directly at anyone in the eye unless he’s about to kill you, or (later on) if you’re Wei Ying. If you don’t know him well, he seems unconfrontational with those cold shielded eyes, but as soon as you step over the line (sometimes a line named Wei Ying), you’ll feel the sharpness of that fierce light in his eyes like a blade to your throat. Just ask Fairy the spiritual dog...

Wei Wuxian was always adamant that Lan Wangji is not allowed to drink with anyone except him around. He was so intense about it that a running bet starts with the juniors and other clans disciples on just what the Second Jade of Lan is like when drunk.

What is it that Wei Wuxian doesn't want anyone else to see? How bad could he really be when drunk? Even the Junior's who were there when Lan Wangji walked Wei Wuxian around with his ribbon tied around his wrists aren't entirely sure.

Everyone finds out during a discussion conference when Lan Wangji accidentally drinks out of Wei Wuxian's cup.

Suffice to say, giving Lan Wangji any type or amount of alcohol was immediately banned from there on.

Everything Is Coming Together… And Falling Apart | Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation is a wild ride. Books one and two set up a lot of information and book three lacked a lot of action to keep me invested. I have been waiting for something shocking to happen, either with the plot progression or with Wangji and Wuxian’s relationship, and welp, I got all of that and more in book four. This volume was well worth the wait! Not only do we get the events of the Burial Mound and the small victory for Wei Wuxian to prove he is not the mastermind behind this. But, we got the brain imploding reveal that Wei Wuxian not using his sword is not because he’s an egotistical asshole, but because be has no spiritual energy to properly wield the weapon. The fact that Wei Wuxian gave up his golden core for the 50% chance that it could be transferred to Jiang Cheng shows just how caring Wuxian is.

Starting off in the middle of the second siege of the Burial Mound, tensions run high as nobody knows who they can trust. Wei Wuxian is common enemy number one, but is backed by the trustworthy and honorable Lan Wangji. Su She is a no-good cultivator who left his original clan only to carry with him the secrets and techniques to his new clan. Those cultivators who climbed up the mountain to destroy Wei Wuxian surly had so much hatred in their hearts after they had to crawl into the Yiling Patriarchs cave for protection. Getting saved by Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning was a huge slap in the face to all of them.

This volume was full of anguish through and through. The never ending tension between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian could be cut with a knife, I have officially given up on any type of reconciliation of their friendship at this point. Returning to Lotus Pier after the catastrophe of the Burial Mound attack and seeing the budding relationship between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji was clearly too much for Jiang Cheng who sees himself as the victim who lost nearly everything and must live seeing the cause of his downfall flaunt his good fortune in his home. The fight in the Ancestral Home seems to be the final straw in the friendship.

The discovery that Wei Wuxian no longer has a Golden Core because he underwent surgery to transplant it to Jiang Cheng was the most shocking piece of information. Knowing how much Wei Wuxian cares about his family (his excitement about his sister getting married and the life of her child, the disappointment of not being able to actually attend events for Jin Ling, and the guilt over the deaths) and seeing how terribly his relationship ends up with Jiang Cheng, someone who he views as a brother, is incredibly sad to see. Knowing what he went through in order to help Jiang Cheng be able to cultivate, you can see that he is selfless for those he cares about. Going through excruciating pain for the (less than) fifty percent chance of this procedure working. This led to Wei Wuxian only being able to cultivate the demonic path in order to have any type of power. He can no longer use his sword, and he is forever left to be hated by those around him for trying to save those he believes should not be killed for the acts of a few who happen to share their name.

The entire last section between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji was such a trip. Having both of them tense from the fight with Jiang Cheng and sharing a room was a recipe for disaster. A drunk Lan Wangji is a chaotic force of nature. Stealing chickens and fruit, drawing on the walls with his sword, and breaking a bathtub. The upset emotions are showing so clearly in his drunken state. Lan Wangji wants to show off that ha can be fun too, that he can be reckless like Wei Wuxian’s stories.

Having things escalate in the bathtub and carry over the line on the bed was probably the worst timing for this to happen. Both were upset and stress with everything that was happening at the time. Lan Wanji gets less filtered and proper when drunk, so he let those inner thoughts come out full force. Wei Wuxian has admitted his feelings and longing for Lan Wangji and is taken over by his emotions once pulled into the bathtub. Both have a sweeping realization after the act is done, neither of them know what the other was thinking, or how they feel about what just happened between them. The tense awkward atmosphere is the end of any type of comfort they feel with each other, leaving them thinking the other hated everything or advantage was taken.

The ending of this book is such a cliffhanger. Knowing the Wei Wuxian is having a mini mental breakdown thinking that he took advantage of Lan Wangji, he seems like he is going to go on a rampage that will result in him purposely hurting himself for the sake of mending his guilt in some way. I have no idea how this relationship will find common ground so they can talk everything out. I have no idea how the events of book five will play out, this ending is so open and there are still multiple points in this story that need to be wrapped up, so I feel like these last 400 pages are going to be even more hard hitting.

Wen Ning, his best friend since high school, never lied to him and Wei WuXian believes him with a breath, but still too unreal, even for Jiang Cheng that never showed the type of pearson that would spread lies like some desesperate ex-husband.

Maybe Wei WuXian was too naive and never knew Jiang Cheng that well.

Wen Ning, "He also said to his sister that your marriage was the worst mistake."

That one was true: His marriage to Jiang Cheng was made by Madame Yu, who forced Wei WuXian to be his son's "perfect servant and wife" so he never would go away. They actually never worked, as much as Wei WuXian tried to, but Jiang Cheng never was helpfull, always busy or put a lot of complains on his back.

It was a matter of time since Wei WuXian's first affair with Lan WangJi happened.

He was tired and Lan WangJi was one of his best friends, even if they couldn't see eachother after the marriage. Lan WangJi was, and still, a gentleman, intelligent, caring and beatifull.

One day, after Lan WangJi getting drunk for the first time, Wei WuXian drove him to his appartment, bathed him and tried to be calm while his friend was looking at him with a weird look.

He was acting cute and Wei WuXian couldn't help but kiss him, deeply while a desire burned his chest, but when he opened hus eyes he jumped away, with a lot of guilty eating his insides

But then they talked after a few months, became friends and everything was good. Until Lan WangJi kissed him and they slept together, so how Jiang Cheng never tried anything, that was his first experience.

He knew he was in the wrong for cheating on Jiang Cheng, but spreading rumours about him wasn't necessary since everyone already knew the cheat by Jiang Cheng himself and everyone cursed Wei WuXian.

Wei WuXian sighs, "I knew he is dating someone else, i just hope he is doing well."

Wen Ning, "...mn."

Wei WuXian, "You don't need to make this face, is fine, i will just be happy having Lan Zhan, A'Yuan and our family together.", streaching his back, he looked at his cellphone., "Let's go get A'Yuan on school, i told YanLi-Jie i would visit today."

Wen Ning, "But Jiang Wanying..."

Wei WuXian, "Jie said he is having a date today, it will be quick i promise.", he yelled, "Lan Zhan! I m going to YanLi-Jie's house!"

Special mention to drunk Lan Wangji scenes. I like when he just bops Wen Ning on the head with Bichen.

3. Shen Qingqiu dragging Luo Binghe through the Holy Mausoleum and finding the Huan Hua Palace Master. Specifically, Shen Qingqiu calmly blowing away the plants and making sure none of them land on Binghe and then the reveal that the plants take root inside of people, under their skin, with the more qi they use.

2. Luo Binghe baiting Shen Qingqiu to reveal himself in his plant / mushroom body by taking the sect as a whole hostage.

1. The reveal that Luo Binghe is merging the human and deamon realms together, after they all thought it was Tianlang-jun’s doing. His whole speech about Shen Qingqiu choosing him.

Special mention to the extras where Binghe cries to convince Shen Qingqiu to let him have sex with him. (It reminds me of Tian Ye Ke and Wen Kexing crying to make Zhou Zishu let him do him. Wen Kexing and Luo Binghe would hate each other and compare notes and I think that’s wonderful)

So we have a Wei Wuxian who's apparently missing some of his memory, and Lan Wangji who apparently was confined to his keep and badly punished for something, and Lan Wangji is silently super possessive of Wei Wuxian (glaring at the waiter getting all chummy with him for example), and Lan Wangji is drunk and WWX *just* said he wasn't the type to lie on top of that so. So.

There is a lot that hasn't yet been revealed in WWX's past; the audience at this point doesn't know exactly how he became universally reviled, what inciting incident made him a target, and though we got a glimpse of the time he spent with the Lan clan in his youth, we haven't seen much outside of that.

I might be misreading this but between what few spoilers I do know along with all the dropped hints in the novel, I'm guessing Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are secretly wed and this information was somehow erased from WWX's memory. It makes too much sense, especially considering how comfortable Lan Wangji is with Wei Wuxian in the present, when in the past he "hated to be touched" and would jump to fighting if the teasing got too flirty.

So Wangji pines for him as always and they have this ball (?) or a party I guess and limited to only the vampires but Wei Ying is invited. Lan Wangji gets drunk and Wei Ying tries to take him back to his dorm but like they detour because they're horny and Lan Wangji bites his thighs and then the next day he relaizes that Wei Ying is half vampire I guess. But somehow Qiren is shitty because he hides the truth about Wangji's parents and he tries to stop Wei Ying and Lan Wangji but they run away from the cultivation world like how Baodhan Sanren and Lan Yi ran away. Because apparently same sex marriages aren't okay in their society. Also Madam Yu also whips Wei Wuxian when she gets to know he's half vampire and Fengmian was keeping Wei Ying so he could gain advantage at some point. 7. Since you found me exactly what i was looking for I came back with two more fics and to say thanks for finding the two i requested the first time.

A) So the first fic i want to request is one where wangxian time travel and at first they think its only them but later on in the story its revealed that because of something they did lan xichen, nie huaisang and jiang cheng also come back. but near the beginning of the story lan wangji helps madam lan escape and she goes to lotus pier and turns out she knows madam yu and qinghengjun comes out of seclusion i belive cause when they go to the lectures he and madam lan reunite and then our timetravels tell them what happens and there are multiple training dummies that are destroyed by madam yu and jiang yanli

B) the second fic is where after canon ends i belive almost everyone but wangxian and a’yuan were dead but a’yuan was making his way to deaths door but wei wuxian used this array or talisman yo send them back thousands of years and a’yuan reverts to his child self and wei wuxian and lan wangji get to raise him but eventualy become immortal or already were and i dont know if a’yuan becomes immortal or not but it doesnt really mention him at all after that except a brief passing. As the years pass wei wuxian and lan wangji travel and meet a lot of people including their parents and baoshan sanren. it time skips i belive and its after the lectures(?) and the sects are invited to the burial mounds where a whole bunch of relevant but not totally relevent people are, along with wei wuxian and lan wangji as their immortal sect leaders and the sects read the books but it doesnt actually show that part and madam meng and madam jin meet and at first madam jin is standoffish but eventually get to know each other, i dont know anything after that, most like where the last update was.

A) i think this first one may be a burial mounds days canon divergent fic wherein lwj either comes to stay, or keeps coming back, but that’s just my vague impression. i only remember one scene! lwj is meditating, and a’yuan, sweetheart that he is, sits down with him and copies him. i remember lwj thinking that a’yuan is doing well for such a small kid, he lasts much longer than expected without fidgeting or losing concentration. afterwards he says that he was pretending to be a cloud, i think?? and when lwj (or maybe wwx?) asks him how he feels he says, “Fluffy!” (it’s tbh one of the most adorable scenes ever)

B) second one is an ‘lwj takes a’yuan and jingyi and leaves the lan sect’ joint. i think he leaves bc the elders and teachers are treating a’yuan badly, and lqr is maybe refusing to let lwj adopt him? lwj takes jingyi as well bc he’s a’yuan’s bf and an orphan, and is also kind of shunned and ill treated since he doesn’t conform easily to lan standards. pretty sure lwj tells both kids to call him father once they’ve left, and that they spend the first day or two travelling fast so they won’t be caught, and sleeping rough. i think maybe there was a scene with the kids cleaning up in a river and playing, and lwj being grateful that they feel safe enough to play and make noise… and that’s all i’ve got! i may be completely wrong abt the details, but thank you guys for taking the time to read my rambling. if anyone recognizes either of these i will be so grateful :)

There are other players in this tournament, of course, but everyone knows who the favorites are. In fact, they themselves know too. And agree for a friendly game before the competition.

It's safe to say it's intense. There's sexual chemistry from the moment they sit down, and the flirting and heckling Wei Ying does is charged with a lot of something else. And he can definitely see it in Lan Wangji's otherwise neutral expression too.
