What's, in your opinion, the most fitting song on the CoCaL playlit???

Eeeeeeeeee okay sorry I took so so so long to try to answer this lol. I keep thinking about an answer then I'd forgot to actually respond and I also keep forgetting I made that playlist cause I for sure have more songs to add to it by now!!

I actually still don't think I can pick a song for this question, somewhat cause I'm very indecisive but also because I did pick a lot of songs to focus on different specific stories. By know there's so many backstories for each character and plenty of OC lore that it's all branched out! CoCaL is made up of a bunch of solitary tales that eventually intertwine into a whole.

"Egg and Soldier", "Sleeping Giants", and "Passerine" are so so so good for the war trio and their story. "Inkpot Gods", and "Dear Arkansas Daughter" fit into the complicated feelings between Nastya and Jonny deliciously for me. "Beauty", and "A Place by a Lake" make me go insane over the royal trouple OCs. I think "White Rabbit" wound up there for Ivy, and "Sweet Bod" and "Cicada Days" for Raphaella. A handful of silly tracks gifted to my favorite sillies Toy and Marius, like "See You Tomorrow", "Like Ships", and "The Wind and The Rain".

There ARE plenty of fun tracks I picture for the general main storyline though, like all the Beauty and The Beast tracks and "Interdimensional". So yummy.........

I'd also mention that I can go into detail about any of songs, which I still can, but uuummmm admittedly some of the songs I picked out to put in there I forgot why I put in there lol.

she's singing in another room and my dog is asleep at my feet. my grandma asked me why i haven't found a man yet and i laughed. oh, you know. i like my house clean.

my girlfriend is also my man is also "my partner" if i'm in a professional setting. yesterday we went to a ren faire and a man mimed at me - you're together? and at my delighted nod, his baffled, you're gay? made me laugh. a woman with rainbow hair said i love the two of you together. you're both so beautiful it's absurd.

my dad introduced my partner as my "..... friend. or whatever" the other day. he knows we're dating. in the same way, i was never able to get my sister's husband to stop saying that's gay like it's 2008. he still uses the word fa***t, and my sister's defense of him has always been well, he's just kidding.

my lover and i dance to old music in a tiny kitchen. we judge new music together and take food critique very seriously. we watch love is blind before we fall asleep and agree that if they had a queer season, it would be bloody but also make for excellent tv. of fucking course queer people would know someone for only 2 weeks and agree to get married. what are you saying.

at a bar with friends, a man puts his hand on my wrist. got a boyfriend? and yes, i do have a boyfriend, she's amazing. i am texting her while i wander around a gas station named after geese. i am visiting a swing state for a wedding. in the candy aisle i overhear: she's actually like a lesbian it's disgusting. two teenage girls with packaged sandwiches in their hands, giggling. no literally, like. i'm not, like. okay with her being there while we're all, like, naked and changing.

my girlfriend and i tailgate, drink gin and cider out of cups. from the frat group beside us, a man corrects himself with one of his friends: bro, i mean, nonbinary entity, and it makes everyone around him laugh, myself included. he razzes his friend the same way i would have killed for at 19 years old - like nothing happened, he continues: you apply sunscreen like an alien. he does a little sassy (and fairly accurate) dance interpretation of the motion. his friend is laughing so hard they're crying.

i am lucky, i live in a safe neighborhood in a safe state. my masc passenger princess comes up from DC. i drive her for an hour to where all the leaves are a violent arrangement of color. we walk along the trails, letting autumn into our blood. in this part of the state, there's a lot of pickup trucks and trump signs. when we chastely kiss before getting into the car, i accidentally make eye contact with a woman holding her child's wrist. she looks disgusted. she looks fucking pissed.

two hours later my girl and i are eating dinner on a patio, soaking in the last warmth of new england sun before the chill of winter sets in. we are giggling and trying to talk through plastic vampire teeth. at another table, i see a young woman sit up straighter. i watch her watch us. she blushes and takes her partner's hand from across the table. shy, like the taste of evening has just become something deeper.

it's worth it for this moment, i think. my lover is still humming the same song she's been singing for four days straight and i don't want to kill her for it. her guitar is beside my bed. her toothbrush is in my bathroom. in a few moments i will make us lunch. we are lucky enough to have found each other. it is lucky enough to be in love.

Oh geez, Mare, this one's a good one! It's making me think (if you smell smoke, that's probably why 😅). But here it goes...the answers! (The fic, for reference, is The Wanderer)

I think my very favorite thing about this one is that it's my first exploration of a not-so-happy ending for the OC. In the past, even with villain/OC pairings, I'd always sort of zeroed in on a redemption arc for the villain, the OC basically maintaining her 'goodness' throughout, and then of course after the redemption of the villain, they live happily ever after, have a few kids, the end. This, by contrast, is almost exactly the opposite. The OC will compromise her morals as the story goes on. The consequences of her choices (ie staying with our villain) will cost her dearly. And in the end, said villain (Sauron) is absolutely not redeemed. Not even a little bit. It's going to be dark. The relationship is absolutely toxic. And I'm giddy to really dive into the nitty-gritty of exploring it as it grows!

My second favorite thing, I think, is that, prior to meeting Sauron (and what a nail in her coffin that is), my OC is just an ordinary girl. No noble bloodline, no special powers, not even any real skill in battle despite being thrown head-first into one. She's got grit, and boldness, and a healthy dash of reckless energy, sure. But more often than not, at least for a good chunk of the beginning of her story, it's dumb luck, or other people that pull her out of certain situations, not her own abilities. It's another thing that I'm kind of exploring for the first time (as opposed to the OC who is born into advantageous positions, or equipped with some power that enables them with an advantage, which I usually gravitated to, before).

The third thing, I think, is that while I've read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and seen the films, I have not yet managed to sit down and dive into The Silmarillion (I know, Tolkien-lovers, the audacity of me! lol). For this (and really, for my other WIPs for Rings of Power, as well), I kind of need to, though. And I fully plan to, once life settles for me a bit. Why this falls into the 'favorite thing' category, though, is that I'm not in the camp of writing about something I already know, inside and out, here. This will very much be a learning process for me, just like in the context of the story, adjusting to everything she's going to face will be a learning experience for my OC. So, perhaps in an extremely nerdy way, I'm just beyond grateful for the opportunity to sort of have my own journey alongside hers (though hopefully my ending will be a bit...happier 😂).

If you've ever told a person who's had to be bedbound for a period of time that you wish you could "just stay in bed", DO IT.

Stay in bed. For days. But don't get up if someone needs you to, or you get bored, or you get antsy. Don't do anything other than rest. Just lie in your bed, whether you need to get stuff done around the house or socialize or anything else "productive". You'll have to cancel on people, you'll disappoint them, they won't understand.

And if you're thinking, "well, i CAN'T just be in bed. There's stuff that has to be done - I have plans", maybe ask yourself why you assumed a disabled person doesn't have plans or things to do or desires.

fun fact about me! I have hyperadrenergic Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (hPOTS). this means I am prone to fainting when I change positions or when I feel a strong surge of emotion, positive or negative. for me, laughing is my worst non-postural trigger.

this is a clip from playing lethal company with friends a few months ago. you can hear the eerie silence of presyncope at 0:19, and the sound at 0:23 is my face hitting the keyboard lmao. i feel like not enough ppl are factoring in the cultural clash between laios and shuro and the many micro agressions shuro faced while being in their group. literally the name 'shuro' in itself is one

his name is toshiro 😭 lets also not forget that he has his own communication issues, in the opposite way that laios does- thats literally a factor in their argument, that his envy for laios's ability to express himself sincerely manifested as part of his distaste for him.

ig all this to say like, was their fight heart wrenching, especially when reading laios as autistic? absolutely. anybody whos ever been in laios's position knows how much it hurts to realize someone you thought was your friend doesnt actually like having you around, especially when they didnt tell you and you had no way of knowing due to not understanding their cues. but im begging yall to step back and see the nuance of this situation cause im gonna be real a lot of you are kinda just brushing over it acting like everything is toshiros fault and that hes a terrible person when in reality hes an average guy who really, really clashed with laios and it led to a very long misunderstanding due to their supremely opposite methods of communication. even laios and toshiro, after letting everything out in their fight, were able to come to an understanding and start a foundation for an actual friendship built on better communication

ok yknow what Edit: i shouldve made it even more explicit at the end of this post, i hadnt thought i would need to since i started the post with this, but i think a few too many people are missing my point so i just wanna clarify. i shouldnt have said 'really clashed' and left it at that because yeah they did, but it wasnt just their opposite methods of communication, it is also very much that toshiro was experiencing microaggressions via laios. it may have been unintentional on laios's part, but it still happened and wore him down, made it harder for him to communicate on top of both the more subtle social cues that he was raised with and his own communication difficulties. i also want to say that the fandom reaction to toshiro and the complete ignorance of this point is also racist tbh or at the very least ignorant. i understand that the anime did not cover this panel, and neither did the manga, as this was an omake, but im gonna be real with you guys. there are enough context clues within the story to clue you into this. if you didnt pick up on it thats ok, but i think this is a good lesson in picking up subtext in the stories that youre watching and/or reading. kui shouldnt have to explicitly say 'by the way laios was racist to toshiro' for this point to be understood, and at the very least, when the author portrays a character in a sympathetic light (as kui clearly does) it should make you question Why they are doing so and what makes them sympathetic, rather than youre immediate and only reaction to be 'well i hated what this guy did/said so i hate them and they suck'. idk exactly how to finish this, just. idk. question your biases and gut reactions to things you see in media and stories, and think about whether or not theres subtext that youre missing.
