People don’t realize how bad fandom racism is in comic books when you literally have to stop people from making Miles, a black kid, being Peter’s little sidekick when the character has been independent from the get go. When you literally expect almost every Batfamily post or content to exclude Duke Thomas, Luke Fox, And Tiffany Fox. Or not even mention Luscious. Or when characters of color get adapted into other mediums, their origins if deemed too political are immediately erased or changed when Kamala’s struggle with Islamophobia is omitted in every adaptation of the character. Or Static’s origin dealing with the Drug War just changes.

Like it gets exhausting dealing with white fans or creators who are way too willing to make a character be favorable to the white audience.

Top 8 Comics (Going into 2019)

Sadly I’m not reading enough comics right now for a top 10, but it is what it is. These are the 8 comics I’m currently reading, ranked.

8. Batman & the Outsiders  (DC)

Were this a list of the most disappointing comics of 2019, it would be at the top, rather than the bottom. No getting around it, this book is pretty shit, with the same conversations repeated over and over again, a plot that’s moving at a glacial speed and team that doesn’t feel like a team in the slightest. I really want to love this book, but the fact is if Cass weren’t in it, I would have dropped it months ago.

7. Magnificent Ms. Marvel (Marvel)

I’ve really been enjoying Ahemd’s run on Ms. Marvel. It isn’t the best book in the world, or even Ahmed’s best book right now, but since the book’s return to Earth, its been very consistent. I’m not too hot about one of the current story beats, but I’m really looking forward to the introduction of Amulet (Seen Above).

6. MMPR/TMNT (BOOM!)

Only one issue has come out so far so there isn’t much to talk about, but it was a delightful first issue, with fantastic art, great character interactions and plenty of fan-service.

5. Miles Morales: Spider-Man (Marvel)

The cream of Marvel’s crop right now, it’s everything I could want from a Miles book. The Prowler content in this book has also been a major highlight.

4. Second Coming  (Ahoy)

“I asked James to spread my word. I asked Peter to spread my word. I never even asked Paul to spread the jelly.” - Jesus Christ.

3/2. Go Go Power Rangers/ Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Without a doubt, the best ongoing comics right now are the BOOM Power Rangers books.

1. Superman Smashes the Klan (DC)

Gene Luen-Yang is the best modern comic writer. This is the best Superman story in ages. That is all.

Oh, the batboys would love Kamala. And Gotham is in New Jersey, so probably not that far from where she lives (Jersey City)! This is totally a crossover that could work! Dick especially I think would just absolutely vibe with her. Plus she and Damian could bond over being Muslim superheroes!

sorta related to what you said about people dismissing new comics, are there any new characters released in the past 5 years or so that you've genuinely enjoyed?

everyone i can think of is 5+ years but. if i had to pick one it'd definitely be duke thomas. i think he's added so much to batman comics as a whole. faira sar namora is a personal fav of mine and i miss her daily. kamala khan is another one i dont think anyone can deny the impact of.

uuuum some others: ami han, pearl pangan. i think most of the agents of atlas new characters r very neat but those 2 are my favs, somnus, runa, robbie reyes, jesse chambers uuuuhhhh there are a few others ive liked the look of but havent had the time to read anything for yet

Hello, my comic book friends!

I have a request to make, and I know there are masterlists out there, so send me those, too. BUT. I'm starting my comprehensive exams for my PhD this year, and I need to narrow down comic book titles for my reading list. I'm analyzing character and character clusters, so I'm wondering what your favorite titles (or, if not favorite, the titles you think are the most interesting) are for the following character clusters:

Kamala looked at Duke, Signal, as he coordinated the response to the Klown Kult attack. "I want any available Gotham Knights who are ready, and I want nearby JL on alert in case this is a larger attack. Medical Teams at the ready, and Mithral...." Duke switched to a cartoonish macho voice "BRING THE PAIN, QUEEN!" Kamala heard an girly cry of excitement come out of Dukes phone, as he drew his Bat-Kama and readied to attack some Clowns. "Ready for this Ms..." Duke asked, not sure what to call Kamala in costume. "Magnificient. Ms Magnificent" Kamala said, recalling the hero name she used back during her high-school vigilante days. The Signal nodded in approval, and the two leapt from their hiding place to charge the Kult menace.

Chapter 9/12: Mere Exposure Effect

Kamala had never been on an overnight stakeout before. The thought exhilarated her.

With Oracle’s help, they had located a drop site—a trailer in an empty lot—in Burnside, where the villains were projected going to meet and set up camp in an abandoned motel across the street. While Duke positioned the tripod behind the webby mesh curtains, Kamala plugged the laptop into a power strip along with their phone chargers and opened up the video chat with Oracle.

The room was empty save for a disassembled nightstand in the corner and a coffee table pushed against the wall next to a rattling radiator. Kamala had learned the hard way that the bathroom in their room didn’t work, so if they needed to use one, they had to go all the way down the hall.  

She rolled out a throw blanket onto the cold, dusty floor before tapping the keyboard. “Oracle? Can you hear me?”

“Loud and clear,” Oracle replied. “I’m looking at surveillance footage and it seems like the Rogues are busy with their own things for now. Nightwing and Robin are taking care of Mr. Freeze, the Riddler’s been stuck in traffic for the past twenty minutes, Bluebird’s dealing with the Mad Hatter, and Scarecrow hasn’t left his house yet.”

Kamala nodded and pulled a notepad out of her backpack. “So we should look out for Riddler and Scarecrow?”

“Most likely. Is everything set up?”

Kamala glanced up at Duke, who adjusted the lens one last time before giving a thumbs up. She relayed it to Oracle.

“I’m connecting to the camera’s live feed. That way you can focus on other stuff.” Oracle took a sip of her coffee. “What’s your case file named again?”

Duke answered, “HALO 2.”

She raised an eyebrow. “You named it after a video game?”

“It was a good idea in my head.”
