Identifying as Alterhuman doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as identifying as non-human. It's an alternative way of experiencing humanity, and/or having experiences that transcend or go beyond the typically recognized human construct or stereotype of experience. This could be due to neurodivergence, plurality, feeling more connected to primal human traits, etc.

Regarding having a nonhuman identity, it's very much possible to feel nonhuman by nature and on a psychological and/or spiritual level regardless of whether one also identifies as Therian, Otherkin, or any other specific nonhuman identity. One can also have a highly complex and multifaceted experience of oneself and one's identity and identity expression, or one can simply feel nonhuman. One doesn't necessarily specifically have to have any Theriotypes or Kintypes at all to identify as nonhuman. One can feel nonhuman fundamentally and either connect this feeling with being a specific species or entity or not. It's also possible for someone to just feel like...themselves, not a certain other species, but also not exactly human.

It's very much possible to identify as or with concepts, objects, archetypes, certain phenomena, etc., and not only as or with certain species or entities. It's very much possible to feel strongly like the personification or embodiment of something. I can also see how a connection to an object could be so deep that it becomes part of you in some inextricable way.

It's possible for those in a system to feel Alterhuman because being plural is considered to be outside of the social construct of what it means to be "human," as well as the fact that some systems may contain nonhuman alters. It's also possible for one to feel Alterhuman on a deep level while having Kithtypes but not any specific Kintypes. Being Kith itself is a fundamental Alterhuman identity in its own right.

One can feel deeply nonhuman on some intangible level, either wholly or partially, or feel Alterhuman, and not involve any additional labels. It's all valid.

Some may feel as though they were always meant to be a certain very specific species in both mind and bodily form, or else one can feel as though they were meant to be more anthropomorphic. One can have multiple types and feel like their types are all separate or one can feel like a hybrid or chimera or simultaneously separate and hybridized, or one can feel like all of their types are connected through symbiotic relationships, or else one can simply be without types or have types that are fluid. One can have "unusual" types and rare types.

Being Alterhuman and/or nonhuman can mean different things for different individuals, though ultimately this experience is essential to who one is and this identity and the ways one might express it should thus be honored and respected.

Rowan the Alterhuman

Hello there fellow creatures! I know I already have an intro post technically. However, I didn't really get into things all that much in that post. So this is intended to just kind of give a little more information about who I am as an alterhuman.

I'm in my 30s and I first started identifying as a therian in 2007, although I've been one all my life. I just didn't always have a term for it. I'm a Canadian timber wolf and African golden wolf therian. I began identifying as otherkin in 2010. This was back before the umbrella term "alterhuman" existed and the two communities were fairly separate. I'm coastal gryphonkin. I'm also otherkith, a term I began using in 2022. I'm crowkith, ravenkith, and red-tailed hawk-kith.

I'm the host of the Ironwood Collective. We're a quiogenic plural system, meaning we don't care about our origins. I've known about the system for about two years now. That's been quite the adjustment. I'm far from the only person in our system to identify as alterhuman or nonhuman. I will almost definitely be the only one posting on this blog, though. There's only one other of us with my love for academia, and he doesn't front much.

I think that's sufficient for this post. I just wanted to give a little information about how I fall under the alterhuman umbrella.

No, 'kin' is not short from 'fictionkin', it's the other way around. Kin is an actual, if somewhat old-fashioned word, which was used to create 'otherkin' etc.

Nowadays mostly used in just as old-fashioned phrase "Kith and Kin" - friends and family. (Also a title of certain book).

i have no idea what those words are or what they mean, so i no longer feel dumb for not knowing what kin means because who on earth would guess that. those are 2 words with kin tacked onto the end which would normally lead me to think that kin is also a word but ive never heard it said before outside of the context were talking about, im getting too confused now. thank you for sharing this cursed knowledge

New term: Bound

This term describes having an important connection to someone or something. You don't have to identify as that someone or something, and you don't even have to identify with that someone or something, you just have to have a connection to that someone or something that's important to you, and simply saying that you like that someone or something doesn't quite describe how important the connection is.

This term got its name from the metaphor of being bound to someone or something, but you don't have to connect to this specific metaphor to use the term.

This term can be used as a suffix or as part of a phrase like "I am bound to [someone or something]". It can also be used as a verb, and it's also the past tense of the word bind so you can say "I bound myself to [someone or sonething]" or "I bind myself to [someone or something]". You can be loose with the exact phrasing if you want, those are just suggestions, and again, it can also be used as a suffix.

This term is intentionally broad and encompasses a lot of other terms, feel free to use this term along with other terms to describe the same connection if you want. This term is meant to emphasize the importance of the connection, not the nature of the connection. Whoever or whatever you're bound to is important to you, and that's what matters.

Important note: there are absolutely no criteria for a connection to be included under this term aside for a sense of importance. It doesn't matter how you're connected, how you experience that connection, or how you express that connection. As long as the connection is important to you, you can use this term. As a general rule, if you feel the need to label a connection, that connection can be safely assumed to be important.

This was coined by someone on Discord who opted to stay anonymous. I can direct questions of the term to them then give you a reply.

A very basic PSA on otherkin+ terms!

1. Kin. See otherkin, fictionkin, factkin. To identify AS something, such as a mythical creature, earthly animal, fictional character, or someone that exists (or existed) in the world. Often spiritually based, and aren’t a choice. Tend to have “shifts”. Fictionkin and factkin are NOT the same thing as fictives and factives, although sysmates can have kintypes, too!

2. Kith. To identifying strongly WITH something, but not AS it. Can be spiritual or not. Usually not seen as a choice, but experiences vary. Kith don’t usually have “shifts” like kin tend to. 

3. Otherhearted, animalhearted. To identifying strongly WITH something, but not AS it. For example “cat-hearted”, “dragon-hearted”, etc. Again, individual experiences differ, but can be spiritual or not, and may or may not be considered a choice. Doesn’t usually “shift” like kin.

4. Synpath. Used to describe feeling a profound connecting WITH something, but not AS it. Again, individual experiences differ, but can be spiritual or not, and may or may not be considered a choice. Doesn’t usually “shift” like kin.

5. Copinglink(er). AKA “clink”/“clinker”. Identifying as OR with something as a coping mechanism. Often psychological. May or may not be, but is often seen as an intentional connection formed for mental and emotional purposes. Could have “shifts” similar to kin. 

6. “Shift” is when someone “shifts” to feeling more like their kintype. Often a change in mental or emotional perception, but can include the bodily sensation of wings, tails, etc. Often involuntary, but can sometimes be induced. Generally positive, but can be uncomfortable.

May also indicate a specific kintype if they have more than one. For example, “I was in a dragon shift, but now I’m in an eel shift.” Short for “shapeshift.” Not to be confused with “fronting”, which is specifically for plural systems to indicate which sysmate is out. 

7. “Kintype” is the term for someone’s nonhuman identity.  For example, “My kintype is a bullfrog.” Kinfolk can have more than one kintype. This is sometimes called being “polykin”. For those preferring the term therian, the equivalent is “theriotype”. 

FYI: It’s often seen as incorrect to say “my kins”; it is seen as more correct to say “my kintypes”, as “kin” is what you are, not something you have.

8. Therianthropes, or therians, are often seen as related to but different from otherkin— otherkin often being mythical animals, and therians being earthly animals. Some feel therians are more different still, with some feeling it is closer to lycanthropy. YMMV! Ask people.

Adding onto this, which wasn’t in the original thread, but:

9. “KFF”, aka, “kin for fun”. Started off as a way to mock kinfolk. People who vibe with an animal, object, character, whatever, and use the term “kin” or “kinnies” for that experience. HERE is a very good post on why KFF tends to be detrimental to the kin community, other terms that would be better suited for the experience, and in general why it’s NOT the same thing as otherkin/fictionkin/factkin.

10. “Fictive” is a term for an individual within a plural system, who is someone-- or is from somewhere-- that is fictional in this world. Can sometimes be spiritual, sometimes not. Can be brought into the system on purpose, but usually isn’t. Some see themselves as having really existed somewhere in the multiverse. They are NOT the same thing as fictionkin, though some can also be kin, too!

11. “Factive” is a term for an individual within a plural system, who is someone that did-- or still does-- exist in this world. Can be someone historical, celebrities, or people the system knew personally like friends, family, pets, or abusers. Can sometimes be spiritual, sometimes not. Can be brought into the system on purpose, but usually isn’t. They are NOT the same thing as factkin, though some can also be kin, too!

This is a VERY fast and simplified explanation on common terms. Please, please do some research beyond this if needed, and TALK to people who are therians/kinfolk. While terms tend to have a set meaning, beliefs among individuals are beautifully diverse. TY for reading!

Call For Myths & Misconceptions

Hallo hallo!

For those of you who don’t already know, I’m planning on doing an Alterhumanity 101 panel for Othercon this year. That panel is going to be divided into three sections: terms & definitions, myths & misconceptions, and (hopefully) a live Q&A at the end.

However, I ran into a problem while drafting this: Most of the common myths and misconceptions I'm familiar with are pretty otherkin-, fictionkin-, and therian-focused. I am trying to make this an Alterhumanity 101 panel, not just an Otherkinity 101 panel, so I would like to avoid this if possible.

So, I’m here to ask: what are the common myths, misconceptions, and anti-[x] arguments you see spread about other alterhuman groups?

I am so far planning to talk about the terms transspecies, endel, otherlinker/copinglinker, otherhearted, kith, synpath, hearthome, plurality, daemons, and possibly real vampires/vampyres (I need to do research to see if it’s even common for them to consider themselves alterhuman or if the community largely rejects that association, for one thing). I am open to adding more terms/groups, but I want to keep the list relatively short - this is supposed to be about the basics and the terms people are most likely to come across.

Please reblog this even if you don’t have anything to add so it reaches as many people as possible! (And feel free to send me an ask or DM instead of responding publicly if you so choose.)

(Because I mentioned plurality, I am going to say in advance: please do not answer this post with syscourse regarding system origin/endogenic systems.
