so i have mentioned the whole "Ella Purnell (Jinx's VA) crying doing lines for Jinx" and how a lot of people think it's possibly a Jinx death or something and I previously said I didn't think so, but another thought crossed through my head that's just as traumatic and could possibly (no, Probably) lead to tears:
Vi inevitably choosing Caitlyn over Jinx in S2.
First hear me out, of Course i know that it doesn't Have to be this way; Vi clearly has enough love in her heart to love the two equally. but Jinx and the show choose to show this Vi, Jinx, Caitlyn dynamic as a uhhh... "Unconventional Love Triangle" to put it simply. Sevika puts the thought of "Vi replacing Jinx" early on and because of Jinx's trauma she chooses to believe that this Is true. However, the actions she takes in the show actually has the opposite effect of what she wants, pushing Caitlyn and Vi closer together.
So when it comes to episode 9, Jinx feels that VI is the one who must choose between the two. It's either Jinx, or Caitlyn. And by choosing to not take action at all, Jinx believes that her fears are confirmed and that Vi is choosing Caitlyn over her. now we know that this isn't true because even after Caitlyn frees herself and both the blue girls have each other at gun point, Vi is the one desperately trying to get Caitlyn to Not shoot Jinx, despite the other not seeing what Vi sees. Caitlyn does Not see Powder in Jinx (in fact i don't think she really ever has, but she knows that family is important to Vi which is why she doesn't say anything on the bridge when the two part ways for the first time). But it's Especially why she says to Vi, "She's too far gone".
Unfortunately, with the way that i think things are going in S2, the beginning i think Vi is still going to try to go after Powder, despite us knowing that Powder practically died in episode 9 (I also think that she's also dealing with the guilt that Cassandra's death specifically (because she probably doesn't really care as much about the others but she cares about Caitlyn and Caitlyn losing her mother is going to be Rough) is at Jinx's hands and she still holds Vander's "Whatever happens, it's on you" to heart despite it not being true), meanwhile Caitlyn feels that a solo "Caitlyn V Jinx" mission is going to end up with one of them dead, and she knows that either outcome is going to be terrible for Vi (because as i said before, Caitlyn no longer see's Powder, she see's Jinx and Jinx is a threat). And I think that actions from Both Jinx and Caitlyn are going to Force Vi's hand to Make A Choice.
and i think that come end of S2, she is going to side with Caitlyn.
(Of course i could be Totally wrong with this, but of all things I've said about S2 so far this is actually one of the things I'm sadly, more confident about)
Jinx: To pull off the final steps of my brilliant, master plan; I came back wearing the perfect disguise, something to make sure I was never noticed by any of you. Something so drab and uninspired...
Caitlyn: This feels like it's going to be a dig on me.
Jinx: I wore Caitlyn’s clothes!
Caitlyn: There it is.
*Vi comforts Caitlyn as Jinx shows off Caitlyn's boring suit to everyone*
Caitlyn: Hey, that suit is not drab, it has a fun salmon lining.
hating on an arcane character bc “they’re a bad person” is so funny bc there’s literally no character that can be considered a good person in the entire fucking show and that’s the charm of it
Call me jaded bitter and black but I’ll never care about the nuances of the police fill in on tv. Like we already have to deal with the ‘my dad is a cop :(‘ or ‘my broke brother joined the military’ irl why the fuck am I wasting my brain power on Caitlyn or vi. Like we know materialistically the authority of being a cop can get u what u want faster and that emotionally u either need strict routine with an outlet for ur violence or ur so used to it that u have to be a cop. I still fucking hate u tho like idc about how sad u are about being privileged and I said cop fill in but it’s really every kind of that character on tv like Zuko esque sorry I genuinely have less empathy for you than I do for other people idc
Caitlyn, Jinx, Ekko - everyone is looking straight "into the camera", at the viewer, Vi is the only one who doesn't see at all.
In all of her posters she's bound by Jinx: Jinx's braids wrap around her gauntlets when they're standing back to back, Jinx hugs her head (Vi looks into the camera), now her eyes are covered by Jinx as well.
The poster that mirrors s1 (Jinx hugs adult Vi's head vs. Vi hugging little Powder) made some people think Jinx might be protecting Vi in s2 in a way, but all other posters considered, it looks more like Vi loses sight of anything but her sister completely (and anything at all when Jinx isn't in the picture anymore since we know about pit fighter Vi) and needs to break free from Jinx - both in reality and in her own mind. Vi considers Jinx her responsibility, although maybe in a different way than Powder was, and this line of thought became her chains. She needs to shake them off because this approach can only hurt both the carer and the one they care about, and it does.
I also really like Caitlyn's poster because her eye is directly linked to Jinx's one on a "Wanted" poster by a pin. Cait's sight is zeroed in on Jinx, she may be tangled in all this, but she still sees. I wonder what exactly this is supposed to mean.
Arcane s2 predictions based on what we know so far:
Vi will join the Enforcers primarily to keep Jinx safe, figuring that if she is with the squad that hunts down Jinx, she can make sure Jinx is brought in alive. (Cait is the one to convince her of this with the, "If I go after your sister, one of us comes back in a box" line from the first teaser.)
Vi and Caitlyn will start dating / kiss / have sex early on or midway through the season; this is the scene shippers will love that was mentioned.
There will be tensions between Caitlyn vs Vi vs Ekko. Caitlyn will tell Vi (who will tell Ekko) that as Sheriff she DOES want to make things better for Zaun and on SOME level that is still true, BUT grief over her mother's death at Jinx's hands is spurring a need for revenge that has made her far more violent toward anyone who is perceived to be sheltering Jinx. In trying to defend Caitlyn, + joining the Enforcers, Vi looks like a traitor to Ekko, who calls her out. Vi also grows frustrated with Caitlyn's lack of progress on fixing Enforcer corruption and Cait calls out Vi's own hypocrisy re: violence.
Sevika will fill in the power vacuum that Silco left, taking over where he left off.
Sevika and the rest of Zaun won't cooperate with Cait's team to give up Jinx; even if they may not like Jinx, she's one of theirs and they don't like Piltie cops. Cait's best bet is the Firelights, but see above.
Jinx will kill the three bg Enforcers on Caitlyn's team and will brag about it to Vi and Caitlyn's faces, similarly to how she giggled about "half a dozen Enforcers, dead!" in season 1. (And no, I don't think Ginger is Ren.)
Jinx will go absolutely batshit when she sees Vi in an Enforcer uniform. And not in a good way.
Singed will sic Warwick on Vi and Caitlyn.
In the season finale, Vi will either protect Jinx from a killing blow or make it possible for her to escape. Caitlyn will witness this and take it as a betrayal (because Jinx killed her mother and wanted Vi to kill her), and will break up with Vi on the spot. This is the scene shippers will hate that was mentioned.
Look if NOTHING else… I want more Caitlyn & Jinx banter during season 2. Like the dialogue they have with each other in game is Hilarious and I want more of it.
Some trailer stuff I have not seen ppl point out yet:
This thing, I assume it has to do with Viktor & the hexcore, is reminiscent of the window in Silco’s office. This makes me believe that Viktor maybe filling the power vacuum left by Silco along with Caitlyn & Jinx, with all 3 of them embodying different parts of him: Jinx = revolution, Caitlyn = corruption, Viktor = actual progress for the undercity.
This big tower red & black tower in the heart of Piltover.
It’s seen on the left in both of these screen shots above, & a portion of it can be see on the right in the screen shot below.
Noxian flags in the background. I think the final battles gonna be a Noxus vs both Zaun & Piltover — “the enemy of my enemy…”.
It looks like Vi is carrying someone on her shoulders.
i think everything that makes arcane magical relies in their awesome use of foils that cross relationship dynamics/types/settings to make a plot that demands a lot of moral introspection. there's a key in the top left, but below i'll explain more of what i mean by the lines i've drawn.
simple enough, the colored lines represent the standing relationships. it's obvious that vi and jinx (red) are foils for silco and vander (purple), and so on. maybe less obvious/oblique is the comparison between heimerdinger and singed with silco and vander, but i think that speaks to the show's diversity in using this narrative technique.
the dashed lines are how i view the characters' morals and ethical codes throughout the show. none of them offer overly kind views, and maybe the vi/silco comparison is controversial, but if we examine the rhetoric in episode 3, much of what silco says to vander in the warehouse is mimicked by vi when she pleads with vander to understand her anger. this shared code obviously gets played out very differently and greatly informs the piltover/zaun divide.
the solid lines represent actions, or what i feel are defining instances of the show. jayce is really interesting in this regard! his attack on the shimmer plant accomplishes jinx AND vi's goals, despite those 2 being very distinct from one another.
the ekko and caitlyn comparison is interesting to me. they are very diametrically opposed - survival vs. naivety is a stark difference - but in episode 7, peace in the face of violence is demanded of them both.
overall, i think what this elucidated the most for me was a sort of "the sins of the father will be inherited by the son" motif. in their own ways, vi and jinx are playing out vander and silco's story, in much the same way that jayce and viktor are playing out singed and heimerdinger's past. but the bounds for comparison don't stop there - they layer on top of one another, and with wildcards like ekko and cait in the mix, it shows how complex a narrative the writers' have crafted!
let me know if you agree with these foils/comparisons or if i'm completely off base. i'm also excited to see how these ideas will develop in season 2.
I think people focus on the initial promo vs s2 promo too much as a symbol of protection tbh like maybe it is true that both within actual plot and within characterisation jinx feels like and is protecting vi from some sort of power shift in zaun/piltover. but I think it's also somewhat a symbol of a power shift in their relationship- because vi was the one who Got It, the one who knew how things run, the capable one. and now she's in post s1 zaun, she doesn't know anything about how the power balance in zaun works anymore, she's dating a cop who knows even less (god bless caitlyns stupid ass she doesnt know anything) and her sister isn't even fully human anymore - and jinx is the one who Knows, even if she's insane. if she's going against piltover, then she's also suddenly the one with a real goal and I imagine the heart of conflict between them will be vis refusal to accept what jinx believes is the only way forward. then she's not just signaling this shift in their dynamic, she's not protecting vi from outside forces - she is attempting to shield her from the threat she is bring on everyone herself. and that's TEA
