There's something so annoying when reading reviews of Pachinko by American critics calling Solomon "unlikeable" and saying that he has "led a privileged life". Yes, when compared to his elders, Solomon has led a life of relative comfort but he's also a Zainichi Korean who has experienced anti-Korean discrimination in Japan and has also spent his adult life being an Asian man in majority White institutions (Yale and Wall Street) in America during the Reaganite era. Solomon wants that American dream. His frustration and anger and hunger for power are all informed by these experiences. It's annoying to see critics miss out important historical context. It's annoying to see audiences (esp White ones) not want characters of colour who are written to be flawed. It's annoying to see audiences dislike/unable to sympathize with flawed characters of colour even when they have tragic backstories, while defending White characters who have done worse.

every now and then, the spirit of angsty rock musicals possesses me and I descend into a cycle of listening to, watching, acting out, talking about and singing Jesus Christ Superstar for about 2 weeks straight. during this time period, the falsettos of Ted Neeley and Ian Gillan, masterful ad libs of Carl Anderson, sorrowful balladic notes of Yvonne Elliman and all those who came before and after them consume my every waking thought. I become compelled to listen to every version of “Heaven On Their Minds” and “Gethsemane (I Only Want to Say)” I can find, even the ones recorded with shitty iPhone cameras and mics. my voice goes hoarse singing along with Judas’ lament over blood money and Simon’s overenthusiastic powerpoint to Jesus about how great he is. I obsess over how cunty Judas’, Herod’s, Caiaphas’ and Pilate’s outfits are by production. I weep over the kiss of betrayal as Judas and Jesus are separated for the last time. I learn new stuff about the singers and productions every time.

I soak up the inevitable poetic tragedy of it all and then I go back to our regularly scheduled programming.

In some respects, one can think of a quantum computer today as being analogous to an analog computer from years ago. The cooling is key to reduce energy and thus vibration in the system. If a quantum computer is run for too long the processor heats up and the noise in the results increases. So sensitive is the computer to heat or vibration that at the $150 million Nanoscience Hub at Sydney University, scientists have to use stairs rather than the lifts because the quantum computer would feel the vibration of the lifts in the building and produce meaningless results. Thus in Devs, the quantum computer main lab space is depicted as a suspended hovering isolated block, inside a bunker style building. This art directed visual feature, like so many in Devs, had one foot in reality and another in fiction.
