Oh damn, poor Xavier. And I loved seeing Jean and Ismael’s hijinks, Nathaniel and Simon catfighting over Denise’s flirting, Simon and Denise being cute, and the villain kids throwing XY under the bus. Amazing job!

Whose Been Painting The Roses Red?

Horns blew from seemingly out of nowhere. It was only when the doors opened that the heroes became much more alert as soon as they saw the white rabbit scurrying into the dormitory’s foyer followed by the infamous card guards. Leave it to this guy to make an entrance the day after holiday break.

“Presenting! His Grace, his Royal Highness, his Excellency, his Royal Majesty, King Nathaniel Wild-Card Hearts!”

A few students forced themselves to clap as card guards parted down the middle so the young King could make his way into the school, sporting a wide Cheshire-like grin as he did. A small orange and red hedgehog poked its head out from the crown atop his head. Orikko, if they remember correctly. It was hard to keep up when he kept swapping out one hedgehog for the next. Hero students moved themselves and the more defenseless students out of the way so they wouldn’t risk running into the Mad King of Wonderland. His smile isn’t to be trusted, but that never stopped the villainous students from approaching and slinging an arm around his shoulders. They’ve earned that right, after all.

“Lovely to see you again, your Highness,” Denise greeted in their smooth, silky voice and tipped their veiled hat with a bow. Their shadow did the same and even kissed his hand. The redhead beamed and waved the sentient shadow off.

“Denise, you flatter me.” Right at that moment, Simon came up from behind the King and rush to his partner’s side to take hold of their arm and the shadow’s. “Oh, Minister, relax. ‘Tis nothing but a simple greeting.”

The other redhead let out a hmph. “Even so, I remind you the commitment you made to your boyfriend, your Majesty.” With a slight hiss, he bid the royal goodbye and walked off down the opposite end of hall with Denise and their shadow. Nathaniel and his card guards went the other way. “Honestly, the things some with power will do. Next thing you know, he’ll be coveting for that deVil girl.” He spat the name as if it were poison.

Denise and their shadow smirked at the clear display of jealousy. “Amor, you have nothing to worry about,” they croon and stop in the middle of the hall to cup Simon’s face while their shadow drapes themself around them, making the young Minister turn as red as their hair and mutter a quick prayer. “We made a commitment, did we not, choir boy?”

“Oh, Father,” Simon shudders and Denise slowly began to close the gap between their lips. “Help me.” Before they could kiss, an enraged scream sounded throughout the entire school followed by the sound of glass shattering, hitting the ears of staff and the students making their way to their dorms. Recognizing the scream, many students rushed into their rooms or hid in any available locker

For a moment, it was silent. Then the card guards filed back into the foyer, trying to keep their composure and not cower the moment that the Mad King stormed through, holding a rose bush with the roots still attached. To all, it was a startling sight as Nathaniel took pride in his roses and cared for each one of them… But then they saw red dripping from the petals to reveal… White.

Wonderland Law #96 that everyone, even the worst villains abide by states that only red roses are to be planted throughout the kingdom with the exception being for a wedding and in that case, the roses may be white.

Nathaniel applies this law to Wonderland and his own life. But since there’s no wedding, then-

“Whose been painting my roses red?” He croons softly at first before a manic look appeared in his eyes. Even his pupils shrank to nearly nothing. “WHOSE BEEN PAINTING MY ROSES RED?! Who dares to taint with vulgar paint the royal flower bed?! For painting my roses RED!… Someone will lose a head!” For emphasis, he slid his finger across his neck.

Jean gulped and tugged on the collar of his gold bomber jacket. Okay… And many should keep in mind, that it was on accident. He was just walking, had his bags packed for break. And what happened next was completely by mistake. How could he have seen it coming?… So, he was walking, tripped over Ismael’s damn tail, and his claws got a hold of the rose bush… Yeah, not great. So, he and Ismael ordered a new one that would be delivered over the break, arrived to the school way early, and, wouldn’t you know it? They were panicking so much that they ordered white roses. Naturally, they panicked and painted the roses red. A little half-assed, now that Jean’s seeing them again.

He and Ismael exchange a look and nod. It was time to do the right thing…

“It was Xavier!” Ismael yelled and pointed at the blonde just walking into the school. Fortunately, Nathaniel was so blind with rage that he didn’t even question the logic behind Ismael’s accusation… Not that he ever did before.

Jean hastily nods. “Yeah! It Xavier!”

Alya slaps a hand over the mouth of a hero student before they could say anything in defense of the innocent student. “Yep! It was Xavier! He showed up with a white rose bush and painted it red all over! I saw him!”

“Definitely Xavier,” Kim confirms with a nod from Ondine.

Having already made up his mind, Nathaniel snaps his fingers, making his card guards stand tall at attention, awaiting his next command. “Find him.” With that, they were gone. “… Well, back to your business!” He cheerily said and tossed the painted bush away before heading back to his room, much to the relief of everyone. Still, Lila texted Xavier to let him know that he should hide.

It’s odd how lots of writers basically turn Inspector Javert into Claude Frollo?

In the original novel Javert is not obsessed with Jean Valjean. It is not his life’s goal to capture him. He is a police officer who is bad because he is a police officer; he’s bad because he’s just doing his job, and his job is to enforce cruel violent bigoted inhumane laws. He reunites with Jean Valjean by coincidence and just seems mildly annoyed by it. He doesn’t care at all about Jean Valjean any more than he would care about literally any other criminal in the world (until the barricades, which is the first moment when he does develop complicated emotions for him.) Javert isn’t bad because he is obsessed with Valjean— he is bad because he is a cop, and as a cop it is his duty to be mindlessly cruel. He is indifferent to Jean Valjean on a personal level. He is not obsessed, he’s an authoritarian.

But Frollo!

Frollo is a character who has a deep personal obsession with someone, pursues them relentlessly out of that personal obsession, and then uses the law as an tool to abuse them. Frollo is the one who makes it his life’s mission to capture some random person who did nothing wrong and use the full power of the law to torture them for his own gratification.

I kinda don’t understand why it’s so common for Les Mis adaptations and stuff to turn Javert into Frollo by making him ~personally obsessed with Valjean~ and ~making it his life goal to catch him.~ It severely undercuts the novel’s political message about the evils of the prison system, and also just makes Javert a far shallower and less compelling character. It makes him evil in a way that isn’t even interesting to read and has nothing very valuable to say.

How did it happen? It was just a free day evening, an evening alone in front of her TV and the old DVD she had found. A few memories of her childhood when she had watched the movie over and over again with her grandma and grandpa. She knew every song and wanted to go to Paris herself.

But not like this, not in the Middle Ages and not in a scene she knew what it would mean. She was scared when she saw the huge old buildings, the people watching her as she came out of the alley. The clothes so different from the humans no dress, no covering under fabric.

She almost screamed when she saw that her image had changed despite her modern clothes, she was not realistic. It felt like her body yes, but when she saw that she looked like she had been painted in a puddle, she almost screamed out of confusion and fear.

It was sinful. It was fear that coursed through her body as she tried to run away from the city herasu wanted to escape the events that would make VParis burn. Get out of Paris, there must be an exit, she thought, looking around hurriedly, but there was hardly a blind spot in this city.

There were people everywhere, people who almost brought the city to a standstill, guards who patrolled and, as she herself soon learned, guards at the gate who kept her from perhaps finding an exit with their halberds raised.

,,And I'm supposed to believe you, traveler?" he asked again, the iron key still locked in his ringed hands. She knew him and had tried to explain to the judge that she didn't want anything here, that she just wanted to go back.

But unfortunately she had to realize that it was only because the story here deviated from the movie that his justice dragged on. That his curiosity and excitement flashed in his eyes as he walked around her.

She felt his gaze on her clothes, on her Jean's, which clung to her legs and on the T-shirt under which her bra was slightly visible. He hasn't changed…he's getting worse, she realized with horror as she still felt the heavy metal on her wrists as if she didn't stand a chance. But Frollo the judge had actually believed her words.

He wasn't stupid, the clothes she was wearing weren't from here, weren't from anywhere in the world, weren't from any books he'd read. Her language and the way she talked to him was "different", it wasn't like something had been changed over time.

,,I can't let you go…darling you see people would want to see you burn" he murmured looking out of the small window seeing in reflection how she was thinking. Her knowledge probably went up to a certain point, but something was different.

She didn't seem to have thought about this story here, didn't pay attention to the knowledge of time. ,,And-and what should I do, Frollo, you have to let me go, this isn't my story," she protested, wanting to reach for him but he grabbed her hand instead.

Seeing the desire flash as the chains rattled he restrained himself from attacking her it was obsession she saw. His grip was firm in a surprising way and she wanted to leave, wanted to go back to her world, to her time.

Didn't want to live in the past of a movie where she lived with an insane righteous murderer. ,,But you're my story," he said with a smile, taking hold of her chains and pulling her close, running his fingers almost cautiously over her shirt.

He saw her shudder as he traced the hem of her bra, fascinated by the clothes on her shoulders and what was underneath. Seemed completely interested in her entire appearance and something told her that she wouldn't just feel the metal on her.

That she would never get out of the city, let alone his house. That he would lock her away, study her, watch her, make her his. She would become another hidden detail of a story.

An Impromptu Ranking of Hugolian Adoptive Parental Figures

Ursus,The Man Who Laughs : I know everyone's going to want Valjean to be first place, but he's not. Ursus takes the lead not only because he's got two adopted kids, but because he does what no other dad-mom-general-adoptive-parent on the list does, and actually does the grubby hands-on work of Raising Kids. He doesn't have maids or nannies or nuns or any help; he's just a guy living in his traveling van and raising up a couple kids (who arrived at his door horribly sick and injured, even, which he manages to treat?? ) with zero support except for a literal wolf. He's honest with them and openly loving and teaches them how to survive in their own time and society. Too bad about the kids existing in a really bleak Hugo novel, but you did great, Ursus. 10/10.

Jean Valjean, Les Miserables: He loves Cosette SO much and tries SO hard! Second place only because (1) during the convent years, he sees Cosette for one hour a day , and while that limitation is definitely not his ideal choice,it does mean he's just not the constant primary caregiver the way Ursus is and (3) More Trauma means More Problems, and especially So Many Communications Issues. Plus a really really misguided faith in the importance of attaining bourgeoisdom. IDEK , man. Heroic efforts, heroic failures, 18/18 Napoleonic Antithesis Points maybe?

Lethierry, Toilers of the Sea: a decent normal guy raising his niece, who has very normal 19C Dad Faults-- too much trust in stereotyped gender roles, and too much focus on his job at the expense of his domestic life. Absolute middle of the road, not heroic as a parent but also doesn't do anything that makes me go "holy shit NO , dude" . He's just a humanly flawed but caring parental figure. 5/10 complete middle of the road

Cimourdain, Ninety-Three: Listen I LIKE Cimourdain. I respect his whole narrative arc. I think he's probably the most interesting character in the novel. But he loses Parenting Points for (1) not being the primary hands-on caregiver for large chunks of his adopted kid's life and (2) uh. the whole. the thing where he kills his adopted kid. There are circumstances yes I know but still . If you are directly responsible for the death of your kid you are going to lose points in the parenting games. That's just how it is. 4/4 with full symbolic meaning of the number.

Frollo, Notre Dame de Paris: HOLY SHIT NO, DUDE.

Semi-adopted THREE kids and TWO died horribly and he directly threatened the life of the last one. Even before then he's not a GREAT parent, largely leaving the raising of his sort-of sons up to others, locking one up in a single building, letting another fall into addiction, and the third go starving and homeless on the streets. So it's already not doin' great but arguably he's Trying?

But then he wants to bang a teenager, and decides they're all expendable. Absolute worst reason for the absolute worst parenting decisions. 8/8 you ARE the Fatalité , dude, look within and quit blaming your issues on teenagers.

Honorable Mentions: Radoub, Ninety-Three: gets the "like a mother" comparison, goes through a firefight for his adopted kids, stays sweet and cheerful and soft around the babies to the end. Gets set here because he's NOT an adoptive single parent, he's actually co-parenting with the kids' birth mom and they are delightful platonic parenting partners. We wish you, Michelle, and the kids all the best , Radoub! Good job getting out of your novel without killing anyone you love!

Gavroche, Les Miserables: OK he only manages to adopt the momes for an evening, and for an adult I'd be docking All The Points for that, but for an unparented 12 year old he is doing GREAT. He even kept looking for them afterwards! The biggest and most sincere You Tried star for you, Gavroche, it's not your fault you're all getting atomized hard enough to explode a barricade.

Dishonorable Mentions:

Gillenormand, Les Miserables : If you're gonna hold a kid as a financial hostage and destroy his dad's life because the kid's soooooo important to you, you might also try making sure that kid has any way to know that you actually give a damn about him? Maybe at least don't beat him with sticks? Legos be under your feet forever, Gillenormand!

Ivy’s deathwish in Dead Beauty AU. The chapter needs to continue, but, yeah. Posting what I’ve got now.

Ivy sits still (too still) with her head laid on top of Claudine’s and the smoke curls around them.

She doesn’t breathe it in, not for several long seconds, not until her lungs decide to cooperate again; then she breathes it in, coughing immediately after. How embarrassing this is, Ivy de Vil choking on smoke.

„You okay?“ Claudine has the damn audacity to pull away and ask that. Are you okay? Did the Hell freeze over? Did mould jeans actually go back into fashion again?

„Obviously,“ Ivy says, turning her nose up and drawing Claudine close again, before her muscles inevitably lock up, „Never been better.“

„Just checking, you know, with all the alcohol and poison,“ Claudine breathes more smoke into the air and Ivy would love to answer, she really would–

Would she though?

When she can move again, she just slowly stretches out her hand and fingers, watching the light dance on her red nails: She’s got a new manicure, got it done just yesterday. It’s flawless now, bringing her comfort. She decides she’s fine now, can push herself for a bit more time before she gets the antidote. Even if she isn’t actually sure how much strychnine she has had, how much time it was since, what with Harry Hook being such a distraction–

It’s his turn now, and she hopes he will come up with something fun.

She also feels like she should tell her youngest cousin what’s going on – right after she yells at him for coming back, and for coming back and not telling her immediately, not necessarily in that order, and, yeah. For that, he can wait a bit.

If he wanted to know, he should have just come to see her.

Ivy steals Claudine’s cigarette to drag a breath from it while her body isn’t being a joy-killing bitch, and here, fuck that–

Claudine has to forcibly take the lit cigarette from her locked up fingers, lest the hot embers fall down her cleavage, and oh no what a shame would that be–

„I wasn’t done with that yet,“ Ivy complains as soon as she can move again, ignoring the way Claudine lifts her eyebrow at her, the way her lips curl.

„Weren’t done with that, I’m sure–“

„Hey,“ Diego, that poor excuse of a cousin, so very rudely interrupts them, „What’s up?“

Ivy is unsure whom she should try to kill with her glare first, as Claudine answers that oh, yeah, don’t worry, she’s just, y’know, actively dying, and all that.

Ivy will have you know she has it completely and utterly under control, thank you very much.

„Harry Hook was there,“ she tells him, „We played Russian Roulette.“

„Of fucking course it was a Hook–“ he mutters, as if he didn’t sleep with the Beauty’s Captain any chance he gets, fucking hypocrite, and, „Did you win or lose?“

Ivy turns her nose up: „Yes,“ she informs him.

„Stupid bitch.“

She tries to show him the middle finger, but just manages to lock herself in a spasm again, damn it–

„Claudine, go get her the antidote – Auntie’s sleeping pills, she’s keeping them in her bedside table, second drawer,“ he commands, as if he had any fucking right to order around her Claudine–

„Fuck you, Diego,“ she spits out as soon as she can, „Fuck you.“ Then she turns to Claudine, quickly getting her tone under control, speaking sweeter and angling herself just so: „Could you go get it, sweetheart? She moved it to the first drawer.“ It is probably getting just a bit too late, she supposes.

„…Fine,“ sighs out Claudine, „For you.“ She gets up and extinguishes the cigarette on an ashtray and Ivy mourns the loss almost immediately. She chooses to glare at Diego, what with his annoying insistence on not dying and stuff.

 Claudine walks round Diego, who leans on the doorframe with his hands crossed, and as soon as she’s out of earshot, he asks: „Really? Hook? And Frollo – why are you still so hung up on her, anyway?“

Ivy chooses to not-hear the second answer, and instead spits out: „Oh, so this is how it is?! When you sleep with a Hook, it’s okay, but if I do it, I’m suicidal and danger to myself?!“

„Yes! Ivy, they are dangerous, and fuck, look at yourself–“

She manages to throw the glass at him before she spasms again – he dodges, that fucker, and comes help her into a safer position. Gods, sometimes she really hates him.

„Look at yourself too,“ she says when she can breathe again, ignoring the way her hands can’t seem to stop shaking, and the way Diego takes them into his, „Your throat is still bruised, and how long was it? A week?“

„Two.“

„You looked like she tried to rip out your throat with her teeth.“

He smirks, that bastard; „Pretty sure she did try that, yeah–“

And that’s how Claudine finds them, laughing because there is nothing else to do, because they are just two lost cases anyway, because the de Vils have reached Hell and yet they keep on sinking.

And yet, Ivy lets Claudine force–feed her the pill.
