The thing that makes House and Wilson click so well is how Wilson, despite being very nice, is seldom gentle.
Wilson’s kindness involves confronting uncomfortable truths – he doesn’t usually seem to find it kind to lie to people. Granted, he’s not at House’s level of deranged depressive ‘misery means all is well’, but he isn’t one to sugar-coat awful inevitabilities. If something sucks, he’ll say it sucks. This is what makes his bedside manner so good (and his marriages so very doomed): he recognises and acknowledges death in all its forms, and he doesn’t flinch from it.
And the thing is, House has no reason to believe that life is going to get better. Nor does he have any good reason to be contented with himself. If someone like Cameron tries to console him, why should he believe her? She’s ultimately optimistic in spite of reality. He can’t fathom that optimism could ever coincide with reality. Likewise, if anyone shows him sympathy, he’s going to laugh. After all, what’s the point of sympathy? Usually, sympathy expresses a difference between expectation and reality. For House, who has grim expectations, sympathy is a waste of time.
So, Wilson is the only person who will, over and over, meet House at his level. He’s nice, but he knows House well enough to recognise how little point there is ever trying to console him or cheer him up. He recognises that House lives in an alternate reality - one where misery is the norm. And while he might point out that this is, still, an alternate reality, he also has the courage to step into House’s world and stand there with him.
That’s why House will, ultimately, hear Wilson out as a peer, even when everyone else is beneath him. Because Wilson’s kind enough to make the effort to see the world through House’s eyes. And Wilson’s got the grace to be honest with House about his own insanity. But Wilson’s also got the patience to act as House’s peer nevertheless - to guide him through misery even when he knows it’s insane. Wilson isn’t going to bother immersing House in platitudes and banal encouragements. Instead, he’ll lecture House and argue with him, and in doing so, he’ll prove he’s willing to meet House as an equal.
House probably hasn’t ever been treated as anyone’s equal otherwise, nor treated others as equals in past. So, Wilson’s the only person who’s ever been kind to him on his terms.

“ball” - Jegulus microfic - @into-the-jeggyverse - 305 words
Regulus is sitting on the couch with one foot tucked under him and James’ feet in his lap and he’s absentmindedly playing with the hem of James’ joggers. He’s reading a fascinating book Pandora got him about the interconnection between Greek philosophy and mythology; James is reading a magazine that Regulus has never heard of. Regulus is getting lost in the moment until he hears Sirius snickering from across the room, he tries to ignore it, but Sirius doesn’t stop.
“What?” Regulus looks up, annoyed.
“You guys are the literal embodiment of ‘you know how to ball, I know Aristotle’.” Sirius chuckles.
“Did you just compare us to a Taylor Swift lyric?” Regulus raises an eyebrow.
“I mean…” Sirius gestures between Regulus and James.
“You mean what?” Regulus narrows his eyes.
“What are you reading?” Sirius asks instead of answering.
Regulus reluctantly looks at his book about Greek philosophy then just glares at Sirius who cackles in response. “So? James is also reading?” Regulus tries to justify.
“James, what are you reading?” Sirius asks.
Regulus looks at James who’s trying very hard not to giggle when he says, “FourFourTwo.”
“I don’t even know what that is.”
“It’s my football magazine, love.” James tells him with a chuckle.
“Face it, Reggie. Your relationship is a walking, talking Taylor song.” Sirius leans back with a smug smile.
Before Regulus can respond, Barty and Evan walk in the living room and throw themselves on the other couch. “Hey, Sirius? You want to play video games with me and Ev?” Barty asks, unaware of the current conversation.
James and Sirius look at each other and burst out laughing.
“Oh, for fuck’s sake.” Regulus mumbles and rolls his eyes.
“What?” Barty looks between the three of them.
“It’s Taylor’s world, Barty. We’re just living in it.” Sirius tells him.
“Well, obviously.” Barty rolls his eyes.

Hey dude I noticed your hatred for me reflects your general distain for humanity. You're really gonna pin me to the ground and scream how much you despise me while you rip into my flesh? Dude there's people watching. You're a fucking monster dude. What? Not going to respond? Have you accepted it? You despise me so much you are willing to give up what little humanity you have left just so you can win. When you kill me my body at your feet will represent your own death. With my blood on your hands everyone will see you as the irredeemable piece of filth that I know you are. This isn't a fight anymore. I will stand here and bare my chest to you and let you kill me so I am proven right. Not like in a gay way though

TBR: Black Authors Spotlight!
In honor of Black History Month, here's a selection of my mountainous TBR--new works by many fave authors (Okorafor, Emezi, Polk, Solomon, Roanhorse, and Giddings), and many others I am hyped to try (shout-out to Ancrum, Monae, and Shawl especially!).
And honorable mention, too, to P. Djèlí Clark and Suyi Davies Okungbowa, who did not make the TBR list only because I read them last month haha.

Okay uhm - I need to say this because I am noticing this a bit in the responses to Somerton's "Apology" video. Do people really think, just because ableism in the workplace is forbidden, that workplaces don't discriminate?
Even if insurance stuff covers your health issues, I won't put it past an employer to let you go with the made up argument it doesn't. Because non-epileptic people are generally very uncomfortable with seeing seizure activity and some of them will prioritize their comfort over sticking to anti-discrimination laws.
I think Somerton's video is full of BS, but I am even more uncomfortable with how happy people are to dismiss Somerton's medical history/symptoms, just so they can argue against him. As if people with disabilities can be absolved for being dicks by accepting their stated medical and discrimination history.
When you don't even have to do so to point out the harm Somerton's logic does?
I mean - I think it's warranted to question James' statements because of his complicated relationship with telling the truth, but I am just kind of bothered by how people argue "this could not have happened because laws/policies" No. Let it have happened. It makes his apology worse if you choose to believe him on this, trust me.
If our response to disabled people acting terrible (stealing other people's material and presenting it as your own), is to accuse said disabled people of lying about their symptoms and diagnosis, I think we are missing the point and problem.

“taste” - Jegulus microfic - @into-the-jeggyverse - 688 words
“holiday movies” - 25 Days of Jegumas - Day 9 - @noblehouseofgay
“I’m not saying they’re cinematic master pieces, I’m saying they can be annoyingly captivating.” James flops down on the couch.
“I think what you’re saying is that you have terrible taste in holiday movies.” Regulus sits down beside him.
“It’s not like I purposefully watch them.” Regulus gives James a skeptical look. “Oh, come on. You’ve never been flicking through channels and stayed on one of those movies just a little too long?” James holds his hand up indicating ‘a little’ with his thumb and forefinger.
“No…” Regulus bats his hand away but he’s also avoiding eye contact.
“See!” James calls him out. “There’s something about them that draws you in, just for a minute.”
“Maybe I stay on the channel just to see how ridiculous it is?” Regulus poorly defends himself.
“Sure…”
“They’re always so over-the-top predictable.” Regulus rolls his eyes. “The jaded guy that hates Christmas happens to be the only one that can ‘save Christmas’. Spoiler alert, he saves Christmas.” Regulus mocks.
James chuckles. “Or the over-worked city girl who comes back to her hometown and remembers the ‘true meaning of Christmas.’”
Regulus is quiet for a moment, then in a much softer voice he says, “Or the childhood best friends who realize they actually have feelings for each other.”
James turns to look at Regulus and he’s looking down at his lap, fidgeting with his fingers. “Yeah, that one’s the worst.” He whispers and turns to fully face Regulus. “It’s so unrealistic. How could they not know?”
Regulus hums and he’s so quiet that James wouldn’t hear him if they weren’t sitting so close. “How could they know each other for so long and never see what’s right in front of them?” Regulus keeps looking down for a moment before his lifts his head and makes eye contact with James.
James smiles softly and holds eye contact for a minute. “And there’s always that moment where they make eye contact, and everything clicks.” James slightly leans towards Regulus.
Regulus nervously bites his bottom lip for an excruciatingly long moment but never breaks eye contact. “And they think… maybe this is what they’ve been missing all along.” He whispers weakly, hesitantly.
James’ smile grows just a little but he’s also cautious as he lifts his hand. “Then one of them does something that might be a little too affectionate.” He tucks a curl behind Regulus’s ear and his hand lingers on his cheek. “Just to test the waters, nervous the other character might not feel the same way.” He lets his fingers settle on Regulus’ neck as he brushes his thumb over his cheekbone.
Regulus leans into his hand and James can see so many different emotions flash in his eyes. He closes them and takes a deep breath and when he opens his eyes, they’re fierce and vulnerable at the same time. “And the moment gets really intense, because you know they feel the same, but they’re also sort of terrified. Because if they cross that line, everything could change.”
James nods in understanding, but his smile is still growing, and he moves even closer to Regulus. “But what if they realize everything’s supposed to change.” He whispers and it’s barely a breath, a secret just for them. “What if everything starts to make sense and they realize… they realize they’ve actually been in love this whole time… or at least one of them has.”
Regulus’ finally lets his smile grow as he leans closer to James when he whispers. “I think they probably both have.”
James beams and Regulus bites his bottom lip trying to hide his own growing smile. They gaze into each other’s eyes for several moments, letting years of emotions pass between them.
Eventually, James breathes the smallest chuckle. “Then they stare at each other for a really long time, and you want scream, ‘just kiss already’, because you know it’s going to happen.”
“But it’s just so cliché.” Regulus rolls his eyes fondly as he leans in.
“Yeah, things like that never happen in real life.” James' lips brush against Regulus’
“Never.” Regulus closes the last sliver of space and finally presses his lips to James’.
