Honestly the best part about True Neutral Jack to me is the fact he... doesn't even really care for the money. Sure he cares about the business growing and expanding but like, in his personal life? He's not doing shit with it for what we see. Like he's not this capitalist sigma grinder type with big dreams or goals like owning a mansion or some shit. Like im sure even if he was a millonaire he'd still be wearing the same suit and living in the same house and likely using the same cheap paint. He just needed a hobbie to run from the skeletons in his closet.

saw a really good post abt writing. unfortunately it was labeled as suspension of disbelief for now having people talk in therapy speak. im so sorry to say i dont think thats suspension of disbelief, suspension of disbelief is watching star trek and knowing humans cant be in space and travel faster than light but letting it slide for the sake of the story. something that doesnt work or is impossible but is asked to be believed for the sake of the story. another could be any time an actor is alone on stage and says "im alone"-- no, you have an entire crowd around and behind you, watching and listening, but we brush it under the rug for the sake of the story

its less suspension of disbelief youre targeting with hating therapy speak and more that you want intentional imperfection of characters and skillful distribution of information. you want people to act within a normal framework (not suspending anything) and only give up parts of information (has nothing to do with suspension)

the slanted speak can take you out of a suspension but slanted speech is not itself antithetical to suspension. like a character might talk like that bc of their character is just Like That. or it might show something impossible through that style of speak, maybe something like showing theyre not completely human

however people saying they hate things like "he growled" is most definitely people breaking down their own suspension over exaggeration. like people do growl, but its often exaggerated. ive seen people not like other exaggerations too, some of which are impossible for a human to do literally. thats someone not suspending themselves

anyways. i say all this bc i no longer understand the "'x' by the narrative" trope that tumblr loves. then bore it into the ground by saying its for just about everything. it most definitely is not about everything because otherwise it wouldnt be a trope lol
