Something else to consider is that if Amanda was ever on psychotropic medications in the past, especially if those meds were poorly prescribed/managed, she may have permanent side effects from those meds that could cause repetitive mouth movements and/or twitching in the upper body and neck.

Most of the physical traits Shawnee is choosing would be indicative of anxiety, poor stress management, and PTSD. There are a few moments (I’d have to go pull them from the films honestly) where it really looks like leftover TD or EPS.

One of the things I like about Shawnee Smith's performance as Amanda is how twitchy and hardly ever fully composed she is.

Some of it is obviously a factor of something like PTSD. For example the jerky head movements and also scrambling to feel her head because of her experience within the reverse bear trap.

Amanda tends to always be under high stress situations anytime we see her. It’s not a shock that she is never well put together... She tends to clench her jaw a lot? Alongside just moving her mouth a ton. This is partially due to panic and heavy breathing but also I'm assuming a soothing motion.... If you really want to read into it, Amanda may have some oral fixation type stuff going on after having the reverse bear trap attached to her jaw. Oh and we also have the shoulder shrugging of course.

feel like psych deserves more credit for manifesting guest stars from almost every single property it referenced. i know plenty of shows have pop culture relevant guest stars but none of them make references that are so very specific and none of them get 99% of their references to actually show up. like psych will throw out a name exclusively for the bit and then an unpredictable number of episodes/seasons later that person will literally show up as murderer/victim/random extended family member of the week with no comment. george takei. william shatner. cybill shepherd from moonlighting. almost every single actor from the breakfast club (one of them recurring!). biff and doc brown from back to the future. dr frankenfurter himself. literally carey elwes. john cena??? john rhys davies. half the cast of twin peaks. the original "come on son" guy. alan ruck. michael rooker. both leads from she's all that. winston from ghostbusters. bud's mom from the cosby show. curt smith from tears for fears (who also sang live with them at an event, like, twice). they mentioned billy zane and val kilmer so many times per season that through sheer willpower they got billy zane and val kilmer to both show up in their series finale. those guys committed to their bits so hard that they ended their show with one of the most diversified and stacked cameo rosters in tv & thats honestly so funny and iconic of them

An excellent fic dealing with Shawn’s inevitable trauma after being shot and kidnapped, and how it’s triggered by one simple gas station.

honestly I love the later seasons of psych mainly because they took Shawn’s craziness in the early seasons and gave it to lassie. Wdym he used to read his sister Miranda rights as a bedtime story. Wdym he’s been micro-dosing chloroform to build tolerance for over 15 years. Someone take away his gun that man is not mentally stable

i think people should talk more about the unique sense of hopelessness which stems from the realization that “help” in the form myth promised you does not exist; there is no help coming and you must create from scratch the tools that will dismantle (or at least diminish) your own suffering, and do this not once but every day for the rest of your life

ok one of psychs funniest meta gags is how a popular media property will exist & be referenced regularly in universe but when the actors from that property show up as guest stars in the show theres NO acknowledgement of it. shawn knows every brat pack movie half by heart but when he meets ally sheedy the fake serial killer he never once comments on how similar she looks to ally sheedy the actress. there are like 20 karate kid AND my cousin vinny references including a literal picture of ralph macchio in that one scene but no one notices that officer conforth Is Literally The Same Guy. shawn and gus are lowkey genuine star trek nerds and spend a whole episode gaslighting Real Life George Takei but when william shatner shows up in the flesh hes just juliets loser dad. not even a passing "hey, you look familiar" joke. its SO funny.
