I wasn't active on social media/in online circles for a long time (so correct me if I'm wrong), but I think I've noticed that generally the Abrahamic Faiths tend to be more protected than the polytheistic and/or archaic ones. Like, take my proposal for making a version of the Bible told in fun, clear, simple English (with the feel of Harry Potter or Percy Jackson or something). That proposal did seem to make one person a little upset online (I'm still sorry if it did), but I feel it'd do even worse irl. If I actually did that and made a Percy Jackson style version of the Bible, the "moral majority" folks would kill me. But when they write books like that about ancient Greek, Roman, Norse or Egyptian mythology, I see nobody raising a big fuss (but again, please correct me if I'm wrong about that).
Anyways, I'm saying I see a double standard here. I only want a version of the Bible told like Percy Jackson because that's the only way I could ever read it. It's otherwise a dry book full of old english, and that's something I can never sit through. And I'm surely not the only one like that. So really, writing a version of the bible like this might actually help the book reach more people. And besides all that, it's just a double standard. Oh, when it's ancient religions it's okay but not when it's your modern cultural majority religion? Double standard, I say. Double standard.

People on here are always like "fuck capitalism, why can't things be weird anymore" and then write up a whole dissertation about how the biggest IPs need to change to be weirder.
Like, you are so close. You are so close to getting the point. "Big" IPs *can only exist because they are normal*. They will *never* be weird. They will *never* do what you want. Go find some smaller IPs. Bring back discovery. Bring back never having heard of a book before you buy it. Bring back watching obscure anime online that none of your friends know about. Bring back trying new things, even if they're bad or cheaply made. That is how you get *weird*.
#if y'all want some obscure recs i got em#but understand that centralized will never be weird#weird exists because it appeals to a few#mainstream exists because it tries to appeal to everyone by boiling out individuality#it is impossible for the weird to become mainstream because that would inherently make it *not weird*#stop trying to shift the things you like into the capitalism model#break the capitalism model#fiction#fandom#stories#books#reading

I do think Blazing Saddles handled its one depiction of native americans very poorly, and the full extent of its representation of chinese workers on the railroad is they were literally just there. not even one single speaking line. unclear if this is worse or better than the redface.
it's fucking phenomenal at lampooning antiblack racism though. extremely blatant, extremely funny satire, which is constantly and loudly saying "racism is the philosophy of the terminally stupid at best and morally depraved at worst, and we should all be pointing and laughing at them 24/7"
plus the main character is a heroic black man who has to navigate a whole lot of bullshit but is constantly smirking at the extraordinarily stupid racists and inviting the audience into the joke. the one heroic white character is a guy who was suicidally depressed until he met the protagonist and they just instantly became buds, and he's firmly in a supporting role the whole time and happy to be there. the protagonist saves the day with the help of his black friends from the railroad, and uses the position of power he was given to uplift not only those friends, but all the railroad workers of other minorities too, in an explicit show of solidarity.
anyone saying "Blazing Saddles is racist" had better be talking about its treatment of non-black minorities. it had better not be such superficial takes as "oh but they say the n-word all the time" or "they have nazis and the kkk in there!" because goddamn if that's the full extent of your critique I very seriously suggest you read up on media analysis. there is too much going over your head, you need to learn to recognize satire.
#blazing saddles#finx watches tv#finx rambles#I recognize that I'm saying all this as someone who's not black#but I am also saying it as someone with a basic understanding of race relations in the usa#and a basic understanding of sarcasm#bc it really does not take more than that to recognize what they're doing in this movie#it is NOT subtle#and it is very funny#mel brooks movies are kinda hit or miss for me ngl#men in tights is great if a bit too crass for my taste#spaceballs has great jokes but the central story lacks any real heart so it doesn't grab me#history of the world was just kind of unpleasant and then I switched it off#but blazing saddles? phenomenal#I could not stop laughing the whole way through#and the central story DOES have heart bc it's the friendship between bart and#whassisname#jim#the Kid#plus bart working out how to succeed at an impossible task#also frankly cleavon little just grounds the comedy really well even before gene wilder shows up and we get their chemistry#bc he's cool calm collected and constantly inviting the audience into the joke#but the character's not too cool to ever mess up or ever be silly#he makes bad choices and gets into bad situations and then has to get himself out of them#but it's.....oh wait duh there's a term for this already#he's the straight man#he grounds all the zany nonsense by being in strong contrast to it#and he does a great job of it!#anyway#point is I deeply enjoyed this movie and I'm glad I finally watched it

Excuse the format (I made this for instagram since that's what the publisher wants, rip) but this is basically a shorter, easy-to-read version of the history section at the back of my new book.
(Part 2 || The book)
---
Disclaimer: I'm extremely not an expert, and this is only scratching the very surface of complex topics that are hard to simplify. I mostly made this to EXTREMELY rec these books and podcasts, and would urge you to go check them out if you're not familiar!!
This stuff might seem obvious to some of you, but let me tell you, I do NOT think it's widely known in the general UK population.
Imo a lot of the general (especially white) public think that the Windrush generation - Caribbean migrants brought in to help rebuild postwar Britain in the 50s - were the first Black communities in the UK. And yet there's deliberately not much focus on why the Caribbean has links with northern europe. HMMMM
(Britain loves, for example, to celebrate the abolition of slavery without mentioning WHAT CAME BEFORE IT - Britain being the biggest trader of enslaved people, with more than 1 million people enslaved in the British Caribbean. They literally just did it overseas.)
Telling the truth about history or British imperialism gets this massive manufactured backlash at the moment. There are so many ideas prevalent in UK politics - anti-Black, anti-refugee, anti-trans - based on going ‘back’ to some imaginary version of the past. Those are enabled by a long tradition of carving parts out of the historical record, and being selective about whose histories get told and preserved. Even though the book I was making is a fun rom-com, by the time I finished researching, I decided to make an illustrated history section at the back too (this is a mini version). My hope is that readers who haven’t come across these histories might get an introduction to them - and some pointers of what they could read next to get a clearer view of our past.
#i feel like it's also gone the other way a bit#where some people imagine a sanitised bridgerton version of historical britain where racism doesnt exist?#trying to speak to BOTH groups#but like. you can't understand british history without the white supremacy inherent in its empire building. that IS british history#can't overstate how impossible it was to read anything about 1800s england without being clobbered round the face with colonialism#anyway uk people pls read at least one imperial history book by someone who's not white AND not entrenched in establishment revisionism#i shall make a tag for this in the hope i do more#hari's history corner

maybe it’s because it’s “too obvious” but im surprised how few readings I’ve seen of the Substance (2024) that discuss the themes of addiction and substance (ha) use & abuse.
in moderation you can use the substance to become a better, more fun, easier, happier version of yourself. then you realize you no longer want to be who you are when you’re not on the substance. then taking the same dose that used to be enough before isn’t enough anymore, so you want to take more, and just a little bit more couldn’t hurt, right? so you start to take even more. but this is only taking away from sober you, which is painful and difficult and even scarier than what compelled you to take it in the first place, so of course you can’t stop now. now you want to take even more, you NEED to take even more. sober life becomes harder and harder to bear, especially compared to how much easier everything is on the substance. now you’re not only using it to enjoy that feeling anymore, you’re using it to hide from what you’re turning into without it, from what you’ve already turned into.
every minute that you’re sober is spent counting down the days until you can use again, and the ends of being high are spent dreading going back. the sober self is upset and jealous at how irresponsible the high self is. the high self is upset at how much of a buzzkill the sober self is, and wishes they could exist on their own, without requiring their sober tether to existence. but the sober and high selves are the same person, you are one, and you become jealous and angry at yourself for ruining your own life in a vain attempt to become an impossible version of yourself that you most desire to be.
you want so badly to have all—and only all—of the best parts that you milk yourself dry, until you end up with all—and nothing but all—of the bad parts. by the time you truly feel that you have indeed lost everything and know you need to stop, the damage is already done, and there is no going back. you wish you had stopped at the first chance, you wish you had never started to begin with. and even then for many people the only way to deal with this terrifying, painful reality is to use even more, because you have made this terrifying, painful life without your substance feel unliveable, even scarier yet than what had made you use in the first place. there is nothing left to do but to hide from your own life, and the only ways to do this are to stop, to love yourself and take care of the person that you are now… or to keep taking more and more, using until there is truly nothing left, not even yourself.
#the substance#the substance 2024#addiction#also obviously there’s lots of other stuff going on#with the movie in general it had many themes and none of them were subtle but still#I couldn’t stop thinking about this until I got it down#until I could get somebody else to be like yes I see you too#please this is very dark. take care of yourself#if you are struggling with addiction I see you. I care about you. I understand#and I understand how impossible it is to get off because of how scary it is to be without it#you aren’t alone#substance use#tw#shut up riley

It's kind of annoying (and weird) how DC keeps trying to rewrite how Jason and Bruce met to paint Bruce in a worst light.
Originally, Batman finds Jason stealing the Batmobile's tires, the kid runs away, and Batman finds him. Discovering the kid is homeless, he gives him to the authority and Jason finishes at Ma Gunn's school. Ma Gunn is actually teaching the kids to be gang members, so Jason tells Batman. Together, they win again Ma Gunn, and Bruce takes Jason in because he sees himself in him.
Well, in Nightwing: Year One, they change it for "Batman kidnapped Jason when he found him stealing his tires and forces him to become Robin", with Jason ATTACHED AND GAGGED in the batcave. (I like this comic except for that because wtf)
In Red Hood and The Outlaws (2011), they changed it for "Jason stole drugs from Leslie and Batman was ready to beat and throw a young teen in jail, but Leslie begged him to give him a chance", which again, wtf. Batman beating up a child. Okay.
In Red Hood and The Outlaws (2016), they changed it for "Bruce put Jason in Ma Gunn's school because he couldn't handle him after taking him in". The only good addition they made is "when Batman caught Jason stealing his tires, he bought him food".
I do not understand why they need to make him awful to this 12 years old so bad. What do they want to make it as if Bruce forced that life on Jason but also didn't want to deal with him. Why they cannot let it as it is, with Bruce having fun dealing with this lil shit that stole his tires and being there for him when he needs him later on, until he finally craves and takes Jason home.
And that's why I am so critical on how Batman and Bruce is written in Nightwing and Red Hood stories, because the writers are incapable to make their main character have conflict with Bruce, without changing his character and their story to make him abusive. They need him to be the bad guy of Jason's, and sometimes Dick's, story because they don't know how to make you side and care for their character without making the other side a monster.
#bruce wayne#batman#jason todd#robin#dick grayson#nightwing#dc comics#my ramblings#that's how you get Jason's fans that believe Bruce doesn't care or help the people struggling and Crime Alley#and doesn't understand this world which is NOT TRUE AT ALL#Bruce understands that people coming crimes because of their circonstances and he wants children to get the help their need#he literally has a breakdown in Gotham Knights because he refuses to believe a kid could kill his own parents#and after he talks about helping the kid he doesn’t even view this kid as a criminal because it's a kid#Jason's writers stop making Bruce treats him like trash challenge impossible#including Nightwing because they fucking love to write Bruce hitting Dick in Nightwing for some reasons

the scene in wano when sanji calls out for robin asking her to help him means so much to me. this is a man whose father looked him in the eyes when he was just a child asking for help when he was hurt and asked him “why should i?”, a man who had it ingrained in him that he didn’t deserve help and when he asked for it wouldn’t come, a lesson learnt the hard way in that dungeon. needing help is a sign of weakness and the last thing he was allowed to be was weak. sanji allowing himself to ask for help when he needs it really is a testimony to how far he has come, both since his childhood and since whole cake island. he knows it isn’t weak to ask for help and he knows, with absolute certainty, that when he calls his crew will answer. he goes from a child whose pleas were ignored to a man whose family will be there for him in a heartbeat. and on robins end, the fact that sanji trusts her so whole heartedly means so much to her and god they mean so much to me as a duo
#the amount of people who i’ve seen calling sanji weak in that scene#like just say you don’t understand sanji and move on#a women who was dubbed a devil when she was just a child#who spent her whole life wanted and on the run#being seen as evil and untrustworthy#being so wholeheartedly trusted to help a man who often finds it impossible to ask for help#because he was always denied to growing up#whatever#i don’t even care#i’m so fine and normal about them#one piece#black leg sanji#sanji one piece#vinsmoke sanji#nico robin#robin one piece#one piece robin

I find it incredibly funny seeing some fans complain that the movie wasn't "lore accurate" as if FNAF has ever been consistent with its lore, like
Wow, the movie changes a lot of stuff and is not accurate to what we thought we knew? *looks at The Silver Eyes trilogy* I can't believe that, how horrible *looks at The Silver Eyes trilogy* Who would've thought they'd change stuff that makes us doubt what we know about the series *looks at the fourth fucking closet*
#five nights at freddy's#fnaf#five nights at freddy's movie#fnaf movie#five nights at freddy's movie spoilers#fnaf movie spoilers#like come on guys we knew this was gonna happen#so what if the characters aren't exactly how they are in the games?#(or how we theorise them to be)#that's classic fnaf storytelling at this point#instead of getting mad that certain points weren't like the game understand the movie like the original books#parallel timeline where things aren't like the games#but some events mirror each other so you can get new details and perspectives to stuff you thought you knew#you need to know the games lore to fully understand the movie#so why wouldn't the movie also have something to offer to the games lore like they've always done?#we just need to figure out what#or not and just enjoy the movie#FNaF is not the kind of media that needs a 100% faithful adaptation#mostly because its impossible with how confusing and convoluted the story is#so just. you know. get your popcorn and have fun#i promise it's a lot better when you have that mindset#soratsu speaks

The thing is, it’s impossible to not have themes in your writing. The damn things pop up like mushrooms anywhere they detect the slightest hint of Story, even if you actively try to avoid them. And if you don’t thoughtfully choose which ones to cultivate and which ones to prune, that’s when the dry rot sets in and your whole house collapses.
#something stephen king failed to understand at least early in his career#credit where it's due the duffers are quite good at putting together a plot at least sometimes#they're just absolute ass at handling themes#and yeah it's harder to engage with your themes when you don't have a set endpoint in mind from the beginning#but! importantly! not impossible!
