H-3 airstrike
Based on the results achieved, it is considered one of the most successful raids in the history of aerial warfare.
Great Civilization

Ancient Iranian Carving Seized at a London Airport
An ancient sculpture illicitly carved from a rock relief in Iran will soon go on display at the British Museum before being repatriated to the National Museum in Tehran.
Carved in calcareous limestone, the sculpture depicts a standing male figure with an ornamental headdress. The piece likely hails from the 3rd century C.E. when the Sasanian Empire ruled greater Iran, according to the Guardian.
“It belongs to a period when Iran was the center of a powerful empire stretching from Syria to the Caucasus and Central Asia, and with its capital at Ctesiphon, south of present-day Baghdad,” St. John Simpson, an archaeologist and senior curator the British Museum’s department of the Middle East, told the paper. “The Sasanians were powerful rivals of Rome, and famous today for their fine silverwares and cut glass.”
The relief was seized at the Stansted airport outside of London, where border officers pulled the item aside because of its suspicious packaging—an unpadded, slapdash crate held together by nails. Inside was the carving, which had recently been excised with an angle grinder.
“We almost never come across a case of something being cut out of the ‘living rock,’” Simpson said. “That’s a level of brutalism that surpasses anything.”
Exactly where the carving came from remains a mystery, though context clues may help to narrow the list of potential locations. Roughly only 30 Sasanian rock reliefs are known to exist today, and almost all them came from the small Fars Province in southwest Iran.
Simpson suspects it “comes from somewhere in the Shiraz area” of the province. “Stylistically, it is similar to one known in the region,” he explained. “I think it probably is part of a big sequence. There might be more bits out there.”
The subject of the piece is similarly difficult to determine. “The lack of an inscription makes it impossible to identify the person depicted, but his dress and diademed headdress signifies him as a person of high rank,” the curator said. “His gesture of greeting and submission, with a raised bent forefinger, is a feature of Sasanian art when figures are in the presence of royalty, which suggests that this was part of a larger composition, with the king to the right and perhaps other figures behind.”
Interpol and the National Crime Agency have both investigated the object, but no arrests have yet been made. An internet auction site in the U.K. was listed as the package’s destination address, but the company claimed not to be expecting it.
Because of its poor padding, the relief broke in two pieces during transport. Conservators have since put it back together.
“The British Museum is committed to contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage in the U.K. and globally, partnering with law enforcement agencies to identify illicitly trafficked antiquities,” read a statement from the museum. “Objects seized in this way are brought to the British Museum for identification and cataloguing.”
The London institution obtained permission from the Iranian government to display the carving for three months. After that time, it will be repatriated to the National Museum in Tehran.
Simpson called the newly repaired piece “stunningly attractive,” before weighing in on its potential worth.
“The valuation could be anything, really. We’re talking £20 million to £30 million-plus,” ($25 million to $37 million) he said. “There’s never been anything like it on the market.”

You know, it bothers me the way it seems like people have totally forgot about Iranians... thought we were all on the same page, wasn't it... women, life, freedom? (I legit don't remember, but the reason for that is it wasn't my slogan to say. Maybe it sounds strange, but that's how I felt, so I never actually wrote it, which makes it harder to remember)
Just feels like for a brief window there we were all talking big talk about supporting them, but then it all kinda dried up
I'll be totally transparent about one of the reasons this keeps coming up for me, russia is a major ally of Iran, Iran supplies the kamikaze drones russia hits civilians with... you know they're not giving them away for free... I worry what the Iranian government uses anything it gets to do... I don't really hear anything from Iranians anymore (though once again I fully admit that most of what I was hearing was second hand, I never had found an Iranian to directly follow... I don't know if anyone's still talking)
I just... I legit worry that people talk a big game about Gaza right now, but will they in a year?
I'm frustrated because a lot of the support people and causes around the world get seems like it's almost more self masturbatory than anything real... sure, everyone really well and truly means it, but then they get bored and it's on to a new cause
So I worry the support will be fleeting... and I see some people really getting down in the mud in ways... well, I'm not a people keeper, I don't get to tell people what to do, but I wouldn't be very pleased if I was acting the way I see some people act and my real point is I worry they're doing all this shit and they're not even gonna stick it out with the cause... seen people get bored and dip to many times to trust it
I'm not perfect... I have a shit memory a lot of the time, and I got a lot on my mind, but I still remember Hong Kong... at least sometimes... even looked into it from time to time and the news never looks good
I remember the Uyghurs, though my shit spelling always makes me look it back up. I think about Syria and how forgotten they are. I do actually still keep up with Ukraine... and then I see connections between russia and Iran and assad and...
I don't know... this stuff eats a me a little... not a lot, not more than the helplessness we all feel about bad things beyond our control usually does... I just worry about people, how they act with shit
Worry that you roll around in the mud too long it starts getting hard to wash off, and I worry that people sometimes get in the mud less cause they're trying to help anything and more cause sometimes it feels good to have an excuse to get dirty... righteous anger that makes any behavior permissible
I don't talk about current events that are on everyone's radar nonstop cause I don't want to burn support out by just overloading people with horror... but I generally find murdering innocent people to be a bad thing, so yeah... I want to see a fucking ceasefire already
Don't talk about it, but I actually do care quite a bit... and I worry... I worry that it'll be forgotten the second the news cycle moves on like everything else is
Worry that every bit of vile behavior I've seen that was for high minded goals will turn out to be dropped in an instant...
Almost like that's not a bug, that's just the point
#sorry; no reblogs for this one... I'm not letting someone 5 reblogs outside my sphere start going on about something insane#I don't like talking politics and I don't like talking discourse#both to keep things civil and cause frankly I don't need the stress of arguing with people online#not when I don't think it'll be a good faith conversation; when I don't think it's a disagreement in how to make things better#just that I need to totally agree with everything they say; and really they just like arguing#but certain things eat at me... the way people act eats at me#and seriously; I mean every word; it eats at me every time I think about how forgotten this stuff seems#I think people meant their support; but where is it now?#I don't think I've seen Iran mentioned in like a year#I don't know how to help... believe me; if I could play Captain America and save the day I would#if I could give Iranians the freedom they asked for I would in a heartbeat#I don't know how... not like congress listens to me or I'd change a lot#kill that kosa bill or whatever the horrible acronym is... sent one of those auto email things about it but.. just one voice#lot I'd change... wish I had energy to do more#you know; friend of mine often talks about this group in Iraq that's faced a lot of genocide; she's American but she's worked with them#love if I could do more to help there too... reblog when she says stuff though I know we all have limited bandwidth#I don't know... it bothers me though... it's like we're led around by the nose when the news cycle changes#not saying not to care about what's happening now; but when the other stuff didn't stop happening...#and then there's the fact that frankly even people I like a great deal; absolutely adore...#I see them... slipping... getting into some nasty behavior... and I worry#but I doubt they'd listen much... the times I try to nudge don't seem to get much results#and if someone won't listen pushing harder does nothing#...who's to say I even know a thing? that my morality isn't broken in ways I can't see?#but I worry... I worry about people... I worry how easy it is to manipulate good and smart people I know#and I worry about everyone that we seem to keep forgetting#worry a whole lot; a lot of the time... about policy and international relations and about who we're choosing to be as people#but would you believe this is just background stuff for my depression?#this is just the seasoning for why I should blow my brains out; it's rarely why I say I should#in spite of all that worry it's not even the main thing that makes me want to die... just stuff I can gesture to and be like... that too#I'm tired... wish I could... wish I could tell the people I see slipping to grow up... to step up... but I don't think I can

Ancient Iranian Language: Sogdian
Tumblr media
Sogdian was an ancient Iranian language that was spoken in the region of Sogdiana, located in present-day Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, during the Sogdian period (5th century BCE to 10th century CE). Sogdiana was an important cultural and trading center along the Silk Road, and the Sogdians played a significant role in the exchange of goods, ideas, and languages between East and West.
Here are some key points about the Sogdian language:
Classification: Sogdian is an Eastern Iranian language belonging to the larger Indo-European language family. It is closely related to other ancient Iranian languages such as Avestan, Old Persian, and Bactrian.
Writing System: Sogdian had its own unique writing system known as the Sogdian script. The script was derived from the Aramaic alphabet but had significant modifications to represent the specific phonetic and phonological features of Sogdian. It was written from right to left, and early Sogdian inscriptions have been found on stone, wood, and other materials.
Linguistic Features: Sogdian had both vowel and consonant sounds. It had a complex phonological system with contrasts between short and long vowels, as well as vowel harmony. The language also had a rich inventory of consonant sounds, including fricatives, affricates, and stops.
Role in the Silk Road: Sogdian traders and merchants were known for their extensive involvement in the Silk Road trade network. Sogdian communities were established along the trade routes, and their language became a lingua franca for communication between various peoples in Central Asia, China, and the Middle East.
Extensive Textual Evidence: The Sogdians left behind a significant amount of written material, providing valuable insights into their language and culture. The majority of surviving Sogdian texts are business and legal documents, but there are also Buddhist, Manichaean, and Nestorian Christian religious texts, as well as personal letters and inscriptions.
Decline: The decline of the Sogdian language began around the 8th century CE due to various factors, including the Arab conquests of Central Asia and the spread of Islam. The language gradually gave way to Persian and other Turkic languages spoken by the incoming Turkic and Arab populations. By the 10th century CE, Sogdian had ceased to be a spoken language.
Today, Sogdian is considered an extinct language, but scholars continue to study and decipher the surviving Sogdian texts to gain a better understanding of the language, culture, and history of the Sogdian people.

The Syrian government's key allies in the civil war - Russia, Iran and the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah - have committed aid to government-controlled areas of Syria. Aid donated by a number of other countries, including China, Sudan, Algeria, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates, has also arrived, according to Syrian state media. The BBC saw Russian aid delivered via lorries to a hub at a church in Aleppo. And Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported that a sixth shipment of Iranian aid had arrived. Neighbouring Lebanon meanwhile confirmed that it would open its ports and airports for countries wanting to send aid to Syria. In contrast, opposition-held areas of north-west Syria have only seen a trickle of aid delivered by the UN via Turkey. Mr Mekdad said the Syrian government was committed to "delivering humanitarian aid to all those in need, in all areas, without any discrimination". But groups in the opposition enclave are not currently accepting aid from the government, fearing a propaganda victory for Damascus.

Hey everyone! Toomaj Salehi’s death sentence was overturned! The most recent article I could find says he is still in jail though. Please keep sharing, because people to need to understand what’s happening. According to Amnesty International, Iran carried out 74% of the world’s executions in 2023, not including executions from China since they don’t release those numbers. The execution rate is growing higher with 67 executions in June alone, 48 of which were ethnic minorities despite all together being only 40% of the population. Their crimes are protesting the government for murdering women. Please keep sharing, because while there are many injustices happening far away that can’t be stopped by posting, the Say Their Names to Save Their Lives Movement works.
The Iranian Regime is going to execute rapper Toomaj Salehi for supporting protests of Jina Amini’s murder by the regime in his songs.
Iranian activist Elica Le Bon says, “Iranians in the diaspora picked up on the fact that the regime tends not to execute people who become known to the international community. We have seen many examples of prisoners that were either released on bail or had their sentences commuted through our “say their names to save their lives” campaign on social media, using hashtags to garner attention for their causes, and even before social media existed, through getting the stories of political prisoners to international media outlets. Once reported on, and once the eyes shift to the regime and the reality of its pending brutality, realizing that the action is not worth the repercussions, we have seen them back down and not execute. For that reason, this is part of an urgent campaign for readers to talk about Toomaj as much as you can, using the hashtag #FreeToomaj or #ToomajSalehi. Every comment makes a difference, and if we were wrong, what did we lose by trying?”

Iran urges regional unity against Israeli strikes in Syria, US and Tel Aviv labelled “major conspirators” of events in Damascus
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi called on the international community to take immediate action to prevent further Israeli strikes on Syria, which have caused widespread damage to both defence and civilian infrastructure, while the Islamic Republic’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said Iran has evidence that the regime change process in Syria was planned by the US and Israel with the assistance of a certain “neighbouring country.”
Co-operation between Israel and Syria’s defence minister
Following the collapse of the Syrian regime and Bashar al-Assad’s flight to Moscow, opposition groups took control of Damascus. Israel responded with dozens of targeted airstrikes on military installations inside Syria to prevent sensitive weapons from reaching groups it considers a threat and to protect its borders.
Israel’s advances in the provinces of Suweida and Quneitra effectively ended a previous disengagement agreement with Syria. Israeli officials say the operations are designed to keep advanced weapons out of the hands of the opposition and ensure that hostile groups are outnumbered.
Leaked documents obtained by The Media Line reveal alleged co-operation between former Syrian defence minister Lieutenant General Ali Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli intermediaries via encrypted messaging apps. The documents claim that an Israeli agent under the nickname “Musa” communicated with the Assad regime to coordinate strikes on Iranian positions near Damascus and Aleppo.
Iranian interference in Syria since the beginning of the uprising has helped strengthen the Assad regime, but has also made Syria a frequent target for Israeli strikes. This, in turn, has seriously undermined Syria’s military capabilities.
The US and Israel have been labelled “major conspirators” of events in Syria
Iran has evidence that the process of power change in Syria was planned by the US and Israel with the assistance of some “neighbouring country,” the Islamic Republic’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei said during an address to citizens.
“There should be no doubt that what has happened in Syria is a joint plan of the Americans and Zionists. Yes, one country neighbouring Syria also played its role and is still playing it,” the statesman noted.
He stressed, however, that the US and Israel were the “main conspirators.” The Iranian leadership has relevant evidence, Khamenei said.
Iran urges mobilisation to stop Israel’s attacks on Syria
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi called on the international community to take immediate action to prevent further Israeli strikes on Syria, which have caused widespread damage to both defence and civilian infrastructure.
In a post on social media platform X on Wednesday, Araghchi condemned Israel’s continued attacks on Syria after the fall of the government in Damascus over the weekend.
“The Israeli regime has destroyed almost all defence and civilian infrastructure in Syria,” he wrote.
Since Sunday, the Israeli military has carried out more than 500 airstrikes in Syria and withdrawn its troops beyond the so-called buffer zone in the occupied Golan Heights and deep into Syrian territory, in what has been condemned as a new scheme of “land grabbing” by the occupation regime.
The foreign minister stressed that Israel has not only damaged vital facilities in Syria, but also expanded its occupation of Syrian territory, violating the 1974 disengagement agreement and UN Security Council Resolution 350.
Araghchi also called on Syria’s neighbours and the entire Arab and Muslim world to sort out the situation.
Syria’s opposition is dissatisfied with the new government
Syria’s armed opposition will form a new nationwide army, local media reported, citing a commander of the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA).
“The current forces will dissolve into the new troops,” the publication’s interlocutor said. He noted that the armed forces will be trained by instructors from another country, without specifying which one. At the same time, some former military structures of the opposition will continue to function during the transition period.
The SNA spokesman assured that the armed forces will include representatives of all ethno-religious groups in Syria.
In addition, he said that there have been conflicts between the SNA and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in the past.
“The differences have not been completely overcome until now, but Syrian interests require us to participate in the battles for the liberation of Syria with the conviction that Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s project is not suitable for Syria,” the commander explained.
He also said that the SNA’s offensive against Kurdish militias aims to “end the separatists project.” The SNA is advancing near the town of Sirrin ash Shamaliyah in Aleppo province south of the Kurdish-held city of Kobani.

Iran's last regime change was west-backed (fuck Carter, we all hate his ass in Iran) and the regime change before that was also west-backed (Mossadegh) and the regime change before that (Qajar fall). Isn't the west tired of this game?
Though it will be poetic for Carter to outlive IRI, people are tired and distrustful of this game. There is no real opposition going in, inside and outside, just general disdain and sadness. I guess Khamenei's next course of action would determine his own survival.
the only alternative i see is that the iranian regime implements some radical reform and makes an effort to befriend the west, or at least distance themselves from our rivals. i don't see them doing this. and if they don't, then it seems pretty obvious that things are headed toward regime change.
or what else do you suggest? maybe you see some path forward that i don't. or should we just maintain the status quo? is that preferable?

The Conflict of East and West: A Unarist Perspective and Introduction, Part II
This is the second part of a standalone article, separate from but complementary to, the Iran-Bidar Political Manifesto and one of many that will shed light on and eventually introduce the ideology of Unarism.
The conflict between East and Western branches of Indo-European civilization is complex and multifaceted. There is the overt, geography bound conflict involving flashpoints in the Middle East, North Africa and the Levant. There is also the culture war and internal turmoil within Western societies with respect to immigrants from the Islamic world. And both of these spheres of the conflict are marred by incorrect, age-old prejudices from both the Western perspective and the Islamic perspective. Since the goal of Unarism is the coagulation of all of humankind into one body while simultaneously respecting the differences, identities and complementarity of different human groups, it is of utmost importance to inoculate readers in both the West and the Islamic world against the manufactured hatred between them, identify those who stand to profit from this hatred, and begin the mental and physical work of bridging both of these spheres of Indo-European civilization.
The foundational goal of Unarism is to prepare humanity to both evolve through space colonization and expansion of its living space, and to nurture its genesis-world, Earth, from the ravages of the past four hundred years of unfettered, profit-driven growth. Unarism recognizes that difference points between human groups exist and are inevitable because geography and its endowments are unequal and history reflects this, and this gives rise to unique cultures and worldviews, but most of these cultures and worldviews- amply demonstrated by the similarities between ideologies and world religions- have common roots. Therefore, Unarism sets itself a dual task of raising the cultural and national consciousness of these disparate human groups by emphasizing positive nationalism and positive consciousness, which emphasizes the complementarity of human groups. If humans are to unite as a planet and embark to the vastness of the solar system and beyond, they must recognize how unique geographies predispose each group to certain advantages and disadvantages, and instead of zeroing in on these differences as flashpoints and geneses of human friction, appreciate the ways in which these unique features can form a multi-billion piece human tapestry that works in tandem to further and evolve the entire species. As natural selection left its mark on different people- mountain-origin people better suited to survive in those regions and climes, along with the necessary tools and worldviews, and likewise maritime peoples, and so on and so forth, it also laid the groundwork and starting points for human cooperation on an unprecedented scale. What's needed then is a common, human collective will- not ad-hoc and reactive like promoting world peace, which hasn't succeeded thus far, but superseding it. Through a collective determination to transcend Earth, colonize space, make use of resources beyond Earth and evolve the human species' capacities, all human groups will have no choice but to eschew fratricidal war and embrace intra-species cooperation. This also holds true for undoing the damage done by climate change.
This is a massive undertaking, which is why our movement has a longitudinal view. But massive undertakings must start from somewhere, and must be broken down into components that are capable of being carried out. An advantage of our worldview is that it is at the root biological, and not divorced from reality, and therefore stands- if operationalized correctly- to revolutionize human relations and bring its ideas to fruition. There are those that would call this ideology and movement internationalist- we disagree. Our movement is multi-pronged, incorporating nationalism as a means of human species liberation. Internationalism is myopic in the sense that it takes for granted a human species limited to the confines of the earth. Therefore, it makes sense to see Unarism as a movement of grassroots species liberation, that begins with nationalism as its foundation. But it begs us to consider, why does internationalism seldom work? There are two conceptions of internationalist praxis, one being grassroots, the other being top-down or vanguardist. A topic to expand on in the future, it suffices to say that grassroots efforts often fail because they lack ideological tools that correspond to reality, and thus their blindspots are exacerbated by forces reacting to them, and these blindspots grow and devour these movements. Vanguardism hardly works in a revolutionary sense as it merely replaces one ruling clique with another; despite ideology, it often finds itself either establishing new hierarchies or assuming extant ones and becoming trapped by them. Vanguardism also requires a clique that has access to the means by which to marshal entire societies to their worldview, which often means access to moneyed backers and with that, their interests take precedence as support in politics is not lent for free. Support in fact comes with manacles, particularly the support of extant power-brokers and those with financial means. And thus, vanguardist movements are simply not in the position to be revolutionary; and they manifest eventually as more of the same.
Many questions likely arise from our discussion of and seeming exaltation of "Indo-European" elements. This is largely because the cultural link between today's civilizational clash is Indo-European; as explained above the clash between East- Islam and Eastern Orthodox Christianity and West- Western Christianity in Europe and the Americas- is an intra-civilizational clash, in the greater Indo-European cultural sphere. This is why, if Unarism is to unite humanity and foster cooperation, it must highlight the commonalities that overshadow the differences that are being exacerbated to set the two camps against each other for the few to profit and exploit. Unarism's positive nationalism is not one of supremacy or chauvinism, but one of appreciating the uniqueness and compatibility elements, and fostering human alliances that will be necessary should our species survive Earth, undo the damage it has done to it, and reach beyond Earth. Therefore, the first order of things is to educate an alternative, truer narrative on the East-West conflict and promote movements that would create peace, stability and cooperation. Present internationalist movements and influences are expressly not aimed at fostering this amity and cooperation but at causing and exploiting friction to profit from war and oppression. True human cooperation appreciates the biological reality of politics and human groups, and sees in human differences the key to intra-species cooperation and the future evolution of humanity. It sees and appreciates difference with the aim to use it to move beyond difference. When difference is posed to us, we can either use it to foment conflict and end the human race, or we can see how our differences are cause for cooperation for the future evolution of our great species. Thus, it follows that we seek to identify those that would stand to profit from the war between East and West, to help movements of cooperation and identity flourish, to disarm extremists on both sides that seek to perpetuate this war- for they are useful fools in the pockets of profiteers- and foster a healthy appreciation of reality, identifying grounds for cooperation, alliance, prosperity, stability, and above all, the common goal of human evolution and expansion.
With this brief summary of the general theories of Unarism, we arrive at why Iran-Bidar is the right movement to bridge Iran with the other great cultures and become the spark for the revolution of human evolution and cooperation. The first order of things is to approach the conflicts of today from a new, non-neoconservative perspective. One that is objective, one that appreciates the cultural realities and the facts of history, and from this point creates inroads to a better future. This process is not only important for Iran and Iranians, but is crucial for Iran to be part of. Because of aforementioned cultural elements, and because of Iran's long-standing influence in the Islamic world, Iran stands, as Russia does for Orthodoxy, in a unique position to foster cooperation and peace between the West and East. To this end it is actively trying to combat movers that would benefit from this clash, as are some elements in the West. What is needed is more dialogue and a worldview that gives both camps a reason to come together and work together for the betterment of humanity, but also a worldview that identifies the existing problems and seeks to address them.

10 5⁄8 in. (27 cm.) long.
Formed of hammered sheet gold, this long plaque is ornamented in repoussé and enhanced by incision with a frieze of stags walking to the right. There are perforations along the edges for attachment, perhaps to leather or cloth. These two joining fragments are thought to be part of the Ziwiye Treasure, a hoard of ancient objects in precious metal and other materials found on the ancient citadel on Ziwiye in Kurdestan, east of Saqqiz in Northwestern Iran, now widely dispersed in museum and private collections.

Three months in the U.S., a young Iranian studying civil engineering in Indiana explained the Oil Nationalization movement in his homeland. At stake, he said, was “the peace and security of the whole Middle East in general and Iran in particular”.

A reminder that the 'Palestinians for Trump' campaign is nothing close to unprecedented:
Though there's only been one prior folly to match, or exceed it, in the long sad history of Palestinian leaders failing their people by unerringly seizing on the path of the greatest self-destruction on a scale of collective suicidal stupidity. Namely the dumbfucks in 1990, including the then-head of the PLO, who decided that when a certain Saddam Hussein decided to make Kuwait Iraq's 19th province that the annexation was going to stick. They spent the war actively enabling the Iraqi occupation and looting of Kuwait that did happen, if not to the degree wartime propaganda exaggerated that it did.
And then when the Emir got his throne back, the Iraqi Army proved to be the kind of shambolic force that with two superpowers and an infinite Soviet budget of weaponry narrowly survived hordes of suicidal teenagers with keys around their necks against a force actually competent unlike the Iranian army of the 1980s (no, bravery is not competence).......well, suddenly the Emir decided he didn't want a huge pro-Iraqi fifth column when Saddam was still his next door neighbor and they were expelled for that.
It is very specifically Palestinian-Americans running this "Muslims for Trump" chickens for KFC campaign, because that is what their self-appointed leaders have always found ways to do when this shouldn't repeat itself on this unerring scale, and yet it does and has. Few people have paid as steep a price for the vainglory of self-appointed overlords as Palestinians have done, do, and continue to do.

This depends on what counts as active use! I can name six calendars still in reasonably-active use offhand and at least six more that were still in use at some point after WW2 (some of which might still be used in contexts I'm less familiar with).
...actually no, make that seven: Christian (or however we're calling the calendar used by most of the world), lunar Islamic, solar Islamic (Iran), Hebrew, Thai, Japanese [regnal], Ethiopian. And that's just the ones that are actively used on circulating coins. ...darn, forgot Nepalese. Eight. I'm pretty sure there's a few more that I'm missing at the moment. [Ugh, just remembered Taiwanese. And I think North Korea has one too?]
(The after-WW2 ones: the funky Iranian one they used for a while when they went away from the Islamic years, Korean, Saka [various Indian princely states], Seleucid [Yemenite Jews*], and I forgot what the other two were; possibly some of the calendars I ended up reclassifying as currently used. A bunch more briefly actively used calendars became obsolete as a result of WW2. Vatican used to date their coins in papal regnal years [usually in parallel with the AD date] at least into the reign of John XXIII [1958-63 AD] but I'm not sure if they still do? [Looked it up; apparently technically they still do but only on commemoratives rather than general-issue euro coinage.] I think some other regnal and/or revolutionary years also came up in a few contexts. Mongolia comes to mind for the latter specifically as used on coins but AFAIK the latest coins to use that calendar were contemporary with WW2.)
I do have to admit that (I feel like) we should probably use more stuff like "since the foundation of the republic".
(And also yeah, if the state of the world changes sufficiently to make calendars counting by years impractical and/or inconvenient, we might indeed end up with a situation where people legitimately don't know which year it is. Or for that matter with a situation where the answer to which year it is depends on whose standard on year length you're following.)
(Alternately we could, even without all that much change, end up in a situation to the effect of "of course we know which year it is, it's the consulate of Catulus and Lepidus**", whereas the local default calendric reference does not actually include any kind of meaningful numeric order of the years.)
*) Technically the Jewish legal code explicitly prescribes the use of the Seleucid calendar in some legal contexts! But apparently this was only kept up into the post-WW1 era as a living tradition in Yemen.
[Which reminds me, "different calendars legally used for different purposes" is also a thing that I feel like there really should be more of. I believe British statutes are still officially numbered in regnal years, and Israel insists on doing holidays by the Judaic calendar even as (e.g.) ages of majority had been relegated to the Christian calendar, but other than that and the Seleucid thing I'm failing to think of any other examples.]
**) This is actually [part of] the date of the oldest known inscription in Pompeii. I wonder if the people who found that had to look up the consuls in a table; it's about 150 years prior to the period you'd expect Pompeian inscriptions to have been written in.
It only happens rarely but I'm always slightly annoyed at sci-fi stories that are like "oh we don't know what year it is anymore"
Bullshit. Humans love calendars, and there's nothing special about the gregorian xalendar's epoch. Just make a new one.
At least in The Matrix I think we can interpret the canon as there being a new calendar, Morpheus just never bothers telling it to Neo because "years since the founding of Zion" would be meaningless to him. He just says we don't know the gregorian date.
But Transmetropolitan has no excuse. There's no year and no one has come up with a replacement epoch.
