@dduane found this on Out Of Ambit, and wants me to make it again as an entry for The Mind Palate.
Also to get better photos, because the one accompanying the original post is...
Unimpressive.

"Savoury mud" is what I called it then, and have no reason to change that opinion - but regardless of how unprepossessing it looks, It Tastes Just Great.
I'm thinking that some red and green pepper pieces would add a bit of colour, and wouldn't hurt the flavour. Maybe kidney beans, too...
That vaguely yellowish thing in the middle is a large chunk of butter, with which DD will happily garnish rice, kasha, colcannon, champ, porridge (with brown sugar) and of course a nice big baked potato.
*****
I've amended the recipe slightly, reducing the oil and salt by half and adding metric measurements - which are approximate, everything about this is approximate. It was literally something I just threw together without, as it says, referring to a cookbook or buying in anything special.
That said, I do recommend using ghee for Indian cooking if you can get any. It's very easy to make at home, similar to clarifying butter except for taking longer since it involves cooking (browning) the separated-out milk protein on the bottom of the pot to add flavour. There's plenty of ghee-making advice on-line.
OK, here's that recipe...
*****
Improvised store-cupboard dhal (dal, daal etc.) for when you can’t be bothered with a cookbook then going to the shop for more elaborate ingredients.
Ingredients:
½ cup / 125 ml vegetable oil OR 125g ghee (better flavour)
2 large onions, chopped fine
4-6 cloves garlic, chopped fine
1 tbsp. each of ground cumin, ground coriander
½ tbsp. each of ground turmeric, ground chilli, ground black pepper
½ tbsp. each of mild curry powder & hot curry powder (optional)
½ tsp. salt
2 cups / 500 g red lentils
½ cup / 125 g green lentils
½ cup / 125 g brown lentils
Boiling water
1 tbsp. lemon juice
Method:
Heat the oil, fry the onions & garlic until soft and glossy.
Add all the spices and fry for a few minutes.
Add all the lentils and stir everything together*.
Add enough boiling water to cover by ½ an inch.
Stir everything together, reduce heat, cover and simmer for about ½ an hour. Check occasionally, adding more water if required, a bit at a time then stir. (Don’t overdo the water. Preferred texture is like stew, not soup.)
Add lemon juice, stir, and serve with rice and / or breads like chapatti, roti or naan.
My recipe for naan is here.

This dhal makes a good side with shop-bought tandoori chicken.
*Alternately add lightly fried chicken or lamb cubes and 2 x cans of chopped tomatoes along with the lentils, reducing the amount of water accordingly. Simmer for ¾ hour, serve when meat is cooked, and call it a dhansak.
(It isn’t really. But it's delicious.)

I’m aware I have the easy side of it being light skinned but it does never cease to amaze me how stunned people are that there is a huge variety and diversity of looks in South Asia like that is the most populous area of the world and probably the most genetically diverse there are people who look any way you can possibly think of there and yet white people think they have a copyright on having blue eyes
#can’t even imagine the shit East Indians or black south Asians have to hear#an East Indian guy worked at the Indian store I used to frequent and he told me he constantly has people pretending they don’t understand#his hindi

my go to sewing project whenever i want to make something but don't want to think about it is to make a huge box dress i love to sleep in/wear around the house i don't even need a pattern for it i can draft it straight onto the fabric and sew it with a needle and thread while lying in bed. long slits from the knee down so i can move around comfortably. they're my comfort clothes + they are esp so comfy when i'm in m'sia with the heat& humidity. but even in canada i wear them always i just add a sweater
#i make them out of indian cotton block printed bedspreads i get from the thrift store#i find a lot of those locally bc most ppl in my area are south asian lol

Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #425
Guess what!!! Guess what!!! Guess what!!!
...
...You'll never guess!!! So I'll tell you!!!
J and I went to a new kind of grocery store today!!! It was a grocery store that caters specifically to people from India and Pakistan and lots of other places, too!
And do you know what!! I found all sorts of things that are common in other parts of the world, but still I haven't heard of them or seen them before!! It was so exciting to see so many new things!! I didn't get any of them because I don't know how to prepare them properly, but I did get all kinds of cool pictures! Check 'em out!!

...Here are some other things that I do know about, but are not found in the typical grocery stores in my part of the world:

I was particularly excited about the green tomatoes!! I love making fried green tomatoes, but I almost never see them in typical grocery stores! But now that I have a reliable source, I might be able to make them (and therefore show you how to make them!)!
...And here are some cheeses! Obviously, I know what cheese is. I'm just including pictures because it's my favorite!!

...I got the variety pack pictured in the black box just above. Because I am the cheese goblin. It has been written. It is known. And you know it, too, because I've written it to you before!! Wahahaha!
Also!!! They had this giant huge spice section!

...I got this thing!! Because I know about black garlic; it's some very tasty stuff!! It's nice to be able to have a version of it that I can just sprinkle on things! I can't wait to put this to good use!!!

J got this thing, because he likes hibiscus!

They had a meat section too, with all kinds of things that I don't usually see in the more typical grocery stores in my area!! I assume all of these things are absolutely delectable when properly prepared!! I assume the lamb head is used to make soups and stocks...

...It's good to see that so many cultures use all parts of the animal. I got the goat liver, because I'm a little weird in that I really like liver. It's got a very rich, intense flavor that I enjoy a lot, and it's one of the most nutritious foods on the planet; it's chock full of minerals and proteins and all kinds of good stuff!! But you can't eat too much of it in one sitting because then you'll get too much vitamin A and die!!
...Well actually. Maybe you wouldn't die of too much vitamin A? I dunno how the mako infusions or the Jenova cells change your physiology. But! I divided the liver into 4 parts of equal weight, because I'm the only one in the house who will eat it (most people think liver is gross); if I were to eat it all by myself, I might end up getting sick from too much vitamin A.
...Just to be safe, try not to eat too much of it at once, if you ever try it someday, okay?
Anyway!! I found some other cool things, but I didn't get them. Like this stuff that came in a pretty tin!

...And this tea, which I guess turns pink when you add milk!

...I wonder... if I were to mix this tea with my blue tea... would I get a purple tea...? I guess I'll have to try it sometime...!!!
...I did get these, though. These are significant for reasons that have to do with an inside joke. Maybe you remember what kinds of sharks these are... because they're blue. I've talked about it before.

I also got these dried apricots. I love dried apricots (seriously, I could eat a whole container of them by myself, but my intestines would rebel, I'm sure...), but I've never seen ones that aren't treated with sulfur dioxide; sulfur dioxide allows the apricot to retain its orange color as it's drying. The apricots on the right weren't treated with sulfur dioxide; you can tell because they're dark brown.

...The apricots on the right taste A LOT better. Like... they're sweeter, and the flavor in general is a little more complex. But they're also more expensive; I wonder why...
...Finally... we saw some various ice creams. Here's the display case; look at the flavors inside, and I'll let you guess which one we brought home to try. Tomorrow, I'll tell you if your guess was right!

(yes, I am leaving you in suspense – again! – becaue I'm mean and horrible and evil and stuff! you'll just have to survive until tomorrow to find out! neener, neener, neener!!)
...After I got home, I began working on the glass bottle I cut the other day. Before going to the Indian grocery store, M and I went to the art store to pick up something important that I forgot last time. I scrapped all the lines I applied to the bottle yesterday, in favor of drawing new ones with the new material:

...Then I went ahead and painted the bottle.

It still needs to dry. It'll look even better once it's fully dried. I'm probably going to have to touch up a few areas tomorrow, but that's all right. Hopefully, this will make a suitable vessel for the flowers I got for An; we have tentative plans to meet up on Tuesday, though I'm not sure where just yet. I suggested the Starbucks, because he said to keep it simple, and we've been there before, and to my mind, familiar is simple, and it's also inexpensive and close to his house, and these are also simple things, in my mind. But he hasn't responded yet.
...I assume he's busy, but... part of me is worried that I interpreted his words too literally and he's mad at me now; after all, it wouldn't be the first time someone got upset with me for following their guidelines and requests a little too closely. I'm hoping that he's not that kind of person, but... I really don't know. I've only known him for a little while, and I'm not yet familiar with his patterns and way of thinking.
...I'm still scared of accidentally messing everything all up. Most people think of me as some kind of weird, annoying, and vaguely unsettling and discomforting thing, and... I have no evidence to suggest that he'll perceive me any differently than most.
I assume that you know something about what this is like; I saw the way the other Shinra troops treated you while you were looking for your locket. You were misunderstood, and they didn't even try to understand you, and seeing it happen to you in the same way it happens to me... gosh, even just thinking about it makes my blood boil. Me, I can understand because I'm kinda freaky, but you of all people don't deserve that kind of treatment.
...I guess I'll just keep trying to be brave until he tells me directly to shut up and go away. Which... I hope he does, if that's what he wants me to do (though I hope that's not what he wants me to do). I'm no good at guessing games, but I am good at respecting people's boundaries, if/when they're said to me.
Well, I guess that's it for today. It is well past my bedtime, and I am definitely entering “zombie pumpkin” territory. I will stop writing now and go to bed.
I love you. Be good. Stay safe. You'll definitely wanna know the ice cream flavor I got!
I'll tell you all about it when I write to you tomorrow.
Your friend, Lumine

random question lol but are you like indian/pakistani? im assuming you live in the UK because you're giving gcses but your name is very south asian?? sorry if this is rude i was just curious of you have south asian roots
you’re right! i do live in the uk, not a very proud brit, but still a brit 😟 i did my gcses nearly 2 years ago (class of 2023) :D
nothing you said sounded rude at all anon, dww! 😭💞
sumaya’s actually a pseudonym. this is actually mentioned in my ‘about me’ link on the pinned post, but not many ppl click that so i’m not too surprised that you don’t know this haha 🥴
i picked sumaya ‘cause it was gonna be my actual name, but then my parents decided otherwise, so it’s not my real name. i wanted to separate my real life from my tumblr-life and thought, ‘what’s a name that still holds some semblance of me?’ and then i remembered the name i was going to be given!
i’m also pretty sure sumaya’s an arabic name 🌝
but aside from the pseudonym, everything else about my life that i randomly tell you guys on here is real 😋
but you’re right again, i am south asian! 😋 but i’m not indian or pakistani haha. this is fun, i’ll let you guess 😫
hint: we’re usually forgotten whenever asians are even mentioned 😀
and i would attach an image of myself ‘cause i have a shit ton of pics and selfies and videos (💀) but i have this fear that you guys would go ham with them. last thing i need is ppl irl knowing about my secret life on here 😐
maybe if someone convinced me to get an instagram account based on my tojiscrack-sumaya life, i can personally dm those who i’ve closely interacted with it but idk
#about me#this is weirdddd i never get questions about meeee#but also very nice#i’m flattered with ur assumption#but i am nawtttt indian or pakistani#i’ve also (oddly enough) never been mistaken for that irl#a girl told me i looked like i was from saudi arabia and quatar#wait i lied i remember someone once asking if i was indian#i got somali too#and congolese? (to this day i have no idea if they’re trolling? 😭)#and a customer from the retail store i used to work at asked if i had mexican roots#sigh#my race is always forgotten HAHAHA#and this one guy from secondary school asked if i was from kad-smth-stan?#wait i forgot the name of the country#kazakhstan#yeah that#flattered again but i had no idea what that country even was before that lolol

the amount of effort that goes into figuring out what to cook and eat every day is RIDICULOUS. i used to think people were so weird and boring for eating the same thing every single day but it truly does make life so much easier
#and also it's nice to know exactly what your food is going to taste like before you eat it#like when i get unfamiliar takeout. half the time i'm like. oh.#i'm going to have to eat all of this. or be judged.#so i just do my best to suppress my gag reflex and Get Through It and then it makes me sick so what was even the point#i think my parents spoiled me. and the most annoying thing is they're significantly better at cooking now than when i was a child#so when i go over i eat three delicious home cooked meals + snacks and they're all different and amazingggg#and then i come back to texas and i am like. googling 'how to feed myself healthy vegetarian'#because I do NOT have the time or money or energy to cook three beautiful delicious meals Just For Me#i think this would be easier with a partner#this whole week i bought a fuckton of mediterranean groceries and i have been making and eating food!!#mediterranean is close enough to indian that i like it well enough#unfortunately for me. i am def going to have to learn how to cook indian food to get through life. because i cannot fucking eat american#i don't know HOW you guys do it i'm so spoiled#i'm assuming meat is this really amazing wonderful thing that just adds flavor to everything#(it is physically repulsive to me and the couple times ive accidentally tasted it it's bleh so i refuse to partake)#i think it's an acquired taste but it magically makes ur food better. that is my understanding of how meat works#cause american vegetarian food is the saddest fucking thing i've ever tasted#i still think about my coworker i was talking to about my food issues and he was like. 'do u understand that you have been given a gift#by having constant access to tasty food your entire life. i ate unseasoned green beans every day of my childhood. learn how to fucking cook#indian food already.' truly a horrific thing to hear. but i'm calling my parents more and going HOW TO COOK VEGETABLE? BEAN? PLEASE HELP??#and by god i am not going to turn into my coworker.#anyways we start with baby steps. lentils and rice it is next week .-. going to the indian store to buy pickles to make it more tolerable#and i have my cabinet full of spices already at least#i wish i was less pickyyy#sometimes lalita cooks indian food for me and i'm like wow. i love and appreciate u for feeding me. but this sure is south indian food#i don't understand How they use spices. it feels like they toss as much of as many bottles as they can into every dish#and it's. the taste is just OW OW OW and nothing else. where's the nuance. the flavor.#and i like it when things are spicy!! i can even eat things where the flavor is just Hot. but not when she cooks it.#she will like watch my face when i take a bite and then go 'if you don't like it i'm throwing away all my pots and running away'#which. honestly a fair reaction. the problem is that i am incapable of lying

so humiliating going to the local indian grocery store being half indian and white passing. just got jumpscared by the guy working there following me around asking "do you need any help? :)" I'M INDIAN I SWEAR
#to be fair the lip ring is probably a bit throwing#mine#the joke here is that traditionally if an indian female presenting person walked into a store#the guy working there wouldn't approach her at all out of like. respect i guess#approaching her would be misconstrued as flirtation#obviously he thought I was white and was doing a good customer service thing#not bitching he was nice but god.#IM ONE OF YOU I PROMISE
