I'm blown away at myself for being surprised that I can't do anything yet, because I was so caught up in the euphoria of FINALLY having a slow mind and emotional stability that I forgot I was being fucked up by black mold infestations for almost 7 years, without meds for 5, and in those 5 years I was so depressed that I was basically reduced to rotting in my bed nearly 24/7.
Like my brain is more than likely deteriorated beyond repair at this point, and I've noticeably regressed with my mental functions, I can't expect to ever bounce back to where I was before.
#I occasionally get upset that I'm not magically able to focus and do shit but then I remember this#like hey brain. you're literally disabled stop trying to shoot for the level of overworking that the childhood energy shield gave you.#I'm just glad I came to terms with this while I was in the depths of despair and not in a giving up way#but in the way of knowing what's happening and resigning myself to being happy with any level of improvement#and I am don't get me wrong it's just the whole ADHD thing#you know how it is when you get that streak of Good you get that ADHD Hubris and try to shoot for the stars instantly

Tonight I am frustrated by the fact that I still have a lot of bias to unlearn when it comes to dealing with students with special needs
(As in, it would be nice if I could be effortlessly good at it, but alas)
#Matt has a life#Shit from work#Part of the problem (on top of like... the usual isms) is also that a) I actually *like* the traditional quiet classroom environment#just because quiet and focus is how I learn things best#also: I have limited time to prepare things like dyslexia friendly resources#I mean fortunately there's some stuff that was premade which I'll be able to modify to get started this year#unfortunately my student who probably needs it the most is not in a class where anything is ready so#more work more time needed and my availability is not moving -_-#(will still try i just don't think it'll be the greatest possible thing)#also wrt kids who probably have adhd but no other support: I have a really hard time figuring out what helps them concentrate#apart from what's actually a distraction#case in point: one time one of my students spent the full hour fiddling with paper#with no improvement that I could see in how much attention they paid to the class#and they said 'this was great I was quiet aren't you happy?'#and I was like 'well I won't lie it's convenient for me but also the goam is to help you focus#not to make things convenient'#anyway I think my main tldr is that whime there are things that exist to help these students#and I'm willing to try them#So far my attempts have felt more like randomly chucking stuff at them#(even if I ask them to tell me if they have techniques that help them already)#than anything really helpful#and I haven't figured out yet how to move past that in order to properly make things more accessible for them#(plus like. the one student who is apparently VERY dyslexic#when I asled if there might be underlying cause to their struggles in my class#strongly denied it. which adds to the difficulties)#anyway I feel like this went a little 'woe is me for dealing with this' so like#sorry about that

Hey thanks so much for the fic recs ❤️
I am grateful you went and read some to suggest because that really was nice of you and now I have some new stories to read that are more about the lore of Bloodborne. Thanks again 😇
./////. Hey you are that anon! Well, you welcome? Heheh
I still appreciate that you considered me to be qualified enough to recommend something fun to read! I myself understand the need to ask someone: as much as I'd love to binge read every single fanfic in the row, I am always either busy or too unfocused, so asking someone to recommend what to read just shortens the process.. that otherwise would've just been too many hours of looking for stuff.
Drawings take hours to create and seconds to see, but fiction takes hours to create AND hours to read (unless it is a short drabble of course), so yeah, it is important that fans recommend fanfics around! When you reblog a drawing, naturally people will see it, but people are unlikely to click on the link of a fanfic reblogged... unless you gush in the tags or reblogs about why it is worth it!
#ask replies#personal#fandomry rambles#honestly from what i can tell ADHD is THE biggest abyss between fans and fanfics#and ive noticed that hearing someone whose opinion you value say 'dude trust me read it' can-#-significantly improve focus and add energy#gotta love having neurodivergency that never lets me do things INCLUDING doing what i love xD#i also tend to liveblog fanfics in my discord storage#adding memes and remarks as i go helps me to remember and get the best out of story!

cw for disordered eating (result of new medication for unrelated symptoms)
man i really hope that the worst of these side effects are just bc my body is adjusting to a new med bc if it keeps fucking up my appetite this badly then i just can’t keep on it. i ate 2 muffins (circa 2pm) and half of a large salad (circa 10:30pm) today. that’s all the solid food i had except for a ramekin of chocolate ice cream a little after midnight, and tbh i kind of had to make myself finish the whole thing. and then like idk two and half glasses of water throughout the day. a medium root beer from culver’s.
and also every time i ate anything it immediately gave me such awful stomach cramps that i could only do a few bites at a time. had to wait several minutes for my stomach to calm down between chunks of 2-3 bc i just couldn’t eat w that much pain
#whhhyyyyyyyyy does every new med i try for adhd destroy my appetite and then also not do the stuff it’s supposed to#oh you want something to help you focus and manage your time and remember things? you wanna be able to initiate AND complete tasks??#well how does no appetite and nausea and anxiety and shakiness and even more sleep trouble sound.#no we can’t fix the problems ur taking this med for. dont be stupid#AAAUURRHHHHGHH#i really really really hope it’s just bc it’s new. i hope so badly that after another week or two of adjusting i’ll see legit improvement#but to be perfectly honest. i do not expect that will be the case#idk how many ‘try a new med. it goes bad. stop the med. try a new med’s ive got left in me guys

in therapy yesterday, i realized that i'm back in that mode of my general malaise being due to The World and My Circumstances In It being at the forefront of my mind most hours of the day. so if i'm less active on here, it's because i've uninstalled Tumblr from my phone for the foreseeable future
#taking a giant break#just e-mails and news articles for the next couple months for current events#just a heads up#i am already feeling a general daily helplessness because my ADHD getting better hasn't improved my cognitive focus#so i just need to cut down on exposure to subjects that make me feel a general existential helplessness for a bit is what i think

Workbooks to improve executive functioning
Since the post I made last night about improving executive functioning was so popular, I figured I should pull these out of my comments and give them their own post, in case it's helpful for people.
I have worked with the publishers of all of the books linked below and can vouch for their psychology books. The publisher of most of them, New Harbinger, is an extremely credible evidence-based psychology publisher.
Obvious disclaimer that everyone's brain is different and what works for someone else may not work for you.
Is there evidence that executive functioning can be improved? Yes. This book appears to be a very thorough overview of the field, and contains both advocates and detractors of cognitive training, for a balanced perspective. From the table of contents, I would really recommend jumping straight to Part 3: Developmental Perspectives for executive functioning (EF) writ large.
Certain therapy modalities are specifically designed for skill-building in areas like impulsivity, decision-making, emotional regulation, and cognitive flexibility, all of which are EF skills or very dependent on EF skills. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is probably the best field to look at for these - skill-building in those areas is its core goal.
Some DBT workbooks:
The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook: Practical DBT Exercises for Learning Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance
The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook for Teens
There are also a lot of workbooks for ADHD that are sometimes more broad but also can help with executive functioning:
The Adult ADHD and Anxiety Workbook: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Skills to Manage Stress, Find Focus, and Reclaim Your Life
The CBT Workbook for Adult ADHD: Evidence-Based Exercises to Improve Your Focus, Productivity, and Wellbeing
The Neurodivergence Skills Workbook for Autism and ADHD
General executive functioning workbooks:
The Executive Functioning Workbook for Teens
Executive Functioning Workbook for Adults: Exercises to Help You Get Organized, Stay Focused, and Achieve Your Goals
Hope these are helpful to someone!!

Day 12 (10-21-23)
I worked a lot on my certification project. Most of it was writing, as I expected. As it turns out though, altering the format from a few paragraphs to a timeline meant changing a decent amount of code. Now all that's left to do is figure out all the spacing. There's also the matter of the secondary page I made in order to have somewhere to link for this project. I think for now I can put it off until I have more ideas for it.
The story is really starting to develop and that's fun! I don't enjoy writing as much as I used to. Now that I think about it, maybe I never did and what I truly enjoyed was having written something. I always recall wanting to get to the end of whatever I was working on. I think I should put more focus into enjoying the process of things I do just generally.

Just saw an ad trying to convince people that they can “game their ADHD away” that’s so skeezy it’s giving me hives just thinking about it
#It’s so predatory#”multitask in this game to improve your focus” no you just want people to sink valuable time they need to be doing other things#into playing your game so you can make money off of pretending to help them#god I hate ads so much sometimes#predatory advertising#adhd#don’t fall for this

study tips: how to get a 4.00 GPA 🩰
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆
All throughout last year I've gotten perfect grades on my report cards and many of my friends have asked how I've done it and i seriously had no idea until recently when I started to take notice of my new ways of studying... and today ive decided to put all my findings on this post...so here we goo...💋
#1 finish ur homework the second u get it:
I cannot stress this enough HOMEWORK IS IMPORTANT! idc if you’re too lazy or busy studying for exams, homework is almost half of your grade, doing it the second you get it is the best way to eliminate the stress and procrastination you get when trying to tackle an assignment.
#2 be nice to teachers:
ultimately teachers are the ones deciding your fate, so being a teacher's pet isn't always a bad thing. you don't have to absolutely love them, but giving them respect while speaking, trying to connect with and get to know them, and even just thanking them after class would take you a long way.
#3 pay attention in class:
ive heard this a million times and as a girly with undiagnosed adhd it is so hard for me to focus during class, but one thing I found helpful is sitting in front of the class. this was important because the teacher was literally in my face so I couldn't zone out. a thing that also helped me is 24/7 taking notes or highlighting passages.
#4 start caring:
in middle school, i literally did not care about school whatsoever(and im sure most of u as well) and that was because i didn't have any severe consequences. my parents may get mad at me and i may feel disappointed in myself, but there was no long-term consequences. so when i started high school.
i had to start caring because high school grades are all that matters to universities. it was also because i knew i had a dream and wanted to achieve it, and the only way to do so was to fake being a good student till i actually became one.
something that also stops you from caring about school, is u caring about other people or what they think of u, whether it be positively or negatively. thinking about others will take up most of your brain capacity very quickly, which would result in u being distracted and not caring about ur schoolwork.
#5 surrond urrself with people who actually want to improve themselves:
this is SO important! surrounding urself with negative people who don't care about education can greatly affect you(e.g. making u late to class) making friends with people who show up to class on time, get their work done fast, and respect others is a pathway to getting good grades. i believe that the most people you spend time with reflect on who you are, and don't let those people be negative.
*now these tips won't guarantee you getting immediate straight A's, but applying them to your school life will definitely improve it.

Do you think that it is okay to be "slow" at art? I have problems with ADHD and I can never get things out very quickly... while I still improve, learn, and end up finishing things, it often takes me way longer than it should. It ends up being a little stressful because my friends can output drawings a lot quicker, even in doodle format, whereas even for just doodles it can take me at least an hour at times. This makes things like drawpiles a bit hard to do as well.
Yes, it is okay to be "slow" in art.
"Speed" is relative. You are quite fast in movement speed in comparison to a different person.
Going further, there are infinite points to compare your speed against. "Was I the fastest I could possibly be when depicting this character with these series of lines?" Well, there are infinite different series of lines you could have drawn, infinite influences that any one person can have, infinite life experiences, thus no two people will ever draw exactly the same. A person can draw faster than you, but their drawings are different than yours. Even when people emulate each other, there is something about each person that makes their differences clear eventually – attitude, subject matter, tendencies, choice of material... "Would my friend draw this picture faster than I could?" You can ask yourself such questions but it would be impossible to answer, because you are the person who made the drawing, thus whatever 'speed' was required for the drawing was exactly the 'speed' at which you made the drawing, otherwise the drawing would not exist at all.
If you wish to draw 'faster', you can avoid some actions. You can paint without use of the undo button, you do not have to flip the canvas, you do not have to spend time reading color theory, you can just draw. You can qualify even the messiest drawing as a 'finished' drawing. That's what I enjoy.
However, if you avoid actions that you enjoy for the purpose of 'saving time', you may end up desiring such actions, and you may regret your faster pace. Contrary to the belief that 'fast is best', being 'slow' can be preferable over being 'fast', because you are enjoying the actions that cause you to work at a slower pace.
In this world, I particularly dislike the focus on "high speed" as if it is an innately positive quality. It is a neutral quality. Of course, you should be fast in some emergency scenarios. But there is no 'perfect' future, so I do not see why humans rush towards this imaginary 'perfect' future. There are no 'perfect' pictures, so there is no rush to reach such a 'perfect' state. I was happy to refresh an artist's blog in 2006 and see a new picture once every few months. Also, there were some websites in which you could view the time-lapse video of a person's drawing, and some people spent hours and hours. There was no ability to edit the video, so you could watch people redraw things over and over, scrap various ideas, focus on different parts of a drawing, and so on. Even if the 'completed' drawing looked 'perfect' to me at first glance, the person might have taken a lot of time. I had fun watching their videos. Others would draw quickly, so their videos were short. That was cool too. I didn't feel either was superior over the other.
I like a slow pace. My speed varies because life and thoughts vary. I have spent weeks on some of my favorite works. I have spent months thinking about something before finally drawing about it. In artwork, you can spend an eternity. Ideas can mutate into different ideas if you leave them alone for a long time. There is no pressure to act immediately. That is great.
Perhaps you can make things with friends who do not usually draw. You may find that they have a fun insight in comparison to the friends who are experienced at drawing. 'High experience in drawing' can also result in 'doing things only in the way that we are taught is the correct way' which can result in 'repeating the same ideas and techniques.' That is fine, but 'low experience in creating art' can result in great art because they do not follow the common 'rules' that are popularized in various art communities, so they can make awesome, surprising artwork without consciously thinking about making something 'good'.
I am 'slow' in comparison to my friends. Drawing with friends was difficult to enjoy. "Well, I will just doodle fun things at the bottom of the page. Oh, others have already painted complex things." It's alright. It became fun when I stopped thinking much while drawing. You can doodle at your own pace, true friends will not judge you. Also, if you do not enjoy drawing with others, even if you make great effort to enjoy it, it is OK. There are other activities to enjoy with friends too. I can enjoy drawing with others sometimes, but other times, I prefer to draw alone.
