tommy must live in a perpetual state of confusion over buck

do you think the longer buck allies the more tommy realises that "oh, he really is like this but he's definitely some flavor of queer"? because i see tommy maybe gently testing buck's jealousy to see what it'll take to make him break

oooookay once again this is not a snippet (sorryyyyy) but is more me attempting to understand wtf is going on in tommy's head throughout all this that he keeps "sure, okay"-ing himself into ridiculous situations with buck, so apologies for just unloading the contents of my brain on you

there are a few things i've been chewing on in terms of figuring out how tommy reacts to the buck of it all, which i hope will make it make sense that i actually don't think tommy pushing or testing for jealousy is on the cards in this fic (although i do love the idea!)

so first of all, this is a younger tommy than we've seen interact with buck in canon (of course), so whatever happened to make him Like That in the breakup hasn't happened yet (and won't, because i am a slut for a HEA). he's newly out and in my experience, a lot of newly out people, particularly people who are a bit older have something of a second adolescence. so yeah while this means he's incredibly horny (horny enough to let a self-proclaimed straight guy give him the absolute best sex of his life) it also means he just wants to have fun!! and buck is SO. MUCH. FUN. he's spent so long so tightly controlled that he's trying really hard to just go with the flow.

second, when i say newly out tommy, i mean newly out. like, it's one thing to "stop lying about who i am" - to me, there's a non-zero chance that just means "stop making up girlfriends" rather than "actually grapple with the life-long process of coming out (again and again and again)". so in my head (and it might come up in the fic, idk yet) the scene early on where he tells buck he doesn't want the cute girl's number because he's gay is probably one of the first times he actually said the words out loud. which ties into...

third, we know tommy was work friends with sal (at least and again, don't know that it'll come up in the fic but for the record, he 100% had a monstrous crush on him, like it made him ILL how much he wanted sal, i will hear no arguments), and that he developed good - again, work-based - friendships with hen and chim, but i feel like for a deeply closeted guy under dadt with a shitty childhood buck might be his first actual friend who knows all of him and likes him. spends time with him. doesn't care that he's gay. actively supports his gayness. doesn't recoil and in fact actively encourages tommy to talk about it. so i think tommy is just...deeply, deeply grateful for this confusing train wreck of a man

fourth, while i think there are definitely times that tommy thinks "he...he's flirting with me, right? is something gonna happen here?" this is a guy who has spent his entire adult life not looking at that kinda thing. not letting himself wonder if a guy (particularly a friend) is into him. or really, even if he's into them. he's really, really good at compartmentalising, and buck's pretty insistent that he's straight, so tommy's taking that at face value. hey, buck makes compelling arguments ("tommy, straight men have prostates too!")

aaaaand there we have the contents of my brain as it relates to one tommy kinard. even in my own incredibly stupid AUs, i am frankly obsessed. i want to gnaw on him. i'll settle for having buck do it instead.

in the story, i tried mashing together a bunch of different references for his character, while still trying to stay true to the character of mary jane watson but also not sacrificing too much of hobie brown. i hope i… did a good enough job?

☆ hobie1610 has a strained relationship with his family, true to mj watson's awful family dynamics in canon. it just... runs in every mj's blood i guess lmao

☆ hobie1610 wants so badly to be an investigative journalist! his plan after graduating from visions is to land an internship at the daily bugle :)

☆ he also gets up to mechanical shenanigans in his free time, fixing and building whatever he can get his hands on. he's very handy with machines and tech, true to the original characterization of hobie brown on earth-616, except on earth-1610 he usually has to hide his tools and gadgets

☆ most of that rebellion consists of sneaking out when he knows he shouldn't. his mother is strict, but she's often very busy and that gives hobie1610 many chances to slip away unnoticed. his bravery is inspired by mj's character in the spiderman ps4 game, where she gets involved in dangerous missions with peter. those gameplay scenes with her in the museum inspired the 3rd chapter of my hobie1610 story

☆ hobie1610's sense of humor is more like zendaya's mj than anyone else

☆ the concept of hobie being miles' mj didn't entirely come out of nowhere! it wasn't just abt punkflower-- the possibility came up when i remembered that andrew garfield claimed he wanted his spiderman's mj to be a man. specifically played by michael b jordan ;)

☆ hobie1610's casual wardrobe outside of visions and his photoshoots consists of mostly greens and earth tones. most mj's across various diff portrayals have green or earth tones in their casual fits

I was saving this ask to make a little comic of how that last chapter felt but- lets say it didn't turn out how i wanted. Instead, i just dug out some of my old Maid-chan drawings and stared at them blankly for the next days.

I'm still particularly fixed on this one little page:

Mister Green was my absolute favorite and the only light i saw at the end of her tunnel. He was so kind and sweet, and pretty much the only one that treated her like a person (besides Yellow of course). When i first read this fic so many years ago i didn't trully realized the dark tone of this story but i still chose the only "healthy" option. I wanted MC to be happy and free, and oh how i wanted him to give her that. I held those drawings of him for years imagining a chapter where they would encounter again and that would drive her to a better ending (either skeletons overcoming their issues and treating her with respect or him taking her away).

But then this final chapter appeared and it was... a thing.

(Kinda spoilers for the babes that haven't read it)

First of all, I FINALLY GOT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED AFTER BEACH CHAPTERS OMG I NEEDED THAT

Second of all, it didn't look good at all and it was getting worse as I read. But then good because it was a week alone for her to rest and Sans was eating with her?? But also that whole scene reminded me how bad her situation really was so it actually wasn't good at all.

And then the scene that broke me.

I was aware that I wanted her to flee before, but I never thought she could.

It was oddly satisfying, if not a bit anxiety inducing because of the thought that they would caught her eventually. As always.

But then Asgore, and Orange. And nothing...

I got mad that he found her. Which was a weird feeling since I remember liking him a lot. It felt to me like he ruined her good enough ending. But despite that, it makes sense it was him so I don't complain.

What crushed me though, wasn't that she couldn't say goodbye or that Sans got tired of trying to get her back. It was the fact the Gs didn't even try looking for her. They didn't even got mentioned. What happened there, I wonder. Didn't they like her? Care for her? Mister Green wrote her letters, of course he liked her. But then why...?

Suddenly he looked like a fairytale.

The ending was great, finally lending her the ability to choose. It made absolutely everything worth it and the way it was written made me feel like I do have a say in the matter. And for the first time, i didn't choose the skeletons.

I realized she could find her happy ending alone.

to my favorite favorite people ever <3 I am so happy to have gone through this year with all of you! I love to look at how far this blog has gone and coming to the realization that essentially everything I have built up for myself so far has happened within this year it feels so long ago 😭😭but I have accomplished so many things this year including actually completing several fics (which I've never been able to do before) and meeting so many wonderful people!!! so I just wanted to take a small moment to individually thank anyone who has ever interacted with me <3 to all the people I've had countless interactions with in the replies, to all of my anons, I love you all so very much and am so grateful for your support <3 while fics like love notes and cold kisses are how I found most of my base and they do indeed hold a special place in my heart, I think overall try again is actually the work I am most proud of this year because it has brought me so close to so many of you. seeing how other people related to many of the struggles mentioned in that fic really made me have an appreciation for writing and the ability to convey emotions and empathize <3 I am so thankful for my base and all of my followers and I think it's kind of nice to see how we are all going through similar struggles; I hope that try again along with any other fic I've written that you've felt a connection to has helped you know that you are not alone and so very loved <3 happy holidays and happy new year!!

I saw an interesting question once. One that posed the controversial thought that "if your yaoi ship got turned into yuri, would you even still ship it anymore??" It was an interesting question, although perhaps a leading question, that gave the idea that many people may cease to ship a pairing if they turned from boys to girls.

I only had one thought to that question.

It's cute that you think that would have any chance of deterring me. No, w a t c h. My undying love for my otp is only strengthened.

Case in point; if yaoi errorink has consumed my entire mind and soul, then it would make perfect sense that yuri errorink would do so as well. Don't you see. It's literally the exact same ship, with all the same dynamics and interactions, but they're ✧˖°.girls now✧˖°.

Fun fact; I'm sick as a dog as of this post. I finished these drawings not being able to breathe or swallow. :D Well, f i n e, I wasn't as bad when I finished Error's first, but then I got worse with Ink's. Like. I was staring at the screen, half-dead and unable to focus, when I was finishing her up, but she doesn't look half that bad, huh. Not too shabby for someone who can barely concentrate and had to proofread this post four times before giving up and hoping it is at least somewhat coherent in my fever induced fog state.

Allow me to be super delulu here for a moment...

We know there's another 9-1-1 spinoff in the works. One city location we've heard is Vegas.

We know Vegas is only an hour away from LA by helicopter.

What if the "unforseen hurdle" for Buck and Tommy's relationship is Tommy getting a job offer in Vegas (hello backdoor pilot (lol) for the new spinoff) and it's not really a big deal for him because "it's only an hour away, Evan. I go, put in my 48, and come home. It's not like I'm moving and this isn't going to change anything."

But of course it is a big deal for Mr. Abandonment Issues. What if Tommy gets tired of commuting back and forth all the time? What if he just happens to like Vegas better and decides he wants to move after all?

And maybe that whole big discussion leads to something like "and if you moved in with me, the time away from each other wouldn't seem so bad."

As much as I think I'm totally in left field and it would suck to see Lou leave the main show (plus they've never carried over characters from the main to the spinoff before anyways), I would absolutely watch him on a spinoff (not that I'm not gonna watch it anyways, let's be real.)

Maybe some Vegas shenanigans is what Oliver meant when he said Buck was gonna have some fun and ludicrous moments. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Anyways, it's probably not that but it would make a good fic if anyone feels like it.

Behind the monolith, within the ruins of the old castle restructured for flavor and texture to the busy land around them, Etho stokes a fire. The red orange laps at the dark sky above him, haloing a good thirty feet out from him in a warm, amber light. It licks over Bdubs' features, too, shifting the face he knows, catching his shadows, making caricatures. He only glances up every now and again, watching the way Bdubs' eyes find the flame, and find the stars the thin bands of smoke threaten to blot out. Satisfied with the health of the campfire in front of him, Etho shuffles on his knees over to him. His knees are smeared with dirt and grass by the time he collapses back onto his hands near Bdubs' hip and kicks his muddy boots out to the edge of the small ring of rocks holding the fire. Bdubs raises an eyebrow at him.

"Fancy seeing you," he says, a smile playing on his mouth. "Thought you might spend the whole night babyin' the fire."

"No," Etho drawls, shuffling back to sit beside him. "No, I wouldn't."

"I dunno, Etho," Bdubs protests, earning him a solid sock to the shoulder. He wobbles and so does Etho.

"You keep punchin' me and I'm not sharin' my snacks, you meanie-head."

Etho sticks his tongue out. With the mask off and shoved into his jacket pocket, jacket long discarded and tossed to Bdubs' left, he's welcome to make all sorts of faces to annoy Bdubs. It comes with the caveat that Bdubs will actually see him, but regardless. Worth it in the long run.

After a beat, Etho sighs. He tips himself over and back, the back of his head colliding weakly with Bdubs' shoulder. Bdubs makes a small, startled sound as he does, but immediately turns to rest his cheek on the tufts of white hair spilling out of Etho's braid and over his shoulder. 

"Hiya, Bdubs," Etho hums, tucking his face a bit into his shoulder, the fluff of his mossy coat. He smells a bit like damp grass. With the moss and dirt and what not. 

"Hi, Etho," Bdubs replies, sighing to himself. 

Etho holds his hands out, palms out. 

“My hands are cold.”

Bdubs snorts.

“What, ‘s that a pick up line?”

Etho giggles, shaking his head.

“No, I’m genuine about that,” he says through laughs. “They’re just cold.”

Scoffing to himself, Bdubs takes his hands in his, making a noise like he’s frowning much too deeply to be good for his face. He rubs his thumbs against the backs of his hands, squeezing them. Etho sighs, letting Bdubs hold his hands and soaking in the little body heat he can feel through the moss. 

Bdubs drops his hands with one last squeeze. "You want a snack?"

"Are you deciding to share?" Etho hums.

Bdubs snorts. "Am now. Can't eat all these damn things by myself."

He rustles around for a moment, clearly searching in the small bag beside him as Etho lets his eyes wander to the sky. Though it's somewhat hazy by the smoke, it still sparkles like it always does: mostly void, partially stars. Eventually, Bdubs nudges him with his elbow. Etho sits up slightly, now just leaning into him, rather than pressing himself into his coat. Bdubs raises his eyebrows, holding a marshmallow out to him. Etho makes a small, amused sound.

“Is this what you wanted to make a fire for?” He plucks the marshmallow from his hands.

Bdubs shrugs.

“Maybe,” he grins. “You gotta problem with that?”

Etho shakes his head. Leaning away from him, he pats around for a stick from the kindling, something with a sharp enough edge to stab into the marshmallow. When he does, he sticks it properly, and sticks it into the fire. Bdubs wriggles away to find his own stick, moving about in Etho’s peripheral as Etho watches his marshmallow with a careful eye. Can’t risk it burning.

“How many of these did you even bring?” Etho asks, glancing over at Bdubs an arm’s length from him. Bdubs isn’t watching his marshmallow in so much as he’s watching the fire. It flickers over his face, lighting up in his eyes as he glances up to Etho. 

“Enough,” he shrugs, a small smile playing on his face. Etho pulls his stick from the fire, weaseling the now-toasted marshmallow from it’s skewer, getting melted fluff all over his fingers as he attempts to stick it entirely in his mouth. He laughs through a full mouth, watching Bdubs’ marshmallow char around the edge. Bdubs yelps, blows the small fire out, glares over his now-burnt marshmallow at Etho. 

“Gotta pay more attention, ‘Dubs,” he garbles through a full mouth. Bdubs waves his stick at him, picking off the bits of charred sugar.

“If I didn’t have’ta fix this thing, oh I’d—Etho—”

Etho squeaks.

“Just eat the burnt bits!” he says as he finally swallows. “You’ll live!”

Crinkling his nose, Bdubs shoves the marshmallow in his mouth. The frown on his face stays stuck as he skewers another marshmallow. Etho watches him for a second, still giggling as Bdubs’ eyes stay glued to the stick and his marshmallow, intent on not burning it. Shifting a little closer, Etho holds out his hands. Bdubs hands him another marshmallow.

“Thank you, Bdubs,” Etho hums. Bdubs makes a noncommittal sound.

“‘M tryn’a focus,” he says. Etho nods. 

Right, Etho smiles. He’ll leave him to it.
