Girl like. The reason he said "this is how it should be" and faced death with a smile....is cuz he wanted to die. For 2 years he sat there thinking he was worthless and deserved to die. If he hadn’t be shot, his death would’ve been suicide, he was fully planning to die in a gutter somewhere undetected. When saying "this is how it should be" hes literally saying "don’t cry because I’m dying, my death is a good thing actually because I fucking suck and you are better off without me". I don’t think that’s badass even slightly, it’s actually really sad and really shitty. Personally, if it were me, if I was holding my dying best friend in my arms who was deeply depressed and suicidal and he said "this is how it should be" uh. I wouldn’t admire him for it??? i think the chapter (250) where kusuo tries to change his timeline so that he doesnt have to tell akechi about his powers and ends up accidentally entering a timeline where hes fucking happy and allowed himself to make genuine connections with his friends is by far the most depressing chapter in the entire manga

he had very limited time before he had to deal with akechi, but i just imagine him sitting curled up at his desk for minutes longer than he shouldve, just staring at nothing because where did he go wrong? how is it possible that there are timelines where he doesnt hate himself? is he jealous of that other him or does he resent him because he knows hes undeserving of the connections the other him apparently allowed himself? both?

i need to know what his relationship with his family is like in that timeline... did something change with them too? or everyone treats him the same but in that timeline he has an actual support system to deal with it? or things are different because he actually stands up for himself and can communicate his needs to his family? FUCKKK.

im not entirely sure of the canonicity of the popularity poll contest chapter (73) but it probably caused a similar mental break, but not nearly as significant because it was WAY before he started truly accepting any love from his friends and family... but yk, it just says a lot about him that ONE traumatic experience changed his entire viewpoint on life but it wasn't anything that happened to HIM, like his brother trying to kill him or his friend betraying him or any of his other near death experiences, NO, it was seeing a dog die. THATS what made him decide to better himself and be kind. so yeah, this chapter prob didnt fuck him up TOO bad but he definitely thought back to it during the akechi chapter...

ignoring your brother, you adjust your own costume. this year you let the party choose what you dressed as, and honestly you shouldve known better. the witch hat they shoved on your head is heavier than you ever thought possible and the fake, pointy nose they snickered at smells like feet.

jonathan, however, absolutely loves your costume.

"nice nose, bug." he snorts, flicking the fake tip with his finger. it wiggles in a gross, comedic way that agitates you further.

will beams at you, looking painfully adorable in his quicksilver costume. the frayed edges of his suit tells you that joyce made it.

when mike sees you, he almost chokes on his candy. it takes lucas and jonathan aggressively swatting his back to dislodge the wafer. mike sputters on the ground, panting heavily. its truly a sight to see: lucas, dressed as blade, attacking mike, dressed as captain america.

"almost died." mike breathes out, pointing a lazy finger at your nose. "but that was so worth it."

you glare at the kid, kicking his padded stomach. he screeches and rolls on the ground to avoid your foot while dustin, lucas, and will all laugh.

jonathan stands to the side with them, watching you fondly. he hadnt worn a costume tonight. instead, he brought a backpack full of your old clothes and an extra jacket for you tonight. when you told him what the boys had wanted you to wear, he knew youd last only half the night. as much as you love to please the party, theres only so much you can last wearing an old, smelly plastic nose.

and jonathan is right. after the first few blocks around mikes neighborhood, he notices you ducking your head down as you pass strangers. a little girl screams when she sees you at one point.

"im sorry!" you shout to her mom, wincing. the woman glares at you and tugs her child away angrily. you turn and sigh, leaning against jonathan. "theres no way my costume is that scary."

jonathan rubs your side. "the nose is a bit... rough."

"im gonna kill mike."

"we both know it was dustins idea."

"hey, slowpokes!" mike shouts at you and jonathan. "hurry up, the rich are running out of the big candy bars!"

you tilt your head. "did he just say 'the rich'?"

at some point in the night, sometime after dustin skins his knee running after a frog and you ditched the witch costume for the clothes jonathan brought you, the late october chill sets in.

will shivers slightly as he walks, his costume too thin to protect against the weather. dustin and the others are up ahead, eager to get to the last few houses before curfew. jonathan is with them. its his turn to knock on the door, anyways.

"you cold?" you ask will, not even bothering to wait for his response before taking your own jacket off. "here."

"no, im okay-" he tries to shrug it off, but you quickly zip the jacket, locking his small body inside.

"nope. cant have you getting sick. your mom would kill me."

will snorts. "my mom would never kill you. she loves you more than she loves me and jonathan."

andres dumb plan hinges too much on the idea of "stolas will come save blitz because he loves him and then hold himself accountable so i can take his legions! obviously!" when theres like. no implication that anyone really knows what blitz and stolas's relationship is, or that they even care about each other, especially not when stella said, "he finally realized that filthy little beast was only using him to gain access to his grimoire", like, what about that implies that stolas would give a shit if anything happened to someone who was "using him"? thats right - it doesnt! if andres plan had been properly executed in the stupid ass way he set it up in the episode, then blitz wouldve been executed, and fuck all wouldve happen to stolas after. if anything, hed be treated like a hero who was used unfairly by some low life, who was then slaughtered on tv to remind the lower citizens of hell not to fuck with the upper crust. imagine if that had happened, forcing stolas to go back to his home by himself; no stella since they divorced, no via since shes turning 18 soon, and no blitzy, ever again. maybe they shouldve just done that tbh, that way he could take over the show completely, since thats obviously what viv wants so damn bad. New Helluva Boss episode thoughts from a Certified Stolitz Hater!!!

SPOILERS BELOW !!!!

Yeah it was pretty good.

Ill probably watch some review and realize i have more problems with this episode than i noticed or realized, but for now i think it was just. Good. Not mid, but not excellent either.

Vassago (thats his name, right?? Idk how to spell it, oh well) is probably now OFFICIALLY my fav minor character. His design is bright and pleasant to look at, his VC was killing it, and i believe hes meant to be Brazilian? Which.. dude. I LOVE the representation of languages and implied races of characters like Valentino in the show, and it never feels forced. Props to the Helluva team for that one.

Now. Ignoring all of what Stolas has done to Blitzø already - eliminating the context of their relationship thus far… Stolas sacrificing himself is actually very sweet. He gives up his status, power, and protection to save the one he loves. Im not exactly thrilled that hes given up his daughter in favor of Blitzø AGAIN however. Give my girl a break, dude.

And how she was FULLY READY TO RUN OUT THE DOOR TO GO HELP HIM OR SEE HIM if it wasnt for Stella manipulating her - that just makes me even more mad. Stolas might SAY he cares about people like Octavia and Blitzø, but his actions just about never convey the same thing.

Now… WITH the context of Stolas’ continued mistakes, manipulation, selfishness, and pushy creepiness in his relationship with Blitzø throughout the series… fuck off, man. Actually leave me alone forever.

I felt like Stolas sacrificing himself for Blitzø is now erasing every awful thing hes done to him throughout the series. Its a trope i think ive observed before - “you treated me like shit before, and we had all kinda of hard problems that i shouldve moved on from, and become a better person without you around, but you saved my life!! Lets get married and pretend none of that ever happened because of a new toxic ‘romantic’ concept - a life debt!!!”

And dont get me wrong - life debts can be done VERY well. But you need a skilled enough writer who can easily enough cut through tropes to do it right. No offense, as the writing in this show is amazing, but the Helluva writers. Well. They cant exactly subvert expectations, especially when it comes to tropes.

However, im not going to judge and throw around Stolas for being depressed at the end of the episode. Hes lost the only life hes ever known, and cant see his daughter for Lucifer knows how long. Hes allowed to soak in the bathtub for a while.

BUT!! Seeing how gentle Blitzø was with Stolas at the end of the episode - helping him bathe off the rotten food, kissing his cheek when he falls asleep, just generally being so romantic and physically affectionate with him - it made my stomach churn. This ship can’t work UNLESS you ignore everything that’s happened before in the series, which is exactly where i think the Helluva writers are taking it, unfortunately.

Call me pessimistic, but i just really stopped liking the show as much when the OG concept was put on the back burner in favor of some genuinely toxic 2015 top and bottom stereotype ship. Like. If i showed you the first two episodes of this show, and then i told you the shit-fetish cheating owl bird and the shithead lovable scamp IMP boss very genuinely and seriously got together, you would be concerned at least.

Anyway, fuck Stolas, Blitzø should illegally adopt Octavia so her and Loona can be honorary sisters, and they blow the owl up and frolic through the daisies and get their happy ending and Millie and Moxxie get double married and everyone except most of the Goectia (idk how to spell that shit) get shot by Striker.

if i think about the way Jasper and Steven's dynamic morphed over the course of the show plus future, i get a bit ill tbh, he was once her ruler that she worshipped like a god hundreds of years ago, then he was her worst enemy because he shattered her diamond, then he was a disgusting remnant of what rose quartz had done to her and the entire gem society, then he saved her life and she started to respect her, then they were sparring partners for weeks, then they were friends, then he went too far and nearly killed her, and then she saw through a fake facade to glint a fake truth and decided that deep down, he still was her diamond, and she should treat him as such and he fucking hates it— what if i killed you and all you knew how to do in response was bow to my strength, to vow to protect me, to worship me like the false god i never was and will be, because i killed you, because i became something i never shouldve been, and you fucking appreciated it, found proof that i was still the horrible monster she was running away from by becoming me

did i. did i forget to mention that they have both been rejected to some extent by everyone they have ever fused with. Jasper because of incompatibility and her loyalty to the diamonds outlasting any mutual bond ever attainable, and Steven because his biology rejects a long lasting fusion.

the way they went from "you shattered our diamond! pink diamond!" to kneeling down and proclaiming loyalty and reverence to "my diamond" even though Steven was never Pink Diamond in the first place, and Jasper, Jasper who has only ever had the respect from her diamond her entire life because no one else ever really liked her finally having someone who holds mutual respect with her and ruining it because Steven proved that he was as ruthless as Pink was by shattering her and she decided that he deserves to be revered and worshipped the way a diamond is— and maybe if he was a diamond there wouldnt be an issue with it, but he isnt a diamond no matter how badly she may want to believe

i HATE the whole "bad guy is bad and he doesn't care about his little henchmen" like WHY? evilness doesnt get rid of sympathy and megs has literally no reason to treat his vehicons like that.

i mean, it is megs. he was a bit deranged in the show and i guess that could be used to excuse that writing choice. however. i reeaaallly hate that trope.

i propose that megatron should be motherly more than anything. and of course the vehicons are loyal to him but we should get a reason for that loyalty. like instead of actually murdering the vehicons for fucking up, i think it would make more sense if he chided them instead. depending on how exactly you view vehicons (like are they drones? regular cybertronians?) he might even just treat them like children. if you subscribe to the belief that theyre drones and therefore less developed, that is.

I actually kind of like cruel Megatron... i’ve been on a cruel Megatron kick lately, even though that scene in netflic WFC where Megatron turned off an energon plant and killed all those good decepticon soldiers made me sad... they were waving him off. I’m crying, actually, i don’t like cruel Megatron at all.

to be honest, I can see where you’re coming from. The vehicons might be small but there are a lot of them, if they were truly so horribly mistreated, the could’ve ganged up on Megatron... they have little reason to be loyal, unless you assume they’re mindless "drones" which i honestly don’t believe. I think that the vehicons are kind of "drones" as in, they’re clones made for this war, but they’re fully sentinent with separate personalities. Sorry, i just love the tfp vehicons. They deserved so much better.

I can definitely imagine Megatron being motherly with them... it comforts me. Maybe the times we see him being cruel with them is just him really losing his cool? Maybe that happens, but otherwise he doesn’t blame them for failing too often. They’re just little soldiers, so young, inexperienced, he doesn’t expect them to be as good at fighting as trained warriors.

Yeah, BnHA is very adamant about its Heroes! So! Cool! Worship Them Like Gods! thing. Just when you think it'll be deconstructing the concept of Hero Society, All Might comes back to be fueled by the wishing energy of the world to inject acid into his opponent. Quite a choice. I'm so just in it for the villains. Sorry it didn't work out for you! And sorry you had to come back to Shigaraki ending up like that. 😭😭😭so far. He really should've been allowed to destroy Mt. Fuji.

As for the contrast between the Japanese fandom and the English-speaking fandom... I caution my observations being the whole and objective truth!

I'm much more familiar with Villain Fans Section of the English-speaking fandom; and while we're very loud and vocal, it does seem like the majority opinion is that Heroes are cool, Villains are bad, ending is acceptable. Meanwhile, I'm looking only at japanese tweets through keywords, and they're bound to be more positive because it seems like people avoid tagging their hate; anonymous message boards are freer with their criticism, but there's still never essay-length rants. I'm sure there has bound to be those existing somewhere, but with my mainly surface access into jfandom, I wouldn't know where to look for them.

Plus, there are a few people in jfandom who have the same gripes: why is Endeavor allowed to continue to be a Hero; the heteromorph resolution is majority-oriented and unfair to the minorities; the social issues aspect should've been addressed more; Deku shouldn't have invaded Shigaraki's mind like that, and it's a bit concerning that he seems to have no reaction to the total annihilation of a man in front of him, etc. Not a lot, and, as I said, not as vocal as in English-speaking fandom, but they're there.

However, from my observations, in my opinion I think there are a few key differences:

Shonen Jump is about the protag Heroes. What it is and should be. I think bnha is pointed out to be pretty uniquely sympathetic to its villains?

jfandom are much less lenient towards the Villains. They can love the League, they can criticize Heroes, but they readily acknowledge that the League have done terrible things and should be punished accordingly. Doesn't matter their sad backstories; they still hurt people and they need to pay for that. They're unforgivable. Like, the idea that Tenko killing his family - even if completely by accident, even if manipulated - is a sin no matter what and he should atone for it, is more prominent. (There are also people who will forever know Bakugou as the 'jump off the roof' bully and never forgive him no matter how much development he goes through.)

The concept of 'saving' seems to be more focused on saving the heart, freeing someone from suffering, giving them relief. It does not necessarily mean not killing them, or ever forgiving them, or ever considering them likeable.

the concept of 'the needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few' seems to also be somewhat more significant. of course the few should be accepted and treated right, and they should be accommodated, but it's best to... avoid causing trouble for other (normal) people, let's say. Sometimes, though, the few can't be made to feel accepted, and that's how things are. It's a pity. There are definitely people fighting against this idea, and English-speaking fandom isn't exempt from this either (soooo many 'wow Toga is just a psychopath' takes still existing; and also 'who cares about Muscular' even from the Villain fans), but it's a thing.

Jfandom appears to like it more that Shigaraki sticks to his guns. to the very end, he's stays true to the League; he stands by his choices and actions even if they were under undue influence; and he's a Hero to the Villains. Loyalty and a strong conviction are valued. Seems to be less fretting whether Tenko and Tomura are separate people/identities/persona. (Still a few who think 'Shimura Tenko' will come back.)

and so end result is that overall, Deku did do his job, and admirably at that. He didn't ignore The Crying Child when he could've/should've because Shigaraki was already unforgivable for his actions at Jaku (and before); he saved Shigaraki/Tenko's heart by providing relief, but that doesn't necessarily mean he needed to understand or befriend Shigaraki, or that Shigaraki should be converted (for lack of better word) and saved physically; he's a Hero who stopped a threat and saved the world; and Shigaraki disintegrating is simply just desserts.

But like I said above, it could be that those points aren't specific at all to jfandom. There are certainly a lot of people who think the ending is great and satisfying in the english-speaking fandom (and from what i've seen of machine-translated spanish/french/portuguese/etc tweets, also those fandoms). It's just the critiques are very in your face, and Villain fans are very vocal. I know I certainly am.
