I’m still in shock….

I have a friend who sat through a 1h seminar on what to do if she was kidnapped / taken hostage (her work is the kind of work you’d need to know stuff like that). This is the sort of seminar that the people running it probably do a few times a year. After the hour my friend raised her hand to ask: what, if anything, is different if you’re a woman? (You know - what if you’re in the half of the population that aren’t men). And the guys were like: oh yeah this whole thing is assuming you’re a man. If you’re a woman there’s lots of other stuff. We can set up another slot to talk about that.

Like wtf?

I don’t know how many women there were in the room but I got the impression there were quite a few. Did they ever conceive the idea that this should be information to be given out without people asking? I get we’re a long way from perfect (I’m sure that there’s so much other stuff if we’re disabled, queer, from a different ethnicity, etc etc. but seriously, we’re not even at the stage where they can run a seminar that includes women? Or rather more dangerously, you let women sit through a seminar that makes them unprepared for what could be coming?!?)

Maybe I’m an idiot, but whereas I try to stay on top of the questions I have to ask when I’m in the minority, I usually like to believe the f** obvious stuff is covered.

Regulus is standing in the doorway to the kitchen staring at James. He’s frozen and couldn’t move even if he wanted to. He keeps looking back and forth between the table and James, who’s standing in the middle of the kitchen looking more and more anxious by the second.

Regulus wants to say something, but he has no idea what to say and he’s so close to tears that if he opens his mouth, all that would come out would be an embarrassing sob. He’s already standing here like a frozen idiot; he doesn’t want to end up a blubbering mess on the floor also.  

“I… erm… sorry if this is weird… I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable… you don’t have to stay… I just thought… erm… I’m not sure… maybe I wasn’t really thinking… this is too much, right?… I knew it… I didn’t mean… you can just…”

“Why?” Is all Regulus can get out to cut off James’ rambling spiral.

James stops abruptly and looks over at Regulus and they both shift their eyes to the table. There’s a nicer table cloth, two candles, and a small dinner—a chicken dish, rice, naan and hummus—that looks delicious, but was clearly not made by Effie.

“Erm… well, mom and dad went out tonight… and erm… Sirius went over to Remus’… so it’s just you and me for dinner.” He shrugs. “Erm… mom gave me some money for takeaway… but, I don’t know… I just thought this might be nice… but I know it’s too much.” James walks over to the table and reaches for one of the plates. “I’ll just take—”

“Stop!” Regulus shouts, a little too loudly. James startles and almost drops a plate, but Regulus’ feet seem to be working again and he’s in front of James in an instant. Regulus puts his hands on tops of James’, steadying the plate. “What is this?” Regulus says and he still sounds like he might cry. “Did you make this?”

James shrugs again. “I mean, it’s not a feast or anything. I can really only make the one thing. But I thought it might be nice. But if it’s too much or too weird or too soon, I can take it all away and order a pizza or—” James is saying all in one breath.

Regulus pushes up on his toes to cut him off with a kiss. “Don’t you dare take this away.” Regulus whispers when they break the kiss and tightens his grip on the plate so James can’t take it. “No one’s ever made me dinner before.” He can feel his bottom lip start to quiver and James gives him a curious look. “I mean, other than your mom, but those are family dinners. No one’s ever made me dinner. Just me.” And his voice final cracks and he makes an embarrassing whimper to protest when James takes the plate.

James chuckles fondly under his breath as he puts the plate on the table and takes Regulus into his arms. He lifts one hand to his cheek to brush away the tear that’s fallen.

“Well, I kind of, sort of like you.” James whispers as he wraps his arms around Regulus’ waist.

Regulus chuckles softly, “I kind of, sort of like you, too.” And he wraps his arms around James’ neck and pushes to his toes for another kiss.

The slytherin skittles definitely have a murder podcast where they talk about unsolved cases that they 100% didn’t do, and discuss about how smart the killers were like: “They must of had such an intricate plan in order to commit something like this” “Yeah, it’s a shame no one else helped her plan it…” “Oh, I’m sorry, they were probably doing more important stuff, like- oh I don’t know, executing the actual murder”

i will never stop hating the fact that severus snape is so loved like the guy is a misogynistic asshole who bullied kids to the point they were traumatized because of him, mentally tortured a 15yo boy with the memories of his abusive childhood and made this boy's life hell just because his dad married the woman he has a creepy obsession on, joined a terrorist group to kill people he deemed inferior and take over the world, was a shitty teacher, favoured his own house, was ready to get a baby killed and gave the information that could have got him killed without batting an eye, called his best friend a slur, told everyone another teacher was a werewolf and so made him lose his job just because he was petty, was horrible to everyone, was terrible to the woman he "loved" and her son, and didn't even join the good side because he realized his mistakes... the guy is pure evil but he's loved because uwu he was in love with lily 🥺 huh no he was obsessed with her and a bastard actually. you love him and forgive him because he's a man. can you imagine if a female character did all of this ? she would be the most hated character ever.

Idk if literally anyone else thinks about this, but I’m also always thinking about Harry being all sad because people don’t really see him when they look at him, they see the bwl or his parents

And yeah there’s a ton of people who do see Harry as just the bwl, but like,, outside of like,, the order and a couple of others, most people probably aren’t seeing Harry’s parents in him, like Lily and James weren’t famous till they died (outside of James being the sole heir to an old line, although it does raise the question of if people took issue with him marrying Lily since she was a muggleborn, anyways how many people would care that much about James being the last Potter outside of other old family lines?) so outside of the people they personally interacted with, most probably didn’t pay that much attention to them, whereas Harry is hella famous and has been that way for most of his life

Idk if I can actually articulate my point but anyways once again thinking about a lot of people from the marauders generation ending up in the hp generation, and Harry’s all worried about no one caring about him anymore because he thinks most people only care about him as a replacement for his parents, but a lot of the people from his generation are only excited to meet them because they’re Harry’s parents

Idk it’s also funny to me to think about it being like still in the middle of the war and the order really caring about Lily and James being back and feeling more confident, and outside of like Snape, most of the death eaters and Voldemort aren’t fully sure who they’re looking at for a few seconds, like they’ve just been so focused on Harry for so long, only caring about them when that prophecy came out

(and considering it had to have come out around when Harry was born because due dates are so fickle and he was 1 when they were killed, it had to be max a year till they were found, not too long in the grand scheme of things)

Also I’m imagining that this is more teenage James and Lily, so it doesn’t help that they don’t look exactly how they did before dying

(My reasoning for most death eaters not caring about James and Lily before the prophecy is that I believe the theory that most order members weren’t public knowledge, they didn’t have to go into hiding until the prophecy was made (if DE’s cared about them, no way they wouldn’t have been in a protected house from the start), we don’t really know what defying Voldemort means so it could’ve been anything, doesn’t necessarily mean it was in a way Voldemort would’ve cared about till he sat down to figure out which family the prophecy could be about and was like “oh wait”, and some other reasons that make sense only to me and idk how to word them)

(Like I really think they’d be in the same amount of being famous as Tonks would be pre-prophecy, she’s an order member, she’s an auror like James who probably doesn’t take shit from all those death eaters who should’ve been in Azkaban and are now living normal lives, and she has a dramatic family history, her mom was completely disowned from a very well known family for marrying her dad, when they didn’t even completely disown Sirius!! And then she had a baby with a known werewolf, yet there’s not ever really a sense that she’s that famous or that death eaters care that much about her)

Harry is/was a terrible liar, barely passing his classes, socially awkward, introverted, could barely keep his two friends, doesn’t like pranks, short tempered, and he was not smooth in any capacity

Also like Harry was an overdramatic nerd yeah but not a ‘I’m gonna argue with you about how to solve this nearly impossible arithmancy equation so we can combine ancient runes and a charm from the 14th century to start a dance battle in the great hall’ nerd

If Harry and James weren’t related, just like classmates/acquaintances at Hogwarts and someone mentioned that they thought Harry and James were similar at all James would’ve broken down in tears on the spot

I feel like people get the harry potter character’s social standings wrong/off

snape- below the poverty line poor. it’s canon that he grew up in the worst neighborhood in a poor industrial town. so much of his character stems from him growing up as a poor kid with an abusive father

lily- also not rich!! she’s from the same industrial town and lived close enough to snape that they were playing on the same old rusted playground. her family was better off than snape’s but not by much. I would imagine like lower middle class/working class. her dad was probably a factory worker and her mom was a secretary or teacher

petunia- same as lily (obv) and that’s why she’s such a middle class social striver. she’s so proud of the fact that she has a nice house in a nice suburb with her husband’s nice company car parked in front. she sends her kid to a nice private school (but not like eton bc she’s not that wealthy). she works her way up to like upper middle class. but that insecurity of growing up lower class is still there!!

james- he grew up rich and his family is socially influential/connected (it’s implied they’re like aristocrat adjacent bc they’re descended from the perevell’s and related to the gaunts)! but a trust fund kid!

sirius- rich, wizard aristocrat

lupin- I would imagine he grew up middle class(ish). he obv doesn’t have a trust fund or family money but his father was influential enough to be quoted about werewolf legislation. so he was probably like a mid level ministry employee? I’d argue he grew up with a level of money similar to the weasley’s

peter- honestly idk. probably just middle class. definitely not wealthy or aristocratic.

what’s wild is that tom riddle’s the only character who has both british and wizard aristocracy roots. his father’s family was obviously gentry/possibly titled (or at least an ancestor had a title). his mother’s family were direct descendants of slytherin.
