confirming the Ethiopian wolf pollination hypothesis seems so straightforward in theory, like just erecting anti-wolf barriers around some of the hot poker plants and seeing if those get pollinated at the same rate as the other ones, but also I feel like it could be some lab’s 6 year long project that ends up in Nature and answers more questions about wolf dessert time than I could ever think to ask. and also it would give more beautiful photos of wolves between 3 seconds and 1 hour into passionate nectar indulgence. so hopefully with the media attention they’re getting they can do that
#soooooooooo many questions man#some of the people in the tags in the last post were right in that there ARE bats who are pollinators#and those cases of animal pollination DOES indeed result in a creature with a ton of pollen all over its face because it was so into it#in the case of bats it’s certain cacti species if I remember correctly. which is why some have big funnel-shaped flowers#conveniently bat snout shaped and sized and directly in migration paths for no reason in particular#I thought about that too when I saw this tbh#wolf question 102: if these wolves are indeed major pollinators. in what ways are these flowers hidden treat dog toy optimized?#bc ideally you want them to be enjoyers for a longer length of time right? you gotta have up to 4.5 minutes of nectar engagement in there.#assuming more time at a flower stalk = more pollination I suppose

Found this little cocoon on the patio in my backyard.
It's most likely a Girdler Moth (Dargida procinctus). So i'm gonna see what comes out! Little guy was wriggling! So she's still alive :)
Interesting enough, most of the websites I found say these Moths don't appear in Texas, but it's range probably extends to much more than what we originally thought. (either by human intervention or natural range).
#I really enjoy talking about animals and nature! It's just so cool to me!#girdler moth#so cool! I don't find too many cocoons around. So this is really neat!#apparently this species pupates underground? I couldn't find many specifics on their biology or behaviors though#some bugs just don't have a lot of facts online about them yet#bread#my photos#bugs#tw bugs

#snake#snakes#pets#hognoses#hognose#sakura#sakura kurīmu#this was shortly after she joined our family and was still in her baby bin#she wanted a friend so bad she befriended the camera#this poor poor lonely noodle#it was not long after she and scoria were allowed to meet and then refused to be separated#they go in their own little sleeping hides at night#but they both get very upset if the other is away for long#they'll watch me holding the other#and sakura has a conniption if I take her sister out of the room to play in another area#they absolutely need each other#The way she initially attempted to bond with the camera reminded me of Harry Harlow's monkey experiment with surrogate monkeys#it is INCREDIBLY sad that these animals desperately wanted love and affection SO BADLY they turned to the closest they could find#which were inanimate objects that couldn't really love them back but it was better than nothing#that can't have been good for their psychological development for so so many reasons#but now that Sakura has the love and support of her sibling Scoria I don't ever intend to separate them so long as adult hormonal changes#don't suddenly make them go to sweet with each other to aggressive#again I think the agression or at least eating of smaller males comes from psychological issues not the species seeking out and eating them#like king snakes intentionally do#at least with girls I do not have experience with boys#but maybe someone with a strong understanding of snakes and their psychology and body language might pick up where I cannot examine such#once again my tags are longer than the post itself lol

Daily fish fact #498
Smooth-head blobfish!
They live so deep down, between 600 and 1 200 meters deep (2 000 and 3 900 feet), that having a gas-filled swim bladder like other fish wouldn't be very effective. To maintain buoyancy, blobfish instead have a large portion of their flesh consist of a gelatinous substance that is only slightly less dense than water! This allows them to float and swim just above the seafloor with ease.
#you may wonder why i didnt use a picture of a pressurised blobfish. this is because it is not a smooth-head blobfish but a different species#we dont actually have many pictures of smooth-head blobfish unfortunately! the famous depressurised blobfish images are of this species-#but you can probably imagine why i didnt wanna include those....#fish#fishfact#fish facts#fishblr#marine biology#marine life#marine animals#sea creatures#sea animals#sea life#deep sea fish#deep sea#deep sea life#deep sea creatures#biology#zoology#blobfish#smoothhead blobfish#smooth head blobfish#smooth-head blobfish

It's really freeing when you learn that rationality isn't going to be feasible in the long run, not because rationality is this thing that only Truly Enlightened people get the privilege to experience, but because humans are just irrational.
You can know when you're being irrational, and sometimes, it is in big ways. But pretending like that irrationality doesn't exist or can only exist if you're "stupid" only sets you back from growing. Irrationality is part of the human condition - it is impossible to actually be this enlightened person people like to project themselves onto.
#positivity#gentle reminders#inspired because i started feeling disgusted about my HEART BEATING#but irrationality sets us apart from many other species of animals. the contradiction of the human condition is woven into us#what you do about that is recognize it and then seek to expand your world#like... it is irrational as hell to be disgusted about your own damn body and the way it functions without your dorect input but here we ar#i used to feel this pressure to never be contradictory in Any Way and to Always Be Intelligent...#...but that intelligence didn't come from a genuine understanding of the world. it came from what was just a façade...#...what did i have if not Intelligence (but not true intelligence; just the bullshit people THINK is intelligence)#in my quest to be a Better Person i ended up only dehumanizing myself and partitioning myself off into tiny little boxes#it's weird to experience that - to experience your own self being dehumanized BY YOU because you buy into what is essentially propaganda#if this doesn't make sense consider that it's Way Too Late right now and i should have been asleep over seven hours ago

Tbh I really think that more people should pay close attention to nature and their local environment bc I think there's really something special in watching the dynamics of your own ecosystem change over time.
#even if its just in terms of which species become more or less prevalent#like i was able to watch turkeys + turkey vultures + (more recently) northern cardinals appear in southern nb with increasing frequency#over the course of like. ten years.#and its at a point where many popular range maps have not been updated to actually reflect where these animals are popping up#so it feels extra special. like its a secret.#txt

Vent?? Question mark??
#tw vent#cw vent#maybe??#just to be safe#archaeosapien#archaeosapience#archaeosapiens#alterhuman#alterhumanity#neanderthalkin#cavemankin#i feel so out of place#i know i shouldnt worry about whether im actually valid or not but its really hard#considering everyone i see on alter/nonhuman/therian tumblr is. well. at least somewhat well known#i know nobody else who is a neanderthal. literally no one.#i have no one to relate to. i have no one to talk about similar experiences with.#and i feel like a traitor to those who are prehistoric animals eg sabertooth tiger or wooly mammoth or any other megafauna that were-#-around during the time of the neanderthals#because /i/ was the one who put your species into extinction. me and my people wrecked the earth that you call home#my people used the resources. because we are human.#and yet. i dont feel human at all.#its strange: i feel so alive#and every time i feel emotions or physical pain#it reminds me that i am human#but im not human in the sense of a homo sapien. im just always ever so slightly different#im so different. i feel like i dont belong as an alterhuman#nor do i belong as a normal human#i feel like a traitor to so many different groups.#to the humans because you will not see me as anything but primitive and archaic#but to the therians/alter/nonhumans because i am so human that you cannot consider me as anything but human.

species don’t exist — i mean, obviously, they do. but they aren’t objective. species are (as most things are) a cultural construction, a coalition of humans deciding where and when to draw what lines. constantly in debate: did you know paleoanthropologists are unintentionally incentivized to claim to have discovered entire new genera along the path of human evolution because they are more likely to generate media buzz and gain desperately needed funding. thousands of plants may be categorized together but a centimeter’s difference in skull thickness warrants an entire new genus name. we are more genetically similar to chimpanzees than they are to their fellow non-human primates, but due to the rules of Linnaean taxonomy humanity will never be collapsed into the same genus as them because the rules dictate that the older genus name prevails: humanity would never accept becoming Pan sapiens, especially not after it took decades for it even to be accepted that humans were a part of the taxonomy in the first place. even the most basic of criteria we’ve used in the past to decide where a species stops and starts continues to be debunked - fish from entire opposites of the world can produce fertile offspring. analogous evolution can find lines that split millions of years back creating critters that would be side by side in a disney cartoon. categorization is a eternal battleground of western scientific standards requiring universalized objective qualifiers vs. the futile efforts to recognize the unmeasurable amounts of nuance held in traditional ecological knowledge — versus the fact that, inevitably, it all boils down to a vast continuum contained within only a few percentage points of variation in the squiggly lines that tell the cells of everything on the entire globe how to eat
#PONDERING . i should cite some of these with sources but i’m pondering pop science and genuinely curious how many people have got the full#‘the way we categorize living beings into species isn’t an innate trackable quality in dna but a constructed system of assigning names to#certain observable traits - be those visible to the eye or the microscope on a chromosome#<- has had no less than five evolution lectures at varying levels of complexity in the last three years <- anthropology student#i am approaching this both from a scientific perspective (genetic variation is so vast that there are many cases in which species distincti#ons boil down to two creatures or plants just being considered different by the people who interacted with them)#AND an anthropological linguistic one (those ways of categorizing animals or plants are inherently cultural and there is no objective#inherent quality of those plants/animals/fungi/whatever that would say it’s the binomial name or the colloquial name or anything at all)#text✨#idk what i’m doing. species don’t exist much like gender it’s biologically ambiguous and culturally valuable

I must say that lately I've been too addicted to animal crossing to really have time to do anything else but one good piece of news is that I finally made some real progress on my book documenting my experience of seeing TMBG show recap post because I finished describing the pre-show stuff and the first set yesterday so I might finish it this week. I hope. The only problem is that it's already 9 pages long so in a way I'm not joking about how I could turn this into a book instead. And it's not my fault that the stage banter was so good that I'm probably going to end up transcribing like half of it at least.
#goosepost#you know there's another thing that's been kind of making me laugh recently#because back in 2020-2021 my animal crossing era was really really something to behold and something that absolutely ruled my daily life#and i remembered having all these notes on my phone where i wrote down so much stuff concerning both of the games i played then#and the levels of detail and how thoroughly it's all documented is just a shock to me now it's so funny#because ok i wrote down so much about the villagers i had. like when they moved in and out etc#i also had this whole collection of quote unquote headcanons about them all. because the cool thing about these games#is that the villagers are kind of a blank slate. so based on your interactions with them it's easy to come up with more ideas#about their personalities and personal lore and relationships etc. so i wrote down all of those that i had and it's a formidable list#but i also had these massive lists of the total number of villagers. how much of each personality type i had. each species#like i didn't remember most of this. lists of all the campsite visitors i had??? with dates?? and every possible checklist for limited item#that you could get and such but well that one is at least useful if you try to 100% the game ig#i guess what i'm saying here is just that being normal and casual about things i like is just not something i could ever achieve#i should say that for example at the end of 2022 i made a list of all the tmbg songs i had on my spotify top 100 songs list#and compared how many were from which album and ALSO how many were sung by jl and jf (they were represented about equally. btw)#and in the next 2 years i of course once again did similar analyses but this time of the whole list of all 100 songs. yeah.#all in all well what can i say i have a bit of a knack for making all sorts of lists and documenting events and all that#also. making all those animal crossing lists. least allistic thing to do in hindsight to be honest.#ok when i finish that show recap it will be an event that's all i can say for now.#i hope it'll be at least half as enjoyable to read as it is to write and also not quite as much of an effort and time commitment

Why's everyone gotta put all the attention on werewolves? Where's the love for bull peppino or even catboy peppino?!?! They need attention too!!!
(People are furries, I guess (lighthearted)
But really I do not know! Even tho he won that poll ages ago, Bull Peppino got like one ask (which was an M!A, so I save those for the story) and Catboy Peppino got no love lfdldf
I would like to draw them more (yes, even werepino), but getting spammed with just 'more more more' very much soured that, unfortunately)
#ooc post#it also helps to actually like send things for them to doing or questions to answer#also if people were much less pushy about it and using all caps/huge ass lettering I may be more inclined to draw them#but probably not now I still have clones on the brain#I did not spend the last...#4 hours writing clone lore/biology to help folks make their clones!!!#it's like making a species sheet like it's fuckin 2018 again#but if it helps someone I will be happy!!!#and I get to infodump again hehe#and draw more clones#more oddball ones this time since many have been pretty standard so far#well as standard as you can get for weird dough people with animal parts jlkflfd#okay I must go goodbye!!!

"OMG! Did you know that pigs would easily eat a human? How scandalous! Outrageous! Disgusting! Pure proof of their immorality!"
- average Jessica, who eats porkchop with their family once a month
#LISTEN i understand instinctively and subconsciously we way try and protect our own specie - our own kin -#other species would as well!#that doesnt mean that on a concious logical level we should be mad at other species for being fije with eating humans when nine times out of#them we CONSTANTLY eat THEM#also - im not saying that you HAVE to NEVER eat meat and that you are a horrible being for it -#because meat contaijs a lot of important things for your body that are difficult to obtain otherwise#that's also not to say the current power and privilege we hold over other species and that the way we abuse animals is good#objectively planet Earth would be better off if all humans were dead#there would be a ton of complilations especially at the beginning but with time it would be better for the planet#thats NOT to say i think we should eradicate all our existences - just like i wouldn't advocate for the eradication of all mosquito due to#them being responsible for many peoples malaria#which is nor exactly the best comparison i suppose#but no innocent life should be “sacrificed for the greater good”. they deserve to live like all others and its not their fault specifically#its not your fault for being born in a time where nearly impossible not to unintentionally participate in the destruction of earth#its the systems fault#too bad most people in power are huge assholes#alright sorry for yapping.#toki rambles

told my niece that going to the supermarket this morning Sucked and she told me, after much narrowing down of species, that i should get an alligator to take with me and then nobody would get in my way or block me or bash into me while i was grocery shopping.
Told her they don't allow pets in the store.
She told me I should get a Service Alligator.
#a mountain lion was in silver medal position as best species for this job#she also said i could just pretend to be a cat in the store and everybody would avoid me and... well she's not wrong#but the image of an alligator in one of them little coats that service animals wear is great#i Personally think that the best animal to have that has the Least chance of getting you kicked out the store#but would keep people away is a tarantula#can be stealthily hidden from the people who work there but brandished at annoying shoppers#Personally due to my fear of the many legged web shitters#i'd go for a snake
