Henry held your hand tight as you guided him to the elevator.

JJ had just gotten back from a trip to Michigan for a case. She ended up sleeping for a couple hours before she had to go back into work again, all before little Henry woke up for the day. Since she hadn’t seen her son in almost three weeks, you thought it would be nice to bring Henry to her with some lunch as a surprise.

You had been JJ and Will’s nanny for almost 8 months now. Since Will had returned to work and JJ’s job was still incredibly demanding, they started looking for a nanny for their 3-year-old son. You just so happened to be looking for a job and to finally put your experience as a nursery assistant back home to good use. 

“You excited to see mummy?” You asked Henry as you stood in the elevator, his little FBI visitor badge far too big on his little body.

“Yeah!” He replied excitedly, jumping up and down while still holding your hand. You had taken Henry to pick up some lunch at JJ’s favourite place then let Henry pick out a pastry for each of you to have for dessert.

“Alright, remember, you have to hold on tight to my hand, okay? There are lots of people around,” you reminded the young boy, crouching down to his level.

“Uh huh,” Henry nodded, his tiny hand squeezing yours.

The elevator dinged and you gently guided Henry toward the bullpen, silently searching for JJ’s office. Henry stayed close to you as you swerved through the busy agents. You decided to ask someone who you thought looked vaguely familiar.

“Uh, Emily, right?” You gestured toward the dark haired woman sitting at her desk.

She glanced up at you, seeming to recognise you and little Henry almost instantly, “Oh hey! You’re Y/N, right?”

“Yeah, I was just wondering if you could point me in the direction of JJ’s office-”

“Did you know the Australian mainland extends from west to east for nearly 2,500 miles?” someone behind you said, obviously hearing your Australian accent.

Emily rolled her eyes and looked at you, “don’t mind, Reid.”

You turned around to look at ‘Reid’, he was cute, probably the young doctor JJ told you about. You pointed at him, “Dr. Spencer Reid, right?”

He ignored you, “And most of the rocks forming the foundation of Australia are from the Precambrian and Paleozoic time… about 4.6 billion and 252 million years ago respectively,” he looked up at you, “yes, I’m Dr. Reid.”

“Mm,” you hummed.

“I’ll go get JJ for you,” Emily sighed, frowning disapprovingly at Reid. You sat down next to Emily’s desk, picking up Henry to sit him in your lap.

“Where are you from?” Another man asked, “I’m Derek Morgan, you must be Henry’s nanny?”

“Yeah, I am… I’m from Melbourne,” you smiled.

Spencer interjected, “Melbourne isn’t said like that. The spelling negates that.”

“Kid… she’s from there, I think she knows how it’s said,” Morgan retorted. 

You just chuckled softly, “I’d love to hear you mansplain my country to me, Dr. Reid.”

“I’m not mansplaining,” Spencer replied, seeming offended.

“You kind of are,” Morgan added, leaning back in his chair.

“Mansplaining!” Henry exclaimed, making both you and Morgan laugh. Henry bolted from your lap the moment he saw his mum. You stood up to greet JJ as little Henry tackled her in a hug.

“What are you guys doing here?” JJ asked, cuddling Henry close to her.

“We thought we would surprise you for lunch,” you smiled, “Henry picked some pastries out for us too, for dessert… I hope it’s okay?”

“No, it’s perfect,” JJ replied, “it’s just what I needed honestly,” she sighed, giving you a side hug as she guided you to her office.

Henry sat on the floor playing with a few toys you brought along for him while you and JJ talked, “so, that Dr. Reid? He’s a character.”

“You met him, huh?” she leans back in her chair with a laugh.

“Oh yeah,” you replied, “he seems…” you trailed off.

JJ nodded knowingly, “Yeah, he’s like that.”

“He’s cute though,” you shrugged with a small laugh.

“Mm, I’ll make sure to tell him that,” JJ teased.

“Don’t you dare,” you retorted quickly. 

You spent the last half an hour of JJ’s break sitting with her and Henry on the floor helping him do a puzzle he had left from the last time he was here. It was nice for JJ to see her son, she missed him terribly but she knew he was in good hands with you.

JJ had to get back to work shortly after and she squeezed Henry in a tight hug, reminding you she might be late again tonight, which you didn’t mind. 

“Say ‘bye-bye’, mummy!” You held Henry’s hand, waving at JJ. 

“Bye-bye, mommy!” Henry called, waving his little hand around. 

You spun around, guiding Henry through the bullpen again before an idea popped into your head. You turned on your heel at the side of Spencer’s desk.

“Hey, Dr. Reid?” You asked softly.

“Yes?” He peered up at you.

“Ever heard of drop bears?”

Invader Zim issue #40

This specific issue has a lot of things I don't see anyone touch on, so I'd like to :)

1. Zim and Dibs relationship across multiple universes

Already starting with a big one, I know. But this genuinely made me stop and scream. Zim and Dib are together in every universe they exist in. Enemies or friends, they are together. This also reminds me a bit of the zimvoid issues (which I haven't read yet,,, and frankly is a little nervous to!) I won't say anything about it yet because as I said, I haven't read the zimvoid issues yet and I don't wanna get anything wrong <_<;

This also reminds me of the canon (?) ending to invader zim, where in the end Zim and Dib are together. No matter what, in every universe, they always end up together. Destiny from across the galaxy, in every universe

2. Recap Kid

I just love recap kid in this issue, I always thought they were super silly and they are. I know this is quite the step down from Zim and Dibs eternal fate of bothering each other but whatever. Can we bring up how it's canon they write zadf fanfics? Or at least they have their own imaginary au

Invader Zim is such an intense hyperfixation for them they believe Zim and Dib are at the center of everything, and is genuinely upset at even the idea that they aren't,,, they are just like me you guys

Recap Kid was written to be a personification of the invader zim fandom,,, I think they did quite a good job

3. Time loop

The reveal of this universe ending as a time loop really stuck out to me, again, circling (hehe) back to them being basically together forever it really shows how much they care, even if they don't show it. Again and again, they try to one up each other. Continuing nonstop as if one of them will "win." This part of the comic intentionally has a deeper meaning, proved by Recap Kid not understanding

Another little detail I liked is how Dib has a ton of photos of Zim. Again, showing how much he cares. What type of care you can decide yourself. This also reminds me of how he has photos of Zim in his closet in the show

This part of the comic caught me really off guard, so here's the two pages in full!

4. Parental Parallel

This issue explicitly says Zim has "parental issues" with the Almighty Tallest. Saying he craves attention, love and approval. It specifically says the words love and approval. Which reminds me of how Dib is with his dad, Professor Membrane. He also craves the same things Zim wants from the Tallest

Ok so I don't actually have anything I feel like talking about doll wise atm, I prefer making one off posts here n there about the dolls I'm into on twt more than tumblr cause I feel like twt is better suited for one off thoughts while tumblr is better suited for dedicated n thought out posts, at least with how I use it. Which is why you see a lot more wips/shitposts from me on twt than tumblr. so instead I'll just show yall my current collection!!! ANYWAY long ass post time

I've been working on finding and filling out various release lines from different doll brands im fixated on and have been rearranging my collection set up a lot cause of it lol. My shit is scattered all around my room because of how me and my little brother have divided up space for us to display both of our separate collections of things (we are both autistic and insane about our special interests) so there's gonna be a lot of photos lol

TO BEGIN: here's my display case of all my old g1 Monster High dolls I managed to hold onto since I was a kid! I got all of these back when MH initially debuted (when I was around 8 or 9) and all of these dolls have survived through my childhood/teenage years, hence why they're not in super great shape unfortunately lol

the only exceptions to this being the Día de Muertos Howliday Skelita, since obvs that's a recent release, as well as the misc. dolls I have scattered around the top of the case, those are dolls that s0uless has gifted to me over the past 2 years teehee

Moving on, to my current collection of dolls I began purchasing for myself over the past year: starting with this set of shelves next to my bed! I'm mainly using this as my Bratz shelf, but I ran out of room to fit my Skultimate Secrets Fearidescent Dolls where I usually keep my Monster High dolls, so they're there for now.

I only have Jade's reproduction doll because when the Bratz reproductions first began releasing, I was being strict with myself about not indulging in dolls again so I only let myself get Jade since shes my fav. Which I'm sad about, cause I'd love to have all the girls together for both their 20th anniversary reproduction dolls and their Alwayz dolls together. Also, there's a spot left empty next to my Alwayz Cloe bc I have Not been able to find Alwayz Sasha in stores like ANYWHERE for the past 2 months, so I gave up and ordered her online. She'll be arriving here in a couple days!!

Next up is this series of shelves above my dresser that I mainly use to display misc. figures n other shit I've come to own since I was like 12 (you can tell bc of the MHA stuff lmao) but I recently cleared some space so I could fit my Skultimate Secrets Series 1 Dolls (and Spa Day Lagoona + Scare-adise Frankie and Draculaura) somewhere, as well as having a place to display my current set of LOL OMG dolls! And also Bank art doll cameo lmao

Then we have the top shelf of my desk, which mostly has various Knicks knacks compacted into a corner but I put my two LOL OMG Tweens together there, as well as my single Licca doll that s0uless got me for this past christmas and the custom doll they made of my sona for me! <3

(fun fact me and s0uless are currently in the process of making more custom dolls of Eb, Bank, and the triplets but you'll have to wait n see on that one hehe)

And finally for dolls, here's my desk setup, where I display my main Monster High dolls! I mostly just display each Signature Doll + Their Core Refreshes here, but Monsterball Draculaura didn't have space anywhere else so she gets to chill there too lmao

Hehe Hop: -Hc name is Hop Arce Laventon, Arce is his father's last name -Speaks both spanish and english, could not help making him a lil hispanic -Youngest of his friend group, he's 15 and a few months younger than Gloria and Victor -Looks more like his mother, also has a name very similar to hers (I hc their mother's name as Hope) -I hc he goes by any pronouns but mainly uses He/him. He's non binary to me, a little butch, overall pretty comfortable in his own body. I think he'd get more social gender dysphoria (being misgendered, not called by the right name, etc) rather than body dysphoria -I also like to hc him as an asexual Biromantic, no preference -He and Gloria are very close, considered platonic soulmates. They camped together all the time during the gym challenge. They met when they were kids, around 4? Leon introduced them. Hop didn't have any friends as a kid, he also struggled to speak and spent most of his time playin with Leon or just playing alone, it worried him a lil so he tried to introduce him to some of the kids in postwick. When his mom was out, Hop often stayed at Gloria's and Victor's home. -Hc that he got scorbunny. When Gloria was picking, he was silently hoping she wouldn't pick it. Hop wanted scorbunny not just because of Milo, also because fire types are the rarer type between fire, water and grass -Salty over Marnie and Bede getting growth spurts and getting taller than him. He's the second shortest of the group

-Likes to bully Leon a little

-Holds grudges and remembers them. He still has a grudge over Raihan grabbing his wooloo plush and holding it over his head like 10 years ago, main reason he doesn’t like him today.

-I also think that when he gets angry (actually angry), he acts passive aggressive instead of yelling. He does this with a smile on Gloria: -Hc name is Gloria Knight -Shortest of the group (5'2) -Younger than Vic by 30 minutes, both are 15 -During the gym challenge, loved to run off and bite more than she could chew by fighting pokemon way above her team's level. When she got hurt, Hop was usually the one to patch her up, she'd get scolded but always try again -Got through the gym challenges rather easily, the only one she struggled with was Gordie's, she's rather impatient and found the whole mechanic annoying. She still does not shut up about this -Ended up becoming Champion. She has Zacian as her legendary, though she tries not to lean to much on it during her battles. She absolutely steals the cape idea from Leon, he's salty over it

-I think that personality wise, she’d be very chaotic and energetic, jumping from one place to the other. She’s also the impatient one of the group. -She loves to gossip, she's also obsessed with love stories, ironically enough. She's nosy with everyones lives except Victor, -Overprotective of her friends. After Hop lost to Bede in the gym challenge, Gloria death glared at Bede up until the 5th gym, when she joined her when she was camping (Gloria was not invited) and kind of passively-aggressively asked what Bede's deal was.

-Pushed Victor off a small cliff just to see what would happen, he has a small scar on his leg. She also likes to playfully bully him. I hc her as aromantic and ace, she loves love stories but does not want one of her one. She figured this out after Hop's mom kept teasing about the possibility of Gloria n Hop being a couple and they decided to (awkwardly) give it a go. I don't think she'd care much about gender, or even view it as an important concept tbh. She's just Gloria. I think she'd go by She/He pronouns My Hc team for her: Inteleon (starter, she chose sobble) Braviary Runegirus Magnezone Haxarous Victor: -Hc name is Victor Knight -Second tallest -Definitely the more anxious of the twins, unlike Gloria, who tends to run head first into danger, he prefers to be cautious. -Is somehow the luckiest of the group, he finds rare pokemon all the time, he's found a few shines too, he's only caught one though. He also found a dreepy sleeping in his hat when Leon was stayin over at the start of the game, he might have accidentally stolen one of Leon's dragapult's dreepys lol -Has a shiny cinccino he babies, he spends around 30 minutes every morning brushing it's hair. Refuses to let Gloria battle with it because he knows she would not take care of it's fur. His cinccino loves to play with Marnie's morpeko -He falls in love with every pretty face he sees. He was gushing about gym challengers all throughout the gym challenge and Gloria was tired of it. He's probably had a small crush on Marnie, Bede and Hop at least once -I like to think he likes to help his mom out with her garden, as well as helpin with her flower shop. -Gloria likes to mess with him by refering to him as her little brother. Gloria and Victor bicker a lot -He goes through the Crown of Tundra dlc, and he's the one who catches Calyrex. He also catches the galarian legendary birds (with some help). After this, he decides he wants to stay at freezington to study the tundra and why the birds decided to stay there, he stays there for years. (Gloria is definitely not emotional) -Got a few scars from his time at the tundra. He also visits once a year, he uses that week to catch up with Gloria, Hop, Marnie and Bede.

I have no interesting gender headcannons for him sorrry, he's a he/him although he doesn't mind what he's called. I do think he's pansexual, maybe a lil polyamorous

Sonia: Hc name is Sonia Sparks -Raised in Spikemuth, dad is from there. Lived there up until she was 12, she then went to live with her grandma -Childhood friends with Piers, when Sonia went to live in Postwick they lost touch, met again in the gym challenge -Had trouble defeating Kabu back during the gym challenge, almost quit, her ninetales comes from his challenge. She quit after the 4th gym

-Disastrous love life. Dated Leon before her transition as kids, broke up after she quit the gym challenge. Was in a relationship with Nessa before deciding they were better off as friends

-Takes naps during the afternoon and stays up late (usually until 2 or 3 am). Definitely not a morning person, very grumpy if woken up. Wakes up late too.

-Loves to drink coffee, has a yamper mug. She saved up for a coffee machine in her kitchen.

-Her n Raihan sometimes share clothes since they have the same body shape.

-Goes on a girl’s night with Nessa (n sometimes Raihan) every month. Leon is not allowed to accompany anymore.

-A few months younger than Leon, both are 25.

-Was very mean as a kid (I like to imagine she was exactly like Bede as a kid). She was very angry too.

-Used to be taller than Leon during the gym challenge. He had a growth spurt after becoming champion.

-I hc Sonia as a trans girl (she/her), realized a few days before she quit the gym challenge. I also think she’s a lesbian.

-Has a ninetales, rotom, yamper and (gigantamax) butterfree. There’s also a few pokemon she keeps in the lab to study, Victor gifted a dreepy to the lab

Raihan:

Hc name is Raihan Everfrost

-Used to be very shy as a kid, clung to Sonia all the time. Didn’t speak that much either. Sometimes hid behind Leon, even though he was taller.

-Raised in freezington, used to wearing warm clothes, so when he visited the mainland he was shocked by the weather. Had an orange scarf gifted to him by his dad. Adoptive dad is the mayor of freezington. Even after moving to Hammerlock, he still visits his dad at least once every 5 months, texts him often.

-Raihan found Leon in freezington a few months before the gym challenge when Leon got lost and somehow ended up in freezington. Raihan met Sonia when she came to pick Leon up.

-Leon was the one who suggested Raihan try the gym challenge.

-Raihan’s vision isn’t the best, his duraludon helped him with navigation back at freezington and during the challenge. After becoming a gym leader, he got contacts to help him see better (still not a perfect vision) but they’re uncomfortable if worn for a long time so he only uses them in public. His contacts also make his eyes seem very blue, his natural ones are a grey-ish color.

-Very social person, doesn’t like being alone, he also feels lonely easily. He visits Sonia and Leon when he can, usually when they’re working. If Gordie’s free he also visits him.

-Has scars from when he got too close to some of the pokemon in freezington, the more recent ones are from accidents during battles. His duraludon also likes to bite. He also has a scar from when Leon’s charizard bit him.

-Has a small pokemon daycare at the gym where he takes care of injured pokemon, usually has a few dragon types.

-While visiting his dad he found an abandoned pokemon egg. He refused to let it out of his sight until it hatched. A shiny snom hatched from the egg and he brings it everywhere. The snom likes to shoot icicles at him when it wants attention.

-Very common Raihan hc but I like to think he has fangs

-A year older than Sonia and Leon (26)

-My hc is that Raihan’s genderfluid, usually doesn’t mind pronouns but on days where he does, he wears colored bracelets that Sonia made for him. Goes by He/She. He’s also a disaster bi in my mind.

Leon

-Hc name is Leonel Arce Laventon

-His fashion sense are just t-shirts, snapbacks and jeans. Maybe a jacket or two. Has an unhealthy amount of snapbacks, at least 40 different designs. Raihan is getting a little worried.

-Lives in Wyndon, his apartment is there. Hop goes to visit him sometimes. -His first name is Leonel (which is what he's called in the spanish version of swsh, fun fact) he just doesn't bother by telling people. Raihan only found out years after knowing Leon. Sonia always knew.

-His hair is naturally black; he just dyes it purple so that he can match Hop. Also reminds him less of his dad

-Takes at least 15 minutes in the morning to comb through his hair, it gets tangled easily.

-Has very good eyesight, as long as he isn’t too close. He’s a bit far sighted. He does have glasses for this but he doesn’t like wearing them.

-Lightweight drinker, gets drunk easily. In contrast, Sonia has a high tolerance.

-Doesn’t like talking about his dad, gets quiet whenever he’s mentioned. He also looks a lot like him, which is the main reason why Leon made some changes to his appearance after he left.

-Wants the best for Hop, but sometimes he’s a little overbearing. He always thinks he could do better.

-Almost got lost in the slumbering weald as a kid because Hop convinced him to go in. Hop has also told him many lies as kids, some he still believes today. It doesn’t help that Sonia did the same during the gym challenge

-Like Sonia, has a disastrous love life, most of the time he doesn’t act

-Honestly, I don’t have a set gender hc for Leon, it’s just. I don’t know. I mostly go with the hc that he goes by any pronouns and doesn’t really care for gender. I do think he’s some flavor of trans. He’s also a disaster gay in my mind, falls for every pretty boy he sees.

📚 BOOKS — What level of education has your oc most recently completed/is currently in (GED, undergraduate, grad school, phd, etc)?

Absolutely none. At all. Ever. At least not "formally" or "officially." He grew up in the Abyss, and there certainly aren't school down there.

Lady Rhoda taught him how to read, write and do math as well history and biology (sex ed at 20 something is better late than never,right?), but he already had steady income, so there was no need for trying "formal" education. He does research things on his own since he doesn't like not knowing things and having that used against him, though.

Silas most certainly does! While he mainly uses magic as his weapon, he knows how to use spears, harpoons, knives, and probably swords if you give him one. I feel if guns could actually work under the sea, he'll be able to use one. Also, a fun fact from Silas: seaweed can, in fact, be used to strangle if you use it right.

🐉 DRAGON — What is your oc's favourite mythical creature?

I'd say Sirens from Greek Mythos. He finds them fascinating. It does annoy him that so many think these half bird half women creatures look like merpeople, including the mer people. It's probably the first thing he'll infodump about. Finn has heard his rants about the many misconceptions about Sirens hundreds of times.

🍔 HAMBURGER — Is your oc good at cooking? are they good at baking? which one do they prefer?

Silas is good at cooking! Though he technically can't "cook" anything since they're underwater? But I like to imagine there are heated air vents on his property he can go to cook something, though usually it's just not worth the trip when there are many raw dishes like stuffed crab, seaweed wraps, etc that he can make.

Baking involves cooking in dry heat without exposure to flame, usually in an oven (hah! I learned that in Hospitality), so I guess he could do it in those air pockets and mini volcanoes? But it's far from house and not worth the trip, though maybe he will "bake" on special occasions. He likes it and is good it at it. He prefers cooking, though.

🤒 FACE WITH THERMOMETER — Does your oc get sick easily?

Okie angst time

Hah! Nope! He used to get sick a lot as a child, then (and kinda now too, actually...) he was just sickly because of how malnourished he was. His immune system is something else, truly, as he's been exposed to so many sicknesses and infections it'll leave doctors confounded. It's difficult for him to get sick. Well... though it wasn't necessarily an illness, he gave himself "refeeding syndrome" by trying to make up for what he was lacking when he finally had steady access to food.

Refeeding syndrome is when someone malnourished or starved suddenly begins eating again, and the quick introduction of foods can cause problems and even be fatal. This is why it's best to have the process of healing from starvation overseen by a qualified medical professionals.

Now Silas didn't trust doctors at the time, so he never went to one, but what he did do was simply go back to eating the same amount of food he used to so he didn't keep throwing up and getting sick. Morrigan eventually forced him to go to a hospital. (Silas was horrified when he learned what a feeding tube was)

What are the origins of Augustus and the Chosen respectively, when did they first meet each other and what is their dynamic?

Ok so

The Chosen:

His first appearance was in a smosh Vegas episode. 'Playing Blackjack in Viva Smosh Vegas' (Sept. 2020)

How Shayne came up with the character is kinda interesting. Because he was supposed to play Aunt carolyn in that episode, but they didn't have her wig on hand. So he had to come up with something on the fly. He had a vague idea that he wanted to play a character like this already tho. He didn't have a name however, and like he came up with the name "Spencer Agnew" on the fly while being asked the question in the video. That's why a bunch of people think he was supposed to he a parody of Spencer when that was actually never the case. I think that is also the reason they don't bring up that name a lot anymore and just use "The Chosen".

Augustus:

Augustus is a actually a lot older as a character than The Chosen. But he is in a lot less videos.

His first video was 'DAMIEN KNOWS DA WAE' (Jan. 2018). A vr chat video.

After that he appeared in a bunch of maricraft videos. A minecraft let's play series on smosh games back in the day. There bunch of stuff got established about the Character and a bunch people think he got created there because they don't know about the vr chat video . He didn't get a look till 2020 though. Until then he was just a voice and name.

Augustus full name is Augustus St. Cloud and he definitely got heavily inspired by the Venture Bros Character with the exact same name. Damien never talked about it but it is a very strong educated "guess". They got the same first and last same, as well as the same voice and a couple of character traits.

Nintendogs:

They got posted only one day apart as well. In Nov. 2021. The ship name nintendogs came to be because in the Gamestop Video they play nintendogs together

I love their dynamic so much because they are both insufferable nerds. Also the competitive nature of their relationship. My favorite awful guys.

My hopes to ever get then in a video together again are not that high. Honestly I thought Augustus wasn't even going to show up again till the TNTL appearance a couple of days ago.

Fuck it im rambling about my shirt I can't hold this in any longer

Okay, so I got this big white shirt, and I tie-dyed diagonally, with four colors going from my left shoulder to the bottom right. Left to right its pink, green, blue, and then I left the corner white. And I put MEANING into the color placement hehe. First, the obvious, the pink green and blue represent the girls. (I'll get to the white don't worry) The green is placed inbetween the pink and blue because (especially before Amphibia) Marcy was the glue holding Anne and Sasha together. Pink is on top because Sasha was the leader of the group (mostly before amphibia again here). Now I get to talk about the white hehehe classic kiwi angst incoming. The white only touches the blue, and in fact leaks throughout it in places (that was on accident but it works). The white is supposed to represent (extra points if you guessed right) Anne's death. Her sacrifice to save her girls, and keep them from falling as well, hence the white not touching anything else. BUT there are actually little dots of pink and green (which were definitely accidents im pretty messy) within the white, showing how Sasha and marcy were willing to do anything to get Anne back.

hehe. xie lian (i am a sicko). i can also justify this to some extent--jun wu/bai wuxiang (i think mostly bai wuxiang, actually?) remarks positively on xie lian's appearance a notable amount, there's the "makes one ache, makes one excited" bit which i cannot read as anything other than Kind Of Weird And Horny, there's the thing where jun wu tests xie lian's virginity by making him bleed on jun wu's sword (i have another whole meta in my heart about swords as blatantly phallic in tgcf but i assume you do not need to be convinced of this lol)--but honestly i don't fully stand by it. this is a ship i have at least 80-90% because i am a sicko. i hope you can all understand

My non-romantic OTP for this character

ALSO xie lian. im complex. i contain multiple guys. the thing is that i have a beautiful google doc that consists of every time jun wu/bwx is analogized to a parent/teacher and xie lian is analogized to a child and it has . like. 30 quotes? somewhere around there? it's a lot! it's a lot. "i have decided that we are the same guy due to The Parallels but also i am going to enforce this and Make us the same guy by Molding You into Becoming Me" is an incredibly good dynamic whether it is slash or gen, and i do think the "weird forced adult-child relationship going on" reading is in fact more supported by the text than a shippy one. also when i'm not being a sicko about it there's also something deeply beautiful to me about their ending, about xie lian defeating jun wu but also showing him this moment of grace. and of course the Parallels which apply equally when it's slash vs gen. also you may have noticed that neither this question nor the last one do i bring up guoshi. this is bc idgaf about him. sorry mei nianqing . he exists i just Do Not Care

OHOHOHO. I am always ready to help enable someone's reread, anon!

The way I'm gonna do this I think is, I'll put down a list of what I think is worth reading if you want to follow the IDW Prowl arc in a way that hits the main beats that wind up paying off in retrospect, with the luxury of examining the entire continuity from the vantage point of it being complete.

I'll also mark some of this stuff as "optional". Some of this is optional because it is not very relevant to the overall arc, or is out of sync with later depictions in some way; some of it is frankly just optional because it's bad, and forcing yourself to read endless shit TF comics is something that should never be demanded of anyone with limited time on this Earth if you aren't the kinda freak who wants to. LMAO.

Finally: I'm gonna write this as though it's for someone totally new to the whole thing. Because that way I can have fun infodumping. Hehe.

Below the cut is an excessively long explanation of what I would suggest and why. But the short, just-a-list version is:

[OPTIONAL] Transformers: Infiltration

Up front: Infiltration is a miniseries that is mediocre at its best and pretty bad at its worst IMO. It is, yanno. A Simon Furman comic, so.

Why am I putting this here anyway? One, it's the literal start of the IDW continuity and contains a shitton of stuff that will go on to be referenced through even comics like MTMTE. Two, it establishes Verity's character, which is obviously relevant for Wreckers later for our purposes here- and more specifically how she and Prowl actually know each other, which gives some context to their interactions. And three, it establishes the "original" Prowl characterization for IDW1, prior to Roche coming in and mucking about with him later on. Rather than be something which later retcons and developments undermine completely, this is more something where if you've been reading from the start, it makes it feel a bit less weird that every other character isn't constantly going 'why the fuck would we trust Prowl, though'. You get a sense of like 'oh OK, he was being Fucking Normal around them', haha.

Spotlight: Kup

Prowl is actually barely in this page time wise, but it still has big implications for stuff later down the line by way of setting stuff up, and since it is 1) only a single issue and 2) Actually Fucking Good, I'm putting it in. This issue works to help set up the eventual Prowl characterization we get, as well as his ties to both Springer and Kup. (Actually, I would generally say that if you've read Wreckers but not this, go back and give it a read, as it contextualizes a lot for the relationship between those three!)

[OPTIONAL] 99% of All Hail Megatron

This is a similar thing to Infiltration, really. Prowl is in it somewhat, it helps establish a kind of baseline characterization for him at this point in the comics. None of it is super important down the line but it gives more context if you want it for some later choices, and there's a few bits that establish stuff like e.g. his unpopularity with certain segments of the Autobots, that sort of thing. Also uhhh. Spike is in it! Y…ay. But I mean, he WILL be unavoidable in this overall trajectory; and he starts off here.

You can skip it though. Or skim it; again, it's soooo goddamn LONG. Sigh. You know, this series was what was coming out when I got into TF, it put me off IDW for years, hah.

All Hail Megatron #15, specifically

The one bit that's not optional because this is where his entire post-AHM characterization hinges, basically. The first half of this issue, which contains two 'coda' stories, is basically just one long inner monologue of Prowl showing himself to be someone who lies his ass off and manipulates people around him using his position and resources to do whatever he thinks is necessary, and it sets up a major plot point in Sins of the Wreckers with Kup and Springer. So, this is where Prowl goes from being kinda an asshole interpersonally to actually a war crimes man in-canon, haha. …well uh, sort of… we'll get to that later.

Last Stand of the Wreckers

Duh. He's not in this one as much as its sequel but this is still the first 'full' story to explore the version of Prowl detailed above and to cement him. He's an ambiguous little asshole whose presence in this story is less rooted in how much he shows up on the page proper, and more in how much his actions ripple out to effect other people.

Also like. Last Stand is great, it's just a good comic! Treat yourself to a (re)read sometime. Especially with the extras and the like.=

[OPTIONAL] Read all of Costa's run on the ongoing (#1-#31), inflicting horrific psychic damage on yourself

Prowl is in Costa's run of TF and it ties in to the above, sometimes controversially! It seems he was something of an author's favourite, honestly. Anyway it's awful. Actually doing this is a terrible idea. Costa's run of TF sucks so bad it actually kind of fascinates me, but 31 issues of terrible, badly-paced comics is way too much for most people, and rightly so.

The thing is though, Barber DOES pick up on stuff from this run in his exRiD stuff. He often makes sure to try and reintroduce it so you don't have to have read the Costa run to get it, but there genuinely is more stuff in there than you might assume given how much the fandom as a whole would go on to mostly just sort of ignore it. This includes with Prowl, who Costa seems to have latched on to a bit.

Of course, mooost of this run isn't about Prowl. So instead of doing a whole re-read, you can just read…

Read just issues #8, #25-29 and Spotlight: Prowl

Issue #8 is not actually an issue with Prowl in it. It's the issue where Spike kills Scrapper. This matters both because it gets picked up in Costa's run later, and also because Barber is gonna lean hard on a storytelling opportunity for this in early exRiD. Also, this issue is really awful, but will instill in you a loathing of IDW Spike that I think is part of being a well rounded person.

Spotlight: Prowl also sucks. It's basically a comic that exists because Costa didn't want to write the new Prowl characterization but everyone got mad he retconned it for his comic, because the Roche take from AHM's coda was wayyyy more popular than Costa's 'idealistic sort-of-noir-ish-not-really cop' take. Spotlight: Prowl tries to give an in-universe explanation for Prowl's complete personality 180 by giving us a story about how Humans Are Super Special or whatever. However, Barber doesn't retcon it, and in fact will treat this as an important if brief moment in Prowl's life in exRiD.

Issues #25-#29 are the 'Police Action' storyline which involves Prowl finding out about the above murder and confronting Spike about it. This betrayal will be something Barber also leans into very hard, though he's gonna recontextualize it a bit. Similar to the above, all this stuff is gonna get mixed up by Barber into a big old 'Prowl's having Issues around projecting his hopes for being better onto humans and getting burned' later on. So retrospectively, this is when Prowl's most recent attempt to turn a new leaf goes sour, in-universe.

The Death of Optimus Prime

This is the prelude to both MTMTE and exRiD and is sometimes overlooked when people talk about phase two these days. It sets up the new, phase two status quo for the ongoings. This is your introduction to Prowl as written by Barber and Roberts.

The early MTMTE Prowl stuff

Read the first issue, Shadowplay in its entirety, then at least issue #14 (the mnemosurgery/flashback one) from the Overlord arc. I talk about these on here all the time, whatever, you know the drill, it's Prowl And Chromedome Are Awful Exes ft. War Crimes AND Regular Crimes! Roberts has a take on Prowl that is actually pretty distinct IMO, it's fun to read alongside Roche and Barber's work in this period. They're not totally out of sync with each other, just... individual. (Sidenote: this, combined with a chunk of IDW1 fandom not reading exRiD in full or honestly at all, means that IMO a lot of disagreement over Prowl boils down to folks only knowing the Prowl in this comic and taking it as fully representative of the whole canon. Shrug.)

Robots in Disguise ("exRiD")

AKA 'the phase two ongoing where Prowl was one the main characters' so yeah, this one, obviously. This is where like… a good 70% of the Prowl stuff is in IDW, honestly. Anyway, Prowl is especially in focus at the start, where Barber gives us a lot of focus on him in the aftermath of the Earth stuff Costa did with him. The first arc of his runs through issue #16, the end of 'season one' before Dark Cybertron starts. (exRiD has a lot more arcs overlapping at once than MTMTE does, so its arcs tend to run along more issues as they take turns.) But he's around the whole time basically, right through to the end of Barber's time on IDW1. If you want to talk IDW1 Prowl, you basically gotta read everything Barber did with him. And if you want to understand it, you ought to read it fully.

(Note: exRiD underwent mandated name changes etc that mean at some point, the collected editions turn into 'The Transformers'. Use tfwiki if you get confused, haha. Also, Dark Cybertron gets its own trades as a crossover event- but that's the one everyone remembers, so I'll put it here. Buuut speaking of this comic being confusing...)

The Combiner Wars event, which includes but is not limited to exRiD, oh god this comic is so complicated.

There's an event that's set mostly around the exRiD parts of phase two called Combiner Wars. It includes some exRiD issues but is collected in a seperate trade called "Combiner Wars" and crosses over with the Windblade comics. Spoiler alert, Prowl is very important in it, because it deals with combiners and in exRiD he became a combiner. It's also kind of a mess because errrr, a HUGE amount of it was editorially mandated and in multiple cases basically required backtracking and retconning stuff to make work within what was requested for advertising purposes. Not... the series' highest moment, but there you go.

Sins of the Wreckers

Yaaaaay it's the Prowl divorce story! My favourite one!!! Anyway, you can actually read this one whenever after LSotW. The Wreckers stories exist as their own thing really. But this falls soooometime around, oooh, middle of exRiD, gestures at Combiner Wars, etc etc. (Basically: SotW was written while the ongoing was coming out, obviously, and by the time it was complete and being released, the timeline got a bit wobbly, so nailing it down to a super specific timeline in-universe is a bit 'eh'. The final page of SotW #5 was edited to reflect this but just read it sometime after CW, it's fine, whatever.)

This series actually has like. No meaningful impact on the broader universe's plot. But it has so many crimes and schemes! And divorce! And the one big thing: it's when Arcee gets properly sick of Prowl, after their relationship in exRiD was established throughout that comic's run up to this point.

The Titans Return event, mostly for the MTMTE bits, which I guess a lot of people skipped???

Same as CW except, thank god, smaller scale. Has its own trade, and the main bit of interest winds up being that the last two issues of MTMTE before it relaunched as LL were issues with Prowl in focus as part of this event. Apparently some folks reading MTMTE in trades these days have nooo idea these two issues exist because they're in a totally separate trade, oops. Anyway, Roberts puts Prowl on the moon and picks up some dangling MTMTE plotlines. TR makes no sense but these specific issues are fun because they are ridiculous in a way that is enjoyable to read if you just ignore the plot.

[OPTIONAL] Requiem of the Wreckers

...OK, fine, he's not really in this one. You should take the excuse to read it and conclude the Wreckers saga though, I mean. Why not.

Optimus Prime ongoing issues #1-7, #13-14, #22

I'm being nice and not telling you to read all of the OP ongoing even though I kinda want to. A lot of folks skipped out on that comic, even folks who liked exRiD, for a great many reasons. So I'll keep it to the essentials. The first arc includes some flashbacks to Prowl's early association with Orion and gives some insight into Barber's take on his backstory; he's not in every single one of those issues, but you may as well read 'em all, it's a full story. #13-14 is when Prowl comes back from his moon vacation and re-enters the exRiD playing field. And #22 is the issue that features Prowl that leads into Unicron, and. Well.

Sidenote: if the plots don't make sense this is pretty normal, and might not be meaningfully changed by reading the whole series, I'm not gonna lie.

Unicron (+ Optimus Prime #25)

Read the Unicron miniseries! It's what finishes off the IDW continuity and, crucially, is Barber's grand finale. Lost Light had its own ending where everything was at something of a remove, as a series that was able to exist a little more as its own thing. The other series, however, had Unicron. Prowl's in it, he does stuff. Some people hate this miniseries, I really like it, regardless it's the capstone to the entire segment of the comics Prowl has been a major player in. And then read Optimus Prime #25, the IDW1 universe's epilogue of sorts, which ties it up not so much in plot terms but thematically. Prowl gets his last word in there.
