Omg, I want to print this out too. I know a lot of stores like walgreens, rite aid, walmart, staples, etc… have photo departments and you can get a bunch of photos printed in high quality for a pretty good price. (I don’t even know if you’re in a country that has one of these stores—I still wanted to give these examples though in case you don’t have these stores and can find your country’s equivalents). Anyways, what I’m imagining is getting this printed on high quality paper and then cutting it out and assembling it. It would be so cute!!

How would you have wrote a Hannah route?

I’m all in for a underdog story! Hannah is the ultimate underdog. And this is having her as a LI? So maybe MC has the chance to save her from leaving on the third day which leaves sending someone else on a plane ride back home, whoever that maybe based on your gameplay ofc! Imagine how that would change the game?

Or maybe that just leaves someone single and a chance to earn their keep until the next elimination? Day 5? when Lucas and Henrik enter the villa!

I think a Hannah route would be how Rohan is in season 1: she’s thankful that you picked her and probably feeling a little sorry for herself but MC is open to the idea of being MORE than friends instantly? MC hints at it. There’s flirtations on MC’s part but being a little clueless or in denial rather—Hannah would just label that as MC being friendly and it becomes frustrating! A slow burn if you will but we also learn that Hannah isn’t sure about her sexuality. I HC that she comes from a religious family and they’re in the group of religious people that do not support anything other than heterosexuality.

She’s questioned her sexuality but never acted on those feelings or discussed them with any of friends or even her (hc) sister.

I HC that Hannah is pan and isn’t open/sure about it until after some time off the show BUT we’re talking gameplay rn. She might be a little hung up on Gary since it was evident that he wouldn’t be picking her and struggles with how to talk to him and the fact that she still likes him? And wants him to like her back. She confides in MC and Lottie a lot (Lottie a lot of the time when she gets too nervous to talk to MC) since the both of you seem to listen to her at her lowest.

She’ll try to crack on with the other guys, although it’s clear that they’re not giving her a chance—romantically(which i still say is fucked and mean how they did her regardless even in a platonic sense. Sure she might not be your type but damn you can’t at least try?) but HELLO you’re right there?! That might last for awhile until Henrik and Lucas enter the house and she decides that she’ll want to couple up with Henrik which causes Lottie to be catty and voice that “MC wouldn’t like that, since they’re basically in love with you.” Or something along those lines, we know how she is!

Which makes Hannah nervously want some answers although her attention is shifted on Henrik a bit. Lottie doesn’t seem to like that while also struggling with her feelings for Gary, yet she can usually be open with Hannah about her feelings since Hannah is usually open about hers! instead lottie shines light on other issues or dilemmas in the villa because she likes to do tit for tat to get her way.

Lottie wants Henrik as her backup if she can’t figure out how to approach her Gary situation. Which Hannah also finds out due to Chelsea spilling the beans + Lottie sharing a kiss with Gary. This brings out a new side to Hannah, bringing out the vengeful side of her. She gives Lottie the silent treatment for a couple of days to gather her thoughts. She shaves the side of her head and seeks validation from Jakub to piss everyone off, not realizing how it mainly hurts YOU.

Majority of the villa stans MC and tries to build a relationship with Hannah (at least I hope they would be a little bit kinder) so I think out of the boys she would eventually become closest with Rahim and Noah? And they would try to tell her but at this point, Hannah doesn’t want to hear anything.

I think the route would be frustrating & problematic with what we had and applying my own twist on things if Hannah stayed. It isn’t until casa amour when Shannon explains how Jakub was not loyal to Hannah and had two girls fighting over him, that Hannah has to sit back and really look at this all.

That she gets to write her story and this doesn’t make her happy. What if she decides to leave? What if she doesn’t?

She wants to clean this all up. After faking a connection with whomever in casa, she realizes that it’s MC who’s always been there, and always had her best interest at heart but she kept searching for it elsewhere. MC doesn’t deserve that and she apologizes but first needs to talk to Lottie and Gary before she can figure out what to say to MC who’s either a) over Hannah/not forgiving b) dating around since their relationship is open at this point and is no one’s second option c) forgiving and been ready to start their relationship and win this thing!

Ultimately this entire show is not easy for Hannah, she’s shed some tears, loved and lost, and is pushed in multiple directions to find her identity in more ways than one.

Here we go again with my recap ramblings! Had to do a bit of nip/tuck for this one, it’s a bit lengthy.

My opinions, as I've stated before, are based on my limited knowledge of the Star Wars universe. I have NOT seen anything outside of the movie franchise, so please bear with me...

- First off I would like to express my appreciation for this episode going balls-to-the-wall with Ashoka, instead of spending an unnecessary amount of time working towards her introduction. Considering we spent two episodes just GETTING to her, the fact that it was like "BAM! There she is!" was very refreshing.

- Also I would like to thank Filoni for establishing her badassery UP FRONT, instead of having her do some sort of "Surprise! These are my special skills!" maneuver. The concept hit home on the first try, and it hit HARD.

- I know people are iffy with Rosario Dawson (I'm not that caught up on her to know the details myself), but she does bring a certain......presence, I guess......to this episode, but just as the character, not really HER specifically.  She seems more powerful when she's silent, versus when she speaks, her portrayal of the dialogue seems kinda monotone for my taste honestly. (I think it's worth mentioning that, while I understand people wish for Ashley, it would involve "black face" makeup on some levels to achieve Ashoka's skin-tone, I don't think it would've worked, no matter how skilled the makeup artists are)

- The ghastly forest makes me think of the lighting technique they used for The Half Blood Prince film

- As I've said, I have not seen the Clone Wars series, so I'm not familiar with Ashoka's animated fighting techniques, but I do love how practical she is with the lightsabers in a dark setting, turning them off to avoid too much attention, and only turning them back on right when she's ready to attack to really take her enemies off guard

- Din narrating to the baby has me in my feels a bit, this dude is really going through the motions isn't he? He's trying so hard to keep it together, acting like he's fine that his whole world is about to change in a way he's not fully prepared to handle.

- Can we take a moment to discuss how observant the baby is? He may not know about circuitry to help with ship maintenance, but he has the wherewithal to know when he's headed to a place that's potentially harmful. Episode 7 in season 1, when Din mentions going back to Nevarro? The baby immediately tries to adjust the ships trajectory to avoid going to a place of which his only memories consist of him being experimented on and possibly almost killed. And NOW? Now he recognizes that the name of the planet Din is taking him to will be where they separate, so OF COURSE his first instinct is to, not only avoid leaving Din's side at the pilot's seat, but to also seek out one of the few tangible objects that brings him comfort: THE METAL BALL FROM THE LEVER........baby boi is so smart, we do not give him enough credit

- Baby REALLY didn't want to leave his papa.......also DIN LET HIM KEEP THE BALL PLS

- Din walking through the town reminded me of the Two Towers when the party arrived at Rohan and Gimli was like "You'll find more cheer in a graveyard"

- I have to wonder what was going through Din's mind upon seeing the prisoners in the electric cages. I'm sure he was disgusted, but everything presented in this series is VERY deliberate, ergo Din was meant to see this to IMMEDIATELY establish that this magistrate was someone he wouldn't want to be allied with, a feat that could've been established with the intro into the town alone, but it seems that the best way to really drive home just how terrible these people are is voyeurism.

- The town versus inside the magistrates gated home? Night and day. The contrast is intriguing, how "dead" the town looks but inside the second gate there's life, somewhat flourishing.

- If Din KNEW that the magistrate was referring to Ashoka, than he basically tricked her into helping him find her under the guise of making a deal. If not, than he figured it out during their first fight upon seeing how she maneuvered around him. Either way, we stan one smart cookie.

- Lang reminds me of Number Two from the Austin Powers series

- BATU BATU BATU BATU

- I love the fact that Din is including the baby in his bounty hunting process, not just telling him they've reached the coordinates, but also letting him know to start looking, IT'S BRING YOUR SON TO WORK DAY......(but like EVERYday for him tho.....)

- Okay but like LOGICALLY I KNEW THAT BESKAR CANNOT BE DAMAGED BY A LIGHTSABER BUT MY HEART STOPPED FOR A SECOND

- DIN PACING LIKE A NERVOUS DAD IN THE DOCTORS OFFICE, POOR BABY

- I have to wonder how the baby "talks" via the Force, is it full "sentences"? Clipped "sentences"? Or is it kinda like Renesmee from Twilight where she "inserted" visuals into another person's head? I know they can "feel" each other's thoughts, but I've always wondered exactly HOW they "feel" them...

- I understand people are a little put-off by the lekku, and that cosplayers have done it "better", but we have to remember that cosplayers aren't doing (multiple) fight scenes, the head-piece has to be practical in its design, as well as authentic. There are stunt-doubles, and having to create multiple versions that not only can withstand constant movement, but also won't break easily. Not to mention when you try to do a live-action based off an animated series, it almost ALWAYS looks "wrong" on some levels (live-action anime? it's awkward af, no matter how hard you try...)

- About the Grogu controversy: I'm on the fence, but will most likely come to love/appreciate the name. Is it within the realm of what I was expecting? Nope. Is it possible that we are ALL projecting our own ideas of what name the baby "should" have had, so much so that almost ANY name they would've given him would've sounded "wrong"? VERY distinctive possibility......this is Star Wars after all, names are meant to sound "weird".  Grogu sounds like a Star Wars kind of name, in fact it's kinda fitting for a species that looks reptilian-ish

- THE BABY HEARING DIN SAY HIS NAME FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE WHIPLASH IN THAT HEAD-TURN, BUT LIKE.....I love the slight parallels to Grogu's and Din's name-arc: They both went DECADES without hearing their own names, and the reveal's are so contrasting, Din hears his name during a time when he's in danger, the baby hears his while having a heart-to-heart. I'm curious about how Din was feeling in this moment, thinking about how long Grogu must've gone without hearing his own name, and how Din longs to have someone say HIS name with an almost reverent tone

- YODA NAME-DROP.....but also Grogu looked at Ashoka when she said the name, I wonder if he knew Yoda

- Some people have mentioned Ashoka's lekku not being long enough for her age, I'm wondering if they compensated with the "wrinkles" in it? Can lekku have wrinkles?

- Grogu trying to be good for his papa, but also NOT wanting to use his powers because he KNOWS it would mean that papa has to leave him (and Din's little head tilt to get him to cooperate) I JUST....I CAN'T

- Ashoka telling Din to connect with Grogu, and Din shifting around all like "LOOK ITS BAD ENOUGH I HAVE TO LEAVE MY SON WITH YOU, CAN YOU NOT MAKE THIS HARDER FOR ME???"

- FATHER AND SON GAME OF CATCH AND DIN'S EXCITEMENT WHEN GROGU CAUGHT THE METAL BALL, MY OVARIES CANNOT TAKE THIS MUCH FLUFF

- Subtle Anakin reference, given what happened to the younglings after he went dark, it's a good thing Grogu was taken.......but by WHO???

- Din calling the lightsabers "laser swords" and Ashoka's little grin like, she WANTED to correct him, but she was enjoying Din's dorkyness???

- Din trusted her enough to let her borrow his pauldron??? I HAD A MOMENT

- DIN GUNSLINGER DJARIN

- Did my eyes fucking DECEIVE ME?? DID ASHOKA CUT THE SPEAR IN HALF????? Like this is the second time I'm watching this, the first time I noticed it I was like "No fucking WAY", but I'm seeing it AGAIN, IT WASN'T A TRICK OF THE EYE....so beskar is only lightsaber RESISTANT??

- Lang vs Din was like Johnny Ringo vs Doc Holliday, "You're no daisy!"

- More name-dropping. Did Ashoka kill Elsbeth? They never show her after the exchange.

- Din could've jetpacked his way back to the ship, but chose to walk instead. The way he avoids actually waking up Grogu at first, holding him for a bit, then taking the time to get him ready. Din baby who are you fooling? You're not ready, and you never will be.

- DIN STICKING HIS FINGERS OUT TO LET GROGU HOLD HIS HAND

- Ashoka knows okay?? She KNOWS that Din and Grogu are meant to stay together

- Din calling out Ashoka for trying to weasel out of the deal vs calling out Bo-Katan for changing the deal: No malice in his voice, he barely put up a fight, then sounded relieved after she gave him an alternative, one that could lead to the baby deciding NOT to become like the Jedi and instead choosing to remain with this buir

When I started shipping them: Oh man, I can’t really say for sure, since I highkey hated Sasuke at first... probably after Sasuke left the village cuz that’s when Naruto started acting real gay

My thoughts: They Hit Different Bro... they’re one of Those Ships. I love it a lot man they make my heart ache... they’re basically soulmates like bro what else can I say

What makes me happy about them: Their personalities match so well... the fact that they do end up back as friends by the end of Shippuden is very nice

What makes me sad about them: the Angst... Sasuke leaving the village really drove a wedge into their friendship and Naruto’s constant longing for him to come back and determination to be the one to kill him after he finds out that Konoha put out orders to kill him is. Very Sad.

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: I’m not a big fanfic person so I can’t really say? I haven’t read any bad sns fics so far

Things I look for in fanfic: Again I’m not super big on fanfic buuuut I’ve yet to see a fic where Sasuke is gay/ace and since that’s a big hc of mine. I Would Like To See It.

My wishlist: ??? Not really sure what this means and Naruto is long over by now so, nothing really?

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: I would have preferred it if Naruto and Sakura ended up together tbh. Sasuke doesn’t really give me the vibes of marrying At All if it wasn’t Naruto, so him not ending up with anyone would have been just fine by me

How I feel about this character: Big Love. probably one of my favorite characters of all time ok he means An Lot to me at the moment

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: (in order from super duper like to kinda vibe with,) Kakyoin, Weather Report, Polnareff (post p3), Rohan, Anasui

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: His friendship with Koichi is really valid... he really walked into Morioh and adopted that polite boy almost instantly

My unpopular opinion about this character: Not sure how unpopular this is but I think that nerfing him for parts 4 and 6 was not only necessary but completely realistic and justified. He was past his prime and canonically had never used the time stop since his fight with Dio!! And in part 6 it’d been Even Longer and he’s also 40 now so you can’t blame him for being Bad At It... leaf him alone

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I WISH. I wish there was at least one small arc in p4 where Jolyne was in Morioh. It’s probably super inconvenient to the plot but like. Dadtaro with tiny Jolyne please... Josuke could even babysit her.... it’d be so cute why didn’t this happen :pensive:

Favorite friendship for this character: Probably Kakyoin! Yes I also ship them romantically but like. Shipping aside, Kakyoin’s the crusader that Jotaro gets along the best with... they are Epic

Ok I’ve been thinking about “Boromir Lives Succession Crisis” fic all day and I would love your Opinion on how best to achieve the first half of that clause. I feel like there’s basically 3 options 1) Faramir goes on the quest instead 2) Frodo successfully slips off unnoticed and Boromir doesn’t confront him and the party isn’t split when the orcs attack 3) Everything happens as in the book but Boromir isn’t shot (1/2)

(2/2) I’m kind of leaning towards either 1 or 3. 1 because I think it would strengthen Boromir’s claim and pretty much eliminate any bond he developed with Aragorn over the quest, making him more likely to contest the claim, and it has the possibility for good Fari drama. 3 is probably more straightforward but gets real hairy in sorting out the specifics, as well deciding at what point Boromir’s opinion on Aragorn would change etc. Curious how you would handle it!

👀👀👀 I stan you specifically for letting me talk about this- OK SO. 

I have played out each one of these possibilities with @emynarnens so many times that this is the only thing I’m qualified to do now. So to start off!

I don’t think I would recommend #1. Boromir’s effect on Aragorn is a pretty vital piece of Character development for him. Viggo Mortensen actually mentions it but we can see it in the Books too, Aragorn goes from considering the men of Rohan corruptible and weak willed to agreeing with Boromir that he does not believe they gave in too Sauron’s bribery. Essentially Boromir challenges Aragorn to rethink his attitude to humanity, both in others and within himself. Faramir is far too enamoured with the idea of Aragorn’s nobility and royalty and I don’t think he would challenge him in the same way, or at all really. 

#2 and 3 do create issues in terms of the general plot of merry and pippin needing to be with the ents, but if Boromir doesn’t feel he betrayed the fellowship and committed a grievous crime he would perhaps feel a stronger sense of self worth and therefore is certainly shot but doesn’t quite die. Too wounded to stop the Hobbits from being taken, but not dead. Although I would also say that Boromir’s momentary madness and loss of control and the guilt he feels afterwards is also an important piece of character development for him, even if he dies immediately afterwards. He realises he sacrificed too much of his own integrity and lost too much hope in his single minded drive to defend Gondor. His sacrifice for two hobbits, who are just his friends, brings back some of that care and concern the Ring’s influence had worn away. 

But have no fear! I wouldn’t call it necessary to take away any of what happened there. Remember in the books Boromir was not just pierced by three arrows, he was pierced by VERY many, and Pippin tells us Boromir was still up and fighting when he lost consciousness. Indeed, just before Pippin blacked out, he saw Boromir pluck a shaft from his side and continue with the battle, so reasonably the change simply could be ‘he wasn’t shot as much’. Obviously adhrenaline can keep you going and all that but these books are anything if medically sound and Boromir is just Like That. Wounded but not dead is a valid sacrifice and keeps the beats of the narrative intact. 

I would also recommend this because there needs to be some reason Denethor believes his eldest son dead. It is a vital contribution to the darkness that eventually drives him to suicide and means you don’t have to work around Denethor also being alive when you’re talking about the whole issue with the coronation. Denethor can have witnessed a glimpse of Boromir’s fate through the Palantir, and then Faramir perhaps does find Boromir’s horn cloven in the river and Denethor takes this as proof of death in his darker state of mind. 

With this in mind it’s also kind of necessary to have the hunters actually leave a wounded Boromir where he is and believe he will not survive. (I’d recommend this also just for the jab you can have Boromir give along the lines of, “What are you all waiting for? Will you compose a song for my funeral? The hobbits are getting further from you at every moment, go!” Because good god you three it’s enough to question how much you really care about your hobbit friends) 

AND another thing is that this still allows Aragorn his indecision, whether to go with Frodo or rescue the Hobbits, which is also characterful and important. AND it reinforces Boromir’s love of the hobbits, demanding the three hunters leave him there to die in order to save them as he was unable too. There’s still a repentant sacrifice there. 

But anyway the point is if Boromir is alive and perhaps found ‘dying but still with a chance’ by a company of Eored, then I would suggest he is forced to recover somewhere secluded throughout the events of Helms Deep. This is to make sure Pippin and Gandalf still think he is dead by the time they leave for Minas Tirith. It’s a shame because that would be cool for him to be involved, but if Pippin knows Boromir is alive then it’s unlikely that he wouldn’t tell Denethor that and, as I’ve said, Denethor’s grief is important. 

If you really wanted Boromir at the battle at Helm’s Deep, you could go along the route of Denethor not believing Pippin, but that’s a stretch. I suppose you could also consider that the shock of it has already taken it’s toll on Denethor and even if he hears Boromir is alive, it’s done it’s job by the time Denethor believes Faramir will die and the City will be taken. 

(Unless you do wanna contend with Denethor being alive which I also like but that does take away from the narrative simplicity of it just being about Boromir and Aragorn’s conflict and the complex emotions surrounding it. Denethor does not believe Aragorn should be king and it’s unreasonable to think Boromir would go against his father in this case so it detracts from the indecision somewhat. But I would say Denethor being dead is the better option just for this specific idea.)

As far as worrying about whether Boromir would contest Aragorn’s claim goes, I wouldn’t worry about that. Boromir never once accepts the idea of Aragorn as his King. Certainly they are friends, they work well together, he likes him, but his responsibility to his people and the laws of Gondor and his Father’s wisdom and wishes (especially now he’s dead) would supersede any personal connection they have. And really the best case Aragorn has for being worthy of the throne is ‘It was in a Prophecy and also people like me’ so Boromir has plenty of reason to be like… suspicious about Aragorn’s aptitude. 

I think having them as friends adds some interesting emotional elements to it actually, the balance of friendship vs responsibility. You mentioned Boromir’s opinion of Aragorn changing, but the truth is it never does. Boromir essentially ignores the fact that Aragorn is asking for the Throne for the entire book and just accepts him as a man who’s willing to give aide to Gondor. Which is all Boromir really cares about at the time, not really expecting any of them to live long enough for this to be a problem. The conflict between him and Aragorn about the kingship is manufactured by the film entirely. 

In the end the probability is that Aragorn would become king, Aragorn did a good job at becoming heroic and he does seem to have burst out of nowhere and saved everyone. Even the Lords are for it, it appears. I think the eventual crux of it would be the kinds of requests, clauses and checks Boromir would demand Aragorn agree too. How they should change the nature of a King’s rule to fit in with this more egalitarian society Gondor’s grown into. Boromir would also ensure Aragorn went through the proper channels, that a council of Lords was held and his Kingship debated and voted on, make the whole thing something everyone participates in and understands. 

You mentioned Faramir drama too but we’ll get that in SPADES when he’s fighting with his brother over his treatment of Aragorn. Faramir really is thoroughly taken in by Aragorn’s mystique and his reaction to him is to cast off any and all tradition and agree to his coronation on the spot. This could also be because Aragorn saves his and Eowyn’s life, but still he and Boromir will have some serious issues, perhaps for the first time in their relationship so that’d be super fun to explore.

IN CONCLUSION!

I’d suggest absolutely nothing changes except for the severity of Boromir’s wounds. Aragorn still finds him, he still begs Aragorn to save Minas Tirith. The only difference is he verbally tells Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas to leave him and save Merry and Pippin and he is alive when they go though they do not expect him to recover. 

He is found by some Eored and taken to a nearby Rohir settlement (In LOTRO it’s a small town called Walstow and the Thane is a little plagued by the Uruks running around so it could also be a kind of mini adventure for Boromir with helping them repel attacks and eventually being able to evacuate to Dunharrow?) But whatever happens, he doesn’t rejoin his friends until after Pippin and Gandalf leave for Minas Tirith.

ON THE OTHER HAND… 

I know everything I just said but like… forget it for a moment because I have a second suggestion that absolutely flounces every one of the points I just made but I like it because I’m a sap. 

Gandalf slips up and tells them all on Caradhras that he doesn’t know the password into Moria. 

Aragorn: “What?! Then why are we even discussing it? Boromir’s right, we should risk the Gap of Rohan, at least we will not be so enclosed.”

Gandalf: “I can figure the password out when we get there!”

Aragorn: “Tosh! We could be discovered, pursued or killed long before you rattle through every possible way inside. Nope! The Gap of Rohan it is!”

And then they make their way down south and oh wow! Here’s the Prince of Rohan and he has an entire camp of loyal soldiers who could defend this little party. 

And Theodred exclaims ‘here is Boromir! My (love, partner, boy) friend! I, of course, trust him and his fellows. Let me just finish this skirmish- whoops! That was a close one thanks Boromir, who I love, for being here to save me from that Orc or I would have been dead! Wouldn’t that be terrible? Anyway we are still losing here so let me and Erkenbrand and Grimbold all escort you to safety.’ 

‘Oh? Your two young Hobbit friends left in the night did they? How strange, I hope they come to no harm but I suppose we shall all have to focus on defending Helms Deep for now. I’m very glad I’m here with you Boromir, to be a friendly face who knows when you are acting strangely and remind you of your humanity and softer side, you didn’t seem to be doing very well in the midst of these very strange and not particularly empathetic friends of yours!’

Avelera’s epic “Why I Love Boromir” post aka

Boromir. So much more than a meme. 

Agarlandoffreshlycuttears asked me to talk about my love of Boromir since I have a few Aragorn hate posts out there and boy does this topic of discussion take me back. 

(For the record, a lot of my earliest opinions of Boromir was formed as an impressionable 14 year old experiencing her first head-over-heels male crush (I mean seriously, look at this guy:

) but people aware of my love of Thorin have probably noticed I tend to have a thing for complicated characters who experience a fall from grace. I find them much more interesting than characters who never need to struggle with morality or see a serious risk to their soul. I don’t hate Aragorn as such, but I have a lot of issues with the way his character was handled, so I hope the negative stuff comes across as more tongue-in-cheek and critique-oriented rather than bashing.)

So let’s begin from the beginning with some very Nuanced and Intellectual™ reasons to love Boromir.

- In Rivendell, Boromir first shows us how awesome he is by riding in on a horse like a goddamn Disney prince *swoon*

With that out of the way, let’s list his many virtues:

Boromir is practical. 

During the Council he proceeds to bring up some rather valid points about the risk of the whole “the Hobbits are bringing the One Ring to Mordor” thing. We, as viewers, know they’re the main characters so the hobbits will probably succeed. But from an objective viewer within the Middle Earth universe, this plan to destroy the Ring is batshit crazy from the outset and it only gets worse when we decide hobbits are the ones to do it. We’re literally going to take some of the weakest, smallest, least experienced creatures no one has ever heard of in the world, give them a super weapon, then have them go with an honor guard of 5 effective fighters (including Gandalf who has been known to fuck off at random intervals when escorting hobbits on dangerous quests) to the only place in the world where, if the Ring goes there, Sauron wins. Game over. He gets his lich-y phylactery back and gets super powered like it’s goddamn Mario Star Power. Everyone dies. Boromir’s people in Gondor (and Aragorn’s people, if he ever gets around to it) will die first. Horribly.

But, y’know, the power of love and friendship will somehow win the day so once literally 4 guys decide that this admittedly horrendous plan is the only one they’ve got, Boromir gamely comes along. He can’t even pledge his sword because Aragorn took that line already, thanks Aragorn. 

Why not just take my kingdom I’ve been training to rule my whole life while you’re at it. OH WAIT.

Boromir is kind. 

As the Fellowship cross Middle Earth, climb the mountain, the shots of Beautiful New Zealand are endless, we get the freakin adorable scene of Boromir training Merry and Pippin to fight (thanks for nothing Aragorn, I guess giving them swords was as far as you thought out how helpless these guys are). If this smile doesn’t melt your heart I’m not sure we can be friends anymore. 

But seriously, everything about the friendship of Boromir with Merry and Pippin gives me happy smiley tears.

Boromir is human. 

They climb some more mountains, Boromir has one of the most freaking amazing scenes in the whole movie where he picks up the Ring and is clearly hypnotized by it, illustrating its danger and the danger he poses to the Quest as a result. 

I’m going to leap ahead here and say why I love this scene, and that’s because Boromir actually faces the threat of the Ring, unlike Aragorn. We do have a moment between Aragorn and the Ring later when Frodo (recently traumatized by Boromir’s freak out) asks Aragorn if he can protect Frodo from himself. The fear of being like his 2,000-years-dead ancestor flashing in his eyes, Aragorn sends Frodo along (to almost certain death). 

But the thing is, the Ring was never really a threat to Aragorn, we never really got a scene of him struggling with it at all. It’s what makes his “fear of being like Isildur” so baffling and annoying. At no point does Aragorn actually struggle with that risk. Unlike Thorin (and I’m gonna have to Thorin-stan here for a moment because my love of Thorin is intimately tied into my love of Boromir) who fears the hereditary madness of his family for good reason because he does succumb to it and then break free, Aragorn’s fear comes across as whiney (and even carrying borderline internalized hatred of Men given to him by movie Elrond) given its lack of justification within the films. Told to us as Aragorn’s main emotional motivation and fear, besides that of annihilation if the Ring isn’t destroyed, it ends up being extremely weak that he supposedly fears this ancestral corruption which never has any tangible impact or risk to him. Frankly, the only time it really comes up that Aragorn is related to Isildur are both times pretty freakin’ awesome for him because they involve raising a ghost army to Deus Ex Pulverize Sauron’s forces and becoming king of a frickin’ wedding cake of a multi-tiered beautiful city that Boromir had to talk him into liking in the first place.

*Ahem*

But anyway, that scene on the mountain is super creepy and gorgeous and I love it. 

Boromir is hilarious.

Boromir is empathetic. 

Boromir is the one who spots the trauma that the Fellowship has just gone through by losing Gandalf (and Gimili is no doubt still reeling from the revelation of his family members’ deaths in Moria) and calls for a quick rest now that they’re out of the mines. If I hadn’t already been in love him from the training scene with Merry and Pippin, I probably would have fallen even harder at that scene. He’s empathetic in a way a good leader should be. While Aragorn’s point is valid about the arrival of the orcs and their lack of time, he comes across as kind of a dick about it and I can’t help but be uncharitable in my view of him as a result. It feels like the threat of the orc’s pursuit is set up just to make Aragorn right and Boromir wrong, since without that threat Aragorn would very clearly be the bad guy in that scene. Would 5 minutes have really made that much of a difference?

Boromir loves his people. 

Probably THE moment that won me over about Boromir was the moment in Lothlorien when he gives his worshipful account of Gondor to Aragorn.  In the extended edition the scene continues to one where he chastises Aragorn for not showing more interest in Gondor.

I think this pinged me at a young age for several reasons. 

- First, a love of the wider “off screen” world. LotR is a sprawling book, but a film can’t always show what’s going on outside the narrator’s view. Through Boromir in this scene and several others, we get a sense of what our characters are fighting for. It would have been easy for the stakes of LotR to remain the lives of the Fellowship members, certainly they are the ones in the most immediate peril. But Boromir’s speech reminds us of the wider world and the threat it faces, the nations that will fall and the lives that will be ruined if Sauron wins. It re-frames his reasons for wanting to use the Ring - he feared the argument against using it was just a matter of moral purity, at the risk of Gondor falling and with it that everyone he knows and loves will die. 

Can Boromir truly be blamed for not understanding the threat of the Ring? I think even the most ardent fans are sometimes puzzled over exactly what the Ring does, and what it would do should it fall into the wrong hands. Throughout a story based around the threat of the Ring, the Ring itself and its powers remain strangely abstract. So I don’t think Boromir’s view of the debate as an unconvincing one between the very tangible threat of lives lost vs. the more abstract risk of moral corruption that even Elrond and Gandalf never clearly express is understandable. We as the audience have greater perspective on the threat of the Ring, and by the end Boromir understands that threat too, how at the very least the Ring will turn friend against friend in the pursuit of its power, and he fully repents. 

- Second, Boromir’s love for his people highlighted Aragorn’s failing, which lead me to the heart of much of my dislike of Aragorn’s character. As someone who read the books before seeing the movie, I was rather annoyed by the whole “reluctant king” trope that was shoved onto Aragorn for a modern audience. It is a rather cliche moral imposed by PJ that we see throughout his Tolkien works, that those who want to be king will be necessity be bad kings, and that tropes annoys the fuck out of me throughout fantasy in general. 

(Certainly there is the risk of the power-mad, but I think that puts us at risk of one of our current issues, the paradox that those who want power in order to good are therefore under suspicion and those with greater experience at governing are seen as a threat so we should only allow the incompetent BUT ANYWAY)

Aragorn in the books wanted to be king. He worked hard to be worthy of the people of Gondor by serving in various militaries such as Rohan’s throughout his younger days. He wanted to be king in part to be worthy of Arwen, but also because he loved the people of Gondor. His avoidance of the throne was about building up the necessary skills to be worthy of it. By throwing out that aspect of his character, and replacing it with a nebulous fear of being like Isildur, an ancestor that died two thousand years ago (which is like someone fearing they’ll be just like their ancestor, Julius Caesar, or Elizabeth II fearing she’ll be just like Henry VIII if we want to take Numenorean life spans into account by which I mean completely batshit crazy example of a fear BUT ANYWAY). This alteration to Aragorn wreaked quite a number of consequences. 

For example, it kinda makes his attitude towards Arwen seem kinda shitty because instead of working hard to be worthy of her he’s kinda just a smelly ranger who is actively avoiding his responsibilities in order to traipse around the wild and serve in random militaries like Rohan for funsies and while I respect Arwen’s choice to love whoever she wishes, it kinda makes Aragorn the deadbeat in that relationship.

But the major consequence of reluctant king Aragorn is that, yeah, I kinda gotta agree with Boromir - his lack of interest in the people of Gondor is really troubling. It wouldn’t be hard to see Aragorn as someone who prefers the elves (who raised him) and generally from his actions and his words sees Men as a lesser people. That’s not someone I would want as my king, quite frankly, if I were a Gondorian. 

In addition, we have the fact that Boromir’s family the Stewards have been ruling Gondor for centuries. It would literally be like the aforementioned descendant of Julius Caesar showing up in Rome today and saying they have an ancestral right to rule there, ie it’s batshit crazy but we’re living in a fantasy world SO ANYWAY. Boromir (and Faramir) have more experience and arguably a better claim that Aragorn in the films. Denethor was a good ruler until he got his hands on a Palantir, but even if Denethor is now a poor ruler, I still have a lot of sympathy for him because this was done to him by evil forces beyond his control (in parallel to what happened to Gollum and to Bilbo and Frodo through the One Ring. Literally. The Palantir and the One Ring are both connected to Sauron who is actively corrupting them. So anyway, all the Denethor hate makes me sad and I’m probably the only person in the whole fandom who actually has a soft spot for him.)

So to recap, that conversation in Lothlorien to me showed that Boromir 1) cares about a wider world than the Fellowship, and that the Fellowship isn’t the only thing going on. 2) That he’s a pretty damn good leader who cares about his people, in contrast with Aragorn. Even if we accept that “Learning to love the people of Gondor” was part of Aragorn’s character arc, and Boromir’s fridging death demonstrably pushed him in the direction of “learning to love the people that he’s “destined” to rule” can I just point out Holy SHIT Aragorn why do you need your friend DYING to figure out why maybe you should care about the people you’re supposed to rule????

But back to Lothlorien: Boromir feels the increasing presence of the Ring. He is shamed by Galadriel’s scrutiny, she scares the shit out of everyone, particularly him but the reason she so quickly identifies the threat Boromir poses is because she feels that threat as well. Both Galadriel and Boromir share the quality of protectors of their people who have a Ring freakout in front of Frodo (though Boromir gets a lot more flak for it than Galadriel). 

I don’t think that point can be overstated. Boromir’s vulnerability to the Ring comes from his love of his people, not from personal ambition or love of power, except in how that power can protect others. It’s one of the evils of the Ring that it takes that which is good in people and twists it to evil purposes. (One could even argue that the Ring did this to Frodo as well, using his love and protectiveness of the Shire to make inroads into his mind and heart, when as a result of agreeing to carry it to Rivendell to get it out of the Shire he ended up being that much more exposed to it.)

Boromir is remorseful.

To be honest, the scene of Boromir succumbing to the Ring’s call is one of the greatest emotional beats in the films. I don’t feel any need to defend Boromir’s actions, they’re obviously terrible there, but godDAMN do they drive home the threat of the Ring. And here’s the thing, that threat wouldn’t be nearly so scary if it didn’t happen to such a demonstrably good person who clearly cared so much about the hobbits that he was willing to die for them. Even without his guilt over his attack on Frodo, you know he still would have gladly died saving Merry and Pippin’s lives.

Let’s not even go into how fucking heartbreaking everything about his death is because I might burst into tears right here. Suffice to say, Boromir’s death was heroic. He didn’t need to die to redeem himself, he deserved to live, that argument in general is stupid. His death is tragic because of what a great person he was, and the Ring is terrible because of what it did to such a great person.

Boromir was a hero.

We do get that one shining, gorgeous moment in The Two Towers EE with the retrospective on Boromir. Standing by his brother, surrounded by his men, we get a glimpse of the leader he was before he faced the corruption and deprivation of the quest. For all that Boromir is often used as an example of the corruptibility of Men in the narrative, it is clear that he was always a hero, and that the reason the threat is so fearsome is because of the heights he fell from in his moment of doubt, and how brief that fall was speaks to the strength of his will. 

Boromir for me into the category of fascinating Tolkien characters who truly struggle with evil. Frodo, Bilbo, Thorin, Galadriel, Theoden, Denethor, and Boromir all go head to head with the corrupting powers of Sauron (and Sauron-like forces) and risk losing their soul to them. Some fail. Some do terrible things while they’re fighting off that influence. But for them the risk is real, what will happen if they don’t throw the influence off is clear, and the avenue into their hearts is often their love of their people and those dear to them in life. That makes them complex, interesting characters. It’s the reason I find Aragorn’s flirtation with corruption to be unconvincing, because he never seems truly at risk and there was never a real moment where it seemed he might give in or what the consequences would be if he did. By contrast Boromir did show us the risks. He was complex, he showed us the world beyond the narrow scope of the nine members of the Fellowship, he showed us what was at stake both on a global scale and on a personal one. As a result, he was one of the most fascinating characters in the film trilogy and I love him to this day.

Veiling of the Sun, by @thegraytigress​ - Boromir succumbs to the Ring for more than a few moments, joining forces with the orcs sent to collect Frodo, and everything that can go wrong does go wrong. He eventually wakes from the haze to see with horror what he has done, and must set out on the road of his own redemption while the Fellowship tries to put back together the broken pieces of a quest gone horribly wrong. Heart-wrenching, one of the greatest LotR angst fics I ever read.

You walked down the length of the stone corridor slowly, to take notice of the scenery around you. Lothlórien had become like your home after many years of traveling. As a child, you were a wanderer, so it didn’t surprise anyone when you decided to go off and search for the ancient elves realms that only few humans knew about.

The first time you met an elf was entirely by coincidence, and was the main reason you chose to look for more elves. His name was Taeyong, and he was your age or older (as no one can really tell with immortal beings). His dark hair was straight and flowed down past his collarbones, covered by a circlet of bronze. Your thirteen-year-old mind thought he must be royalty.

After talking to him, you found that he was only friends to royalty. Having been orphaned sometime during the war with Morgoth, he had been taken in under the wings of Lothlórien elves and their families. The elven prince, Sicheng, was exceptionally kind to Taeyong, always including him in royal activities so that Taeyong felt like royalty himself.

He knew the truth of course, which is why you found him in Fangorn Forest. He liked to be alone to think, but your company was never rejected. Perhaps he found something perplexing about you as a human. He had never met a nice human, and the only stories of the race of men he had learnt were horrible ones that resulted in the deaths of his elven ancestors.

You were nice to him however. You never pushed to learn about his life, or what he was thinking. Instead, you had asked him how to climb a tree. You had asked to see his pointed ears. You had asked him to teach you entish, so that you could talk to the Ents as they slowly roamed around the forest. You always wanted to learn something. Taeyong knew you hadn’t initially come to him for friendship, and the thought gave him a strange sense of comfort.

It took him forever to tell Sicheng about you. He was afraid that once you met him, you would go to the prince with all your questions. He was used to that: being surpassed by the prince. Although the royal family had taken him in with good intentions, there was always the underlying truth that Taeyong just wasn’t one of them. He was a dark elf. His skin was honeyed and his hair was blacker than the night itself. The only thing he had in common with the fair Lothlórien elves was the color of his eyes. Still then, his eyes were more of a charcoal gray people recoiled at, while Sicheng’s were a soft silver that people cooed at.

You had never really thought of Taeyong as your elven friend. You thought of him as your first friend; someone who you could learn things from. He was someone who would help you become better at your adventures. No matter where you went, you always returned to that hideaway spot in Fangorn Forest, where the Ents hadn’t yet awoken, to talk to Taeyong. You told him about the dwarven kingdoms and how they had more gold than you had ever seen in one place. You told him about the pleasant little hobbits, who lived in their warm holes, content with tea and pastries. You talked about the Old Forest and how Tom Bombadil was still doing very well, and he says thanks for asking. You talked about Bree, and how the mead was always too strong for you and the company was always a bit strange. You talked about Ithilien, the Moon-land, and how it was a cozy little place filled with beautiful foliage. You talked of Mordor, and how it was too far away, but you still had nightmares about the evil creatures you knew lurked there. By your twenty-first year, you had travelled nearly everywhere in Middle Earth. Yet, each month you would leave to find somewhere you wished to go and visit, then loyally return to Taeyong to tell him what you had learned.

When he finally told Sicheng about you, he found out that you had yet to explore any elven kingdom. He was so used to rangers coming in and out of Lothlórien, requesting blessings and gifts, that he hadn’t even realized that you hadn’t been inside of the kingdom itself.

“I’ve thought about it,” you’d say, “but I’m afraid to intrude. I know how elves feel towards human travelers.”

Taeyong had brushed your concerns away. “You’re my friend, though. They’ll want to meet you.”

So you agreed. You finally met Sicheng, the renowned prince, to find that he was quite witty. He and you clicked well, but he couldn’t replace Taeyong. He never would. From then on, Taeyong wasn’t afraid of telling others about you. He realized that you were loyal, which was a trait rarely found in elves. Humans did have that strange resilience to stay by their friend’s side until the very end. It seemed you had chosen to stay with Taeyong. Taeyong had unknowingly chosen you as well. His entire family could tell that you were someone Taeyong had attached himself to. Which is why, as you were off visiting Rohan, they decided to sit down and talk to him.

They reminded him that he was over a century old. Which was young, yes, in elven years. However, you wouldn’t even be around for a century. You were a mortal. Humans were mortal and there was nothing they could do it gain immortality. They reminded Taeyong that the gleam in his eyes wasn’t that of a friend. They admitted that they knew Taeyong had fallen in love with a human. They told him to be careful.

Taeyong was hurt in every sense of the word. Never in his life had he begged for mortality like he had the next few weeks. How could the universe be so cruel that it would not only take away his parents, but also threaten the one he loved?

So he tried to fix the universe himself. He tried to change fate, as if it were his to control. With a long knife, he chopped off his long hair, resulting in a messy cut that barely brushed the top of his collar. Then he put on human clothes and left with nothing in his pocket but a few biscuits of lembas bread. He wanted nothing more than to become a human. He wanted a life humans always talked about in their books. They were boring, short lives, filled with nothing but following expectations but somehow Taeyong thought he could endure that if you were by his side. Perhaps that’s how humans thought, too. Perhaps all they wanted to do was find that one person who would make their short, mediocre lives seem a little bit longer and a little more exciting.

Taeyong’s disappearance was the entire reason you were at Lothlórien and not at Fangorn. You had come here first to talk to Sicheng about the situation. Sicheng hadn’t known what to tell you other than the truth, so he revealed that there was no real way you and Taeyong could become one. You would die far too soon for it to become anything. Everything Sicheng was telling you wasn’t news. You had thought about it plenty of times before. There was always an extra something there between you and Taeyong. You never thought you would have to confront the truth so soon.

You felt immortal. You felt like there was nothing you could do that would kill you. It was jarring to remember that you were just a human with limited time and organs that could fail any moment.

You went to the Fangorn Forest. There, on his usual tree, was Taeyong with his hair cut short. It was attractive, just brushing the tips of his pointed ears. His gaze lifted to see your form, and you could see all the emotion hidden behind the moon nestled in his eyes. “Y/n.”

You didn’t answer. Instead, you climbed the tree with little effort until you were sitting beside Taeyong, shoulders brushing. “So, I went to Rohan. You wouldn’t believe how many horses are in that kingdom, Tae.”

“Really?” he asked weakly, buying into the game you were playing. The game of acting like nothing had happened. “Did you get to ride any?”

“Get to?” you scoffed playfully. “That’s all I did while I was there. I’m sure the stablehands were mad at me. There was this one named Kun. He was so annoyed that I kept making him stay at the stable so he could do his job and clean the tack after I was done.”

Taeyong quirked a small smile, but it was nothing compared to his usual shining grin.

You couldn’t ignore it anymore. “Tae, I know I’m not immortal. It’s okay.”

With that, the damn fell. Elves didn’t cry, for they were strong and graceful creatures. For the first time in his life, Taeyong felt a warm sting being his eyes and the overwhelming urge to just sob crawling up his throat. He couldn’t stop himself from wrapping him arms around your body as he cried into your shoulder. “It’s not fair, Y/n. I love you so much. I want to be a human.”

Your heart broke at his voice, and the amount of hurt inside of it. Every lilt was accented by pain that had been bubbling inside of him for a few weeks now. You were the only person who could comfort him.

Before either of you really knew what was happening, you were kissing. Kissing and crying and touching and just… feeling. Feeling the passion that the two of you had known for that past years that neither of you had acted upon. Feeling the slow burn of love that was quickly turning into ashes that flew into the sky, never to be seen again. It wasn’t an I-love-you kiss. It was a goodbye kiss, and both of you knew it.

Taeyong’s tears stained your cheeks when he pressed into you, his teeth grazing your lips as a growl of frustration escaped him lips. He was frustrated at the world, and the rules that somehow made it to where he couldn’t be with you.

Even if the two of you stayed together until you died, he would still have to live for the rest of his life with you gone. It was better to forget you and move on now, while he and you both were still young.

He finally let go of your lips, his forehead rested harshly against yours as he breathed heavily. “We never should’ve met,” he said.

“I know,” you replied, your eyes closing in pain.

“However, I don’t regret it.” He pressed a chaste kiss to your forehead. “Good luck on your travels, Y/n. I’ll be sending blessings your way. I hope you find a human man who loves you so much more than I ever could.”

“Taeyong…” You cupped his cheeks tenderly, looking into those penetrating eyes one last time. “I love you.”

“I didn’t think this was going to be so hard,” he sighed. “I’ve got to go.”

As he climbed down the tree, he looked back sadly, “It might be best that you don’t return to Lothlórien for a few years. They’ll be watching me closely. Elves can die of a broken heart, you know?” He gave you a bitter smile, “They might make me forget you, and if that happens, I’m sorry.”

You wiped your eyes, “I understand. It’s for your own good, of course.”

You watched him walk away, until there was no evidence that he was even there, save the tear stains dripping down your cheeks.

You felt mortal. Although you had always known your mortality, it hadn’t registered.

You felt mortal, and there was no feeling more devastating.

His mother used to work for a printing press company until she along with 15 other employees were laid off back in Sargodha

She was out of work for months becoming a stay at home mom (which his father initially wanted) 

While his father continued in ironwork

They uprooted their family to the uk two years later after Rohan’s father also got laid off

Rohan was about 7 years old when they moved to Wolverhampton

he picked up on the English language faster than his parents

Who are really his cousins/friends of the family that his parents brought home from Pakistan after their parents passed in a tragic accident

he was eleven years old when he met them at the airport and was super excited to have sibs! & even encouraged his mom to let him buy them something they would like sort of like a ice breaker which they seemed to appreciate 😭

His parents wanted him to major in software engineering or any form of engineering really but that quickly became a “hell no” vs “hell yeah” after those courses started to rot his brain?

So what does he do? He decides he’s gonna major in psychology instead!

That seems more of his speed? Kinda? As long as he’s not dealing with that hardware shit then that’s cool with him tbh

Psych held more of his interest since he doesn’t have a issue with the whole science aspect tied into it but it’s deff lengthy and can be draining sometimes too

He doesn’t psychoanalyze everything like our girl marisol does

but Rohan will either think it or think nothing of it and just continue to go with the flow lol. He’s that kinda guy

Why was he majoring in this in the first place? Just to say he had the degree in something maybe?

Always had the obsession with all that comes with the circus, he had his paternal grandfather to thank for that

His grandfather used to juggle along with other forms of entertainment but mostly juggling on the street back in Pakistan to earn $ since there were a lack of jobs

The atmosphere there also was what got him into doing handstands cause why tf not

You can absolutely guess that the acrobats, trapeze acts, and tightrope entertainers are his favorites to watch

His parents just assumed it was a hobby of his and never took him serious even tho he openly said growing up that’s something he would like to do in life

He now understands the purpose of “freak shows” even tho he can honestly say those parts of the circus used to terrify him until he learned that not everyone is the same and there should be no shame in that

He will train on the side until he finishes his degree to make his parents happy but he knows he truly belongs in the circus and that’s where he will be someday whether his parents approve or not— after all this is his life

Lives on campus and is currently looking for a flat off campus to share with a roommate or two (he thought about asking jake & Tim but decided against it FOR NOW)

Mostly had temporary and odd jobs to get by each semester, has not had a steady job due to fully being a full-time student

He’s tried to be a full time student and full time employee (working as a package delivery man) just to burn himself out and never attempted to be a part time employee. It was not something he could handle sorry

When it comes to relationships, it never seems to be what he thinks it is? One moment things are going great then the next he’s in the friend zone so he’s never quite sure where he stands with his significant others?

Which is why he thinks it’s safe to always start off in the friend zone or unintentionally puts those who have interest in him in the friend zone because that’s what’s comfortable to him

Yasmin actually joined one of his lives, which he doesn’t do too often but he couldn’t sleep one night and thought he’d give it a go. She’s quite nice & quiet but he ultimately felt calm around her + they bonded over bohemian lifestyle & his love for the circus + a little about their cultures

Long term goals? He doesn’t have a set timeline of when he wants everything to happen because pressure is not fun

but he wants to be in love and loved back, wants to be married, wants to have kids, wants to try out the circus for awhile and if that doesn’t work out he can always fall back on his psych degree—he just wants to be happy and share that with someone, that’s one of the biggest adventures he can possibly have
