I think every computer user needs to read this because holy fucking shit this is fucking horrible.

So Windows has a new feature incoming called Recall where your computer will first, monitor everything you do with screenshots every couple of seconds and "process that" with an AI.

Hey, errrr, fuck no? This isn't merely because AI is really energy intensive to the point that it causes environmental damage. This is because it's basically surveilling what you are doing on your fucking desktop.

This AI is not going to be on your desktop, like all AI, it's going to be done on another server, "in the cloud" to be precise, so all those data and screenshot? They're going to go off to Microsoft. Microsoft are going to be monitoring what you do on your own computer.

Now of course Microsoft are going to be all "oooh, it's okay, we'll keep your data safe". They won't. Let me just remind you that evidence given over from Facebook has been used to prosecute a mother and daughter for an "illegal abortion", Microsoft will likely do the same.

And before someone goes "durrr, nuthin' to fear, nuthin to hide", let me remind you that you can be doing completely legal and righteous acts and still have the police on your arse. Are you an activist? Don't even need to be a hackivist, you can just be very vocal about something concerning and have the fucking police on your arse. They did this with environmental protesters in the UK. The culture war against transgender people looks likely to be heading in a direction wherein people looking for information on transgender people or help transitioning will be tracked down too. You have plenty to hide from the government, including your opinions and ideas.

Again, look into backing up your shit and switching to Linux Mint or Ubuntu to get away from Microsoft doing this shit.

Last year I lost my uncle and his entire family in a missile attack on his displacement site in Rafah, and Al Jazeera YouTube reported.

Today, I am in pain as I miss the dearest to my heart, my father, who suffered from a stroke that caused him quadriplegia. He could not cope with the catastrophic life as we lived in a tent that was like a grave. His weak body was exposed to malnutrition as a result of not providing the necessary food for his condition, and the severe cold caused him to have a heart attack that led to his immediate death.

I wake up terrified every night. I check on my family, whom I fear will die of cold 🥶😰

And it was not limited to this, but our tent that shelters my family, children, and my brother Samer, who suffers from a chronic illness, was flooded and swept away under the dirt as a result of the heavy rains. Our tent has become worn out and does not protect us from the winds and rain ⛈️⛺

One lore change in ROP that does make me sad is a particular aspect of Celebrimbor's death: that he died protecting the Nine, instead of the Three.

In the show, he dies protecting the Nine. But hours later, Sauron ends up with the Nine anyway, which makes Celebrimbor's sacrifice feel...not hollow...but futile.

On the other hand, in the book, he dies protecting the Three. And Sauron *never* gets his hands on the Three, in large part because of Celebrimbor's bravery and determination. It makes Celebrimbor's sacrifice feel all the more triumphant and crucial, in that he actively thwarted Sauron from gaining even more power and influence than he already had.

It's a little thing, but it always makes my heart feel heavy and sad when Sauron picks up the bag of the Nine Rings, because in the end Celebrimbor died for something Sauron was going to get anyway.

I’m reading that new memoir about working at Facebook,”Careless People,” and it’s just fucking insane.

At one point Facebook wanted to be an international hub for organ donation. The “Lean In” lady asked why she couldn’t go down to Mexico and buy a kidney if her four year old needs one. This is literally on p.57. What the fuck else is going to be in this book if that is on page 57

Just as an initial point of order, Boromir doesn't quite claim HE'LL kill all the halflings, he says he believes Frodo will sell them out to Sauron and get THEM all killed. Though he does curse all the halflings;

‘Miserable trickster!’ he shouted. ‘Let me get my hands on you! Now I see your mind. You will take the Ring to Sauron and sell us all. You have only waited your chance to leave us in the lurch. Curse you and all halflings to death and dark-ness!’

But more to the point, firstly I know exactly the post you mean and it brain blasted me too I think about it everyday. However, whilst there is some argument to be made that Boromir's curse 'took hold' and 'worked' I personally do not think it had a compulsive power behind it.

Like yes exactly, technically some hobbits suffered death and a proverbial 'darkness' of fear, you could say, but not all of them. And of the ones Boromir actually meant, 3/4 of them live long and healthy lives whilst the 4th goes off to live in paradise. Ultimately neither darkness nor death had a permanent grip on any of them, which is kind of the usual aspect of a curse.

Secondly, Boromir does not have the power to do this. He may be of a noble line of Dunedain that can trace their lineage back to numenor, but it is a defining part of Boromir's character that he has inherited few to no traits from that lineage. He bears no divine impetus to his actions, he is not blessed like his father and brother.

He is also not taking the power of the ring up in this moment, which is the power that Frodo used to cast his Geas. And he is also not like... 'right'. Usually these curses require an actual act of betrayal, they are the universe watching an injustice and agreeing that it should be punished, essentially. But Boromir is mistaken and raving in his ring-induced 'break', the halflings are not the betrayers he percieves them as and he in fact could be called the actual traitor. So he has no power of universal morality on his side either.

In essentials, quite a few characters in the books lay down these 'curses', Gollum himself being one of the most habitual cursers, but Haldir does too in the fellowship, and Grima after. None of these curses take hold, and I think Boromir numbers among them. ALTHOUGH in fact, the next line in the book actually says;

Then, catching his foot on a stone, he fell sprawling and lay upon his face. For a while he was as still as if his own curse had struck him down; then suddenly he wept.

Which is obviously more of a literative affect than Tolkien claiming the curse literally worked on Boromir instead, he is not dead QUITE yet. But considering he very soon is exceedingly dead, and that the meta narrative views that as a good, deserved and just ending, to the point that his brother calls Boromir's corpse 'more beautiful than he ever was in life', that is a more likely consequence of this curse than any of the varying hardships the halflings suffer later on. In my opinion at least!

Hey, so a while back, I saw an AMAZING thread from LOTR fans about Frodo cursing Gollum and placing a gea on him and so damning Gollum to inevitably fall into Mount Doom and take the Ring with him—and how this is a recurring theme in the Legendarium where curses and oaths have real power and are not to be messed with. And while again the thread was AWESOME, it also made me think of something.

So we all know how Boromir tries to take the Ring from Frodo in Fellowship of the Ring, and then when Frodo fights back, Boromir screams that he’ll kill them all and curses him and all halflings to darkness. Given how we’ve established that curses have serious power and all of them come to pass—is Boromir laying a curse on Frodo? Because you could argue that it worked on Frodo but all the other hobbits seem to not be damned to darkness (I would argue the Scouring of the Shire doesn’t even count because the hobbits were able to rebuild). So what’s going on? Is it that Boromir didn’t really mean it? Did the curse only fall on Frodo?
