I'm starting to get the sneaking suspicion that Rick Riordan treated the Magnus Chase books like side pieces to the Trials of Apollo. Because this trilogy does not feel nearly as well put together as the Kane Chronicles. The Kane Chronicles was a book with minimal connections to his other books. They work as beautiful standalone pieces of literature. The Magnus Chase books don't. Percy Jackson is in the last book. Annabeth Chase is in all three of them. The books always end with hints to the Trials of Apollo, etc. It paints a bad picture.

Also, the Magnus Chase books feel more haphazardly pieced together. In the Kane Chronicles, every character and plot point made sense. Set was chaotic and evil, but he wasn't the apocalyptic big bad like Apophis. He even helped our heroes. He was multifaceted. Miquel Desjardins was a man who valued traditional values and the old ways, but he still died trying to save the Kanes. This antagonist gave his life to save our protagonists, because he learned the error of his ways. That's beautiful. Sadie Kane can sometimes be abrasive, but she always means well by her brother and her friends and family.

The Magnus Chase books do not have that nuance. Alex Fierro is meant to be likeable, but half of their scenes involve them just teasing Magnus or calling him rude names. They don't show their warm side the way Sadie Kane did, and it makes their scenes feel very uncomfortable sometimes. Also, we don't have any villains like Set in the Magnus Chase books. Loki is just the big bad, without there being anything worse than him. But since Loki behaves almost exactly the same way Set did, you half expect there to be something more going on besides just one god's revenge quest. But there's nothing else. It feels simplistic, in a way that I can't quite say I love.

Also, the Hotel Valhalla is not explained nearly as well as the Egyptian afterlife was. Rick Riordan pretty much said that everyone sees what they want to see after they die. That did lead to a bit of a cruel remark about atheists just losing existence after death, but I can forgive him that one (mostly since his explanation in the Kane Chronicles was the only good afterlife explanation he ever gave). He pretty much talked about how the afterlife is different for everyone. It's personalized based on faith. So that was an explanation I liked. Mostly because it means that i don't have to go to the greek afterlife (which rick riordan always portrayed so horribly).

So, I really am starting to think that Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard was a series Rick Riordan haphazardly put together. Don't get me wrong: I still like it. There are still good scenes and elements. But it feels less cohesive than a lot of his earlier books. And no judgement on Rick. The man pumped out around 20 books in 12 years. That's impressive. It might explain why I find some of his later books slightly worse, too.

But again: this isn't meant to be severely judgemental of Rick. I still like his books. And I definitely like him as a person. Well, in the one way can like a celebrity they don't know very well as a person. He just seems like a nice enough man. I've never meant him, but he seems pleasant. So I mean so disrespect when I criticize his books like this. I just need an opportunity to get everything off of my chest.

During this sequence that’s supposed to feel victorious and like, “yeah things aren’t perfect, but the good guys won today!” Merlin watches Guinevere and Arthur hug intimately and you know what? He looks sad.

He looks like he wishes he could touch Arthur so freely and affectionately. He looks like he’s desperate to be seen for everything he is and everything he’s done for him. He looks like he’s accepting he’ll never be with Arthur like that and it’s breaking his heart.

That man is deeply in love and he can’t do anything about it. He is happy for them because he just wants them to be happy, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t feel like a dagger in his heart.

It reminds me of that quote from Sherlock, “you look sad when you think he can’t see you”

"jeonghan, are you in your boxers again?" you say with a deadpanned look, and jeonghan looks up at you from under the blankets, a sneaky smirk on his face as he chuckles lowly. "nuh uh."

you had just come from downstairs after making a bottle of milk for your newborn, and jeonghan was acting suspicious before you left, ushering you out of the room quickly as he claimed to "so very badly need" a shower and hair wash.

you had trusted him, yes, but you knew something was off the moment you entered your bedroom, newborn cradled in your arms as you noticed the lack of pajamas out on jeonghan's vanity. you had told him not to sleep with his boxers on again unless it was "that time", and you had told him you weren't in the mood to "play around".

"jeonghan," you say again, and jeonghan doesn't reply, giggling like a schoolgirl as he disappears under the blankets. holding back a smile, you walk to his side of the bed, throwing the blankets off of his milky skin and sighing at the sight in front of you.

"i thought you liked this pair though, angel." jeonghan says as if he's not almost completely naked in your shared bed, and you heave a heavy sigh, softly laying the baby beside jeonghan.

"it's not about if i like the pair or not, hannie. i'd like for you to put something on." you flush, pinching your arm to fight back the urge to glance down at jeonghan's toned stomach and milky white skin. he notices this, chuckling proudly as his brown eyes lock with yours.

"you know, you're not very convincing. you're trying so hard not to stare down at my chest." jeonghan says with a sultry tone, and you throw a dirty shirt at him, heart fluttering with the way he laughs at you.

"hani's gonna just be like you when she grows up," you sigh, placing hani's clothes back in your drawer as jeonghan's chuckle gets closer to you before it's right on your back. jeonghan's pressed against you (still in his boxers, by the way) hands wrapped around your waist as he leans his head on your shoulder.

"what makes you say that, angel?" he questions innocently, and you chuckle, heart already warming at the thought of your daughter.

"hani pulls every piece of clothing she can pull off of her, and no matter how many times i put it back on, she's already taking them off again." you smile, closing the drawer as you put your hands on jeonghan's.

"she just gets hot." jeonghan says like it's the most normal thing in the world, and you scoff lightly, giggling as jeonghan kisses your shoulders sporadically.

"baby, when you get hot, do you take all of your clothes off?" you ask, and jeonghan gives you that signature laugh, humming for a while before he nods. "what do you think?"

"you're such a menace, jeonghan." you grumble to yourself, turning to face your sleeping daughter as jeonghan sighs, leaning his head on your shoulder once again.

"she's so pretty, isn't she?"

jeonghan's voice is soft and heartfelt, and you nod, eyes watering at the sight of your beautiful newborn. even though she's two months old, she already had your husband's nose and droopy eyes. he was feeling the surrealness of it all too, a sharp inhale telling all.

"she is. and she's ours, too. isn't that crazy?" you say after a moment of comfortable silence, and jeonghan nods, cold body feeling fresh and crisp on your back as he smiles against your skin, pressing another tiny kiss to your flushed skin. "insane."

of course the show that is fundamentally centered around two sisters and their tragedies becomes centered around men and said sisters are sidelined and their arcs are pushed to the sidelines and all the phenomenal care that went into their characters went down the drain. ​one’s arc is literally “the traumatized / mentally unwell character’s happy ending is committing suicide because they are simply too broken to heal and be happy” trope, and her mental instability is forgotten. the other is reduced to a mere plot device, has no agency of her own, and her trauma and anger is treated like a complete and utter joke for the sake of a shitty ship, and because the writers literally, point blank, were bored with her. it’s so sad because the tragedy of these sisters is so utterly devastating, so encompassing and so intricately woven into the narrative. but make it about two men i suppose?
