i just think people are purposefully obtuse when it comes to criston’s character. btw. like this there’s inherent tragedy with him. he’s given everything to house targaryen. before anyone asks, no i don’t care that he betrayed rhaenyra or whatever everyone loves to say. he loyally served and protected alicent and her children far longer than he protected rhaenyra. and i think that’s the tragedy of it all. he realizes, in real time, that he does not matter in this war. when dances fight above the warriors on the ground, they do not matter. this isn’t a war between kingdoms, it’s a war between a family, a family he has protected and served for years. he will die in this war. that’s the most haunting revelation of them all. he will die in a war that was created by the family he was sworn to protect and his death will have no meaning at all. that’s the most haunting revelation of them all.

something about tyrion lannister—the man who treats sex workers like property, fantasizes about raping and killing his sister, slaps his teenage lover for mocking him, makes his child bride undress and proceeds to grope her, strangles his lover to death for humiliating him, rapes multiple enslaved women (on his way to the literal breaker of chains)—being haunted by the question of “where do whores go?” is genuinely horrifying.

after a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse against women—particularly sex workers—now you want to know where whores go? now you’re finally starting to consider them beyond the context of sexual objectification? to understand what could have happened to tysha, tyrion has to understand a group of people who have never even been human to him (and still aren’t, considering that he rapes two enslaved women before asking them this question, though he doesn’t get an answer from either woman). even regarding tysha, tyrion only starts asking “where do whores go?” after finding out that she wasn’t a sex worker and therefore didn’t deserve to be gang raped. tyrion only recognizes her humanity when she’s once again defined as HIS wife.

tyrion will never know where whores go because he doesn’t deserve to. maybe he’ll find peace or maybe he won’t, but he’s never going to find tysha.

and yeah, tyrion’s misogyny and abusive behavior doesn’t exist in a vacuum. he’s a victim of sexual violence at the hands of his father. he resents women for the revulsion and mockery he sees in their eyes when they look at him. he treats sex workers like objects because they’re the only group of people that he can exercise control over. ALL of that is true. and he’s still never going to know where whores go.

the marketing team capitalizing on the divide between the fandom—via greens vs blacks—for season two is fascinating because it really did help. but it also completely overshadowed the themes of the dance, which was severely worsened by portraying as one faction being right. f&b was so compelling because it showed us what started the domino affect of house targaryen’s downfall and how it was ultimately for nothing. rhaenyra was not given divine approval or had some sacred bond with dragons, as the show has portrayed. the smallfolk turned against her, she lost everything, and she wasn’t even remembered as a legitimate ruler. not even by her own children. aegon, who did not initially even want the crown, lost everything and his bloodline ended. the blacks weren’t written as morally superior or just, and the greens weren’t written as an incompetent family who did not love each other. because their show counterparts were written like this, house of the dragon cannot exist as anything more than a wannabe fanfiction. the fandom is intolerable because there is such an extreme divide. you are either right, or you’re not. they act like they themselves exist in this media because the show prioritized glamorizing one faction and demonizing the other instead of properly examining how house targaryen doomed itself and how no one was justified. f&b explored the themes of an extremely powerful family that destroyed itself because of its belief it is superior to others and its lust for power. house of the dragon explores morally good vs evil and completely rewrites the framework of the story to support this extremely limiting narrative. oh, house of the dragon, you could have been something amazing
