After the hurricane recovery is starting in the states and the damage is so bad in some places, they're either gone or don't have a single road left into town.
The power outage map for the states affected is honestly astounding. I actually know friends in southwestern Ohio that had a tornado/cyclonic thunderstorm from this system knock their power out.
Tumblr media
Some places might not get power back for 2+ weeks.
The western half of North Carolina, where the Appalachian mountains are, is so badly damaged that some news stations are warning from any travel, and to consider every road closed until further notice.
Asherville is so damaged there seem to be almost no major roads left in or out of town.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The flooding from this storm is devastating and has destroyed entire towns and wiped some off the map. Damns and other infrastructure are failing all over the affected areas.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Until the flood waters recede sometime in the next few days, we won't have a full scope of just how badly people have been affected, nor will we have a final death toll.
Oh also, apparently the governor of Tennessee has not declared a state of emergency despite several places being catastrophically inundated. Instead he's done this, which is pissing a lot of people off.

Since the 1960s, the world has seen a spike in the number of natural disasters, largely due to rising sea levels and an ever gradually increasing global surface temperature.
The good news? We’re getting better at helping each other when disasters strike.
According to a recent study from Our World In Data, the global toll from natural disasters has dramatically dropped in the last century.
“Low-frequency, high-impact events such as earthquakes and tsunamis are not preventable, but such high losses of human life are,” wrote lead authors Hannah Ritchie and Pablo Rosado.
To conduct their research, Ritchie and Rosado gathered data from all geophysical, meteorological, and climate-related disasters since 1900. That includes earthquakes, volcanic activity, landslides, drought, wildfires, severe storms, and mass floods.
In the early-to-mid 20th century, the average annual death toll from disasters was very high, often climbing to over a million.
For example, the study cites that in 1931, 2.7 million people died from the Yangtze–Huai River floods. In 1943, 1.9 million died from the Bangladeshi famine of 1943. Even low-frequency events had extreme death tolls.
“In recent decades we have seen a substantial decline in deaths,” Ritchie and Rosado observed. “Even in peak years with high-impact events, the death toll has not exceeded 500,000 since the mid-1960s.”
Why has the global death toll from disasters dropped?
There are a number of factors at play in the improvement of disaster aid, but the leading component is that human beings are getting better at predicting and preparing for natural disasters.
“We know from historical data that the world has seen a significant reduction in disaster deaths through earlier prediction, more resilient infrastructure, emergency preparedness, and response systems,” Ritchie and Rosado explained in their study.
On April 6, [2024],a 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked the city of Hualien in Taiwan. Days later, as search and rescue continues, the death toll currently rests at 16.
Experts have praised Taiwan for their speedy response and recovery, and attributed the low death toll to the measures that Taiwan implemented after an earthquake of similar strength hit the city 25 years earlier. Sadly, on that day in 1999, 2,400 people died and 11,000 were injured.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Wang Yu — assistant professor at National Taiwan University — said that event, known as the Chi-Chi earthquake, revolutionized the way Taiwan approached natural disasters.
“There were lots of lessons we learned, including the improvement of building codes, understanding earthquake warning signs, the development and implementation of earthquake early warning (EEW) systems and earthquake education,” said Wang.
Those same sensors and monitoring systems allowed authorities to create “shakemaps” during Hualien’s latest earthquake, which helped them direct rescue teams to the regions that were hit the hardest.
This, in conjunction with stronger building codes, regular earthquake drills, and public education campaigns, played a huge role in reducing the number of deaths from the event.
And Taiwan’s safeguards on April 6 are just one example of recent measures against disasters. Similar models in strengthening prediction, preparedness, and recovery time have been employed around the world when it comes to rescuing victims of floods, wildfires, tornados, and so on.
What else can we learn from this study?
When concluding the findings from their study, Ritchie and Rosado emphasized the importance of increasing safety measures for everyone.
Currently, there is still a divide between populations with high gross national income and populations living in extreme poverty.
Even low-income countries that infrequently have natural disasters have a much higher death rate  because they are vulnerable to collapse, displacement, and disrepair.
“Those at low incomes are often the most vulnerable to disaster events; improving living standards, infrastructure, and response systems in these regions will be key to preventing deaths from natural disasters in the coming decades,” surmised Ritchie and Rosado.
“Overall development, poverty alleviation, and knowledge-sharing of how to increase resilience to natural disasters will therefore be key to reducing the toll of disasters in the decades to come."

The fandom god discussion is interesting, but I feel it’s sometimes hindered by an unwillingness to separate gods from mortal society, or even a sort of over-eagerness to project our own reality onto them, which simply doesn’t work. I've seen the gods referred to as rulers or tyrants demanding worship (which I kinda understand because it’s something Ludinus says in-game, though it’s funny to see fandom corners confidently repeat the inaccurate talking points of the antagonist) but more interestingly I've also seen them referred to as a higher/the highest social class, as colonizers imposing themselves on mortals, the raven queen specifically as new money. Overall these comparisons tend to talk about the gods and their actions regarding Aeor in the past and predathos/the Vanguard in the present less as if they're about saving their own lives and more as if they want to preserve their powerful position.
The gods, by their very nature, are above mortals. They cannot be compared to any mortal ruling class because they didn’t choose or strive for that power and cannot feasibly get rid of it/step down/redistribute it (nor do they actually in any sense rule; killing the raven queen, unlike killing an actual queen, will not end the 'tyranny' of death), they simply have it by virtue of being gods. Saying that’s unfair or unequal and that the gods should be killed because of it is akin to saying it’s unfair a mountain is bigger than you and demanding it be levelled, except the gods, unlike mountains, are living, feeling beings who shouldn’t have to die because some people can’t stand the idea of not always being top dog. Thing is, the gods themselves ultimately understood this power imballance and that they can't help but hurt Exandria the way humans can't help but step on bugs, and thus removed themselves from the equation by creating the divine gate. Saying this isn’t enough and that they're clinging to power is just demanding they line themselves up to be killed.
#critical role#cr3#downfall#nella talks cr#ultimately all these 'ruling class' comparisons are simply flawed and don’t work when under the slightest bit of scrutiny#gods arent rulers or tyrants bc they don’t rule and can't be deposed#they are representantations and guardians of (mostly natural) concepts#and those concepts won’t go away bc you killed the gods. death and nature and the fucking sun will still remain#they aren’t colonizers of mortals (wtf lmao) who demand they be worshiped and mortals live according to their oppressive rule#again did you watch calamity? not even before the divine gate did the gods demand worship or even respect#they were never less respected than during the age of arcanum and still they were just chilling#(until someone released the betrayers and they had to step in to stop the ultimate destruction of exandria)#technically you could argue they were colonizers against the titans but even that feels like a stretch#the titans to me feel less like people and more like representations of the chaotic and deathly side of nature#being angry they were killed sounds like being angry someone stopped a hurricane just bc the hurricane was there first#I'm sorry but that hurricane would've flattened you. it wouldn’t appreciate your support bc it isn't a person#and 'a higher social class' fucking NEW MONEY? this is just blatant projection#I'm sorry but not everything more powerful than you is a stand in for oppression#sometimes it’s a narrative stand in for nature and i promise nature isn't oppressing you

Unless you are sending a private plane and offering your home, stop telling Floridians or anyone else to pay attention or to evacuate etc. The vocal minority who talk about these hurricane and storms like they're nothing do it as a coping mechanism because the south has so little fucking control over how we're treated and what happens to us. Why don't you use that energy to speak to the motherfuckers still planning on going to their Tampa trip or actively whining inside fucking Disney World?
And where would Florida evacuate to? Popular evacuation spots for people who CAN EVEN BEGIN to afford it would be the Carolinas and Georgia. Guess what? Those are under fucking water where they aren't coast line because climate change and overdevelopment are so goddamn bad that a hurricane climbed the fucking Appalachian mountains. Currently there are trucks driving around projecting how dangerous this storm will be from speakers because so many people are still without power or cell signal from Helene. They can't even turn on the news to hear about this. What do you think this is?
The state government revels in death and suffering in these places often times (Gov Ron DeSantis is refusing to speak to the Biden administration about hurricane relief for what Helene did to Florida in fact) and offerings no recourse. The alleged "shuttles" and evacuation routes are just bus stops. They're just fucking bus stops on the already over crowded road.
It is SO CLEAR that your feigned concern is just another flavor of insisting that southern people and poor people (AND GOD ARE THERE A LOT WHO FIT BOTH) are big, dumb idiots who don't heed the warning before an act of God. Your chatter is USELESS. It's less than useless. It's downright harmful because it adds to the idea that we're all a bunch of goofs and we deserve ruin.
Milton is changing FAST and freaking out meteorologists and storm chasers because none of our weather models or measures of this kinda thing are designed for a Gulf of Mexico that is changing temperature at this rate. This is climate change. This is what is being DONE TO US by a capitalistic death cult that has slammed the door and turned the key and trapped all or us inside with it. Nation wide, yes, but also globally. Of course the south is feeling it first. We feel EVERYTHING first and every time y'all act like it's a moral failing on our part and clap when we suffer and die and then claim our mistrust of the government and of outsiders on both the left and the right must be because we're paranoid, inherently evil goons.
At a certain point, you have to accept that some people would rather die at home. Some people see how fucked they are and they'd rather die at home. Being away from Appalachia during all this is killing me. I'm breaking into pieces. Because I'm not just FROM there, I'm OF there, and I hate that I ever had to leave to try and prove I mattered and to pretend that the extreme poverty I was born into was something I could escape through college or relocating or a job, to try and swallow the lie that my family was poor and southern and cursed because they just didn't play the game.
Really and truly FUCK Y'ALL who say NOTHING and turn away from tragedy in the south- the lack of give a fuck about Helene right now on the "you HAVE to renlog this" self righteousness pestering website is DISGUSTING and shows so clearly what you are- except when you can chastise and give a fucking lecture and feel smart. FUCK YOU. This death cult we're in WILL get you too.
