AU where Light never picks up the notebook and goes on to join the NPA, eventually following in his father's footsteps as chief.
The first L has retired (which is a nice way of saying he's disappeared and no one can track him down), forcing his successor Near to take up the mantle.
Years later, the chief of the NPA is summoned by L to help track down a serial killer.

a death note soulmate AU would be so funny because imagine one of the rules of this 'verse is 'you cannot kill your soulmate or else you too will perish' because imagine light getting his soulmark at like 12, right....and then five years later when he's like desperately trying to figure out L's name he randomly glances down at his arm (he never rlly looks or thinks about his soulmate because to him it's just a name, it doesn't matter in the great grand scheme of things, he's too smart to believe in soulmates etc...) and he's just like FUCK
or it'd be funny if his soulmark appeared the day *after* Light goes on a rant to Ryuk about L, how he'll kill him, with his bare hands if he has to...like...I guess not!
oh and I would be in stitches if either Misa's soulmark was Light (bc unrequited soulmates exist, so she keeps trying to convince Light to show her his soulmark so she can kill L, so she can be his soulmate instead and Light's just like 'that won't work' without elaborating, or he convinces Misa that somehow her killing L would kill him, even though that's not remotely how it works. Light's just like well if I can't kill L, no one can!) or if her soulmark is, like, Kiyomi and so Misa spends the whole show convinced Kiyomi is the rightful Kira because of *course* her soulmate would be Kira
as for L, who's soulmark is Light of course, this is all the proof he needs that Light is Kira. after all, L understands his psychology quite well. Of course his soul would be destined to be entwined with another monster's, with a creature as deliriously cruel and clever and brilliant as Kira. L is actually quite pleased when he realizes Light is Kira. he's like at least my soulmate is someone *fun.* Beyond takes offense.

light isn’t sympathetic in the way a lot of villains are - he’s privileged and naive, actually, which is the point - but he’s still really sad to me. i find myself going over the first couple chapters and feeling bad for him a lot of the time. which is a bit of a mindfuck but also i think a horrible person being so so human and tragic while also having complete choice and choosing said tragedy is what makes him so damn intriguing for me.

I once put it as "Misa loved him like an idol and used him like a doll". He was her god, but one made of stone-to be loved, not to love, and to obey, not to listen to. She adored him in a way he didn't like but couldn't dispense with. Possibly a spicy take but I think that if he had loved her back or even treated her well she wouldn't have been so enamoured, because if he was proactive about their relationship at all she couldn't make him into her perfect object of worship. I think the difference between Light's manipulation and Misa's manipulation was that Light's was entirely realistic and Misa's was entirely delusional. Light needed the world to become what he imagined and Misa forced the world to make way for her imagination.
Light and misa's dynamic is so underanalyzed. People repeatedly ask "Did light ever love misa?" And invariably arrive at "no." This is accurate but tired. Insufficient. Boring. "Was there any love there" no. It's something much stranger and worse
