A Different Christmas Story

I'm sure, by now, you've heard the call for a Christmas story about a woman who leaves her bigoted husband in their small town and moves to the Big City and falls in love with her career. I have an outline.

Responsible Woman, taking care of the family business in Rural America, gets a call from her Rebellious Sister in the big city to come for a visit and do some shopping for Christmas. They can both go back home to celebrate with the family. RW thinks it's a great idea and she could use a change of scenery: she's known all the guys in town since kindergarten, there is no restaurant other than the diner where she knows everyone, she would really like to be anonymous for a week (recent break-up? resents having earned her degree (responsibly and economically) online instead of going away like RS? has never actually visited RS's city?) I'm working on motive, but shopping and visiting may be enough.

RW gets to take public transportation from airport to sister's small, shabby, but homey apartment. (I'm imagining Chicago). RW and RS spend the evening catching up, eating Chinese (which RW adores and didn't realize she missed since the Chinese family in town moved away), and watching some appropriately nostalgic TV (Saved By the Bell? Full House? Gilmore Girls? Appropriate for them to have watched it together as kids).

RW and RS head out to go shopping and eat out and watch a musical (RS's present to RW). Things are going great. RW is meeting RS's friends and finding them charming. They start shopping at the gift stores at all of the museums and warm up next to the tropical fish tower in the aquarium.

News of a flash storm - the day before their flight - lake-effect snow is predicted to be the "Storm of the Century". Flight is preemptively cancelled and Mom and Dad tell them to stay safe and off the roads (rural folks know to stay home in this kind of weather, "Don't Planes, Trains, and Automobiles it on our account!")

The sisters go out to get supplies for the storm: Christmasy foods, decorations, a small tree, and a stop to the bookstore in case they lose power. RS takes RW to the local LGBTQ bookstore. RW is okay with this, if a little confused. RS is talking to the person behind the counter while RW is looking at the rainbow Christmas decorations and cards. RS brings the store clerk to RW and introduces RW to Al, her non-binary partner. RS tells RW that she would like to invite Al to their Christmas since Al can't get to their family either. RW is floored, a little confused and a little hurt. Al leaves them to talk.

RW and RS have a talk - and RW is a little put out by not having been told and "what will Mom and Dad say?" RS and RW are fighting tears. Al, on the phone, is sounding slightly panicked. It becomes apparent that there is a person on the other end in the middle of a crisis. Al is trying to be calm and reassuring, but is glancing furtively at their partner and her sister and not feeling up to talking someone down from their own crisis. It is writ large on their face. The patrons of the store have all slowly become aware of this phone call.

A beautiful woman strides up to Al and says, "it's my turn." She takes the phone and begins speaking to the person in crisis. A few other patrons, knowing what is going on on the other end of the phone, line up to take turns talking to the person on the phone. RW hears what they are saying. She is listening to a community come together to save a stranger; a stranger who didn't know they had a community to turn to.

RW listens to the people on the phone as RS comforts Al, who is in tears. RW's heart grows three sizes. She asks the beautiful woman who went first what exactly is happening. RW is like the woman in Fahrenheit 451 who didn't understand the poem being read to her, but she's weeping anyway. The beautiful woman explains how everyone in that store had, at one time or another, been that person on the phone. The one who couldn't stand not being who they were. The one who couldn't face their family. The one who was afraid that they would lose everything and everyone because of who they were.

RW looks to her sister and Al with tears in her eyes.

Cut to rainbow Christmas dinner at the little apartment with not just Al, but several of the patrons from the bookstore.

Even as China’s ‘wolf warrior’ diplomats yesterday urged India to “immediately” correct its mistakes and disengage at the Line of Actual Control (LAC), reports have emerged on the Chinese garrison on Pangong Lake being further strengthened with new assault boats.

The world’s highest saltwater lake has already witnessed some intense action over the past few months as the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) continues to play dangerous war games in a highly volatile situation high in the Himalayas.

The Type-928D assault boats were, as reported by Naval News, first deployed to the lake in October 2019. But, based on satellite imagery analysis, they began appearing at the western end, nearer the de facto border around June this year. While it is being said that there are at least six assault boats present on the lake right now, the Indian intelligence agencies believe that the number could be easily around a dozen.

“Quite similar to the Swedish CB-90, the Type-928D is 13.8m (45 feet) long and has a beam of 3.9m (13 feet). Its three 295 hp motors give it a top speed of 38.9 knots. In the assault role it can carry up to 11 troops. They are primarily armed with a 12.7mm heavy machine gun mounted in a remote weapons station (RWS) above the cabin offering a wide arc of fire. Crew served machine guns can be mounted on the aft deck,” the report said.

These frontier patrol boats have been manufactured by Changzhou Special Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) Shipyard Company Limited in Changzhou, Jiangsu, China. The company has been assigned by General Headquarters of Equipment of Chinese People’s Liberation Army to make patrol boats.

The Chinese state-run media, constantly raising the war cry, has been working overtime to portray how the PLA is a far superior force and has been developing new equipment to use in all types of terrain.

“At Pangong Lake, which at an altitude of 4,250 meters, is divided between Southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region and India, the PLA has put a new patrol boat into use, made of non-metallic materials. The craft has a top speed of 40 kilometers per hour and can resist ice collisions,” the Beijing Evening News had reported a few months ago.

It also mentioned a type of heavy scout vehicle, called the “wild ox,” capable of accommodating 17 full-armed soldiers, being deployed to a border defense regiment in the border area in Southwest China’s Yunnan Province.

Cold-proof blankets, tents, snow camouflage suits and hot water bottles that can keep water hot for 24 hours have also been issued to soldiers at various fronts by the Chinese PLA.

The Indian Army, and the government, having learnt from its past experiences, is matching every move being made by the Chinese this time around. General Manoj Mukund Naravane, the chief of the Indian Army, is constantly reviewing the operational preparedness along the LAC as the winter sets in a few weeks from now.

While the Indian Navy has already sent steel boats to patrol Pangong Tso and match the vessels of the Chinese Army, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh informed Rajya Sabha members yesterday about special warm clothes, special tent for living and adequate arrangement of weapons and ammunition have been made for the soldiers to cope with the extreme weather conditions at the LAC.

“The spirits of our soldiers are high. They are capable of serving at forbidding altitudes with scarce oxygen and in extremely cold temperatures, something that they have effortlessly done over the last many years on Siachen, and Kargil. Our armed forces have also made appropriate counter deployments in these areas to ensure that India’s borders are fully protected,” the Minister apprised the House.

The Indian government, which has so far outplayed the Xi regime in its own game of Chinese Checkers, is in no mood to let the guard down, just like the soldiers at the border who won’t allow the Chinese to gain a foothold in the region this winter.

SATURDAY 27 May, 2017 I know it’s Saturday, all day! I know because the alarm doesn’t go off on Saturday or Sunday, just in case we plan to lie in.  No alarm this morning.  In fact I am so used to a 7.30 am alarm that I wake up then anyway when I have slept well which I usually do.

I have sorted out the Urgent, Important and As Soon As Convenient desk work.  I used to do as much as possible at weekends but now know that many people won’t look at emails till Monday at the earliest. And then they will deal with the most urgent first.  I know that’s what I do!  And I don’t imagine that my emails will often fall into the Most Urgent category!

This morning I have tidied my desk.  It had begun to resemble a stall at a Jumble Sale (and I know what I am talking about because I have a great deal of experience of Jumble Sales).

I was planning to say that the weather isn’t so good.  But it has improved (12.15 pm now) but not yet as warm as yesterday.

On Our way shopping at the beginning of the afternoon we saw that the monthly sale of a wide variety of merchandise had assembled on the North side of the Basin.  I spoke to Emily Abbott  who I have met before.  She runs a stall called “Hive & Keeper UK” i.e. BeeKeeper. She has a blog too >   

At a previous sale I had told her about my adventures with my father who was a dedicated  beekeeper and Secretary of the Sussex Beekeepers’ Association.

January in Pictures

JANUARY -- the first month of the year is already over. January month is not my most favorite. I like it for its promise of blank pages, fresh starts and new possibiliies. January, though, is dreary. It is still winter without the festivities. January this year was also stormy which pretty much made the bf and I stay home and enjoy many quiet evenings  by the fireplace and watching movies with our cat.

DATE NIGHTS

Rain and cold season sniffles kept us mostly at home this month.

NY Birthday Date Night.  We celebrated the bf’s birthday with his parents and friends on New Year’s Day. Our first date night of 2017. I wrote about it here.

Pizza Date Night. The bf caught a bad cold on the first Saturday of the year so we had to stay in and do a pizza date night.

Noodle Theory Date Night. Then it was my turn to catch a cold. (Thanks, bf!) We stayed in and ordered a delicious feasts of noodle dishes (Korean noodles, garlic noodles, samosas and dumplings) through Caviar from Noodle Theory.

The Habit Burger Date Night. Casual date night of yummy delicious burgers, tempura green beans fries and onion rings. My post right here.

Lucille’s BBQ: Double Date Night.  with the bf’s parents and we stuffed ourselves with Southern food like hushpuppies, fried green tomatoes, bbq ribs and fried shrimp and fries at Lucille’s, Here’s my post on Lucille’s from last year’s visit.

FAMILY 

The constant stormy weather prevented me from going to church and seeing my family afterwards for lunch. It is an hour (at 75-80 mi/hr -- I know I need to slow down but no worries I am a careful driver) drive that is not very safe when it is storming pretty hard.

Jollibee. My sister and bro-in-law treated me to lunch at Jollibee which is a Filipino fast food chain after church where I also ended up giving them their Christmas presents. We could not get it together his year to  have a family holiday meal. They convinced me to try the salisbury steak with rice and egg and it was delicious!

RAIN, RAIN 

I love rainy weather but I am starting to question if I love rain this much.  The weather made me crave and cook rainy day comfort eats such as congee and blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup. Yum!

SAN FRANCISCO RESTAURANT WEEK

Pecan Pie and Coffee.  My breakfast on the first day of 2017. I was in heaven! 

Tofu Pumpkin Curry at Cafe Asia.  A delightful  business lunch inside the Asian Art Museum in SF.

Salad. Despite these decadent eats, I have been eating salad almost every lunch time. I feel good when I do this.

Snacks. BFF @hungrygirlinsf    gave me all these goodies and treats including bean cakes, seaweed and chocolates (and a cute notebook and pen). I am spoiled by her. I also discovered the benefits of snacking in getting rid of that mid-afternoon slump.

WINC. My first wine home delivery from Winc.  A total impulse buy one afternoon when I was super-exhausted and staring at the computer. An ad popped-up. All it took was on click of a button. I do not even drink much wine anymore but I liked what I have tasted so far. 

I am thankful for the solitude that this month has brought. And as always counting my many blessings of my beautiful family, BFF and friends, for all the sumptuous feasts and a warm home that shields us from the rain and cold.
