Sadly, in the United States it's cheaper to take lives than to same lives.
For example...
‘No one should have to be fighting cancer and insurance at the same time’
And MAGA Republicans can hardly wait to make healthcare even more expensive and difficult than it is now...
Millions could lose health insurance to pay for Trump tax cuts
Yep, your healthcare benefits could go out the window so that MAGA Republicans can give MEGA tax breaks to overpaid insurance executives so the latter can then increase their campaign contributions to the GOP.

Was reading an article about how the hospital where I got top surgery has paused gender affirming care for minors and 18 year old adults, and the headline of the article was "It shouldn't be happening here," said by a doctor at the hospital.
I get why the doctor said that. I completely understand. This is a hospital in New York City. It has a robust trans healthcare program. But at the same time, if it shouldn't be happening here, where should it be happening? To whom? To the hicks down south? In red states?
I think a lot of people in blue states, including some trans people, think that all of the violent transphobia reigning down from this administration won't really affect them. They agree that it is bad, and they feel bad for the people it will happen to, but it's not for them. It's for the unlucky schmucks who are too stubborn or too poor or too culturally backward to move up north or out west. (That sentence was sarcastic, if it wasn't obvious.)
The thing, though, is that it is happening here. It is happening everywhere. Did you really think NYU Langone wasn't going to bend at the knee with their government funding threatened? Did you really think their administration gives a genuine flying fuck about trans youth? Trans 18 year olds? They don't. They will dismantle the entire gender affirming healthcare program if the government tells them to. It will be left to the patients and doctors to file lawsuits to try to get it back.
I don't really have a point here other than to implore people who grew up in blue states/liberal areas to realize that you are not divinely protected from anything, nor are trans/queer people in red states harboring some original sin that means their oppression is inevitable. I don't think many of you actually think this on a conscious level, but the "it shouldn't be happening here" clued me into what I think is going on more subconsciously pretty often.

People who get all up in arms about vaccination programs in the US because "it's un-American for the government to be involved in my healthcare" are just a special level of stupid.
I mean first of all government vaccine programs have been going on for decades, it's how we almost eradicated polio from the country and significantly brought down the rates of measles, not to mention y'know eradicating smallpox thanks to global vaccine cooperation.
But like, people don't realize just how many things they take for granted are the result of government intervention in healthcare. Obviously basic things like working sewage systems, sanitation departments, and the FDA are the first things that come up, but also....
Fluorinated tap water to make sure kids' teeth enamel forms completely
Iodized salt to reduce thyroid issues as a result of iodine deficiency
Fortified cereal, milk, and orange juice to combat vitamin and mineral deficiency
Don't have to worry about scurvy or iodine deficiency? Thank the government intervening in healthcare.
Don't have to worry about cholera, dysentery, or typhus? Thank the government intervening in healthcare.
Don't have to worry about wood shavings and chalk dust in your bread? Thank the government for intervening in healthcare.
The government has always been involved in your healthcare, you've just been taking it for granted.

and get your hands on a new one if it is!
i don’t know what might happen to federal/state narcan program funding in the next administration so if you’ve been considering, now is the time to pull the trigger

Read the Room:
Cleary every side of the argument gets the messaging wrong about what a good “economy” is, and I think we have to start with what actually means anything here. It’s a fair thing to say. And I don’t mean that anything Trump, or his gaggle of losers and liars, says is worth listening too; this is not a “both sides” thing. This is about using words that have real meaning and talking about (yikes!) “economic indicators” that people actually give a shit about, and talking about them in ways that have meaning to the public.
Rich people are only really able to talk about the Stock Market as the measure of success, and this is supposed to mean something to people who have (read: were forced by cheap employers in the1990s to shift away from pensions to) 401ks. The Stock Market game, including “shareholders”, is designed to move money into rich people’s pockets. The fact that some average Americans are able to benefit, sometimes extraordinarily, is yet another myth that perpetuates as false “American Dream.”
There’s no denying the economic recovery, and we could (maybe should) be talking about where the economy was going under Trump even before Covid. But while everything Biden did here was amazing, stupendous, outstanding, ultimately we didn’t see anything worthwhile for the average person. Not dying is not a measure of success for anyone who lived. We have to talk about measurable positive change that affects the Middle Class, and that was not done.
The simplest things would have better healthcare — everyone gets it, or there’s a viable, visible plan in place to deliver. Affordable housing — that would have been a game-changer. The minimum wage shooting up to $20/hour or better (while CEOs make 2500x the average person’s wages). A path to a viable Social Security system and lowering the working age, not raising it, as a result of actual taxes levied on the rich. Broader college loan forgiveness. A vocation program that paves the path for millions of new electricians, plumbers, engineers and nurses — we nearly killed off our nurses in 2020. Any and all of these things would have said “The Middle Class matters, and we are here for it.” And that didn’t happen.
I expect to get lambasted for saying all this. That’s fine. I’ll stand next to the election results from November, if anyone is looking for me. Biden did a phenomenal job, but the things that really matter to the average person are still dreams that everyone is dreaming and no one is making a reality. So instead, everyone is in survival mode and pissed as fuck. Read the room.
