There is no shame in changing behavior when presented with better information. If you stopped masking because you thought covid was over and now realize that wasn’t the case, it IS okay to pick the mask back up. Don’t double down on dangerous behavior for the sake of not admitting a wrong, it’s not worth your life.

Healthyhorns Staff Features: Sam Rodriguez
Tumblr media
Sam Rodriguez (she/her/hers) is the Bystander Intervention and BeVOCAL Program Coordinator at the Longhorn Wellness Center.
Sam joined the Healthyhorns team back in July of 2023, coming from the UT Austin Office of Admissions. Before working in admissions, Sam received a bachelor of science in psychology from The University of Central Florida and a master of science in curriculum and instruction from Florida International University. She then worked as a behavioral therapist for children with autism and various learning differences.
Before her time in Austin, Sam’s primary focus was creating a community for women of color and making the outdoors more inclusive and accessible. Sam served as a trip leader for Outdoor Adventure at UCF and led trips going caving, hiking, bioluminescent kayaking, surfing and more. Sam said she has always had a passion for learning and challenging her innate behaviors, beliefs and actions.
Sam said that her interactions with UT Admissions and prospective students fueled her passion for cultivating environments that prioritize both academic development and holistic personal growth. She said she was drawn to building support systems that address the unique challenges faced by students.
“I truly wanted to create a well-rounded educational experience that not only equips students with academic knowledge but also empowers them to thrive personally and culturally,” Sam said. “This passion led me to my place in the Longhorn Wellness Center promoting student well-being.”
Sam explained that bystander intervention and BeVOCAL are about creating communities where people look out for each other, and help change the campus culture.
“Initiatives such as BeVOCAL provide strategies to address these various forms of harm and cultivate a culture of care and responsibility,” Sam said. “Students need bystander intervention initiatives to prevent harm, promote safety, change social norms and build community.”
Sam said working with students is exciting and rewarding, and one of her favorite parts of her role at the Longhorn Wellness Center.
"Each and every student I work with brings a unique perspective and an overflowing amount of ambition to grow,” Sam said. “I personally love working within an educational system because of the robust mentorship opportunities and the ability to empower students to advocate for themselves, discover who they are and find that love for learning. I always like to remind my students, and students we come across through our work on campus, that they have the power to change ideas, cultures, practices, beliefs, laws, systems and institutions. They are deserving of love, celebration and inclusion.”
If you are interested in learning more about the Longhorn Wellness Center, bystander intervention and BeVOCAL, visit healthyhorns.utexas.edu/lwc or by stop by the office to visit in person. The space is home to a plethora of well-being resources and an open workspace.

Diabetes At 35: Know Diabetes. Fight Diabetes
Tumblr media
At 35, life is often at its peak - careers are thriving, families are growing, and adventures await. However, amidst this hustle and bustle, it's crucial to pay attention to our health. One such health concern that can sneak up on us, particularly at this age, is diabetes. In this blog, we'll delve into what diabetes at 35 entails, why it's important to be aware, and how to effectively combat it.
Diabetes: The Silent Intruder
At 35, life often feels like it's just beginning. However, this milestone also marks a crucial time to assess your health, especially concerning diabetes. Here's a breakdown of what you need to know:
Types of Diabetes: Understand the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, along with lesser-known types like gestational diabetes.
Risk Factors: Explore the various risk factors that predispose individuals to diabetes, including genetics, lifestyle choices, and medical history.
Symptoms: Recognizing the early signs of diabetes can empower you to take action before it escalates. Symptoms such as frequent urination, increased thirst, and unexplained weight loss should not be overlooked.
What are the differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes treatment options?
The differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes treatment options are as follows:
Type 1 Diabetes:
Treatment: Requires insulin replacement therapy as the pancreas does not produce insulin.
Management: Lifelong insulin therapy is essential for individuals with type 1 diabetes.
Complications: Without insulin, individuals with type 1 diabetes are at risk of developing life-threatening conditions like diabetic ketoacidosis.
Type 2 Diabetes:
Treatment: Can be managed with lifestyle changes, diet, weight loss, medications, and sometimes insulin.
Prevention: Lifestyle modifications can help prevent or reduce symptoms of type 2 diabetes.
Complications: Individuals with type 2 diabetes may develop hyperosmolar coma due to high blood sugar levels.
Key Differences:
Insulin Dependency: Type 1 diabetes requires insulin for survival, while type 2 diabetes may not initially need insulin.
Onset and Symptoms: Type 1 diabetes often presents in childhood or adolescence with sudden symptoms, while type 2 diabetes is more common in older adults and symptoms may be vague.
Risk Factors: Type 1 diabetes is primarily genetic, while type 2 diabetes is influenced by lifestyle factors like obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and diet.
It's crucial for individuals with either type of diabetes to closely follow up with healthcare providers to manage their condition effectively and prevent complications
What are the common symptoms of diabetes at 35?
Common symptoms of diabetes at 35 can include:
Increased thirst
Frequent urination
Increased hunger
Unintended weight loss
Fatigue
Blurred vision
Slow-healing sores
Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
Areas of darkened skin, usually in the armpits and neck
These symptoms may not always be noticeable until blood sugar levels are significantly high. It is essential to be aware of these signs and seek medical attention if you experience them, especially if you are 35 years old and at risk of diabetes. for a brighter, healthier future.
