The architecture of expressionism was one of Wolfgang Pehnt’s life themes: already in 1973 he published the first edition of his reference work „Die Architektur des Expressionismus“, a fundamental study of the origins and manifestations of expressionist tendencies in European architecture with an emphasis on the German developments. For a long time I had been searching for the last and significantly expanded edition from 1998, published by Hatje Cantz, and a while ago I finally found a copy in the right condition. In contrast to earlier editions the present one is larger in size and also includes a number of stunning color photographs that perfectly suit the colors of some of expressionism’s most significant buildings. Beyond this the strength of the book not only is Pehnt’s lucid writing but also his ability to tie together the different strands of expressionism. Pehnt leads the reader along the precursors Antoni Gaudí, the Prague Cubists and also the German Monumentalism of the turn of the century towards the German key expressionists Hans Poelzig, Bruno and Max Taut and the „Gläserne Kette“ architects. In individual chapters Pehnt introduces important members like the Brothers Luckhardt, Hans Scharoun or Hermann Finsterlin whose utopian architectural visions evidence the polyphony of expressionism.

The other end of the spectrum represents the Northern German Expressionism: while the metropolitan exponents around Bruno Taut and Walter Gropius dreamt up a messianic communism, protagonists like Fritz Höger and Bernhard Hötger indulged in Germanic mythology and the brick as representative of the German temper. So, it is not surprising that both later associated themselves with the Nazis.

In terms of European expressionism Pehnt primarily focuses on Amsterdam School and its exponents Michel de Klerk and Piet Kramer but also sheds light on the anthroposophical architecture by Rudolf Steiner in Switzerland. In so doing Pehnt shows the varied forms and ideas behind expressionist architecture and demonstrates that based on very different starting points at least partially congruent architectural expression was able to emerge. A fascinating and insightful read!

No muchas películas pueden decir que han tenido el honor de contar con un campeón olímpico entre su elenco: Greg Louganis, cuya vida ha sido retratada en el telefilme "Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story" (1997), que ya ha sido reseñado en este blog. En una historia que se desdobla entre el pasado y el presente, su rol es el del entrenador de un equipo local de natación en el que participa uno de los protagonistas.

Una exposición de arte es el marco que nos presenta a Daniel Wheeler (Ian Rhodes) en conflicto con su novio, Allan (Edward Finlay), porque no ha podido olvidar al chico que le ofreció la primera bocanada de pasión juvenil.

Durante la adolescencia que compartieron, ambos vivieron un tiempo en la misma casa (la de Danny) debido a que Stephen (Jeffrey Lee Woods), el padre de Carter (Kyle Clare), debe enfrentar un tratamiento para su alcoholismo. Son días ajetreados para el prometedor muchacho, pues está en preparación de una carrera que le puede ayudar en su futuro profesional, pero los problemas familiares y de salud lo llevan a recurrir a drogas.

Danny también tiene sus conflictos, aunque proviene de una familia más amorosa. Vive con su madre viuda, Miriam (Casey Kramer), y es un prodigio de la pintura, en la cual recibe la valoración de su educadora, Madame Martin (Karen Black). Vale añadir que, justamente, el título original de la película ("Acuarelas") juega con ambas pasiones. Gay de clóset, aunque su homosexualidad es un secreto a voces, su relación amorosa con Carter es consentida, pero, por pedido expreso de éste, debe permanecer oculta en el colegio para no recibir los ataques de Henry (Brandon Lybrand), amigo y compañero de prácticas.

David Oliveras es el autor de un proyecto modesto, pero de gran poder emocional. Es cierto que parece una historia contada una y mil veces: la de dos seres contrapuestos que acaban conformándose en una pareja tan improbable como tenaz. Sin embargo, estamos ante un proyecto interesante en el que imperan la ternura y el dramatismo.

El Malleus Maleficarum (del latín: Martillo de las Brujas; en alemán: Der Hexenhammer) es un tratado sobre la brujería escrito por los monjes dominicos Heinrich Kramer y Jacob Sprenger y publicado en Estrasburgo en 1487. Tras su primera publicación, fue reeditado docenas de veces, se difundió por Europa y tuvo un profundo impacto en los juicios contra las brujas en el continente durante 200 años aproximadamente. Esta obra es notoria por su uso en el período de la histeria por la caza de brujas, que alcanzó su máxima expresión desde mediados del siglo xvi hasta mediados del XVII.

Según el Malleus Maleficarum toda la brujería proviene del apetito carnal que en las mujeres es insaciable. La superstición se encuentra ante todo en las mujeres, y la mayor cantidad de los brujos son del entonces entendido como "sexo frágil" porque las mujeres son "más crédulas, más propensas a la maliginidad y embusteras por naturaleza". El pecado que nació de la mujer destruye el alma al despojarla de la gracia, y todos los reinos del mundo han sido derribados por mujeres. Existen tres vicios generales que tienen un especial dominio entre las mujeres malvadas: la infidelidad, la ambición y la lujuria.
