Cine: Watercolors (2008)

No muchas películas pueden decir que han tenido el honor de contar con un campeón olímpico entre su elenco: Greg Louganis, cuya vida ha sido retratada en el telefilme "Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story" (1997), que ya ha sido reseñado en este blog. En una historia que se desdobla entre el pasado y el presente, su rol es el del entrenador de un equipo local de natación en el que participa uno de los protagonistas.

Una exposición de arte es el marco que nos presenta a Daniel Wheeler (Ian Rhodes) en conflicto con su novio, Allan (Edward Finlay), porque no ha podido olvidar al chico que le ofreció la primera bocanada de pasión juvenil.

Durante la adolescencia que compartieron, ambos vivieron un tiempo en la misma casa (la de Danny) debido a que Stephen (Jeffrey Lee Woods), el padre de Carter (Kyle Clare), debe enfrentar un tratamiento para su alcoholismo. Son días ajetreados para el prometedor muchacho, pues está en preparación de una carrera que le puede ayudar en su futuro profesional, pero los problemas familiares y de salud lo llevan a recurrir a drogas.

Danny también tiene sus conflictos, aunque proviene de una familia más amorosa. Vive con su madre viuda, Miriam (Casey Kramer), y es un prodigio de la pintura, en la cual recibe la valoración de su educadora, Madame Martin (Karen Black). Vale añadir que, justamente, el título original de la película ("Acuarelas") juega con ambas pasiones. Gay de clóset, aunque su homosexualidad es un secreto a voces, su relación amorosa con Carter es consentida, pero, por pedido expreso de éste, debe permanecer oculta en el colegio para no recibir los ataques de Henry (Brandon Lybrand), amigo y compañero de prácticas.

David Oliveras es el autor de un proyecto modesto, pero de gran poder emocional. Es cierto que parece una historia contada una y mil veces: la de dos seres contrapuestos que acaban conformándose en una pareja tan improbable como tenaz. Sin embargo, estamos ante un proyecto interesante en el que imperan la ternura y el dramatismo.

Part 1 of 3 – An Irish Tragedy 80 Years Ago, Today – (Tue) Feb 23rd, 1943: Folks, today is nothing short of a massacre. There are so many ships sunk, it will require a break down for EACH Convoy. This will be the first of three posts. Leading off, we will cover the loss of two ships. One, a neutral ship caught in the crossfire, and another running in a small coastal convoy. The tiny, and very neutral, 700-ton Irish steamer “Kyleclare” is homeward bound from neutral Portugal. Her next port of call is Fishguard, Wales. U-456, a Type VIIC, closes in. 240 miles southeast of the Irish Coast, a spread of torpedoes races towards the little ship. Two strike home, and Kyleclare disintegrates in the explosions, gone in an instant. U-456 investigates the debris field, but the ship is gone. ...so is her entire crew. There are No Survivors, and 18 Irish seamen are vaporized with their ship in the fog of war. Meanwhile, in the Mediterranean, another attack plays out. 5 and half miles off Djinet, Algeria, U-371, also a VIIC, stalks the tiny, three ship coastal convoy “Roplsey.” A single torpedo sinks the British steamer “SS Fintra,” with nine dead and 26 Survivors. This is just the beginning. Across the Atlantic, two Convoys are about to be massacred.
