RobMoro TV | Sløtface - 'Cowboys In The Dark' + 'Indoor Kid'
Norweigan outfit Sløtface have bestowed upon us two brand-new singles from their latest EP, along with the surprise gift of videos for the tracks. Taken from their new “AWAKE/ASLEEP” EP, the songs are part of the new look Sløtface since both Lasse and Tor-Arne departed to pursue passions beyond music. Having undergone these amicable decisions, the band have dared to develop further, musically,…

Haley Blais' 'Wisecrack' searches for culmination in a changing world
Written by Shea Roney
“Can I be responsible for things that I did years ago? / I guess it could be good for just a laugh,” sings Haley Blais on the song, “Coolest fucking bitch in town.” It’s never easy to put into words the feeling you get from the soft limbo of adulthood. It can become something of the existential sort, but Blais finds a much easier approach when you can laugh about it regardless of how objectionable your childhood may have been. On her new album, Wisecrack, Vancouver singer/songwriter Haley Blais walks down the infamous memory lane, less to elucidate nostalgia, but more searching for a reason to grow up.
“I’d kill to be a sensitive person” is what Blais opens the album with. It comes from the song “Soft Spot for Monarchs,” that kicks off as a folk pop tune but soon melts into an absorbing collage of sound. Like our own memories do as we grow older, the accent of cymbal crashes, pitching saxophones and abundance of vocal recordings begin to clash with each other, each a singular piece fighting for its fleeting existence.
Wisecrack, as a whole, sees the growth of Blais, both as a storyteller and a sonic composer. Coming off of her 2020 debut, Below the Salt, we find Blais in an expansion into grander territory. Before then, she was known for both her ukulele covers on YouTube as well as a decade-long career of singing classical opera. Below the Salt was an album of lively bedroom pop songs. But focusing on some heavier topics, Wisecrack sees Blais maturing. Covering topics of aging, burdensome self doubt, and the conundrum of morality, Blais takes these eleven songs to try and find some sort of culmination in her changing world.
In a real cheeky and raw approach to storytelling, Blais masters irony on the most delicate subjects. On the lead single, “Coolest fucking bitch in town,” she sings, “I want my therapist to think I’m cool,” a song in which Blais sings about playing into the charade of being okay, when in fact she is pushing down feelings of doubt and insecurities. The explicit confidence is there, but can it be manifested into existence? Or is it about embracing who you are — no matter how “uncool” you may feel? On the track “Matchmaker,” a gentle groove about relationship pressures, Blais sings, “Then I’ll be the bitch who ruined your family line.” Opening up about societal expectations in a soft and catchy pop melody seems to take off some of the heat.
Looking backwards seems to be imperative on Wisecrack. Recounting the memories that stuck with her as she developed with them, Blais looks to learn understanding and moderation. Reminiscent of the time spent mourning the death of the family dog, the track “Survivor's Guilt” pulls out these early painful acknowledgments of mortality. “Can’t a girl mourn the death of her dog in the back of a theater in peace anymore?” Blais asks, in a way that is as sarcastic as it is disheartening. One of the album’s highlights, “Baby Teeth,” is a pivotal moment of the album that comes towards the end. Blais opens up about a sentimentality for simpler times — or perhaps a fear of getting older. “I want my baby teeth back,” Blais sings on the chorus, ending with “I wanna know what it’s like / Pull out my front one on my own time.” With a rejuvenating chorus that lays back until it needs to climax, Blais mourns for having to grow up too fast.
With attention to dynamics and textures, Wisecrack is as unexpected as it is comforting. With songs like “The Cabin,” dynamics are front of mind when ripping guitar and pounding drums swerve in and out of controlled punctuations. “The Cabin” portrays stories of sweaty summers spent at a Cabin where Blais rode speed boats, conducted summer romances, and was given her first sip of beer. “A beer soaked memory - who gave me beer in seventh grade?” she sings in retrospect. “Winner” is a slow burner that holds up the melody. It eventually turns into an insanely gritty guitar solo blanketed by Blais’ distorted scream. With slight minor intonations, the song opens up to a possibility of emotions.
The album comes to its conclusion with “Beginner’s Guide to Birdwatching.” In a sense, this song is Blais’s acceptance of what is to come in the future. Beginning as a choral arrangement of vocals all souped up with autotune, the track fades into the demo phone recording that it started as, capturing the raw moment when Blais sang, “One minute she wasn’t there / Then the next minute there she was” to her newborn niece. Accompanied by her brother, sister-in-law, and other friends gathered, the song boasts sincerity. The track fades as the sound of bird songs enters the scene. But in the midst of the blissful noise, a single fly can be heard buzzing around, showcasing an incredible theme: life’s imperfections live hand in hand with its beauty.
Wisecrack releases next Friday, September 15, on all streaming platforms. You can pre-save the album HERE, place your pre-order HERE, and if you’d like a glimpse of Haley Blais’ world, be sure to follow her to keep up with all things Wisecrack. Blais is also on tour – if you’d like to catch her in your city, check out the list of remaining dates HERE.

Acne Scar Cream - Fade Away Acne Scars
Acne scars are the result of inflammation caused by clogged pores and sebum (oil) overproduction, leading to breakouts. While many superficial acne breakouts heal without leaving a mark, some more severe ones do leave noticeable red or dark marks behind. It's important to avoid picking at pimples because doing so can cause more injury and potentially lead to more permanent scarring. Instead, dermatologists recommend using products that help to fade discoloration and smooth the skin.
Luckily, there's a bevy of gels, creams and treatments that can bring blemish-induced discoloration down. "I usually like fading products that have vitamin C or alpha hydroxy acid, which are both great for brightening and smoothing," says Dr. Jennifer T. Haley, a board-certified dermatologist in Arizona. She also suggests incorporating products that contain retinoids or peptides, which are both known for helping to rebuild collagen and fade discoloration, into your daily routine.
One of the best over-the-counter treatments for fading discoloration caused by breakouts is this one from DERMA E, which contains panthenol, or pro-Vitamin B5, which helps to resurface and reduce the appearance of scars. The product also contains ceramides and niacinamide, which help to restore the skin's natural barrier and reduce inflammation and redness, respectively.
Another dermatologist favorite is this retinol serum from La Roche-Posay, which has the hero ingredient adapalene, a retinoid for acne that's now available over-the-counter and works similarly to prescription Differin. It's also formulated with licorice root extract, which brightens and improves the skin's overall appearance. "Adapalene is a wonderful treatment for acne, but it's also great at smoothing rough texture and discoloration from old breakouts," says dermatologist Dan Belkin.
Other over-the-counter treatments for smoothing rough, textured skin that's prone to acne scar cream are these from CeraVe. It contains ceramides and niacinamide, both of which help to repair the skin's barrier, but it also has shea butter, which is very soothing for the skin. The formula is gentle enough to use on all skin types, including sensitive.
For a cream with a more powerful concentration of the hero ingredient, check out this one from Mederma. The peptide-infused gel not only helps to smooth skin texture and fade discoloration, but it also contains caffeine to help with cellular respiration and boost the skin's metabolism.
While it's a good idea to incorporate some of these products into your daily routine, it's always best to talk to your dermatologist about any serious scarring or skin issues you may be experiencing. Your doctor will be able to prescribe or recommend the right products for you, and give you tips on how to get the most out of your over-the-counter regimen. And as always, don't forget to wear sunscreen daily! It's a must for all types of skin, but especially for those with darker or more severe skin tone. It will prevent any new pigmentation from developing from sun exposure and protect you from further skin damage and premature aging. And who doesn't want that?
Our Acne Doctor Australia doctors can prescribe medications your family doctor (GP) can’t prescribe. These special medications are the most effective in clearing stubborn acne. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One
[3 stars]
While this boasts some of the biggest and most unrelenting action of the MI franchise it also, surprisingly, has the second weakest script of the series so far (only topped by MI 2). And I say “surprisingly” because it was another co-written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie (Top Gun: Maverick).
This latest installment… or should I say down-payment given the nature of the two-part tale… isn’t bad. In fact it has a thrill a minute and was quite prescient about the world. It was already in the can just months ahead of ChatGPT becoming the seismic market and political hot potato that continues to rock the world. In fact, it would have preceded it if it had hit theaters as planned before the pandemic. However, that also means they spend a great deal of time explaining things that, now, everyone knows and thinks they understand. It makes the movie a bit exposition heavy, to be sure.
But all that aside, the truth is that MI has been getting steadily darker for the last few movies. Much like Bond, the man at the center of the stories is getting worn down and losing those around him. The humor has drained out of the stories and the reality of the fight has taken over, for better and worse. It has made the stories more realistic, but it has also leeched out much of the respite and joy that made them triumphant at the end. It is feeling a lot more like No Time to Die than, say, Octopussy.
Some of the humor gap was due to the lack of screen time for Simon Pegg (Luck) and Ving Rhames (Wendell & Wild), who have both been support, brains, and comic relief for the series. Rebecca Ferguson (Silo) had more humor, or at least light-hearted interaction with Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick) than either of the two making for an odd rhythm. And Haley Atwell (Christopher Robin), who finally got the spy-ish role she has deserved, likewise carried that aspect of the story.
The women, interestingly, are the real center of movie, holding it all up. Even Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Thunder Force), with a smaller role, added significantly to that aspect.
But our big bads were an odd mix. Esai Morales was very effective as the cold representative of destruction. But Vanessa Kirby ( Hobbs & Shaw) reprising her role was a bit more confused and unfocused. Perhaps we’ll get more in part 2 of the story to understand her conflicts? And even the “good” side of the equation, read Cruises’ own folks, were less than crisp in their actions and motivations. Shea Whigham (Vice) clearly has a personal beef that isn’t yet revealed. And Cary Elwes (We Don’t Belong Here) was, well almost laughable in his role as Director. How much of this came down to late editing of stories versus just weak directing on McQuarrie’s part is hard to pull apart, but some of it lands at his feet to be sure.
Ultimately, this is a great ride with a lot of open questions and wounds to be resolved in the second film. Did it need to be two films? Probably not. One 3 hour installment probably could have done it by trimming several of the many, many, many chase scenes and several discussions. But I am willing to reassess when I see the true ending of a clever saga. So do see this if you like the MI universe, but know that you’re not going to feel sated at the end, only primed for the next sitting.
