Are the Hamishes Based on Book Characters? (HTTYD)
Tumblr media
(Special shout-out to @yv-sketches and the link to this particular fanart here. I'll never stop looking at their book drawings, they're so good!)
Well met, my fellow Dragonmarkers! Here's another article for Character Comparison series, where I try to find a plausible, even possible, comparison between show and book characters of HTTYD.
Today, we'll be diving into the Hamishes. Very well-timed, considering what I had found recently.
Shout-out to @noctusfury and his article on the Hamishes and the Mystery of the Missing Portrait(s). Very good read.
Now, for those of you who haven't watched DreamWorks Dragons, or have forgotten who these two are, they are two of several Chieftains of Berk that is seen in the Riders of Berk episode "Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man".
Tumblr media
The portrait below is supposed to be that of the two Hamishes.
Tumblr media
It must be said, of course, that there is some debate about that due to an apparent error that was made during production and that the portrait of the 1st chieftain and his son (the top left in beginning picture) was the real Hamishes, design-wise.
You'll have to read the post in the link above, since that gets into greater detail.
However, we're not here for that. We're here for who the Hamishes are and who are their closest comparison, in MY opinion.
Hamish the First was Berk's most successful and wealthiest chieftain, having been a raider and pirate and accumulated for himself a massive hoard of treasure. We can assume that his rule was a successful one based on the only description we have of this historic figure.
His son, Hamish the Second, was a Hiccup, in reality, and, after his father's death, and, presumedly after he was coronated as the new chief, he built a labyrinth of traps and riddles to protect his father's treasure, hoping that his successor, a future Hiccup, would be able to find it.
It must be noted that this young man was a rather masterful riddler and engineer — to the point that NOBODY was able to even FIND the labyrinth, much less REACH the treasure. He was also assumed to have been a friend of dragons, since it would've been impossible to build it without their help. Plus, he also knew dragon characteristics and intentionally built the labyrinth to be impossible to navigate without a dragon (you most certainly wouldn't have survived the fall without one).
Now, it is my belief that the two Hamishes — and this is rather obvious given their backstories — are based on Grimbeard the Ghastly and his son, Hiccup the Second.
Like Father, Like Son
When you think of it, everything fits — albeit, with SOME differences.
For instance, they were kings (Hiccup a prince), while the Hamishes were just chieftains — that we know of, anyway, from their VERY SPARCE backstory (come on, DreamWorks, get it together!). Hamish the First died before his son, while Grimbeard lived sometime after Hiccup (for certain - ahem! - reasons). Hamish the First had a successful reign as Chief while Grimbeard's rule as King ended literally in flames due to his crappy parenting. Hamish the Second was the one who hid his father's treasure, when in the books, Grimbeard hid his own treasure for his future Heir to find. Hamish the Second was also a genius engineer/architect, while Hiccup the Second was not, though both were excellent riddlers and writers.
And, while not proven, it is assumed that Hamish the Second wasn't your typical Viking, while Hiccup the Second, despite being a Runt, was your Viking's Viking, but with brains, beauty, and brawn (if yv-sketches' sketches are to be believed lol 😂).
That being said, there were several similarities.
1) Both Hamish the First and Grimbeard had successful reigns for the most part and were best known for their pirating and attaining massive wealth.
2) Both fathers had Runts for sons, but loved them dearly (probably at the expense of their thrones).
3) Both leaders had treasures that Vikings, greedy to acquire the hoard for themselves, tried to find but failed and even lost their lives over it. In fact, in both instances, the true locations of the hoards were hard to find in hard-to-reach places, were booby-trapped, and had dragon guardians watching over it.
4) Both Hamish the Second and Grimbeard had a LOVE for booby traps and hard riddles.
5) In both the show and in the books, it's shown how both Stoicks were greedy for the treasure, but later realize that their greatest treasure was their sons (Hiccup the Third).
6) Both pairs were Berkians and Hooligans.
7) Both Grimbeard and Hamish the First felt confined on Berk and preferred going to other places.
8) Both sons had a great love and loyalty for their fathers, and both, respectively, have shown that through their actions.
9) Both sons have had an ambiguous imprint on history that can't immediately be seen at first glance.
10) Both sons loved dragons very much.
11) Both likely met fatal ends due to schemes for the throne and the treasure. (There is no portrait of Hamish the Second and his son, so it's possible that, like Hiccup the Second, Hamish the Second could've either lost his life or was exiled because of the dragons he was friends with or simply due to the schemes of those who wanted the treasure and throne of Berk.)
12) While the TV show would've never had this in their content for viewer reasons, it would be interesting if both Hamish II and Hiccup II shared similar childhoods of being abandoned and then taken care of by dragons, only to be reunited by their fathers later.
13) Both pairs were likely succeeded after their deaths-cum-disappearances by their respective Chuckleheads as Chieftains of Berk, respectively.
Tumblr media
The Viking portrait on the right kinda looks like Chucklehead, doesn't it? 👀
Okey-dokey, I think that's everything. Interesting how I had a point for every Wilderwest King in the books. There are 13 points for 13 kings.
Tumblr media
Anywho, that's all for this article.
What do you guys think? Let me know if you have anything to add that I missed or needs correction.
Thank you so much for reading and for your support. It's been VERY fun writing these posts for you guys! 😁
Have a wonderful week!
Long Live the Wilderwest!

Oooh boy arcane s2 act II keeps giving me ideas. But you don’t need to have watched it to understand this au :)
I think I’m gonna call it the ‘Beast from Beyond the Grave’ au (Bfbtg for short). Everything happens as normal in canon, httyd 2 happens, Stoick dies, Hiccup becomes chief. However, a mysterious someone found the body of the renowned ‘Stoick the Vast,’ and uses some unconventional means to bring him back. (Vander from arcane tehehehe)
Stoick is still in there, but he’s usually overpowered by the more animalistic nature that comes with being turned into whatever the fuck he is. He’s quite violent and aggressive, but for some reason has never laid a claw on Hiccup.

So my brother and I have a sort of HTTYD World War II AU (it’s mainly our original characters, but Hiccup, Tuffnut, and Skulder are in there), and I just had to share a snippet we came up with tonight; we made the comment of how Hiccup and the Joneses wouldn’t smoke, but Stoick would, and Gobber? Well, he’d smoke like a fiend! He’d never be seen without a cigarette in his mouth:
Hiccup one day (sometime after the war ended), staring at Gobber:
Gobber: “What?”
Hiccup: “… how do you still have teeth? And lungs?”
Gobber: “Smokin’s good for the lungs! You know what I say: a pack a day keeps the doctor away!”
Hiccup, scoffing: “More like a pack a day calls the doctor…”
Gobber: “Oh, you’ve been spending too much time around those Jones boys.”
Stoick: “Their uncle was always the same way. Why, in the Great War-“
Hiccup, softly: “World War I…”
Stoick: “GREAT WAR, we were in the trenches one day, and every time I broke out a smoke, I’d feel his eyes on me. And sure enough, I look over and there he is. Staring at me, and I say ah! What’s it to you? And he says ‘you keep smoking them and it ain’t gonna be Germans that kill ya.’ So I told him it’s gonna be ripe old age! You know what he did? *clutches his chest and gasps* and then says ‘gonna be them smokes!”

Watching Riders of Berk EP. 8 "Portrait of Hiccup as a buff man" and I noticed something.
⚠️Note: I am aware the real life reason is likely that at the time the show was cheaper and with it only being season 1 they were more geared towards just putting characters through fun adventures and less about filling in the movie 1 & 2 time gap with lore like Race to the Edge was⚠️ but I'm autistic and it's my special interest so I like to have fun.
In the movie, Hiccup says 7 generations have lived on Berk, but including Hiccup & Stoicks, there are only 6 portraits of leaders and their heirs.
Also, obviously the portrait before hiccup & stoick is stoick & his father, but the portrait before THAT one is the Hamishes, implying either Hamish II is Stoicks father, there is a missing generational portrait, or there was possibly a change of which house had leadership in between Hamish II and Stoicks father.
I don't think there would be a missing portion solely on the basis of it seeming to be a very important tradition so I highly doubt a chief would skip out on it.
I also don't think Hamish II is Stoicks father, given that 1. Stoick looks like a carbon copy of his own father, a large, ginger man. And Hamish II does not look like that, both in the fact he is blond like Hamish I, but also that Hamish II was a hiccup, and we see that while yes, Hiccup certainly fills out with some muscle and such, but not to Stoick and therefore Stoicks fathers broadness. 2. At no point does Hiccup acknowledge the Hamishes as family despite the chiefdom in Berk being handed down to the child of the chief, and refers to him as Hamish, whereas if Hamish II was Stoicks father, he would likely call him Grandpa, even if he'd never met the man
Combine all this with the fact that Fishlegs makes a comment about Hiccup being "one of the few who wasn't killed by their successor" which implies that most (granted, again, only 6 portraits on the wall so idk what truly constituents "most" and "few" in this scenario) of the heirs kill the chief before them.
Therefore I've come to the theory that the Haddock family only recently came into power of the chiefdom when Stoicks father challenged and killed Hamish II, this also explains how there have been 7 generations (including Hiccup) while only having 6 portraits, Hamish II never got a portrait with his heir as he likely never had one/was killed before a portrait was painted and the cheifdom was lost.
And this will probably be a part of my personal canon for HTTYD forever now, let me know what you think 👍

RIDERS OF BERK | HTTYD SERIES | A CLOSING
Hey guys! Sorry for the week long hiatus, I had so many unexpected events to deal w that no time could be had for updating this blog.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ me the whole week tbh ANYWAYS! I do think that we can announce the winners of Part I and Part II of the Polls! [Unless something changes in 4 hours and a day! HAHA! Which, might be safe to say it wont.]
AND THE WINNERS ARE...
RIDERS OF BERK POLL (1) - Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man
RIDERS OF BERK POLL (2) - When Lightning Strikes
Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man was a landslide win. I mean, I get why. It showcased that tender relationship between Stoick and Hiccup, it played w Hiccup's confidence and identity and realising the gifts that make him different is what makes him great. And Stoick also learning to put aside his traditional prejudices to appreciate Hiccup's uniqueness.
Tumblr media
When Lightning Strikes was another strong win. It dealt w the village's strong impudent views, Hiccup's resolve to save Toothless, Stoick finally standing up for Toothless and Hiccup. Though, Thawfest and Breakneck Bog tally slightly behind with an almost equal number of votes.
Tumblr media
The thing these 4 episodes have in common is that it deals w intricacies of family ties and relationships. Hiccup and Stoick, Hiccup and his mother, Hiccup and Toothless, Spitelout and Snotlout. They play around w the theme of togetherness and acceptance. To live and let live. And I get why that hits.
Admittedly, I thought that Animal House and How to Pick Your Dragon would garner more votes for the 1st round of Polls. Those were my honourable mentions for 1st round but I get why Heather Report came in second. It was the fire test of Hiccup and Astrid's relationship and much more.
And for the 2nd round of Polls I was banking on Thawfest to win. Haha! Regardless, I am just so glad that many of you took part in these polls and have continued reading and sharing my work.
If you guys are new to the blog and want to read up on all my reviews, you can find them all here:
Episode 1: How to Start a Dragon Academy
Episode 2: Viking for Hire
Episode 3: Animal House Episode 4: Terrible Twos Episodes 5 & 6 : In Dragons we Trusts | Alvin and the Outcasts Episode 7: How to Pick Your Dragon
Episode 8: Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man
Episode 9: Dragon Flower
Episodes 10 & 11: Heather Report
Episode 12: Thawfest
Episode 13: When Lightning Strikes

Just thought of the best idea for a Luther and Sloane reunion (in an alternate season 4 where the cleanse never happens, thought I’d talk to you about it because I have so much inside)
Sloane shows up and doesn’t remember anything but slowly regains her memory
the other brellies are aware that Sloane is back but are nervous to tell Luther
Luther can tell everyone is hiding something from him imagine like
Luther: what’s going on?
Everyone: nothing 😬
Luther then sees Sloane and is absolutely speechless
Remember that scene from How to Train Your Dragon 2 when Stoick reunited with Valka? Imagine it like that with Luther giving the piece de resistance after Sloane’s monologue
"You are just as beautiful as the day I lost you,” and they kiss (Klaus getting emotional for extra points)
Sloane immediately gets acquainted with Claire, Grace II, and the twins and immediately becomes the favorite aunt
And it ends with Sloane and Luther getting married again with Sloane pregnant (because 😍) happily ever after
awwww thats such a cute idea! i love httyd (lmao it was one of my first fandoms) and i think thats such a good comparison like they so would be grossly tender with each other.
im a little confused on the canonical want of luther/sloane since s3 kind of sets them up as a couple who dont want kids - luther mentions buying a house and a dog and growing old together but never mentions kids, viktor talks about luther marrying his dolls but never playing family with kids etc. sloane seems far more interested in travel than kids too. but then s4 has luther say that he and sloane would have liked to have what diego and lila have, so.. idk do they want to be childless or were they just too early (it was like.. 5 days) in their relationship to think about having kids at all.
personally i would love to see more kids of the 43 bc cute and more niblings/cousins for the rest

Hey, don’t know if you’re still talking about it, but I was thinking about Grimmel (HTTYD) and Scarlet Witch (Multiverse of Madness). The main reason I bring up both these characters is that they are supposed to be intimidating but really aren’t. I think the reason for this is that the writers try way to hard to make them cool and menacing. To give an anime example of how to do this well is the fight between Enkidu and Chaldea in Fate Babylonia. The fact that they are able to land a few hits but lose in the end make him come across as even more menacing, cause it shows not just power but durability as well.
Yeah, Grimmel was never going to be anywhere near as intimidating as Drago, who left a trail of blinded and mangled dragons in his wake and who killed the Bewilderbeast and also Hiccup's dad. It could have been done, but not with Dreamworks firmly convinced that HTTYD II would have made more money if Dean hadn't gone dark and Stoick hadn't died.
Because we don't see flashbacks of Grimmel killing Night Furies or Night Fury skulls on his hovermobile, all we're left with is Discount Snow Miser being wrong about things for an hour and 44 minutes.
