125 Years Ago: Newsies Go On Strike

On July 18, 1899 the newsies of Long Island City, Queens tipped over a Evening Journal distribution wagon in protest against the continued wartime price of 60 cents per hundred newspapers. The price change had been implemented during the Spanish-American War of the year before to profit off of increased wartime sales. But now that the war was over, the newsies wanted price to be returned to it's prewar 50 cents per hundred. On July 19, three hundred newsies met in City Hall Park and pledged to strike against the New York World and the Evening Journal.

Over the next two weeks, the strike would not only spread to all five boroughs, but to the newsies of a number of cities and towns across the northeast, all refusing to sell the World and the Journal. [source]

The strike would end with a compromise; the World and Journal would keep the price of their papers at 60 cents, but any unsold papers could be bought back. This compromise was accepted on August 2.

Should Strike and Gortash have a child? Absolutely fucking not. But would they somehow acquire a child (read they probably killed the kid's parents) and decide to raise it with love just to spite their everyone else around them and prove them wrong to show they could be good parents? Yes. Would they be good at it? Probably not. But I could easily see them doing this. Especially with the context you gave to Gortash's backstory.

I thought about this question a lot, anon. Wanted to write a whole essay again about why I think Gortash would actually be a horrible father if he had somehow acquired a child of his own and that child turned out to be in any way more normal than Enver was as one. Strike, who is the one of the two who actually likes kids, gets hives thinking about being a father himself; he has had a child before and i'm going to be sfw here and say the kid did not survive exactly long after birth.

didn’t give much context before but we’re going with that the egg was abandoned in winter horns and recovered by a group of waddle explorers

there wasn’t a lot of (known) writing on dedede’s species so figuring out what to do from there was kinda hard and they didn’t really know anything for certain, but between a little research, a gut feeling, and dedede and mk already used to Parenting, they passed the egg onto them to look after and well. yeah

it was definitely a rollercoaster for dedede, to be given hope that there were others like him after all - so it was only natural he’d take it very seriously. he spends a lot of time with them and they’re very clingy because of it. he says they’re like a duckling

being so big also comes with problems because as clingy as they are, they outgrew being able to be held by other people pretty fast lol
