;; I Wanna Be Yours 500 Follower Celebration
Summary: You can't handle being just friends with your childhood friend, Brandon Hagel, anymore. Word Count: 1k+
Secrets I have held in my heart are harder to hide than I thought.
Growing up in Morinville, Alberta, where the population was less than 10,000, there was one thing for certain: you knew everyone and everyone knew you. The kids you met on the first day of Kindergarten were the same you graduated with at eighteen. Some would stay and work in Morinville, maybe even marry their high school sweetheart, while others would move to Calgary or Edmonton to go to school. But in Morinville, there was one exception, your best friend: Brandon Hagel.
You had met him in grade school, his family having moved from Saskatoon. You had been too young to remember why or even ask, but the moment he walked into the classroom, and your teacher seated him at the desk beside you, the two of you were best friends. You swapped lunches, and played together at recess. Play dates were often scheduled by your parents, and you even played on the same Timbits hockey team until his skills surpassed your own and you were left to watch him play from the stands.
You were his biggest fan, even as he moved through different leagues, and it became more difficult for you to attend. The WHL, AHL and finally the NHL you had been there for it all one way or another. Watching the game streams on sketchy websites, late night phone calls, traveling to watch him play when he was close enough to home. You did it all, and it didn't go unrecognized. By those who didn't know you, and didn't know your story, you were often mistaken as his girlfriend.
It was something you just shrugged off, and assured those who were embarrassed for making such a statement that it was an honest mistake.
What they didn't know was how desperately you wanted that to be true.
You wanted to be his.
But after what felt like a lifetime together, you were convinced that would never be a reality. Not even as you sat on a beach in Tampa, Florida with Brandon sitting at a table with his teammates behind you.
You had flown down to watch their Stanley Cup Final match against the Colorado Avalanche. You had booked enough time off to be able to enjoy the parade, but it was an event that never came. The Bolts had lost, but you never passed up on the opportunity to enjoy a vacation.
You could hear the guys laughing behind you as you sat in the warmth of the sun. Cirelli had been trying to do some sort of party trick with a Corona and had ultimately failed, sending the table into laughter. Brandon's was the most prominent among them, the sound filling your belly with warmth. You loved his laugh, and the smile that you were sure was spread so fully over his lips. Just the thought of it had you smiling too, but it quickly faded when you heard a soft feminine voice speaking to Brandon.
It wasn't one you recognized, so you perked up in your seat and pretended to stretch as you glanced back at the table. The girl was pretty, and wasn't one of the wives or girlfriends that you had met during your trip. Your smile faded, and your stomach sank in an instant.
You had no right to be jealous. You weren't his girlfriend, he wasn't your boyfriend. He was allowed to flirt with whoever he pleased, and you envied the woman for the courage she had to walk up to an attractive stranger at the beach. It was the courage you wished you had yourself but knew it would never come.
Your shoulders slouched as you sunk back into your seat, a single hand reached up to pull the brim of your sun hat low in an attempt to hide the disappointed look you were sure had overtaken your features. But it was too late, someone had already noticed.
“Hey, is everything okay?” It was the voice of Cirelli's girlfriend that drew your eyes up. She sat in the chair next to you, her body sprawled out and a book in hand. She must have looked up from the pages just long enough to see that something was wrong.
You wished she hadn't.
“Yeah, it's just-” you cut yourself off with an uneven breath, “I'm not feeling well I think I'm going to go back to the hotel.”
“Oh, okay-” was all you could hear leaving her lips. A disappointed sigh as you reached down for your beach bag, pulled on your cover up and left your seat on the beach.
You wasted no time with goodbyes. Brandon wouldn't miss you. Hell, he probably wouldn't even notice you were gone. And if he did, Cirelli's girl could tell him where you went.
Your strides were quick as you moved through the sand and up to the boardwalk where you stopped just long enough to throw your shoes down on the ground. You stepped into them and quickly fell into stride again. You moved through the busy boardwalk with your head down, tears burning at your eyes but you didn't let them spill. Each steady breath you took fought them back, but only fueled the turmoil of frustration in your mind.
You hated that you felt this way. He was your best friend, your longest friend. You should have been happy with how things were. Yet, you wanted more. You would always want more-
There was a thunder of footsteps on the boardwalk behind you. Distant at first. So far you barely heard them but they grew louder, instructing your thoughts and clouding your mind. Your first instinct was to step to the side, out of the way of any jogger or playful child that may have been in your wake. But then you heard your name, a desperate call to get your attention, and you froze.
You would recognize the voice anywhere.
“Brandon?”
He stilled in front of you, his hand reaching up to slick back his shaggy hair that had fallen into his eyes. His breathing was uneven as he recovered from his sprint, and his dark eyes were fixated on you. His stare was magnetic, holding you in place without having to touch you. And you hated it. The hold he had on you, and it left tears to build in your eyes.
And he noticed.
“Hey,” he spoke softly, “ what's wrong?”
“I'm sorry,” your croaked, your weak voice betraying you so quickly, “I just can't be here. I need to go home-”
“Go home?” Brabdon asked.
His face contorted with confusion as he took a small step in and reached out to take hold of your arm. His hand was warm against your skin, sending a fluttering feeling through your body in an instant.
“What are you talking about? You're supposed to be here for another week.”
You wanted to shrug it off. To play it off as nothing, but there was too much you needed to get off your chest. There was no use in keeping secrets anymore. Not when they made you feel the way you did.
“I want to be yours, Brandon,” your words felt like a pathetic plea as they left your lips, “and I can't keep pretending that I don't. You're my best friend, but it hurts too much to just sit back and-”
Brandon didn't let you finish. He didn't have to. His hand  left your arm, his fingers grazing up slowly until you felt the warmth of his palm spread over your cheek. He cupped your face gently and used that hold to draw you in. And he kissed you, so deeply, so feverishly that it left you breathless. And in that moment you knew he felt the same way too. He, like you, had been too scared to ruin the friendship you both treasured so dearly.

The Stikini [Native American mythology; Seminole/Passamaquoddy mythology]
Owls inspire a certain sense of awe with their highly efficient nocturnal hunts, so it comes as no surprise that they have a role in some myths and folktales from around the world. In the religion of the Native American Muscogee and Seminole peoples, a Stikini was a malicious owl-like monster. The Muscogee people had a special dance called the StikinobAnga to ward off the evil Stikini, but they could also be fought with special ‘Stikini arrows’ which were equipped with owl feathers and featured grooves filled with medicinal herbs. Stikini used to be humans in life, but are now undead owl-creatures due to dabbling in witchcraft. I noticed they are sometimes translated as ‘witches’.
I found very few Native American descriptions of the exact nature and appearance of these monsters, but McElroy’s encyclopedia claims that the Stikini look like regular people during the day. When night falls, they vomit out their own entrails before hanging them in trees and transforming into horrible owl monsters. They then set out to hunt, and exclusively eat still-beating human hearts. If they ever go a full night without consuming at least one heart, they die. At dawn, they ingest their entrails to transform back into humans.
An often-cited interview with Lucinda Davis, a former slave from a Muscogee owner, claimed that the Native American Muscogee people associated owls with death and often perceived the birds as deathly omens. Whenever someone heard the noises of a screech owl, it was thought that somebody among them would soon perish. Supposedly, these owls could often be heard during funerals.
The Stikini is related to this belief, and the word ‘Stikini’ was also used to refer to screech owls.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, it is believed that African folklore influenced the Muscogee story of the Stikini. The Passamaquoddy people, too, knew a version of this creature that they called the Chebelakw (or Cipelahq). And old Passamaquoddy song describes how the monster, along with the spirits of the land and the water would cease their doings to listen to the sound of the singer’s drum.
The powerful wind spirit k’Cheebellock is also related to this creature: he has long legs, mighty wings, and a head but no body. In one Passamaquoddy story, k’Cheebellock takes a liking to two young girls who were taking a walk. He grabs them and lifts them high into the air to carry them to his world, which is a strange place even above the sky. But the girls soon became homesick and cried to be returned to their world. Eventually, k’Cheebellock gave in and took the two back to the world below. But the forest where he landed was vast, and his wings were too large to reach the ground through the thick canopy. So he left the girls on a hemlock. The girls noticed Leux, a local folk character, and begged him to help them. He replied that he was far too busy and left them to their fates.
Later, though, Leux came by once more and the girls called out to him again. Leux agreed to help them down, but on the condition that one of the girls would become his wife. But the girls were clever and tied a hairband to the tree. Once back on solid ground, they demanded that Leux took the hair band back if one of them was to marry him. He tried, but the girls had tied a very tight knot so it took him a long time to collect the hair band.
When at last he climbed down from the tree, the girls had finished their preparations and blinded him. They then called out to him to follow them, and so tricked him to walk right into a river. After climbing back on dry land, Leux heared the voices of the girls again and follows them, only to step on a trap made of porcupine quills. He then tried to rest, but when he awoke he found that the girls were nowhere to be found.

IDC: And I've been trying to catch this little firefly for years, haven't I, California? You picked the wrong time to make new friends.

New York: Maybe shut up now.
California: Yeah, maybe don't-
Florida: We were just talking here. Yeah, Cali told us you're a psychotic, megalomaniacal asshole. His word's not mine. Hell bent, on domination and pain.

can you write a lil blurb about throwing yourself into some of the draft boys arms like im talking legs around waist clinging to them
maybe after the draft or maybe the reader wins a game or skth
Tumblr media
You hadn’t seen your boyfriend since he went to play juniors two hours away from you, and now it was the night he would get drafted into the NHL. You talked to his parents about you going there and they were on board for the surprise. Throughout the day you texted Brayden like you were still in Saskatoon, talking about how much you missed each other and how you’d be watching the draft from where you were, little did he know that was in the building. You watched the draft start from the box where you would meet Brayden with his family once he got through the standard draft stuff.
As the draft started you watched many players get drafted, seeing Brayden sitting there still getting passed.
“C’mon someone take him,” you said to yourself. It was roughly halfway through the first round, and Pittsburgh was up, you sat anxiously hoping this would be the one.
“The Pittsburgh Penguins are proud to select Brayden Yager.” You cheered at the top of your lungs from the box you were waiting in. You wanted to rush down there so badly to see him but you had to wait. You jumped around the box cheering as he approached the stage. You sent him a message so he wouldn’t be suspicious.
I’m so proud of you Bray
You knew there was no way he would respond he was way too busy, but you received a text from his mom saying they were on their way up. You continued to watch the draft as more and more picks went by.
“Y/N so good to see you,” you heard a voice behind you say, you turned around to see the Yager family entering the box, and you jumped up to greet all of them with hugs.
“It’s so great to see you guys,” you smiled. The Yagers had become your second family, even while Brayden was playing juniors you spent a lot of time at their house. You continued watching the draft as the plan was put in place, you would be hiding behind the wall of his family in the arena seats, and they would reveal you after he got to everyone. You waited in the seat when you heard cheers, you knew your boyfriend had arrived. You stood up and made your way closer to the cluster, standing on the stairs in the box. You sat back down as you heard his footsteps getting closer. He looked down the row to see you sitting there. His face was priceless, he was so surprised and overwhelmed. You stood up and ran to him, jumping into his arms and clinging tightly to him. He kept you off the ground, allowing you to cling even tighter, as you wrapped your legs around his waist he smiled up at you.
“Y/N, what are you doing here?” he said still surprised.
“I had to see you,” you smiled. He pulled your head down to his, meeting his lips with yours. Your lips broke apart as you played with the bit of hair sticking out of the back of his hat.
“It’s been too long since that,” he said putting you down.
“I know,” you two moved into the arena seats and sat down. He wrapped his arm around you pulling you close.
“So what do you think?” he said looking down at his jersey, then back up at you.
“The black and gold looks good on you, but then again anything looks good on you,” you said.
“How’d I get such a perfect girl,” he kissed your cheek.
“I don’t know, how’d I get such a perfect guy,” you kissed his cheek. You two sat there smiling at each other for a moment.
“I missed you so much y/n/n,” he said taking his hat off and ruffling his hair.
“I missed you more Bray,” he looked offended by that comment.
“Not possible,” he said arguing.
“You can ask your parents, they know,” you laughed.
“You can ask them too, you realize they are my parents,” he laughed harder.
“I’m not making sense am I?”
“Nope, but it’s okay, I’m just too happy to see you again,” he said moving his hand up from your shoulder to your cheek. He gently brushed his thumb across it, then moved his hand to your hair, pulling your face to his once more. Your lips met once again and it was even sweeter than before. As you pulled apart for air, you both could feel your smiles through closed eyes. You both opened them at the same time and saw your smiles.
“I love you so much Brayden,”
“I love you too Y/N.”

5/10/24.
I'm going to guess that The Garrys don't sound like any other band ever to come out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They sound like a combination of 60s girl band with surf music. In fact, in the Bandcamp notes for "Get Thee to a Nunnery", their style is described as a combination of "The Ventures, the drama of Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti westerns, the dreamy psychedelia of Kurt Vile, France Gall’s brand of mod-pop cheek, and the lo-fi garage noir of Los Saicos."
I would add Electrelane and Barbara Manning to that description.
The Garrys are made of up of the three Maier sisters and they have releases going back to 2015. They have a new single, "Cakewalk" which may signal a new release in the future.
"Get Thee to a Nunnery" and many of their other releases are through Saskatoon label Grey Records (the label has also released work from Shirley & The Pyramids).

Joni Mitchell "Harlem In Havana" Taming The Tiger, September 29, 1998.
“The highlight of the summer, when I was growing up in Saskatoon, Canada, was the week the fair came to town. At the end of the mile long midway, there were two adult, Vegas-style shows - Club Lido and Harlem In Havana. Parents seemed to be scared by Harlem In Havana. Don’t let me catch you there! Every kid I knew got that instruction. Every hour or so (if you wanted to), you could hear the barker shouting through the roar of the crowds and rides, ‘Step right up folks - it’s Harlem In Havana time!’ When I heard this, I’d go running - to see the band file out - horns in hand - and seat themselves behind the blue and silver music stands. They’d begin to play this brassy, stripper groove - so slow and humid. Then, out came the girls - black girls - some chewing gum - and they’d begin to move - slowly - flipping their capes open and closed to the beat - like they had done a million times - a tired, bored tease.” —Joni Mitchell "Artist's Choice"

"GIRLS HOLD UP TESSIER HOTEL MAN," Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. July 10, 1933. Page 3. ---- Norman Oglestone Is Victim of Amazons Close to Perdue --- MANHANDLED AND ROBBED OF MONEY === 35-YEAR-OLD BACHELOR SO TERRIFIED HE FORGETS TO TAKE CAR NUMBER ==== Special to The Star-Phoenix TESSIER, Sask., July 10. - Still uneasy over his terrifying experience, Norman Oglestone, 35-year-old Tessier business man, at present manager of the Lakeview Hotel here, told the police this morning that he was held up by three unarmed young women near Perdue at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon and robbed of his money and some valuables. The trio, aged about 20, 22 and 28, and one of them mannish and ferocious in appearance, so impressed Oglestone that he did not stop to report the crime at Perdue.
LEAVE IN CAR Oglestone had been visiting Perdue and was on his return to Tessier when he met up with the amazons. Four miles east of Perdue the girls signalled to him to stop, ostensibly to inquire how far it was to Perdue. Immediately his Chevrolet coach drew to a stop one of the trio jumped in. All three became unduly familiar. One tugged at Oglestone's suspenders, a second attempted to pull off his shirt, and the third helped herself to his money, a few dollars. Just how much money was taken could not be ascertained this morning. The valuables included a pair of silver sleeve bands. Oglestone was permitted to retain the watch. When they were finished with Oglestone, the women entered a coach and drove away west. Their victim was so frightened that he forgot to take the license number of their car.
Oglestone is about 35 years of age and unmarried.

my favourite documentary is found on netflix which is about 3 chinese girls who were adopted by american families during china's one child policy exploring the circumstances around their adoption (it sounds grim but it's actually very beautiful and powerful!). the most important documentary ive ever seen is two worlds colliding which is available online for free here and is about the saskatoon freezing deaths, where police murdered indigenous men by intentionally stranding them in freezing temperatures, and the social factors that led to those murders that persist in police departments and canadian communities

the choir as fruits bc they're all fruity
ocean: THIS GIRL HAS BIG WATERMELON ENERGY I CANNOT EXPLAIN IT. i think it's bc it's flavourful, sure, but isn't *too* sweet and pairs well with sourness. she's got offputting parts to her (the seeds) that some people may hate her for while not recognising the rest of her greatness and being able to bear it.
constance: saskatoon berry. so i found this on a list of berries on wikipedia and i thought it was perfect even though i've never eaten it, sue me. there's the basic, "her-whole-theme-is-about-loving-where-she's-from-and-her-life-being-inherently-important-despite-never-being-widely-acknowledged-by-the-world" comparison here!!! they also have a sweet, nutty taste which i think goes with constance's hidden depth and complexity as well as her family's cafe.
noel: passionfruit... for obvious reasons... got a bit of a kick to him, and has a variety of colours from different parts of the rainbow ;). the purple concealing the orange inside is a metaphor for the halloween costume subtext scene. also he has a similar type of "seeds" to ocean but people in their lives generally tend to stomach these negative aspects from him than they do her.
mischa: grape. first piece of evidence, that's the fruit wine comes from and mischa loves alcohol. second, grapes (i'm particularly thinking red grapes here) have a skin and then somewhat differently coloured, softer innards. this is mischa. he has the stronger, more "masculine" (deeper colour) outside, but a more vulnerable inside. also most of the grape is its internal part, showing how his "passion" far outweighs his "rage".
ricky: strawberry bc, okay, i have nO idea why this is *my* experience of strawberries, but the ones i get are always more sour than i traditionally associate with it and isn't that *exactly* ricky??? not that he's "sour", but ocean calls him "sweet ricky potts" (while she's infantilising him) and is then surprised by how sexual he his ("monkey love drop" and all of sabm).
penny: lemon because she has the vibes of someone who will just... eat a whole lemon. while she cares, she can be very off-putting to those who don't know her as a result of her overbearing nature. also, jane doe is a faint imitation of penny, barely a trace of her living self, as is the experience with lemon into lemonade (ie australian lemonade which is essentially sprite).
