Astronomers have observed a dying star engulfing a planet for the first time. It’s something that’s likely to happen to Earth in a few billion years.

While the precursors and after-effects of stars engulfing planets have been observed before, this is the first time a star’s been caught sucking in a planet that strayed too close.

This happens when Sun-like stars get old, expanding in size until they’ve engulfed planets in their star systems.

It’s estimated to only happen a few times a year in the Milky Way, making it a difficult to observe.

The researchers who have just published their observation in Nature,  first spotted the evidence of planetary engulfment in May 2020, when they saw a bright flash on a star 12,000 light-years away, in the Aquila constellation.

They were looking for flashes from stellar binaries with data from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF).

Binary star systems occasionally get brighter, as mass from one star is pulled into the other.

“One night, I noticed a star that brightened by a factor of 100 over the course of a week, out of nowhere,” says lead author Dr Kishalay De, a researcher at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US.

“It was unlike any stellar outburst I had seen in my life.”

When he cross-referenced this data against observations from the Keck Observatory in Hawaii, De couldn’t find any of the tell-tale chemical signatures that binary eruptions normally give off.

Next, the researchers looked at infrared data from the Palomar Observatory.

“That infrared data made me fall off my chair,” says De.

“The source was insanely bright in the near-infrared.”

This could have indicated that the flash was a red nova – an explosion from two merging stars.

But data from NASA’s infrared space telescope, NEOWISE, showed that the explosion was too small – about one thousandth the size of even a small stellar merger.

“That means that whatever merged with the star has to be 1,000 times smaller than any other star we’ve seen,” says De.

“And it’s a happy coincidence that the mass of Jupiter is about 1/1,000 the mass of the sun. That’s when we realized: This was a planet, crashing into its star.”

The researchers believe that the planet was between about one and 10 times the mass of Jupiter.

The initial flash from the planet’s engulfment lasted 10 days, followed by 100 days of a bright infrared emission caused by the engulfing star ejecting material.

“I think there’s something pretty remarkable about these results that speaks to the transience of our existence,” says co-author Dr Ryan Lau, an astronomer at the US National Science Foundation’s NOIRLab.

“After the billions of years that span the lifetime of our Solar System, our own end stages will likely conclude in a final flash that lasts only a few months.”

I feel like 2nd house overlays can make you overly forgiving towards the person with planets in your 2nd house. It’s a Venusian house and that can bring a sort of desire to see the best in that person (7th can have this effect to a lesser degree imo bc Libra is focused on balance, so there’s affection there but it’s less likely to skew into being overly forgiving)

Chiron in the first can be a very beautiful person when they’ve really healed their wounds. A person who has a sort of glow from their inner light.

Earth moons in general like to receive and give gifts and Capricorn moons tend to be hyper fixated on giving the right gifts to the people they’re close to

Sagittarius's and Gemini's Exaltation and Fall

I've noticed there isn't a lot of information online about how/why Sagittarius is exalted in the south node and fall in the north node and for Gemini vice versa. There can be some debate about this in certain practices.

South Node Exalted in Sagittarius: Sagittarius is famous for ideas around wisdom and philosophy which may at first seem more compatible with the North Node. However Sagittarius's zealous nature can root them in a stagnant comfort that doesn't want to challenge their beliefs. Their pride, selfishness, and potential limited experiences can hold them back in growth. The South Node is all about what we are comfortable with and this can encompass strengths and weaknesses. The South Node is comfortable in one's self and morals which is a great power for any individual. While the South Node is all about what we may need to leave behind, about our karma, Sagittarius's natural curiosity and depth allows the South Node to shine in terms of survival and being. There can be contentment, natural worth, and meaning in understanding and embracing the past or what is.

North Node Fall in Sagittarius: The NN in Sagittarius can feel overwhelmed in their quest for greater knowledge and purpose. Overconfidence in themselves or beliefs may cause frustration when confronted with uncomfortable growth or challenges. Based on my experiences, take them with a grain of salt

People rag on Leo suns but some of the sweetest people I’ve known have been Leos. The most warm in a subtle way have been Leo suns with earth placements. If you need someone to root for you no one believes in you like a Leo, it’s a feeling like a warm glow in the dark.

Aquarius suns think unconventionally in a conventional way. Like they will come up with creative ideas that still are still under a conformist umbrella. If something is trending they want to be at the head of that trend. Aquarius moons have the real out there, out of the box ideas. Sometimes they won’t be grounded enough to make them work but Aquarius moons will really make you think differently.

Sagittarius and Geminis tend to set the trends first, can’t explain why but their energy and clever ideas tend to be infectious. Pisces are also really good at this with their dreamy energy, less intentionally though. Virgos will also find very clever ways to use the tools at their disposal.

The main characters of 2025 are Pisces, Aries, Virgo, Cancer, Gemini. This is because of some major astrological shifts happening. Sun, moon, rising, and Venus.

There’s going to be a lot of push and pull energy for Pisces and Aries placements. The north node is going into Pisces and Neptune is going into Aries. Saturn will be going into Aries briefly before retrograding back into Pisces for the rest of 2025. Eclipse season will be highlighting for Pisces and Aries placements.

The south node is entering Virgo.

Jupiter will be in Gemini for half the year before going into Cancer (it’s exalted here).

Uranus will be entering Gemini.
