The high fences of the camp held 1,500 Dakota people in squalid lodges, overcrowding, starving under demoralizing conditions. 90 percent of whom were women and children interred against their will under deadly armed guard.

Uncertain of their fate and mourning the loss of many who died on their way to the prison camp or during their time there because of deplorable conditions.

The Dakota suffered a horrific experience, living in constant fear at the mercy of a government that had not previously shown good faith and, who had in fact created the conditions of starvation and corruption for the Dakota people which inevitably led to conflict.

In a mass government ethnic cleansing most of them would be banished altogether from Minnesota, their homeland, the following spring, with many more dying in the process of their removal.

Think I used to get bogged down in “do I forgive this person” “do I even out the scales” “should I stand my ground” but really the question I should be asking is “what would be better for me” bc really. What would be better for me in the long term. What would stay true to my self respect and boundaries and values? What would provide the best outcome? What would make the most of our time? Sometimes that’s forgiveness and sometimes it’s not and I don’t think either route is necessarily morally superior to the other so long as it minimizes harm and is fair while also prioritizing your happiness
