Jon Kent (pretty much) Complete Reading Order
Compiled first for my personal use and tidied up for @jonkentweek ! Goes up to June 2024 and includes every appearance of this character that I could find. I used ComicVine's archive to track these down, which is both fallible and constantly being updated, so there might be some mistakes. Also, I did my best to highlight the occasions where Jon was a significant character in a story and to skip the ones that were just a non-speaking, one-panel cameo, but those were personal judgements and your mileage might vary.
Color key (and apologies for the eye strain): Red are issues in which Jon is a central character, not just a cameo, Blue are crossover events, Orange are stories that take place in alternate universes/are non canonical
Optional stuff you can read for historical context:
Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? (1997) a classic possible future story, which is, to my knowledge, the 1st time a character named Jon who is Superman’s kid appears
Son of Superman (1999) a self-contained, now AU, story about a teen Jon Kent, very classic 90s young adult comic with all the tropes that come with that, but enjoyable as the proto-iteration of Jon as an idea
Canon appearances start here
The Final Days of Superman crossover event: Superman (2011) 51-52, Batman/Superman (2013) 31-32, Action Comics (2011) 51-52, Superman/Wonder Woman (2013) 28-29 (This is the origin story of the Clark, Lois and Jon that the comics follow in Rebirth. Largely ignored by writers, as it was written to patch up New52 weirdness, but there are occasional references that might be confusing if you skip it completely.)
Convergence (2015) 5, 8
Superman: Lois and Clark (2015) 1-8 (Establishes Jon and his family in the DCU)
Superman (2016) 1-11, 13, 17-28, 30, 32-36, 38, 40-45, Special 1
Action Comics (2016) 957-972, 974-978, 980-983, 985, 987, 989-1000, 1002, 1005, 1016, 1022-1035, 1042, 1045-1048, 1050-1057, 1059-1060, Special 1, Annual 2023
Justice League (2016) 3-6, 15, 18-19, 22, 28
Trinity (2016) 1-6, 16
Super Sons (2017) 1-16
Dark Nights: Metal (2017) 3, 6

DC Nation Presents Future State (2020) (intro, information and behind-the-scenes for Future State)
Future State: Superman of Metropolis (2021) 1-2 (Future State is another possible future, meaning that it’s not necessarily canon, but it takes place in the future of the main canon, not in a complete AU, like say, Dark Knights of Steel. Technically not necessary to understand main universe stories, but a few popular characters and characterizations were brought over to the main universe.)

Shazam! (2021) 1

I’m glad you like the rewrite for Superman & Lois! :D I’ll think some more down the road ;)
1: what’s the duo’s opinion on the whole goku vs Superman & Superman vs Batman debate?
2: in-universe, what’s the most misconception the public have of the duo? Like Nightwing Chris being the son of the Nightwing of bludhaven for example.
3: do they have a “what’s the password” entry to the starcave?
4: do you have a group name when titans of tomorrow & starknights team up all together? I recommend young titans or Star Titans
5: don’t know if I said this but what’s their tickle areas?
6: is there any honorable members on the team? Like I can see Jon & the super twins on the starknights group if gained permission.
7: who’s the leader in both groups.
Happy New Year’s Eve to you friend @pin-crusher2000
I’m looking forward to those S&L ideas you’d have XD
Anyways, on with the show
1) Those debates can be fun to watch and consider but the Duo know that it’s better to appreciate the heroes involved in said debates for what they are as people/characters rather than take it all too seriously and to the point of zealotry and fanaticism as they’ve seen online too many times.
2) The public mistaking Chris as a junior Nightwing and a literal son of the Dick Grayson one via the two splitting the mantle evenly is one common misconception the two have seen time and time again. Also, being called biological brothers, Jake getting confused as a de aged Dick Grayson and being mixed up with Robin and Superboy from YJ just smaller and with differing colors are all also commonplace on newspaper tabloids and magazines.
3) I bet they would, mainly used for special occasions including parties for their friends and relatives taking place at their base. Jake is the one answering the door and The password would be ‘Crusader-Landing-Azule’
4) Star Titans is ideal and common enough to work well with them. It’s short, sweet and to the point. Though in full it’ll be The StarBurst Titans of Tomorrow, as a nice combination of their respective names.
5) On a scale of 1 - 10, with 1 being barely any sort of tingle and 10 being guaranteed of very loud laughter and thrashing around if not being held still….
Chris;
- Sides of the Neck: 6
- Ribcage Sides: 4
- Back of his Knees: 9
- Abdomen: 5
- Tops of his Feet: 7
- Heels and Soles: 7
- Toes: 8
Jake;
- Sides of the Neck: 5
- Ribcage Sides: 7
- Back of the Knees: 5
- Abdomen: 7
- Tops of his Feet: 10
- Heels and Soles: 10
- Toes: 10
6) In particular Green Lantern Tai Pham, Baby Wildebeest, Flamebird (Thara), in a later point in time both Osul and Otho, Jarro the Starro and from alternate Earths both Johnny Grayson aka Firepattern from Earth 2 and Matt McGinnis aka Robin Beyond from Earth 12
Maybe at a later point in time, the Duo would also have an ally and friend from outside the DC multiverse or even it’s dimension….like maybe from a completely different dimension (coded for franchise) in a future crossover *hint**hint*
And oh yeah, Jon too is a frequent help for both teams whenever the help is needed, akin to how Supergirl is a big help to the Legion of Superheroes if need be
7) Both teams have de facto as opposed to officially stated leadership but often times Mar’i and Bobby share having control of the Titans of Tomorrow. The both of them inherited their respective parents’ leadership skills but Bobby a tad bit moreso from Donna and even his Grand Aunt Diana
As for the StarKnights, Chris more or less makes the most prominent decisions of them all, with both Jake and Cerdian being second in commands to him.

DCU Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters
After a private press event on Monday, January 30, 2023, Co-Chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios James Gunn and Peter Safran announced to the public on January 31st the first batch of projects planned for DC Universe’s first chapter, titled “Gods and Monsters”.
Collider shares Gunn and Safran’s plan maps out 2 chapters in this universe, which will take 8 to 10 years to be told, leaving space for other stories in the future.
5 films and 5 HBO Max series (one of them animated) were disclosed:
CREATURE COMMANDOS Animated Series
7 episodes written by Gunn. Amanda Waller creates a black-ops team out of monstrous prisoners.
L-R: Rick Flag Sr. (who is going to appear in other projects too), Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus (Batman villain), Eric Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein (the lead), G.I. Robot and Weasel.
WALLER Series
Starring Viola Davis, this series features Team Peacemaker, taking place between season 1 and the future season 2.
SUPERMAN: LEGACY Film
The proper launch of the DCU. Written by Gunn, will focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing - It won’t be an origin story. Safran describes Superman as “kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned”. On theaters on July 11, 2025.
Superman’s actor has not been cast yet.
LANTERNS Series
Starring Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart. A True Detective-type mystery on Earth investigated by the duo, who find an ancient horror that leads into the overall story arc of the DCU.
THE AUTHORITY Film
DC’s WildStorm team who think the ends justify the means. Gunn explains “They are basically good-intentioned, but they think that the world is completely broken and the only way to fix it is to take things into their own hands, whether that means killing people, destroying heads of state, changing governments—basically, whatever they want to do to make the world better. We’ll see how that journey goes for them. There are morally gray characters (in our DCU), of which these are.”
PARADISE LOST Series
Set in Themyscira or Paraside Island, home of the Amazons and birthplace of Wonder Woman. The series focuses on the genesis and political intrigue of this society of women. Takes place before Diana is born.
THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD Film
The DCU will introduce its Batman and his son Damian Wayne, Robin, who Bruce didn’t know existed for the first eight to ten years of his life, and who was raised as an assassin. Inspired by Grant Morrison's comics.
DCU’s Batman has not been cast yet. Matt Reeves’ The Batman - Part II, starring Robert Pattinson, will hit theaters on October 3, 2025, but outside of the DCU continuity, under the “DC Elsewords” seal. Similarly, Joker: Folie à Deux will also continue to be its own separate Elsewords project.
BOOSTER GOLD Series
As put by Safran: “A loser from the future who uses his basic future technology to come back to today to pretend to be a superhero”.
SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW Film
A science fiction adventure based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic.
Gunn explains that while Superman was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, Kara was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet, and lived there for the first fourteen years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. “She’s a much harsher and more f*cked up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far.”
SWAMP THING Film
The film will investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing.
*****
Other projects from Chapter 1 remain under wraps for now!

DC: Earth 53 Omnibus- Post Apocalypse Part I
Some notes before I begin: This Is a self made AU of the DC Universe located in Earth 53 , which I created as a parallel to the regular DC Earth. I made this for use in various stories and cai bots. I will create a master list of all the posts for this once I am done.
Feel free to use it and adapt it for your own stories or content.
Basic summary:
The world, scarred by Darkseid's invasion, faces a long road to recovery. The Titans, Bat Family, and founding Justice League members play pivotal roles in this process, using their strengths, resilience, and unity to rebuild a shattered world and inspire hope for a better future.
The combined headquarters for the Titans, Bat Family, and Justice League is located in a fortified, repurposed underground military facility in the Appalachian mountains known as "The Haven".
cai tag: ✗⚠ - Post Invasion AU
Warning: This is a dark post apocalyptic world, read and use this however you want but the world building and content made from this is intended for adults
State of the World Before Darkseid's Invasion:
Overall Description:
Earth 53 was a world similar to the primary Earth in the DC Universe, featuring advanced technology, thriving cities, and complex social dynamics.
Major cities like Metropolis, Gotham, and Central City were bustling with activity, showcasing both the best and worst of humanity.
Superheroes and villains played significant roles in shaping society, with frequent battles and alliances influencing the world’s stability.
Governments worked alongside superhero organizations to maintain peace and security, though tensions and conflicts were ever-present.
Technological Advancements:
The world enjoyed advanced technology, with innovations in energy, transportation, communication, and healthcare.
Cities featured state-of-the-art infrastructure, with efficient public transportation, clean energy sources, and advanced medical facilities.
Superhero tech was integrated into everyday life, with security systems, emergency response technologies, and medical advancements benefiting from their inventions.
Societal Structure:
Societal norms and structures were influenced by the presence of superheroes and villains. Public trust in heroes varied, with some viewing them as protectors and others as potential threats.
Vigilantism was a topic of debate, with some governments supporting hero-led initiatives while others pushed for regulation and control.
Social issues such as inequality, crime, and corruption persisted, often exacerbated by the actions of both heroes and villains.
Key Heroes and Teams:
Justice League: The primary superhero team, consisting of icons like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter. They worked globally to address significant threats and maintain peace.
Titans: A younger team of heroes, including Nightwing, Starfire, Raven, Cyborg, and Beast Boy. They focused on threats that were more localized but equally dangerous.
Batfamily: Based in Gotham, this group included Batman, Robin (various iterations), Batgirl, Red Hood, Red Robin, and others. They dealt with Gotham’s unique challenges, particularly those posed by its rogue’s gallery.
Significant Events Shaping Earth 53 Prior to the Invasion:
1. The Rise of Meta-Humans:
The discovery and emergence of meta-humans significantly altered the global landscape. Governments, scientists, and militaries scrambled to understand and control these individuals.
Organizations like Cadmus and ARGUS conducted research and occasionally unethical experiments on meta-humans, leading to various conflicts.
2. The Formation of the Justice League:
The Justice League was formed in response to a series of global threats that individual heroes couldn’t handle alone. Their unity inspired hope and cooperation among nations but also sparked debates about accountability and power.
3. The Metropolis Incident:
An event where Lex Luthor, in an attempt to defeat Superman, unleashed a catastrophic weapon that caused widespread destruction in Metropolis. This incident led to tighter regulations on superhuman activities and increased tensions between heroes and authorities.
4. The Lazarus Project:
A covert initiative by Ra’s al Ghul, aiming to use Lazarus Pits to create an army of immortals. The Batfamily thwarted this plan, but the event revealed the extent of global underground networks and the persistent threat they posed.
5. The Crisis on Infinite Earths:
A multiverse-spanning event that brought heroes from different Earths together to combat an existential threat. This crisis reshaped the understanding of the multiverse, established new alliances, and left lasting impacts on Earth 53’s heroes and their dynamics.
6. The Atlantean Conflict:
A significant conflict between the surface world and Atlantis, triggered by environmental damage caused by human activities. Aquaman played a crucial role in negotiating peace, leading to better cooperation and understanding between Atlanteans and surface-dwellers.
7. The Rise and Fall of the Injustice League:
A coalition of villains led by Lex Luthor, aiming to undermine the Justice League and seize power. Their temporary success caused widespread chaos but ultimately strengthened the resolve of heroes and governments to collaborate more closely.
Key Events of the Invasion
Initial Assault (August 12-14, 2023)
Arrival: The invasion began abruptly on August 12, 2023, as Apokoliptian warships emerged from ominous dark clouds over major cities, including Metropolis, Gotham, and Central City.
First Strike: Parademons descended en masse, targeting critical infrastructure like communication hubs and power grids.
Heroic Response: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and other members of the Justice League quickly mobilized to defend the cities. Despite their efforts, the overwhelming numbers of Darkseid’s forces created chaos.
Battle of Metropolis (August 15, 2023)
Destruction of the Hall of Justice: Darkseid unleashed his Omega Beams, destroying the Hall of Justice and causing massive destruction across the city.
Heroic Defense: Superman and Wonder Woman engaged Darkseid directly, while Batman and Cyborg coordinated tactical responses to mitigate the damage.
Loss of Heroes: During this period, several heroes made significant sacrifices. Martian Manhunter was killed while protecting civilians, and Aquaman died defending Atlantis.
Gotham Siege (August 20-25, 2023)
Guerrilla Tactics: Batman led the Batfamily, including Nightwing and Batgirl, in a series of strategic ambushes to slow the enemy's advance.
Loss of Black Canary: Dinah Lance (Black Canary) was killed during a counterattack, using her Canary Cry to protect her team.
The Titan's Last Stand (September 20, 2023)
Sacrifice of Titans: In a desperate battle, Beast Boy and Raven were overwhelmed. Raven expended her life force to allow her teammates to escape.
Darkseids Final Offensive (December 20-31, 2023)
Climactic Battle: The final confrontation took place over several days. Heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman fought tirelessly to push Darkseid back.
Superman and Wonder Woman’s Stand: The duo led a final charge that forced Darkseid to retreat, marking the end of the invasion.
Heroes Involved
Superman: Led defenses in Metropolis, sustaining injuries while inspiring others.
Wonder Woman: Actively fought on the front lines, her leadership crucial in many battles.
Batman: Coordinated defense efforts from Gotham, employing his strategic acumen to orchestrate guerrilla tactics.
The Flash (Barry Allen): Played a critical role in evacuations and disrupting enemy formations.
Cyborg: Key in maintaining communication networks and hacking enemy systems.
Green Lantern (John Stewart): Sacrificed himself to protect Earth from an Apokoliptian fleet.
Impact and Aftermath
Massive Casualties: The invasion resulted in significant loss of life, including major heroes like Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl, Aquaman, and Black Canary.
Destruction and Chaos: Major cities were left in ruins, with survivors scattering to places like The Haven for refuge.
Hero-Villain Alliances: Temporary alliances between heroes and reformed villains emerged, leading to new dynamics in the post-invasion world.
Rebuilding Efforts: Heroes and former villains united to form the Council of Survivors, focusing on restoring order and rebuilding society.
Next posts will dive deeper into the post apocalypse setting more and some character building.

All-Star Squadron #2
Warning, Spoilers Ahead…
All-Star Squadron #2 by Roy Thomas, Rich Buckler, & Jerry Ordway
“The Tyrant Out Of Time!”
FDR’s assembled heroes break up a bank heist on their way to the naval base. The heroes swap origin stories to pass time during the flight. They also reveal their secret identities. Roy Thomas makes a point of letting the audience know how long the characters have been active in their heroic identities. Hawman, the Atom, and Dr. Mid-Nite have been active since 1940, Plastic Man since early 1941, while the remaining three - Johnny Quick, Liberty Belle, and Robotman - have only been active for weeks or a few months.
The editor’s note tells us to read the letters page for the sources of the origins.
Per Degaton explains his motivations to Danette and the Shining Knight: He explains that a few weeks ago Hawkman, Dr. Mid-Nite, and Sandman rescued a group of American scientists from Axis spies. The editor’s note refers us to All-Star Comics #10 - an issue published in 1941.
I would like to point out that Roy Thomas is seamlessly blending his stories with issues that were published in the 1940′s - forty years before the All-Squadron was published. And before the age of the internet and its resources.
Back to Per Degaton: He states that he was one of the scientist’s assistants. The scientists tell the JSA that they have developed a time-ray that can send people into the future. The JSA travel to the 25th century to gather parts to build a bomb-defense beam. Per Degaton reveals that he murdered Professor Zee (in 1947) then traveled back in time, building an army, and altering the timeline. He also traveled into the future. Editor’s notes refer us to All-Star Comics #35 (1947) and JLA #107-108.
Solomon Grundy interrupts Degaton to remind him they’ve heard this story before. Degaton responds with “Silence!” Yes, Grundy, you should never interrupt a wanna-be dictator while he’s ranting about his evil plans.
Degaton explains that he tried to alter the events of World War II but a “time-storm” kept him from altering events from September 1939 to December 6, 1941. Degaton reveals that he travelled to the future to gather his allies to attack the Justice Society. If you remember from “All-Star Squadron #1” thoughts, Degaton and his cohorts all debuted from 1943 to 1948. The only exception is Wotan, who debuted in 1940. Another masterful example of Roy Thomas weaving around established continuity and providing an explanation for why these villains are appearing before their actual debuts. Roy Thomas is an underrated master of the craft and an undervalued historian of comic books. If Roy Thomas can flawlessly interweave obscure characters like the Monster into his stories – without going against established continuity – and in an era where Google Search and the internet were not research options – then I don’t want to hear excuses from modern creators who can’t bother to be consistent with storylines that happened only a few years ago.
Degaton reveals the captured JSA members are being held beneath a volcanic isle in Hawaii.
Solomon Grundy proclaims he’s only here to strangle the Green Lantern and Wotan calls “dibs” on Doctor Fate.
Danette frees herself and tosses Sir Justin his sword. Sir Justin faces off with Solomon Grundy. The editor’s note informs us that we will see more of this fight next issue.
The Sky Pirate blitzes San Francisco. Sandra Knight changes into her Phantom Lady attire. The Sky Pirate tangles with FDR’s heroes. Phantom Lady joins the group. Doctor Mid-Nite remarks he’s heard of the mysterious Phantom Lady but that her usual stomping grounds are Washington DC. Sandra Knight was introduced as Washington DC debutante in her Quality Comics origin. It’s the small details that make Roy Thomas’ All-Star Squadron a master class series.
The Phantom Lady debuted in 1941. She was a Quality Comics character. DC purchased Quality Comics in 1956. Sandra Knight would later be retconned as the cousin of Ted Knight, the original Starman.
Robotman is about to capture the Sky Pirate only for him to vanish in a flash of light.
Degaton has a hissy over the heroes’ interference (and his forgetfulness of not all masked men in 1941 were members of the JSA) and pushes a button labeled “Volcanic Isle Detonator”.
Next issue: The Dooms of Dark December!
We receive a “Fact File On Per Degaton” which is more of a pin-up with his first appearance listed and his height. Degaton is a whopping 5’4”. Seems to be having some Napoleon syndrome going on.
The letter page recaps the “Secret Wartime History of the Justice Society of America” aka “Everything You Always Wanted To Know About The Justice Society But Were Afraid To Ask”
Home Earth is Earth-Two
Original membership roster was Hawkman, the Atom, Houman, Sandman, the Spectre, Dr. Fate, Green Lantern, and the Flash.
Superman and Batman were honorary members
Green Lantern and Flash stepped down and were replaced by Johnny Thunder and Dr. Mid-Nite
Starman later replaced Hourman who had taken a still-unexplained leave of absence
The JSA was founded partly through the efforts of FDR and coordinated anti-spy activities with the FBI, fighting sabotage in 1940 and 1941
The JSA raised millions of dollars to help war orphans, battled Axis influence in Latin America, and protected America’s scientists from abductions and assassinations (All-Star Comics #7, 9, 10)
Roy Thomas throws in a few paragraphs on the history of WWII. I’ll skip it because everyone should know this if you paid attention in history class.
The JSA disbanded in All-Star Comics #11 as all members joined a branch of America’s armed services. The exception is the Spectre, who is a combination of a corpse/spirit of vengeance.
By the end of All-Star Comics #11, the JSA had reformed as the Justice Battalion, operating under direct orders from the War Department. Their military careers were largely ended at this point.
They were mostly active in America, though they did fight in Europe at times.
The last appearance of the Justice Battalion was All-Star Comics #16.
Roy Thomas notes the All-Star Squadron series was “created to tell the story which the wartime All-Star Comics did not, could not tell. The first issue should be taking place shortly after the time the members spent “weeks, if not months in the Army, the Navy, and the Army Air Corps.”
“Nothing in this or future issues of All-Star Squadron is meant to negate major events chronicled in the DC Comics of the 1940’s or since. If minor inconsistencies pop up occasionally – and they inevitably will – the pop-art historians of the future may rest assured that they’ll be dealt with, sooner or later.”
A comic creator who values his craft and the history of his company. I’m shedding tears of joy.
This issue, including the letters page, is essentially an info-dump on the heroes and Per Degaton. A bit of action but mostly exposition. Still enjoyed it.

Favorite Books of 2023
When this year started, I set myself a challenge on Goodreads to read 100 books. Currently, I have read 159 books, so I guess you could say I overperformed. Those are print books, eBooks, and audiobooks. I make no distinctions. There’s nothing on the list under 100 pages, either, so I didn’t really count individually published short stories, though I did count the collections.
I love books and I love talking about them, so I’m going write about my favorite books I read this year. A word about the list: This is a list of books that I read this year, not necessarily books that were published this year. And while I am numbering them (sort of), this is also not necessarily a list of the best books I read this year, merely my favorites. Most of the books I read tend to be science fiction and fantasy, though I do read a healthy amount of nonfiction as well, as well as some general fiction. I do not read horror, except in rare cases. This list is merely to give me a chance to talk about things I loved.
Also, I have combined entire series or multiple books in a series as one entry. I do not apologize for this.
So, because no one demanded it, here are my favorite books I read this year, in reverse order. The order changed several times while compiling the list so don’t get too hung up on the number assignments.
Honorable Mentions
The Creative Act by Rick Rubin (Nonfiction) This is a meditation on creativity in all its forms, though Rubin is primarily known as a music producer and his examples reflect that. It’s about how creative minds work. There’s a lot of talk about process, and how to get unstuck, but mostly it’s about how to live as a creative person.
The Undiscovered Country Vol 1-4 by Scott Snyder, Charles Soulle, and Giuseppe Camuncoli (Graphic Novel). This series takes place a number of years in the future, after the United States has sealed its borders and cut off all communication with the outside world. Thirty years later, a group is invited to return, and see what the US has become. What has it become? A bunch of independent regions who are all some flavor of fucked up. Also, time inside may be broken? This is a fantastic, thought-provoking adventure story. The characters are fascinating, the art is amazing.
How to be an Anti-Racist by Ibram X. Kendi (Nonfiction). This is a book about racism in all its forms, the effects it has had on society, and how to combat it within yourself and within the culture at large. Kendi lets no one off the hook for any of this. It really made me think about several things in new ways.
And now the top ten, in reverse order.
10. Winter’s Orbit/Ocean’s Echo by Everina Maxwell (Science Fiction). I told you I was combining books, though I’m really cheating here because while these are linked, they are essentially standalones. In Winter’s Orbit, an arranged marriage ends up overturning the political system of an entire star system. In Ocean’s Echo, Maxwell gives us a sci-fi spin on the fake dating trope. The world is Queer normative, which was refreshing. Both couples in each book were male/male. Exciting sci-fi concepts plus relationship drama. What’s not to love?
9. The End of Everything by Katie Mack (Nonfiction). I inhaled this book, I found it so fascinating. In it, Mack discusses, in an entertaining and surprisingly hopeful way, the current theories about how the universe might end, going into detail about when it might happen and what it might look like to the people (or beings) who are around for it. Some of these are distressingly plausible and could happen at any moment. She concentrates on the science, and how we know what we know, as well as what the implications are for our current world.
8. Far Sector by N.K. Jemison and Jamal Campbell (Graphic Novel). Rookie human Green Lantern Jo Mullen is assigned to the City Enduring, on the other side of the cosmos, and has to solve a series of murders and attempt to start a war from breaking out among the city’s thousands of factions. I usually don’t read stuff from the major superhero universes, but Jemison brought me in to this and it did not disappoint. It is also enough of a standalone that you can read it without caring about what else is going on in the wider universe. The art is gorgeous, which is a bonus.
7. The Engineer/The Gangster/The Doctor by CS Poe (Fantasy). A federal agent hunts down criminals in a steampunk world, while hiding from his own past as a war criminal, and along the way falling in love with an outlaw. I read the first book and immediately downloaded the rest that were available. The fantasy concepts and worldbuilding are original, and the love story is swoonworthy, which is all you can ask for with something like this.
6. Once and Future Vol 1-5 by Kieron Gillen, Dan Mora, and Tamra Bonvillan (Graphic Novel). As prophecy foretold, King Arthur has returned to reclaim his crown, accompanied by a motley assortment of creatures out of legend. This is not a good thing, because King Arthur is a powerful psychopath who does not have the people’s best interests at heart. An aging warrior, her grandson, and the grandson’s maybe girlfriend are all that can oppose the new order, as the British Isles are plunged into chaos. It’s a startling take on the legends, as well as a meditation on what heroism actually is. The story is complete in these five volumes.
5. Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher (Fantasy). This is not a story about a princess who wants to marry a prince. This is a story about a princess who wants to kill one. She has her reasons, and will assemble a collection of allies to help her. Also, a really sweet slow-burn love story. This won the HUGO, so it really doesn’t need me to recommend it, but I do.
4. An Echo in the Sorrow/A Veiled and Hallowed Eve by Hailey Turner (Fantasy). These are the final two volumes in Turner’s Soulbound Series, about a wounded battle mage illegally soul-bonded to his werewolf boyfriend. And this conclusion did not disappoint. A lot of amazing urban fantasy concepts, a veritable war of the gods, plus all the feels. I was eager to see Jono and Patrick find their happy ever after, and she made me sweat for it, but Turner delivered.
3. Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman (Nonfiction). This is more than a book about productivity. It is a book about our entire relationship with time itself, and our sense of progress. It made me think of these things in new ways, and was also an enjoyable, engaging read. A book about what we’re really looking for and how we might go about finding it.
2. Last Exit by Max Gladstone (Fantasy). Ten years ago, a group of college studentsembarked on an epic quest through many possible worlds, on a mission to save reality. They failed, and one of them fell. Now, the survivors must complete the quest even though they now have hard-fought-for lives they are leaving behind. Serious Dark Tower vibes here, and a twist I did not see coming, but made perfect sense. A book about what we owe to the past, and what we owe to each other. Also, hope.
1. The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune (Fantasy). An easy pick for one of my favorite books of all time. Linus is sent to investigate Arthur’s Home for Magical Youth, and ends up finding more than he bargained for. A book about finding your family and your true love at the same time, and the lengths you’ll go to to fight for them. Also, about discovering who you really are, and the strength waiting inside you. I bawled like a baby through the last fifty pages, not even kidding.
And that’s it, my favorite books of the year. What were your favorites?

Anonymous asked:
thoughts on dawn of dc: cyborg?
Three new major announcements today, plus a tease that DC may or may not have intended for us to find.
In additon to the previously announced Batman: The Brave & The Bold and Shazam books, today we got creative team reveals for Green Lantern, Cyborg, and the announcement of a new Titans book.
Green Lantern - Instead of the previously announced Mariko Tamaki, Jeremy Adams will now be writing Hal's adventures, with Xermancio on art. Adams previously worked on the Green Lantern: The Animated Series cartoon where he wrote the scripts for the Blue Lantern episodes. If memory serves those are well regarded, and the solicit for the series sounds interesting: Hal and all of Sector 2814 are placed under quarantine, he's trapped on Earth and has to rebuild his Terran life while also hunting down Sinestro who is trapped on Earth too. Still eager to see more lower stakes stories and more focus on Hal's human friends and foes, hopefully Adams will deliver that alongside Sinestro shenanigans. If nothing else the art will be fantastic, I loved Xermancio's work on the Blackstars mini with Morrison, can't wait to see him draw Hal as a GL. PKJ is writing some backups here which I assume will function as "issue 0" to the upcoming John Stewart series which he reconfirmed is still happening.
Cyborg - Writer Morgan Hampton in their first Big 2 gig and veteran artist Tom Raney are the creators handling Vic's new mini. No "am I a man or a machine?" bullshit in the solicit, if anything it sounds like we'll get to see Victor be treated as Victor rather than having people ostracize him as a freak. His new design is easily his best since the DCYou era, and Cyborg going cyberpunk is a no-brainer. Cautiously optimistic on this one.
Titans - Tom Taylor writing, Nicola Scott on art. Probably the least surprising announcement even though it wasn't announced beforehand. Won't be reading since I don't care about the Titans nor do I have any desire to read another Taylor series at this point, but hopefully Taylor writing the Titans does indeed mean he is exiting the Superman side of DC. Writing the team DC is advertising as the JL's replacements would likely demand a great deal of attention to him, requiring he relinquish Jon.
Of course that assumes DC really is committing to the Titans being the new premiere team, while the JL is gone for a while, which I'm sorry to tell you folks:
Was never going to happen. AIPT brightened the image and found a tease for the JL's return included. Guess that means the Titans will be the "premiere team" for a grand total of... 7 months? Which equals out to a single arc in terms of monthly issues. Great show of confidence there DC. Only twist I could see is that it isn't the classic Big 7 lineup JL, instead it's the Future State crew forming a new JL, and they'll be the ones taking guidance from the Titans instead of the other way around as is tradition.
Next two books to get (re)launched are Wonder Woman and a Hawk book (I'm leaning towards Hawkgirl being the lead). For Wonder Woman it seems the Cloonrad era will come to an end with issue 800, and a new team will be taking over. Maybe they'll even relaunch her book with a new #1? For writers I want to see Si Spurrier take over, he's said he loves WW and had ideas for her, he's great at writing fantasy and magic, and Diana really needs a hit. Otherwise I could see PKJ or Josie Campbell getting the book. PKJ has one more ongoing to be announced and he wrote the WW Lazarus Planet prelude in We Once Were Gods (besides being a fantasy writer himself). Campbell obviously just finished writing Mary's mini and her past involvement with the She-Ra cartoon would serve her well in writing Diana.
Otherwise it looks like the next event is Knightterrors (could the Batman Who Laughs be involved?) and Brainiac is definitely being set up to be a big player. Likely will be the reason for the JL reforming, as either the catalyst for Clark getting the band back together, or for Jon assembling a new one. I hate Brainiac becoming a JL villain but with the right writer, I would begrudgingly give it a chance.
Any thoughts about the recent Dawn of DC announcements ?
Let's see if the new DC is the same as the old DC.
DC's official press release says that 20 new books are coming, and they only revealed 10 (one of which was last year's Round Robin winner), so 10 more books are coming that have yet to be revealed. Let's take a roll call:
Unstoppable Doom Patrol by Dennis Culver and Chris Burnham - Burnham has me excited, Culver has me skeptical. All of Culver's DC work thus far has been lousy. His Justice League Incarnate book with Williamson was the weakest of the Infinite Frontier trilogy, his Future State Gotham book was really bad, and Doom Patrol is a great team that demands unorthodox writing. Rooting for Culver to surprise me here because God would I love to have a good Doom Patrol book with Way never coming back at this point. Can't believe it took DC this long given the success of the DP HBO Max series. Jane having a new alter that places her in the role of the Chief is a cool idea at least.
Superboy: Man of Tomorrow by Kenny Porter and Jahnoy Lindsay - I voted for this, I'm glad it won, I've enjoyed DC Mech, I expect I will enjoy this. I'm praying Lindsay gives Conner a new costume, it's time to ditch the 90s look for something new. No more looking back for Conner, that terrible Fitzmartin YJ mini was right about one thing: we can't live in the past. He needs a new modern costume, and a story that reestablishes who he is in a post Jon Kent world. This and PKJ Action are seemingly going to accomplish that, both in terms of who Conner is on his own, and who he is in the Superfamily. Given the long wait between when this series was announced as the winner and when it is finally coming out, there shouldn't be any delays at least.
Green Lantern: Hal Jordan by Mariko Tamaki (Artist TBA) - Tamaki is mostly good with a few misses, her Tec, Supergirl: Being Super, and (apparently I haven't read it) Crush & Lobo books were good, her Wonder Woman run not so much. In fairness that was blatant movie synergy and didn't leave her much freedom to work with. I liked her Tec run and this appears to be aiming for something similar. Hal back in Coast City on Earth, rebuilding his life here is exactly the kind of thing they should have done after the Johns era's nonstop cosmic epic. Give me revamps of old Hal Earth villains beyond Hector Hammond that we haven't seen in a while, Hal struggling to make friends with the neighbors the way Tamaki had Bruce do in her Tec run, and put Hal and Carol back together again, and I'll be happy.
Green Lantern John Stewart by PKJ (Artist TBA) - Now this has my attention. Giving PKJ another book means they trust him, giving him a John Stewart book - who may end up being the main DCU Lantern if that HBO Max GL series actually gets made - means they view him as one of their up and comers. He's expressed a lot of love for and desire to work in GL before, he's set up plot threads for GL such as the Revenant Queen threat that would give John his own Rogues which John desperately needs, and I obviously am a huge fan of the cosmic storytelling over in Action which I fully expect will be repeated here. DC Cosmic has been crying out for a worldbuilder to flesh it out more for ages, this is an exciting choice. My hunch is that John will be dealing with another Aspect of Olgrun, since there are six more out there unaccounted for. Inject some of that Warworld Saga storytelling into Green Lantern, let's get John a love interest, and maybe Stewart will finally get that equivalent to Johns run on GL with Hal which his fans have been begging for. Sampere is a huge GL fan who has history with PKJ before, I would say he's a natural choice for this book, but he likes Hal more so I could see him ending up on Tamaki's book instead.
Cyborg (Creative Team TBA) - Wish I could be more excited for this, but I have to know the team and the pitch before being interested. Too many Cyborg stories rehash the same "am I a man or a machine?" crap for me to pull this sight unseen.
Batman: The Brave & The Bold by Tom King and Various Artists - King got robbed of his 100 issue Batman run so I guess he's going to make up for it by doing secondary Batman books forever. Does Batman really need another team-up book given World's Finest already has him teaming up with Superman and the rest of the DCU? I'll be reading this so I guess I'm part of the problem, but I really wish King would take on another of the A-Listers. All he does is Batman books, C-Listers, and the occasional dabble in the Superman sphere. I want to see him tackle another Justice Leaguer's ongoing, give him an Aquaman or Martian Manhunter book since everyone else seems to be claimed. Apparently he's shifting back towards the mainline DCU ongoings after spending a couple years doing minis of dubious canonicity. Looks like creative teams will rotate and since Rob Williams is here and he's a writer not an artist, guess he's next up after King.
Green Arrow by Josh Williamson and Sean Izaakse - Williamson has been building up to this since the start of Infinite Frontier, cool that he's finally announcing the book. I'll admit I'm annoyed it's opening with a "we have to find Ollie who is lost out in the Multiverse!" arc, I'm sick of the Multiverse and I'm tired of DC "building up" to doing what everyone is asking them to. Just write a damn Green Arrow back where he's in Star City/Seattle interacting with the Arrow Family! Maybe Williamson doing a Multiverse story with a smaller cast will be more palatable, I did enjoy his Flash run after all.
Shazam! by Mark Waid and Dan Mora - Other than Superman proper this is probably the book Waid has been dying to write the most. He, Morrison, and Gail Simone pitched to take over the Marvel Family way back when, I bet he's got loads of ideas on how to revamp the character, and his ideas will probably be better received than Johns' revamp was. Solicit sounds great, Mora on art (and apparently still doing art for World's Finest, dude is a machine) is perfect, and Waid's handling of the Fab Five over in WF has shown he can handle younger characters still. Should be fun in the same way WF is.
The Penguin by Tom King and Stefano Gaudiano - Hah that's a pretty great team for a synergy book. King's Penguin in his Batman run was... well he seemed to be teasing that Penguin had sex with actual penguins, so clearly his take on Penguin is untraditional to say the least. Pitch seems interesting enough, Penguin back in crime because the government forced him back in as their agent is intriguing.
Steelworks (Creative Team TBA) - On one hand hell yes a new Steel book! Tell me Greg Pak is writing this and I am there day one. If it's not Pak however then I have qualms. The brief description in the press release makes it seem like John Henry is giving up on being Steel and handing over the role entirely to Natasha, and I've got no interest in that. S&L make me into a Nat fan but I love John Henry more, and I am not going to be happy if DC's idea of celebrating his 30th is him handing over the role to his niece. He better be the main protagonist and he better get to suit up and be Steel. Glad that DC has enough faith in PKJ to start spinning new series out of what he's doing.
Only two Bat books so fuck it, let's call it a win. Satisfied overall with the creative teams announced, for those that were actually announced, DC is playing it safe but after Infinite Frontier took risks and bombed that's exactly what I expected to happen. I guess the next event is going to be called Knighttime and will be another Batman event. Ugh. Also is that red circle with a bird supposed to represent Penguin, because it sure looks a lot like Hawkman’s symbol. Maybe a new Hawk book will be announced as part of the second wave? For the second wave I want books for Zatanna, Aquaman, Vixen, Justice League Dark (use the Shadowpact name if we're keeping the JL on ice for a while), Suicide Squad, and Legion of Superheroes, but as an opening lineup? I'm pretty happy with this!

“OSHAWA TO SUPPORT SCRIP BARTER PLAN,” Toronto Star. February 22, 1933. Page 20. ---- Central Council of Ratepayers Assure Co-operation to Promoters of Project ---- KIWANIS MEET ---- Oshawa, Feb. 22. - Co-operation in establishing the scrip barter plan was assured by the Central Council of Ratepayers last night when President S. G. Carnell was authorized to approach business and professional men of the city along with the principal promoters, W. C. Hutcheson and C. R. Hunter.
"In place of issuing scrip and trying to improve business in Oshawa, let us urge inflation upon our government so the whole country will benefit," E. Cheetham urged.
Suggesting the provincial statute should be amended, Magistrate Creighton yesterday dismissed the charge against Charles Bowra, merchant, of keeping his store open contrary to the Wednesday half-holiday closing by-law. Magistrate Creighton stated there was no evidence to show the store came under any classification set forth in the city by-law. The provincial statute would have to be amended, Magistrate Creighton said, so the by-law could definitely include all stores intended.
Stove Pipes Cause Blaze Valuable service performed for the city in preparation of the budget by Ald, George W. McLaughlin, finance chairman, is lauded by City Treasurer P. A. Blackburn, who said: "When we finally have the ship on even keel financially, as I am confident we eventually will have, the city of Oshawa will owe a deep debt. of gratitude to Mr. McLaughlin."
Defective stove pipes caused small blaze at the home of C. F. Sturgess, 423 Simcoe St. S., yesterday. Damage is estimated at $25 by Fire Chief W. R. Elliott. Cigarettes valued at $62 were stolen when a freight car on the Oshawa railway siding was broken open.
Pleading guilty to creating a disturbance on the streets at night, William Blakely. Bowmanville, was fined $15 and costs by Magistrate Creighton.
Great improvements to grounds surrounding homes, can be made by planting of trees, evergreens and shrubs. Leon L. Smith of Winona told members of Oshawa Horticultural Society gathered at the Genosha hotel. With the aid of lantern slides Mr. Smith aptly demonstrated methods of planting and trimming the shrubs and care of the trees.
An active campaign to increase membership was urged by President A. L. Bouckley who outlined the immediate future program for beautifying the city.
Bowling Green Proposed Fearing they will be forced to vacate the premises occupied for a number of years at Alexandra and Simcoe Sts. because they will be unable to pay the taxes, members of Oshawa Bowling Club are now fostering a movement to have the grounds taken over by the parks commission and operated as a public bowling green. The club would undertake maintenance of the greens. Under the former arrangement the club rented the grounds from the public utilities commission for $1 a year but the city assessor has ruled that since the land is not used for municipal purpose, it is taxable.
Plans for the annual dance March 17 occupied attention of Kiwanis at the luncheon yesterday.
